Health officials: U.S. nearing coronavirus pandemic

[…] Dr. Leonard Marcus, Co-Director of the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative at the Harvard School of Public Health […]

Marcus said that Americans should not panic but, there are things that should be done in order to prepare for what health officials believe to be an inevitability.

[…]

While Marcus believes the chance of contracting coronavirus is still low, he said that the chance that everyday life will be disrupted by the spread is much higher.

“They could cancel public events and if there are many, many people who are contracting the disease, as we saw in Wuhan they might discourage people from going outside for some period of time,” he said.

Marcus said that it is still a mystery as to why very few children have contracted the novel coronavirus.

Thoughts of the TV adaptation of Childhood’s End comes to mind.

[…]

Marcus confirmed that Harvard University has received a $500 million grant from a private company in China to develop a vaccine to treat the virus.

He said it could be more than 9 months before experts are able to develop that vaccine.

Cults are always bad, never good:

Coronavirus’ rapid spread in South Korea linked to secretive church

The number of South Koreans infected by the novel coronavirus was announced to have hit 1,595 by Thursday morning, marking a rapid increase after passing the 1,000 mark on Wednesday, and with hundreds of the cases linked to the Shincheonji Church of Jesus religious group.

Infections in the country have multiplied more than 40 times in the past 10 days, despite the government’s heightened alert status. The death toll is 12.

[…]

South Korea’s first case of the COVID-19 infection was found at a Shincheonji Church of Jesus premises in the southeastern city of Daegu. Infections reportedly then spread among church members who had spent long periods of time together in closed rooms.

According to local media reports, one member who had symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 refused to undergo tests recommended by a physician at a hospital, and left the premises. The individual then moved around the city, attending a social meal and a service, meanwhile spreading the disease to others.

[…]

The church has agreed to a request by the South Korean government to submit a list of several hundred followers who attended the same church services as infected people and whose whereabouts are unknown.

But media reports have suggested that followers of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus usually hide their religious beliefs. Furthermore, the religious group is believed to be making it difficult for its followers to be identified by telling them to attend churches across the country, rather than in Daegu.

I’d say every Shincheonji deserves a drawn-out and unpleasant death at this point, but the problem is I wouldn’t be wishing anything on them they may not have already sentenced themselves to. Along with every Korean Methodist they infect by going stealth in their churches since their sanctuary is closed for the duration.

Trump is competing with Iranian leaders for the stupidest reactions to COVID-19:

Iran’s response to coronavirus to surprise the world: Minister

Iran’s health minister has vowed that the country would surprise the world with its way of dealing with a coronavirus that has claimed more than two dozen lives since it break out in the country last week.

Saeid Namaki made the remarks in a letter addressed to the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on Thursday.

The letter came after Ayatollah Khamenei thanked Namaki and all medical personnel across Iran for their efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The minister said in his letter that all government departments had joined in the fight against coronavirus in a “unique show” of solidarity.

“This, without any question, would surprise the entire world when the disease is brought to its knees,” wrote Namaki.

Knows/doesn’t know isn’t really black and white in this case, because we’re not dealing with people that think in ways that fit with the general understanding of “belief” as something solid. Trump is saying contradictory things and untrue things and believing them, because ultimately he has no interest in describing what is real, only how to avoid negative consequences and appropriate good results. His people are echoing it because ultimately they hold the same standard of veracity, that there is no truth except what they can make true.

Which is scarier than just being liars, because they’re going to expect to be taken seriously and their prescriptions obeyed, not questioned, but are also going to be enraged when their untruths do not produce results that were never capable of producing.

It’s like a gambler who believes their system is always responsible for their wins, but claim their losses are not just because of the house cheating, but because someone else forced them to make a bet.

Yeah I’ve studied Nixon a little- wrote a paper on him in college that required me to read some Nixon biographies including his own memoirs so I understand Nixon’s psychology a little bit. Trump I don’t think I can remotely comprehend. Weirdly and I despise the man though I know he accomplished things, Nixon’s paranoia and persecution complex was a little understandable. Of course, that doesn’t excuse the things he did that led up to his impeachment and other things that were only known later.

Ah yeah, I could see Trump having Jon Voight play him. Voight’s a kooky wingnut now which is too bad since I don’t think he’s a bad actor but his right wing hackery is sad. Don’t know when he turned or was he always a wingnut. Voight actually proves the whole conservatives are victims of liberal hollywood bs to be just that though. I still think that the first Trump toady to look up the personality cult of Turkmenbashi and start making corresponding suggestions to Trump will get at least a cabinet position out of it.

