So with Italy’s latest report, they’ve change the global statistics on the percent of deaths among closed cases from 7% to 8%.

Italy’s report also brought about a new signpost: first time global cases have increased by more than 10k in one day. Note that the Chinese reported more than 10k in a day just once, but that is because the records are by report dates, and the Chinese submitted a bunch of data on one day, not that all the cases happened on one day.

President Trump’s approval rating has fallen significantly amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Both traditional polls and aggregations have shown that the president’s approval rating has fallen over the last two weeks. More than 1,100 people in the United States have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, and at least 32 of those patients have died.
Trump’s approval index on Feb. 25 stood at +1, according to Rasmussen, a right-leaning polling company that tracks the president’s approval rating on a daily basis. On Wednesday, that number fell to -11.
And the source of this story? The Washington Examiner. Even outlets who normally kiss Trumps ass are bailing on him.

They didn’t move fast enough to contain, and then their public health systems got overwhelmed. There’s also a socioeconomic component to it - parents live with their parents, and possibly their grandparents in the same building. Family units spread it from the kids who might be asymptomatic to the parents, who might have more serious but survivable cases, but the grandparents and great grandparents die.
It’s also why the worst case scenario is this hitting nursing homes, adult day care facilities, active adult communities, etc., because it will kill with ruthless efficiency.

Well, in this case, she’s absolutely right. Trump’s toxic combination of narcissism and paranoia isn’t really doing the country much good in the face of a burgeoning pandemic. I went to the laundromat on Friday right after work because there’s usually no one else there at that time. There was one young woman who left for a while and came back to throw her stuff in the dryer. She was feeling chatty and was talking about how the virus didn’t seem like a big deal at her doctor’s office earlier in the day. She said that she wasn’t that worried about it and I told her that I’m scared to death of it. She got the message and went to the other side of the laudromat to use her laptop.

I get the feeling that Sanders is likely going to go for an all-or-nothing scorched earth tactic tonight, trying to push his “Medicare for All” campaign saying if it were in place the outbreak would be insignificant in the US - and will backfire spectacularly as Biden will counter with how both Italy, Iran and China all have healthcare fully run by their respective governments…

On a more serious note, I wonder how long it’s gonna take for international tourism to recover. Prague, as an example, gets a nice bit of revenue from international tourism every year (IIRC, Prague received some 10.6 million tourists in 2018) and tourism accounts for 3% of annual Czech GDP and directly employs some 250,000 people. One of my friends here, who previously owned a travel agency, he reckoned it’s going to take three years minimum before tourism returns to pre-outbreak levels.
This is really gonna hurt a lot of countries….a lot of people are going to be reluctant to travel anywhere anytime soon.

On Friday, the Mesa (Arizona) Public Schools announced it was going to open after spring break on Monday but with caveats (stay away if you’re sick, in a high risk group or just returned from spring break in certain countries).

Who the hell knows—this is South Carolina we’re talking about—
Of the three new cases in Horry County, two involve elderly individuals who were exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19 from another state
(no mention of symptoms)
The two other confirmed cases in Kershaw County involve people who are household contacts to a previously reported case
(no mention of symtoms)

My father was the American Head of Food and Agriculture for the State Rhein-Hesse in the American Military District of Occupied Germany after World War 2 when it was facing starvation. He used to talk about a source of local protein as being the Dachhase. (Known in English as “Roof Rabbit”.) The cry of the Dachhase was ‘meow’.
I do not think that he was joking.
And of course, Brazil has the infamous “Churrasquinho de gato”. Which do not sell cat meat… Probably…
My pastor preached today on this subject - actually rewrote his planned sermon at 6:00 on Saturday night because he felt it was so urgent that he/we address this. Hoarding is not the answer. Panic is not the answer. Be prepared for extended isolation (weeks), be smart about it, but don’t fall prey to the temptation to keep up with the Joneses when it comes to acquiring toilet paper/bottled watter/meat/canned food/whatever the next hoarding fad is. Now, more than ever, we need to think rationally and calmly and plan our reactions.
Searching asian grocery stores on twitter shows this appears to be nationwide

