“Barr…felt the tweet…[gave] people reason to
wonder whether thenotice that the Dept had been corrupted by political influence”
I mean it’s absolutely insane cart before horse shit. He, personally, took the wholly fucking unprecedented action of rescinding a prosecution sentencing recommendation that had already been fucking signed and filed with the goddamned Court. And it did it based on some vague notion that he disagreed with the length of the sentence, not that Stone wasn’t guilty or that the prosecutors had calculated the offense level incorrectly, just that it was “too long.” This is why all four, plus now Liu had to quit, because Barr was demanding they go back in Court, debase themselves and immolate their reputations in the fire of a lie.
The Federal Sentencing Guidelines hold sway over a lot of people’s lives, and our system of justice becomes intrinsically corrupt if its mechanisms work completely differently for friends of the President.
Very interesting that Trump hasn’t attacked William Barr for telling him to stop tweeting about his plans to abuse power. Trump attacks everyone who criticizes him, but not Barr.

Trump repeated the “theory” that the virus will die in April. His CDC director told CNN in an interview: “This virus is probably with us beyond this season, beyond this year, and I think eventually the virus will find a foothold and we will get community-based transmission.”

Trump tells the version of the story where San Diego begged him to build wall, but then after it was built they said the wall wasn’t wanted, so he threatened to uproot it and erect it elsewhere, and they said “no no no don’t do that.” This is very elaborate imaginary history.

Meanwhile, the US political media steadfastly refuses to report on this as the creeping authoritarianism that it is.
By now incompetence has to be ruled out, leaving only deliberate malice as the motive.

A report from cybersecurity company Malwarebytes concluded that Mac computers are more vulnerable to software threats than Microsoft Windows systems. The report observed greater growth in Mac-targeting adware and potentially unwanted programs compared to Windows, and threats to Mac PCs increased 400% year-over-year in 2019. Meanwhile, Mac detections per endpoint increased from 4.8 in 2018 to 11 in 2019, which was nearly twice as many for Windows. Mac threats also topped Malwarebytes’ overall threat detections list for the first time, with the NewTab and PCVARK exploits ranking second and third, respectively, on the list of the most prevalent threat detections across all platforms. Malwarebytes suggested Macs may be more appealing targets due to their growing market share, while iPhones may be susceptible to iOS malware because there is no way “to scan for it.”

He could be just stupid. The UK always had a carve-out from Schengen, so going through immigration is nothing new, and he seems to be in the EU/Swiss/UK/Ireland line anyway.
Nothing has changed in that way yet in the UK post-Brexit, since the Withdrawal Agreement mandated that the UK follow all EU rules until the end of 2020 (and therefore become a complete rule-taker, but anyway). What happens then who knows, because it’s complete amateur hour chaos in Blighty.

So, some context here: All Elite Wrestling, a recent upstart national wrestling promotion, just recently crowned a new Women’s champion in Nyla Rose. The rub: Nyla Rose is a transwoman. So it’s heartening to see her fellows on the AEW roster backing her up, but good lord. The trans hate is just amazingly demoralizing, especially from folks otherwise dedicated to LGBT issues, and as anecdotal as it might be, the attitudes I’ve seen are just as violently hateful, if not moreso, among the younger gens as they are the older ones. This is not something that seems to be going away demographically, which is why it seems to be such a successful wedge for conservatives.

A quick update for all who lent their support:
My daughter is doing okay today. She’s calmed down from yesterday but we’ve seen the return of some rocking/self-stim behaviors she had outgrown in the past few years. We spent the afternoon shopping together: V-Day candy and treats for her as well as the “You are my sunshine” necklace I bought her (I sing her that every night at bedtime so its something really meaningful to me lol)
No response from the school district administrator to my email. At all. Not so much as a “we’re still gathering information and will contact you soon”. Following William’s advice, I’ll be sending the letter again, this time certified mail and much more direct in demanding answers and action.
WLUK, the local Fox affiliate, reached out to my ex-wife via Facebook wanting to do an interview. She politely declined, saying that we wanted to retain legal representation first. The reporter left contact info and invited us to reach out when we were ready.
The acting principal who was personally involved in the incident yesterday called me to reach out and “see how my daughter was doing”. He then proceeded to mention “Oh yeah, did you know your ex-wife has a FB post out there about the incident?”. My simple “Yes” was met by like 15 seconds of dead silence like he wanted me to say something more. This is actually the second time (the first was when I went to the school yesterday) that they’ve tried to play her and I against each other, divide and conquer is the strategy I guess? Anyways, not working since we’re both fired up and pretty much in lockstep with what we’re doing here.
We’ve also reached out to the ACLU, disability advocacy groups, etc. trying to find an attorney to represent us; not much interest being shown in the case by anyone so far unless we’re willing to lay down a huge retainer (which is unlikely to happen). But we’ll keep working on that end of things.
Thank you again for all of your support and good wishes. I’m going to be checking out after posting this and spend the night binging on as much Disney+ as my sunshine can watch lol.
Good night all, thank you again, and happy Valentine’s Day. May your lives be filled with love!