E.g., Trump would love to have a giant gold-plated statue of himself erected on the White House lawn, on a motorized base so it forever faces the sun.

Go back through time and authoritarians of all stripes, all the way back to monarchs, end up using masculinity as part of their justification of power. This inevitably requires counterfeiting and moving goalposts.

Yet it works consistently, because there are a pool of people who accept the premise that there is something inherently worthwhile in “manliness” such they that don’t notice or care when all the supposedly good qualities are swapped out or mitigated.

I talk a lot about words that are empty of meaning, and “masculinity” is such a venerable repeat offender.

Glad to hear it. I like to play talent scout when looking at our Reps and Senators and seeing where they might fit in for future leadership positions within Congress, Cabinet, or maybe even the presidency. Murphy I think is the youngest Democrat maybe even the youngest person period in the Senate. He seems very much on top of his game. I could see him running for POTUS one day, chairing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, or being SoS. And I see that the sub-committee he chairs is a very important one- United States Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia and Counterterrorism. Oh? I’ve been thinking about the delegate math.

The superdelegates have a combined 771 votes.

1991 is a clear majority of pledged delegates, but to win on the second (or subsequent) ballot, you need a majority with the superdelegates included, which means a minimum of 2375.5.

If the leader has any fewer than 1605 pledged delegates (slightly more than 40%), the superdelegates alone can’t decide the nomination. There aren’t enough of them.

In this scenario, the only way to win is to peel off delegates from other candidates.

What’s on Mike Pence’s schedule as coronavirus point man? A fundraiser in Florida.

The country’s new point man on coronavirus response, Vice President Mike Pence, is expected to travel to Florida on Friday — but not on a public health mission.

Instead, Pence is headed to the moneyed barrier island town of Longboat Key, where he’ll be the main attraction for Congressional Republicans in one of their biggest fundraisers of the year.

It’s $2,500 to get in the door and $5,000 to take a picture with the vice president, according to an invite obtained by the Tampa Bay Times. And $25,000 buys dinner with him, too.

Breaking News! First Case of Coronavirus Confirmed in Lagos

The statement said, “the case is an Italian citizen who works in Nigeria and returned from Milan, Italy to Lagos, Nigeria on the 25th of February 2020. He was confirmed by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, part of the Laboratory Network of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. The patient is clinically stable, with no serious symptoms, and is being managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos.”

Seems like Italy is the gateway for transmission to many parts of the world. I wonder how many tourists from China ended up in Italy, or if it was a commercial ship.

Regardless, so many nations do not have the resources to handle outbreaks as well as we do. Or did, before Trump.

Erdogan wanted us out of northern Syria so he could conduct this lone wolf adventurist bullshit and commit genocide against the Kurds. Now he’s learning that Russia doesn’t treat their forces with quite the same level of respect that they treated ours. It’s also not like he can plausibly invoke Article 5 and expect NATO to actually lift a finger so he’s left with this paper thin redirection of blame that nobody actually believes.

Health Minister: 0 Coronavirus Cases Due to Prayers and Action

In his visit to the seventh Indonesian Muslim Community Congress on Wednesday, Health Minister Terawan Agus Putranto said preventive measures done by the government added to constant collective prayers so far have helped prevent the spread of coronavirus or COVID-19 in Indonesia.

“It is important for me to participate in Indonesia’s muslim congress as I am present here to ask for your prayers,” said Terawan on Thursday, February 27.

The Health Minister asserts that prayer is one of many factors that helped the virus from spreading in Indonesia, which is one of many countries with zero reported cases coronavirus.

[…]

During the same congress, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin also said that prayers from Ulema played a major role in preventing the coronavirus from spreading into Indonesia.

“There are many kyai (Islamic teachers) and Ulema who constantly recite the ‘qunut’ prayers to dismiss dangers and diseases. This is why the coronavirus is not in Indonesia,” said the VP.

Of course, that doesn’t excuse the things he did that led up to his impeachment and other things that were only known later.

trump makes nixon look like a saint

I rewatched that Spongbob 1917 video, and was reading through the comments. It led me to this:

That fat ignorant fuck sure says “we’ll see what happens” an awful lot. It’s not something I would expect to hear so often from a stable genius who knows the most about everything.

Wait - I think I just got what he means by “stable genius” - when it is just him and the horses in there, he is the genius of the stable. (Except there is no way he is smarter than a horse.)

Or the Battle of the Crater.

Probably all his administration remembers about that is black people being killed by white people and no one getting arrested.

Obviously!