I agree, somewhat. But I also think a week isn’t enough. If you’re in the target group (60+), a few weeks of food, even if it’s rice and beans) makes sense because we’re on the upside of the curve and I’m not too excited about going out.
From the previous thread:
re: #367 William Lewis
Yes. We know. You tell us a dozen times a day how you should have been murdered by ebil Christianists a thousand million billion times by now.
Intense prejudice exists against atheists in the US (Quartz, Dec 31)
Hey Joe, get a load of this.
You know, it’s kind of like other groups who are routinely discriminated against. When one is not part of that group it’s really hard to get them to care about it.
No I haven’t been killed yet, though myself and my family have been threatened including my infant son (followed by the endless litany of “they’re not true Christians”).
I have been made homeless from a Christian judge though (funny how I mention being homeless far more than being an atheist but that doesn’t seem to set people off the same way). That’s okay though, we have a Nazi in my government seat in my town though, because they are preferred over us.
FOX and CNN churn out constant propaganda against atheists: We’re paedophiles, we’re murderers (how many abortion clinics have we blown up in the name of our god), we’re untrustworthy, we’re rapists, &c.
The sad thing about that comment is how many people upvoted it.
It took forty years to get the Democratic Party to acknowledge we exist, for the first time last year. The Republican Party has it in their platform to ban us from society.
Forgive me if it hurts your feelings to hear about what people in your faith and others do to us. Perhaps if I only talk about atheist bloggers in Bangladesh and India being murdered by Hindus you’ll be more comfortable, or Muslim-majority nations having the death penalty for apostasy or outlawing us as terrorists.
If it was a Jewish person here, or a woman, or an African-American, or other group there would be all sorts of support on this forum for that person facing discrimination or threats.

We have enough to reasonably eat for a couple of weeks. The dog has enough to eat for 6 weeks. So the only hoarding we have done is an extra 5 lb bag of dog food.
Food for the dog and cats for a few weeks was the only reason we braved the Kroger debacle on Friday.
Also used the opportunity to stock up on coffee and a lot of different varieties of herbal teas.
We also stopped by the farm supply store for some cold weather veggie seedlings and seeds

I could be wrong but I don’t think this panic buying will last much longer. The stores will restock, it’s what they do. The panic strikes me as pretty irrational tbh. I mean, sure, buy for a few days or maybe a week, but hoarding is nutty.
I hope you’re right: but for any of us who might actually have to “quarantine” (self-imposed or otherwise), the problem may not be so much one of supply, as distribution. FWIW, I think you’re right about the restocking thing: so far, it doesn’t seem like the food and/or household-goods supply lines aren’t going to be running as normal. But then again, we aren’t that “far”…. I tried to put in an order with one of our local online grocery providers this afternoon (Fresh Direct): and they had no delivery slots available all of next week (which is as far ahead as you can schedule). And when I called to check up on this I was told wait times were “45 minutes to two hours”. Fortunately, I can still go out to shop in person, but it struck me that, if (God Forbid) I couldn’t, due to quarantine, or (God Forbid Twice) infection, we would definitely have a serious problem (Mrs. Jay can barely walk: which is why I have to do all the shopping).

Now, I will say I’m a bit torn. Biden needs the practice, and I think in front of cameras will be far better for him than behind closed doors. Plus, I think attendance in the primaries, even with the virus, will help turnout in the fall. So I kind of think at least a few more dates need to go on.

My daughter is freaking out that I don’t have a supply of food. It’s NYC. I can isolate, but I can’t live in fear. How much do I really need to stalk up?
Folks need to be reasonable. If you’ve got canned goods, you can get through this. Check your pantry, see what you normally eat over the week. Try to have some variety, but keep it simple all the same.
I’ve got cereal for breakfasts. Eggs and bisquick for making pancakes/waffles. Frozen blueberries from last year (to make blueberry pancakes). I’ve got a couple quarts of frozen chicken stock too (can defrost and use as a base for other soups). You can get the packaged soups to do same. Picked up some frozen fruit (which if not used now, can be used to make sangria later).
Biggest thing for us is getting enough fruit and vegetables. We got a bunch of apples, which can keep a couple weeks. A pineapple that can go a week, a melon that can also go a week or so, etc. Frozen vegetables.
As for meat, I got 4 pound package of kosher chicken breasts, divided that up and froze it to defrost at intervals. Pasta and sauces were already in the pantry. We were trying to go through all this for Passover, but now it looks like we may not be doing a seder if we’re all under quarantine/isolation due to cases running rampant. Ground turkey. Hot dogs. Buns. We’re good - and it’s just the two of us so we should manage.
There are food delivery services that can help fill in the gaps. And restaurants that do deliver should do well now - it’s the ones that don’t normally do delivery that may suffer horribly.

