The only hope for the Kurds in Syria, if what is being reported is true, as opposed to a possibility that is being floated, is that Joint Chiefs of Staff step up and say “no”.

If it is true, the Kurds fighting in Syria will be sacrificed to make Erdogan happy.

Kind of like a certain meddling journalist from Saudia Arabia who got taken off the chessboard writ large. The Kurds will still have their provinces in north and northeast Iraq intact, but their trust in the west will be forever broken. They have carried our water in fighting Isis in western Iraq and Syria for three fucking years.

And they beat them into a pulp. They won. If we let the Turks destroy them, it will be the ultimate betrayal.

Does Drumpf understand any of this? No. He’s a complete moron on any aspect of foreign policy unless it makes him money, and Syria and Iraq are right out.

Abandoning the Kurds in Syria would be the worst foreign policy decision his admin has made yet, and that is saying one whole hell of a lot.

I think we need to look at the conservative movement of the past 50-60 years as less conservatism and more reactionaryism. The right once it finally recovered from The Depression and how the Depression hindered conservatism nationally for a generation used the resentment of the fact that first Truman’s Fair Deal and later LBJ’s Great Society would benefit those of all socio-economic backgrounds to their advantage. It’s how many working class whites whom greatly benefited from The New Deal got to be fearful of “big government” and “tax/spend liberals.” One thing that infuriates me about Bernie Sanders when he attacks the Dem leadership for “losing” the WWC is he never acknowledges how the right in fact birthed identity politics which birthed first the “Silent Majority” and later the “Moral Majority.”. They are still the greatest practitioners of it. Pence even describes himself as a Christian first in his politics.

funny, because a lot of my core beliefs are what could be called “conservative”. I like markets - but not as some abstract ideal, but as a mechanism for balancing supply and demand - to the benefit of all participants.

I favor individual initiative and personal responsibility. But individuals also have the right to collectivize. We do it all the time with investors in the form of limited-liability corporations, but why do conservatives throw tizzy fits when workers or consumers form unions or cooperatives?

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Wake up to hear that Trump has sold out the Kurds, knowing that Turkey is likely to engage in ethnic cleansing to deal with a group that Turkey has long claimed were terrorists. What did Trump get in return? A promise to build more hotels in Turkey? More personal financial gains?

Everything Trump is doing is to enrich and empower himself and the GOP has gone along with it because for the most part, the GOP empowered itself and was willing to overlook all of Trump’s criminality so long as the GOP advanced their agenda.

Well, now that the GOP is thoroughly compromised and complicit Trump has crossed the Rubicon. He makes a massive change in US strategic and foreign policy without bothering to consult his Senate GOPers. They too are waking up this morning to Trump selling out the Kurds. Trump didn’t bother consulting the Pentagon or the intel community either, all while lying about how ISIS is no longer a threat - it still is.

Trump continues to screw our national security by the day and the GOP has continued to enable Trump because they put party over nation and Trump’s personal enrichment is more important than applying the rule of law to a lawless and corrupt treason weasel like Trump and his cronies.

Graham finally finds his stones this morning, realizing the monster he’s spent years enabling is doing serious harm. They’ll issue a strongly worded statement in response all while protecting Trump from actual consequences.

GOP delenda est. They are no longer doing the nation’s business, or protecting the nation from all threats foreign and domestic. They are enabling and enriching themselves and their cronies, while sabotaging govt to further their personal agenda and corrupting everything they touch.

Trump telegraphed this last week when they threatened the judge to respond on their timetable or else they’d act. A good lawyer would have these papers ready to go in any event (and they knew that the judge was going to deny their motion anyways).

Now it goes to the 2d Circuit, which is likely to affirm the judge’s ruling - meaning that it’s only a matter of time before it goes to the Supreme Court stacked with Trumpists Gorsuch and Kavanaugh who’ll contort their way to claiming that Trump can’t be investigated while in office.

We didn’t watch a lot of old movies when I was a kid. We were trying to escape reality, not deal with it. So I didn’t know about the movie Gaslight, nor did I know that gaslighting was a word in English. It’s a hectic morning at the home of Kathleen O’Donnell and her wife, Casey. Kathleen is getting their four-year-old foster daughter ready for the park. She got placed with them overnight. Casey is wrangling the four dogs. They’ve already got their 11-year-old son off to school.

