Music is the one thing humans are great at, and it helps us to stay alive. There’s nothing quite like it for helping our hearts, minds and spirits.

Hotel night auditor/ security was easily one of the aggravating jobs I’ve ever had.

I remember one night, we had Dan Quayle’s security detail in our place. Guys were jack-assing around the bar and floors all night. About 10 minutes after final call, my boss discovers someone trying to break into the outdoor pool. I run down there, and we both go in to see what the hell is up.

Now, the pool is surrounded by a privacy fence, so we can only actually *see* what’s going on on the pool side. Which turns out to be 4 under-aged, clearly drunk girls breaking in.

But what we could *hear* was a bunch of drunk, middle-aged men feeding them instructions, on the other side of the fence. Men who get very quiet when the flashlights get turned on.

So we round up the girls, and call the police. They arrive, and suddenly, here comes Dan Quayle’s security detail, making a big show about “Hey fellow LEOs! What the heck is going on here! We have no idea!” The girls are visibly horrified, and literally no one involved has any misconceptions about what was going on.

But you know- smallish city cops, and feds glad-handing them left and right, and a couple of local girls who got caught up in circles the never should have ventured into…

The only upside was, ultimately, the girls got off because *absolutely no one* wanted a record of this crap floating around.

There is a kind of interesting feel to working in hotels, I’ll give you. The whole vibe that only comes from being in a weird nexus of people who are in this one place at the same time, for a day or two, but who will never interact with each other again for the most part.

If you’re into people watching, or envisioning made up narratives for the people around you, it’s pretty interesting. It’s one of the reasons why, much as I appreciate the convenience of AirBNBs, I miss staying in a proper hotel.

But, yeah- the drunks are bad. Worst constellation of clients and behavior? F’ing high-school reunions. Nothing worse than a bunch of middle-aged, middle-of-the-roaders yearning to relive some imaginary rebellious youth phase they had by drinking *way* more than their teen-aged selves would have thought cool, while mainlining Hot Hits of the Whenever.

Second? High-school sports. Not the players, necessarily- but the coaches are awful.

(And before anyone jumps down my throat- I’m a middle-aged, middle-of-the-roader. I just have the sense of self to limit my behavior, like the average person who doesn’t think public vomiting is cool.)

As long as Limbaugh and Faux News and other similar bad actors flood the airwaves and the internet, winning elections won’t be sufficient. After all we won it all in 2008, but the poison became more toxic. We need some way to change the messaging that infects too many of our fellow citizens. Unfortunately, religion has proved not to be the answer — if it were, the evangelicals would never have flocked to Trump and supported his vile temperament and rhetoric. Can messages of love, tolerance, and compassion actually overcome competing messages of hatred, cruelty, and intolerance — or do messages of hate drown out softer, kinder words? I don’t know what it takes to awaken the millions of our citizens from the spell that Trump and the GOP has placed on them.

The big thing is that you break their belief that they deserve it for just being white, or just being Christian. The one problem is that far too many people on our side are seeking a simple solution. It won’t be won in one election. There is no argument that you can use to convince them we are just going to have to make it too costly for them to have their views.

yunno, imagine a simple analog device that records your call and speeds it up. You then call the person at the other end, who would “download” the call at high speed - for a fraction of the time and expense - and then play it back at normal speed.

That might have been a much bigger hit.

Maybe, except for three things…

1. The telcos of the time structured their long-distance rates with huge first minute charges and much lower charges for extra minutes. (Sometimes the initial charge was for the first three minutes.) So you’d have to have a LONG message to see any cost savings.

2. Frequency response for a typical long-distance phone circuit of the era was limited to 3 kHz or so. Barely acceptable for a live call at normal speed. Run sped-up voice over that and slow it down on playback and you’re down to 1500 Hz at double speed, 750 Hz (!) at 4x speed. It would be a muffled mess…

3. … if you could even hook the recorder and player directly to the phone line. Ma Bell didn’t let you connect external devices to her phone lines if she didn’t own them herself.

re: #70 The Pie Overlord!

The Lubavitcher Rebbe was once asked by a journalist to say a few words about the “Judeo-Christian Tradition.” He said “Why don’t you call it the Judeo-Christian-Islamic Tradition?”

Yep, that probably explains why right wingers never refer to the Abrahamic Traditions!

De-escalation simply isn’t a thing anymore. Shooting has gone from last resort to only resort. And it’s clear that regardless of how many ‘good cops’ there might be, the institution encourages and protects this behavior. The entire barrel is rotten and no amount of good apples can fix that.

And speaking of bad faith: the spin *certain* parties seem to inevitably put on some issues is every bit as aggravating: according to a piece I saw re Hunter Biden’s “vow” to stop working/taking money money from foreign entities said he would stop doing so IF HIS FATHER WERE ELECTED PRESIDENT - to avoid conflicts of interest . The last bit of clarification seem not to have been emphasized very much.

In his place, I would have made sure that any such announcement would be crafted specifically as a dig at the Trump family’s overt and blatant corruption, and stressing the comparisons: but then, Hunter Biden really doesn’t seem all that sharp. Dad Joe, OTOH….

It is quite a distinction. The media really needs to press Trump why it’s okay for Ivanka to show her mug at the UN and other government events while he’s accusing Hunter of profiting from his Dads name. We won’t get a honest answer obviously but he needs to be told to his face that his princess and him are far more crooked than the Bidens.

BEIRUT — Videos posted on social media showing at least one execution-style killing have called into question the discipline of the soldiers engaged in Turkey’s five-day old effort to seize territory controlled by the Kurds allies in northeastern Syria.

The most gruesome and explicit of the videos shows Turkish-allied Syrian fighters pumping bursts of automatic fire into the body of a bound man lying on the side of a desert road as a gunman shouts to his comrades to take his phone and film him doing the shooting. Another trembling, handcuffed man crouches on the opposite side of the road as the shooting erupts. “Kill them,” one man is heard shouting.

Tito was interesting. My grandfather’s cousins were partisans during the war. Tito opposed the USSR after 1948 too.

Tito was the only true Yugoslav. He believed in the nation he created — and if he had lived for another 100 years, maybe he could have knit the disparate nationalities into a single nation. Under him, there was intermarriage among people of different ethnicities. Unfortunately, his successor Milosevic did not share this vision, and unraveled the decades of unity that Tito had produced.

But then, we now see how a single bad actor, when supported by his political party, can unravel a nation of 243 years and transform the most powerful nation in the world into a weak pathetic mess of tribal loyalties in a couple years.

No, not AFAICR, but then, it’s probably a good thing: Trump is likely to have “staffed” it with Islamophobic cretins who would make Gorka look moderate, and which would probably recommended making Islam illegal in the US…

Harry Reid has said that Trump is actually very smart. He knows how to convert any charges against him to charges against his opponent and to force the fight to be on his terrain. My opinion: this approach succeeds only because the MSM allows him to get away with this. Trump is Putin’s puppet and our MSM refuses to pursue this allegation. Instead they focused on her emails, Hunter Biden, or any CT targeting the Democrats or his opponents.

yunno, imagine a simple analog device that records your call and speeds it up. You then call the person at the other end, who would “download” the call at high speed - for a fraction of the time and expense - and then play it back at normal speed.

That might have been a much bigger hit.

I worked for a company that would do that to update the home office on the daily sales calls. Usually it took over 30 minutes to upload all that information. The company saved a bunch of money when you added up all the branches.