Finally changed my voter registration today. I was an R but now I’m a proudly U - Undeclared voter. Now before you chastise me for being an R for so long let me explain. My wife made the same change.
Here in AK the D’s have an open primary while the R’s have always had a closed primary. This year, the Republicans cancelled their primary. I was an R so I could vote for anyone in the R contest who opposed Don Young and Lisa Murkowski. Just trying to do my little bit to get rid of those two. Yes, I know it’s a futile effort up here in red Alaska, but it made me feel good.
Our other Republican Senator, Dan Sullivan, is up for re-election his year. He’s another Senator who is living up trump’s ass. There maybe an unexpected upset in this race.
A lot has been going on behind the screens up here. There is a very serious effort to recall our Republican Governor Dunleavy. He made a lot of promises he hasn’t or even wanted to keep. Good chance he’ll be kicked out.
Also there’s a voter initiative going around to totally revamp the taxes the oil cartel pays to Alaska. Right now we’re paying them about 1.5 Billion $’s per year as an incentive to explore and produce more. And they’re not exploring or increasing production. This subsidy stays on the oil company books until they decide to cash it in. A potential very big, long term liability.

Wow, at what level does it go before the folks wailing for their wall that look the other way as Trump turns the US into Nazi Germany, figure out we’re there - that we’ve arrived? Do they actually have to see receipts for Zyklon B before they wake up, or do all roundups and little fascist perks finally add up to a moment of clarity? At what point does it become clear we are not the United States of early 2016?

I very much fear the answer to all these questions is ‘never’. The US right has no apparent way to reverse (or even slow down) its headlong plunge into fascism. IMO overwhelming losses are the only possible thing that might alter US right wing ‘thinking’.
Preferably those losses will be peaceful losses in elections.

I’ve written before, that I think Stewart does the best of all the ST actors. Picard is well produced, though in the latest episode I caught a couple of lines that indicated the writers still don’t double check claims that have to do with real knowledge (in this episode it was the number of stars in the galaxy.)
Some have criticized Picard for being too dark. ST is part of the post 9/11 world now - idealism is out the window.

Local and regional politics are complicated

The problem, of course, is in the news it produces:
Though it is part of the Pentagon’s Defense Media Activity, Stripes retains its editorial independence and is congressionally mandated to be governed by First Amendment principles.
In other words, Stars and Stripes is everything Trump hates in a news organization:
Stars and Stripes is editorially independent of interference from outside its own editorial chain-of-command. It provides commercially available U.S. and world news and objective staff-produced stories relevant to the military community in a balanced, fair, and accurate manner. By keeping its audience informed, Stars and Stripes enhances military readiness and better enables U.S. military personnel and their families stationed overseas to exercise their responsibilities of citizenship

Speaking of Flynn, we never really heard the end of how Flynn was apparently working for the Turkish government as an undeclared foreign agent. One of the things Flynn was doing was to try and get the US government to deport/extradite/otherwise get rid of Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish exile in Pennsylvania. Now to be very clear, Gülen is not exactly a great guy. Even if you discount his possible involvement in the 2014 coup attempt, which is fairly easy to do since the accusations come from Erdogan, there still remains the fact that his followers have founded dozens of charter schools across the USA and are merrily taking advantage of state legislators throwing money at these unproven outfits.
We never really found out how deep Flynn was in that mess.

Trump thinks economy is great.
Trump claims we’re in a national emergency to deny/limit wage hikes promised to federal workers.
Trump claims economy is best ever.
Trump demands interest rate cuts to goose economy.
The reality is the economy is doing okay but could be better but for Trump’s idiotic trade war. The tax cuts didn’t grow the economy - it only grew debt and millionaires got richer. It was a redistribution effort that didn’t help most Americans.
So now Trump’s going on about how they’re working on another tax cut for middle class. No one should count on any of it. It’s vaporware.

Your precious “indepdendents” at work. Aided and abetted by a chickenshit press.
Prime example is the news that Trump essentially admitted that he lied about sending Rudy to Ukraine for the Biden bullshit.
This should be fucking front page news. The problem is Trump didn’t specifically admit to lying. He just ran off at the mouth like he usually does and tripped himself up.
But since he didn’t cop to it in a supervillain-style soliloquy, both the press and the average voter is like “Well, let’s not rush to judgement here.”

A new Yahoo News/YouGov poll shows that Sen. Bernie Sanders would defeat each of the other Democratic presidential candidates in a one-on-one race — in many instances by double-digit margins.
Down in the story, as if we didn’t know:
“Of course, the Democratic primary isn’t a two-way race”
duh
so if it was a different kind of race, other than the one it is, the results would be different. than what they are. wow.
next they’ll start pairing bernie against who? or what?
what a waste of pixels.
I checked the Wikipedia entry on the YouGov poll — am not totally clear on the exact mechanism but it does seem the poll structure is not particularly reliable. It seems to be constructed like the infamous 1936 Literary Digest poll — where the group that was polled was not representative of the population. I would ignore its assertions entirely.
To prove that social media is skewed against reality, the top trend on Twitter right now in the US is…….