They live on a tree-lined street in Billings, Montana. It’s a place they’ve called home since 2014.

“All of my family lives in Billings, so with a kid we wanted to be near them,” Kathleen said.

But when the same-sex couple made the move, they knew it came with risks. While five Montana cities have local non-discrimination ordinances on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, Billings, the state’s largest city, is not one of them.

Nor does the state have an explicit law that protects LGBTQ people from discrimination in housing, employment or public accommodations. Neither do more than half of U.S. states, leaving millions to rely on a patchwork of protections that vary depending on where they happen to live.

It’s why Kathleen and her wife are closely watching three upcoming cases that will be argued in front of the Supreme Court on Tuesday related to Title VII, the federal statute that makes it illegal to discriminate against someone at work on the basis of sex. The court is hearing arguments on whether the definition of sex in Title VII includes sexual orientation and gender identity.

For people like the O’Donnells, whatever the Supreme Court decides will have an outsized impact on their lives. They’ve already felt the limits of the protections in the city they call home.

It started the year the family moved to Billings in 2014. Kathleen was looking for a place to live with her family. She found a house that worked. The landlord handed her an application.

“We met the standard requirements for renting the house. And I had just written [my wife’s] name down and he asked me, ‘OK, well is it a girl or a boy?’ Which is an odd question to ask someone,” Kathleen said. “[Casey and I] had actually previously had that conversation on what do we do if someone asks us, because it is common in Montana, unfortunately, and we were like, ‘No, we’re not going to lie, we’re going to tell the truth.’ And so when I did that, that’s when he was like, ‘Oh, I don’t rent to your kind here.’”

She said without local protections, there wasn’t much she could do, so she found a different place to live.

Two years later, Kathleen landed a new job at a local auto dealership. Most people were nice, but she said the owner’s son called her names.

“He felt it was OK to make names based on my appearance,” she said. “I would be considered a ‘butch’ lesbian, and I have the short hair, so they didn’t refer to me by Kathleen. They would refer to me as ‘Bob’ or ‘Bill’ and use a male verbiage because of my appearance.”

She put up with it.

“With that being your job and the way you provide for your family, unfortunately I just kind of let it be the way it was going to be at that time,” she said.

A few days before her six-month probationary period was up, her supervisor called her into the office and told her the owner asked him to fire her.

“I looked at him and I was like, ‘Why am I being fired?’ I was like, ‘I’ve never been in trouble. I’ve shown up to work,’” she said. “And he said, ‘It’s because the owner does not like that you’re gay.’”

The dealership would not comment on O’Donnell’s allegation. At the time, she said she called the Montana state employment office.

“I told them my story and they’re like, ‘Unfortunately, there’s nothing I can do for you,” she said.

LGBTQ advocates say such stories are unfortunately all too common in states where gender identity and sexual orientation are not explicitly protected classes under the law. And while the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says it will enforce Title VII’s protections when gender identity and sexual orientation is at issue regardless of the law in any particular state, courts are irrevocably split on whether it has the authority to do so.

That’s the question the Supreme Court is being asked to decide when they hear the three cases, two on sexual orientation and one on gender identity.

Anyone who thinks the current chaos will change with Trump gone are deluded. America is through the looking glass now. We have evolved into the next stage of our nation’s history- an aging, scared empire thrashing about finding our place in a multipolar world. Even with a potential Warren or Biden presidency our former worldwide notion of stability is gone. We are under the rule of a Republican Party corporate plutocracy with broad support from a huge swath of voting square acreage with about 35% of the population, mostly tribal-voting white people calling the shots.

The name of the game is white supremacism at any cost- even destroying the country as it has been known in the process. The alliance between the Fundamentalist Christians and the more secular entitlement-minded whites like Trump is not simply going away. The Republicans will continue to dominate local and state elections for decades. The country is worth destroying because for them, the alternative is worse. A world where white men and white Christian cultural constructs are not automatically dominant is too scary for them to even contemplate. Better for them to split the country into more local state control, eliminate national agencies, regulations and and still be able to dictate law and policy by right-wing SCOTUS judicial decree in the urban areas.
