I keep telling myself that at this juncture, back in 2016, Trump was seen as a walking joke, a buffoon who spewed racist garbage, who would be the best of all possible opponents for Hilary, because anyone with half a working brain would see through him and the Democrats would power to a 49-state blowout should he be the GOP nominee.

Things change, folks.

At least, I hope they do.

CNN is reporting a ship that capsized last September is ready to slice up for removal.

the ship, which still has more than 4,000 cars on it, will be cut into eight giant pieces with a giant diamond-cutting chain suspended from a lift vessel, officials said.
Once the sawing starts, it won’t stop, and they think it will take 24 hours for each cut.
“That means noise through the night during some … periods,” said John Maddox, Georgia Department of Natural Resources on-scene coordinator.

Some good news:

Kemp Loses Vote Purge Suit Brought by Reporter Palast

In an extraordinary and unexpected move, Federal Judge Eleanor Ross has declared Gov. Brian Kemp the loser in a lawsuit brought by investigative journalist Greg Palast to compel the State of Georgia to open up its complete files on the mass purge of over half a million voters from the rolls.

Surprising all parties, the judge ruled that Kemp’s defense was so weak that no trial is needed. The judge acted “sua sponte” — on her own initiative, unrequested by Palast’s attorneys.

Palast has been fighting Kemp to release his hidden purge lists and methods for six years, for Rolling Stone, Aljazeera, Salon, Democracy Now and currently, The Guardian.

This is the sort of shit that Hitler used to justify the Night of the Long Knives, the idea that the SA and his political rivals were all part of a grand scheme to remove him from power. Then throwing in accusations such as rampant homosexuality and corruption to justify those arrests/executions that were seen as “problematic” among the public.

Some good news:

Kemp Loses Vote Purge Suit Brought by Reporter Palast

The Palast team is completing work on our short film of how exactly Brian Kemp illegally eliminated 340,134 voters from the rolls, stealing the election from Stacey Abrams. The Palast film then takes us to Wisconsin where the “Kemp” techniques are the center of a push block 247,000 voters, mostly Democrats and thereby keep Wisconsin, the swing state of swing states, in the Trump column.

Help us complete our investigation, dig into the purge lists and finish this film? It’s not about candidates, it’s about democracy. Donate.

For the US right wing, the first 20 years of the 21st century have been a story of ever-increasing radicalization. No doubt the seeds were always there, but this descent into bad craziness was what brought me back to my senses after 9/11. I saw the degradation happening up close and I fucking hated it - I hated the increasingly open racism and Islamophobia, dumbass anti-science crap-think, and caveman attitudes toward women. Eventually it got so repulsive, I just had to make a break from that crowd. And I’ve never regretted it.

GnR’s best moment?

“Civil War”

“What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.
Some men you just can’t reach…
So, you get what we had here last week, which is the way he wants it!
Well, he gets it!
N’ I don’t like it any more than you men.” *

Look at your young men fighting
Look at your women crying
Look at your young men dying
The way they’ve always done before

Look at the hate we’re breeding
Look at the fear we’re feeding
Look at the lives we’re leading
The way we’ve always done before

My hands are tied
The billions shift from side to side
And the wars go on with brainwashed pride
For the love of God and our human rights
And all these things are swept aside
By bloody hands time can’t deny
And are washed away by your genocide
And history hides the lies of our civil wars

D’you wear a black armband
When they shot the man
Who said, “Peace could last forever.”?
And in my first memories
They shot Kennedy
An’ I went numb when I learned to see
So I never fell for Vietnam
We got the wall of D.C. to remind us all
That you can’t trust freedom
When it’s not in your hands
When everybody’s fightin’
For their promised land

And
I don’t need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
You’re power hungry sellin’ soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain’t that fresh
I don’t need your civil war

No no no no no no!

