I am currently reading Yergen’s _The Prize_* and the sections on Iran give some indications that it was a messed up territory and had some serious cultural and societal issues even before the British and then the Americans got involved in the area attempting to exploit the oil resources there.

* - I am taking bits of Yergen’s text with rather large grains of salt. His data and details on the oil industry is probably well researched and (I hope) fairly accurate. When he goes over into other areas affected by the main scope of the book I think he is trying to sum up or summarize things and oversimplifies them. Some of the text regarding military events and causes is essentially wrong the way he states it.

Riden with Biden. I think that some candidates who aren’t going to win are trying to sabotage him.

These past three weeks in general I have found this blog soothing compared to Twitter. Bring back the blogs. Less hectic and aggravating. And lets face it, some things can’t be explained in a short tweet. Blogs can also foster deeper conversation, longer conversation and more informed conversation.

According to Sean Hannity’s sources, President Trump ordered the strike on General Soleimani

I’m really confused about the origin of this strike. Trump actually heard of Soleimani? Was he mentioned on Faux News and did Fox and Friends advise this attack? Or was this something that Pompeo heard from his “friend” Bolton and thought it would be a good idea? If Bolton were still in the WH, this action would have not surprised me at all. But without him, who would be urging Trump to order this strike?

This sounds (distressingly) probable. AFAIK, the Iranians have been making nice with the Russians of late: mainly over carving up Syria into non-threatening bits: I wonder if this wasn’t in anticipation of something just like your scenario: with Russia and China lurking in the background, only too happy to see US influence diminished in yet another Mideast region.

Why don’t I believe that for a microsecond? Iran’s government isn’t particularly friendly, but they’re not stupid.

Moreover, if they wanted to do that, they wouldn’t have to wait for us to kill one of their top people first.

Iraq is the sort of place where roving militias are beholden to individual politicians or foreign actors (the sort of place we would be if we didn’t have at least minimal gun control laws).

From the Book of Lists:

Back in the 1920s, a German newspaper held a contest for the most sensational newspaper headline possible. Most of the entries dealt with things like Martians arriving or Jesus Christ coming back. The winner, though, was “ARCH-DUKE FRANZ FERDINAND ALIVE! WORLD WAR FOUGHT BY MISTAKE!”

Trump’s knavish actions often remind me of this story, though I am not sure why.

I’m wondering who was in command when this shit went down. Trump is on the golf course (or staying in his hotel), so… who was actually paying attention when the strike took place? That thought is a little sobering.

The drone controllers in Montana or wherever their kill rooms are hidden.

re: #114 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

My sister did that right after my father died. My guess is that it’s one variety of a coping mechanism. She left my mother alone and took it out on me since I’d just arrived at the same time my brother had had to leave.

She was doing everything from telling my wife what and how she had to eat (out of an alleged concern for our restaurant budget, and she didn’t really need to watch her diabetic diet) to what I was allowed to talk to my wife about in my sister’s presence.

When we blew out of my mother’s house, I called my mother and told her we did not feel welcome there, with my sister yelling I was a liar in the background.

My kid sister has been doing that to me for years.

My sister has been doing it all my life. I really thought this was over when we started conversing again a year or so ago.

In funny news though, somehow we got entangled with a Mennonite tour group at the museum. They treated us a lot more nicely.

Suleimani is gone, but his organization is still in place. Exciting times in the restaurant business.

“…Suleimani has orchestrated attacks in places as far flung as Thailand, New Delhi, Lagos, and Nairobi—at least thirty attempts in the past two years alone. The most notorious was a scheme, in 2011, to hire a Mexican drug cartel to blow up the Saudi Ambassador to the United States as he sat down to eat at a restaurant a few miles from the White House. The cartel member approached by Suleimani’s agent turned out to be an informant for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.”

Theologically? Forcing it ends badly. See why Moses ended dying on the wrong side of the Jordan. Now, arguing with God, even telling him he’s full of it and needs to change his mind?