Look at the shoes you’re filling
Look at the blood we’re spilling
Look at the world we’re killing
The way we’ve always done before
Look in the doubt we’ve wallowed
Look at the leaders we’ve followed
Look at the lies we’ve swallowed
And I don’t want to hear no more

My hands are tied
For all I’ve seen has changed my mind
But still the wars go on as the years go by
With no love of God or human rights
‘Cause all these dreams are swept aside
By bloody hands of the hypnotized
Who carry the cross of homicide
And history bears the scars of our civil wars

“We practice selective annihilation of mayors and government officials,
For example, to create a vacuum.
Then we fill that vacuum as popular war advances.
Peace is closer.” **

I don’t need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
You’re power hungry sellin’ soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain’t that fresh
And I don’t need your civil war
I don’t need your civil war
I don’t need your civil war
You’re power hungry sellin’ soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain’t that fresh
I don’t need your civil war
I don’t need one more war

I don’t need one more war
What’s so civil ‘bout war anyway?

Sadly, it’s not a uniquely American phenomenon. You look across the globe and you see a lost of the West is suffering the same shit: Late-stage capitalism, major demographic shifts, generational divide, and toxic nostalgia. In the US it’s leading to the first flowerings of authoritarian rule, in the UK it’s led to Brexit and the fantasy of Rule Britannia once again, the EU is dealing with the rise of fascism once again, and Japan is seeing the resurgence of nationalism as they grow farther and farther away from the horrors of WWII.

The media treated Hillary tripping down a icy step in the middle of winter as reason to question her health. Then not only devoted hourly coverage to her health after she fainted on a hot summer day due to dehydration, but treated it as a major political crisis when she admitted she’d been keeping quiet about suffering from walking pneumonia on the campaign trail.

But sure, let’s believe that they’ll act as if it’s not a biggie that Bernie had a heart attack and lied about it for days.

Define “good health.” Seriously, it’s a relative term because anybody can be in “good health” one moment and on Death’s short list the next. That a doctor says he’s not in danger of dropping dead from a heart attack this very moment doesn’t mean he’ll be in the same shape after six months on the job.

Reading this, rawstory.com, Graham is just the Senate’s version of Gohmert:

The CBS host pointed out that Vindman’s twin brother was also removed from the administration although he had no role in the Ukraine scandal.

“Nobody knows this!” Graham exclaimed. “I can promise you this, he has never been asked questions like, ‘Did you leak to the whistleblower?’ People in his chain of command have been suspicious of him regarding his political point of view.”

Brennan reminded Graham that the Trump administration is on record saying there were no leaks from the National Security Council.

“Well, I am not,” Graham stated. “I want the man to be asked about what he did with the information. I appreciate his service but there are FBI agents who took the law in their own hands, there are CIA agents who took the law into their own hands. There are Department of Justice lawyers who lied to the court. There’s been a movement since President Trump was elected by people in our government to bring him down.”

“Is this retaliation?” Brennan asked of Vindman’s firing.

Just like Trumpers.

From this am’s electoral-vote.com letter to the editors, one person’s perspective

From where I stand, Sanders is Trump, but with a different name. The only significant daylight I see between them is that Sanders appears to believe the populist rhetoric he promotes, whereas Trump uses it as a weapon to manipulate his cult. From my observations of Bernie and his Bros, dating back to 2015, this behavior is baked into him and the Bros’ culture. I have not yet drunk enough of the Kool-Aid or eaten enough applesauce/pudding to get to that unqualified, “yes, anyone but Trump.” It all depends on who that “anyone” is.

Certainly, Sanders has a long way to go to convince me that life for women, people of color, LGBTQ, or any other minority, under his regime, would be any better. Indeed, it could be worse, since everyone on the left would sigh with relief and then ignore the damage being promulgated by Bernie and his Bros. M.F., Santa Barbara, CA

Absolutely true. I was 9 years old. The Beatles on Ed Sullivan was a life-changing event for me, and all of the music I embraced after that night helped me survive my teens (and 20’s and 30’s and 40’s and 50’s and 60’s).

Some of this stuff is just obvious observations

Bernie’s strategy to gain down ballot votes:

• run for the Democratic Party’s nomination,
• claim you’re taking on the Democratic establishment,
• call the Democratic Party a corrupt tool of dark forces working against America,
• secure the nomination and ask people to vote for you, the leader of a corrupt party and all of the other corrupt Democrats

This is a clip from a documentary about The Byrds, but it’s an interesting look into how The Beatles arriving in America affected the commercial folk music that was really popular at the time (my mom loved those folk groups). It has one of the most racist versions of ‘Michael Row Your Boat Ashore’ that you’ll ever not want to hear again.

Part 2 is kind of interesting too.

I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that a huge percentage of the Republicans she worked with on the Goldwater campaign have since died, all with little or no notice from the mainstream media.

Classic ratatouille or a confit byaldi like in the movie?

More traditionale: make sauce with onion, crushed tomato, garlic, fine chopped mushroom, and flour for a little bit of a roux. Once that cooks down and starts taking on caramelization, I put in pan. Then the sliced veggies on top in tight pattern, brushed with olive oil and herbs. I like it hot so the veggies cook but don’t stew.

If you do it right you have a layer of brownish saucy goo on the bottom like a lasagne sauce. It’s very rich, but with the toasty veggies on top.

Today it’s eggplant, zuchs, and sweet peppers, with some more shitake and whole garlic cloves. .

My ex does a mean veggie lasagna - you have to par boil the noodles twice as long as usual since there isn’t any of the meat juice to soften them. Otherwise use thin sliced portabella for your meat, some bell pepper, tomato, eggplant, etc and you’re Bob’s Uncle.

Broccoli, surprisingly, is good in it too.

I stopped carrying a purse about 5 years ago. I have clothes with pockets and I carry what I really need in the pockets (credit cards, driver’s license, cash, car keys).

My mother told me she locked her purse in the trunk of her car after taking out just what she needed wherever she was going. She was afraid of a purse snatcher shoving her down, she didn’t care about losing the purse but she didn’t want to be pushed down.

I just took it a step further. NO PURSE = FREEDOM.

I can wear jeans at work, so I usually do, for the convenience of being able to stick folding money, credit card or debit card in a pocket when I go to grab food. Otherwise I prefer my purse. My mother is convinced I’m going to ruin my shoulder with all the stuff I carry (big wallet, two cellphones, power bank, some medications, a little of this and that and then sometimes I stick a laptop in there). My shoulder had ample opportunity to get ruined decades ago when I was in law school, and I carried my casebooks across campus in a huge canvas bag slung over my right shoulder and it didn’t happen.

re: #132 Backwoods_Sleuth

I was buying a new car in January 87 and wanted to trade in my 76 Toyota Corolla station wagon as the down payment. The dealership wanted to take the car out for an assessment drive but there were so many things wrong with the car that I wouldn’t let him drive it. He rode in the passenger seat.

When we were done, there was a big chunk of slush behind one of the rear tires that was stuck to the wrap-around rubber end of the back bumper, and I kicked at it while we were talking about the car. The whole rear corner of the bumper fell off the car and went ‘thumpsh’ in the parking lot. I casually opened up the lift gate and threw the bumper into the back of the car.

I wound up selling the car to my landlord instead, although when we were done negotiating a price for the new Mazda 323 station wagon, I found out that the dealer was expecting me to trade in the car. I said no, they weren’t getting the car, and the dealer had to leave to talk with the manager. The manager came back effecting exasperation that they weren’t getting the broken down Toyota, but they let me buy the Mazda for the price we’d negotiated.

My landlord owned a drug store in the building I was living in, and they used the Toyota for deliveries, so I still saw it every day in the parking lot until the pharmacists son ran into a backyard fence while speeding down an alley. The top rail of the fence pierced the windshield and barely missed the son’s head as it shot through the car.

I had that car through most of my days as a full-time musician. It did not lead a glamorous life.

Pockets are a bigger deal than you realize. Women’s clothes tend to have no pockets or ridiculously useless shallow for show pockets. I have a pair of all weather walking pants that have such shallow pockets I can’t carry anything in them. Dresses are notorious for lacking pockets, so having a couple of dresses on the red carpet with pockets is actually kind of a cool thing.

Oh I get it lol.

When we go out together my wife is constantly handing me shit to put in MY pockets because the clothes she is wearing either don’t have any or have ridiculously shallow ones.

They aren’t quite as bad as the Grammies (winner = biggest sales in category) but close enough that I would have a hard time caring less.

This year’s Oscars featuring stupid Texas high school administrators who won”t back down, no sir.

Maybe he never learned how things were in East Texas 90 years ago.

abc13.com

I want to wring this guy’s neck. Dress codes in the overwhelmingly white public schools I attended in the 1970s in Texas were geared towards white people. And they obsessed about hair length (for boys) and dress length and the (lack of) underwear for girls. The dress code did not acknowledge the existence of people of color and different types of hair. It was just assumed you were going to following the white conservative style of the time.

My brother got kicked out monthly to get a haircut because these numbnuts thought it was more important to see the bottom of your earlobes than to get an education.

And now my county has done this…

Montgomery County becomes first US county to ban discrimination based on natural hairstyles

Maryland’s Montgomery County is the first county in the United States to pass legislation banning discrimination based upon a person’s natural hairstyle.

The Montgomery County Council voted unanimously for the bill that prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, taxi service and other public accommodations. A person who is discriminated against can seek a civil penalty of up to $5,000 through the county’s Office of Human Rights.

Same here. The coaches would grab you by the head, and if any hair stuck out beyond their fingers, you got a “swat” with a wooden paddle.

I will join you in not watching. Haven’t seen most of the movies and those I have…

Marriage Story? I thought it was trite, boring and meh.

The Irishman? How did they spend $160+ million to make this? And furthermore, why?

I know it’s all subjective, but I really did not like either of these. Now going to watch Two Popes—Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce—how bad can it be?

Pockets are a bigger deal than you realize. Women’s clothes tend to have no pockets or ridiculously useless shallow for show pockets. I have a pair of all weather walking pants that have such shallow pockets I can’t carry anything in them. Dresses are notorious for lacking pockets, so having a couple of dresses on the red carpet with pockets is actually kind of a cool thing.

Viva the women’s clothes pocket revolution!

I won’t buy pants without pockets. And now, I also try to make sure that they are sufficiently deep to hold my cell. Yay for the pocket revolution!! They need to be everywhere.

We’re watching the DVR of the agility competition at Westminster’s dog show. Which is adorable and awesome. Way better than Oscars and humans, meh.

I spent the afternoon talking about mental health with my son and two of his friends, one of whom had to be hospitalized recently. All young men in their 20s on the autism spectrum and all having some sort of co-morbidity from mild to severe. I was so touched that my son’s friends felt like I was safe to talk to about something so stigmatized. I just hope I helped.

I was seriously considering starting a business altering existing shitty pockets in women’s clothes and making them bigger/deeper. Jeans especially have just ridiculously shallow pockets that serve no damned purpose except to annoy me that I don’t have functioning pockets in my fucking jeans.

I suppose we could all blame Azimov, but I believe Alan Turing has made the issue rather clear —that manmade computing devices (can potentially) have so much in common with biological life forms that at some future time, distinctions that we may wish to make between “alive” vs “machine” will become increasingly blurred.

Of course Turing’s accomplishments were motivated significantly by grief over the loss of a childhood friend, but that does not make him wrong.

POCKETS, PEOPLE…

POCKETS!!!

On Project Runway, pockets in women’s formal wear has been a crusade for at least three seasons. The contestants and the judges all make a big fuss about it, it can be the difference in who wins a particular challenge.

My brother has been talking about this since some time in 2017. I suspect that even Barr might be too cautious to implement this purge — at least until after Trump is re-elected.

Oh, the q-tips dark fantasies are never going to actually happen- that’s the whole point.

It’s about helping the rubes chase that ephemeral, frothing rage high over vague somethings that will always be happening in “just a matter of days.”