Lots of Vy-enners and deviled ham tins, though. No tuna or other canned fish/shellfish left, except for “mackerel snacks”. Oh, and anchovies.

Disney+ just gave me a 2 week free trial. Mandalorian binge here I come.
And I am happy to admit that I will watch all those Disney princess movies. And all the stuff that you can’t normally see because they don’t release them to dvd or blu ray except to goose their profits with a new cut.

Over to Turkish, Russian, Chinese and Korean costume drama.

That’s one I’d like to get into. I think I saw one of the actors in another series called Generation War. Lot of good foreign series on Netflix. Some good ones on Amazon too.

I may see about trying to binge on Babylon 5, if I can find it somewhere.
Come on now, be fair, they gave Obama a pass on so many things, it makes sense they’d forget to ever mention this allegedly catastrophic response among his so-called scandals until now, 11 years later

There was one I saw called Charite at War that really good about a hospital in Berlin. I really want to learn more about the Frankfurt area’s history during the war and lead up to it since that’s where my father’s grandfather was born. From what one of my German cousins told me, Frankfurt is pretty liberal.

one of my neighbors has chickens for fresh eggs, another has beehives for honey.
I will have fresh fruit and veg if this goes on.
I also have farm equipment available for loan.
neighbors are also hunters, and there is a huge population of whitetail deer and turkeys on my 200 acre mostly managed-timber farm.
We’re in good shape

I have enough food for about 10 days in the house. Lots of beans and rice.
My brother is a (dilettante) prepper. He has a couple weeks of prepper food, which he’d prefer not to break into. He’s got two weeks of non-prepper food on hand. He generously (and without me asking) said that I could eat with them if things got bad. If things get that bad I’m picking up my important stuff (cat, laptops, monitors, surge protectors, phones, etc.) and moving in. I don’t think it will get that bad.
In the meantime, since we’re all practicing social distancing, I’ll probably eat over there a couple nights a week. I pointed out that if any one of us (me, Mom, him) got sick, we’d all have to self-quarantine. I hope that does not happen.
Right now I’m blasting ’80s hits.

Yeah I did a couple weeks ago. Glad I did see that. I saw a fascinating Russian series set in Belarus called Hunting the Galitener.

Yikes, just looked at Amazon and it’s totally sold out of bottled water. All kinds, even the expensive Evian and Fiji water.
Ok, I get Flint and everything, but how do you get to be so stupidly pessimistic as to think that a pandemic is going to take your water supply out but also so optimistic as to think that a few packs of bottled water will get you through?

One of our cats decided to pitch in to the common larder, and brought in a snake yesterday.
Well done that cat. Carry on.
329 cases in NYC alone. 5 dead in NYC alone (which is 1.5% or 15x higher than the flu). The cases are growing exponentially, here and across the nation.
The NYC school closure has potential to close for the rest of the school year. Telelearning is possible, but if you don’t have a computer or internet connection, that’s not going to be possible. There’s a lot to shake out here.
Mall closures are going to be coming too, along with restaurants and bars.
If Trump thinks a fucking rate cut is going to juice the markets, he’s going to be in for a rude awakening. Rate cuts don’t stop a pandemic. Public health programs do - and he’s intent on still gutting those. Trump profits from the rate cut, not from public health programs. That’s what is driving this.

And to follow up on my re: #449 : if you do use (or plan to use) a food-delivery service: order soon and give yourself some lead-time (if necessary). I just (after 1h45) got a call back from Fresh Direct: and yes indeed, they ARE booked up for the entire week. The best they could suggest was to wait til 12:01am: that’s when their system opens up the slots for the NEXT open day (i.e. 3/23). Really useful…..///
My school district has shifted its position slightly. They have cancelled all non-school use of the school’s facilities in Dalton and Gurley (next two villages south). School at this time still remains open. Future Farmers of America meetings, and district and statewide debate and speech competitions are also cancelled.
leytonwarriors.org (Leyton Public School, Dalton, Nebr.)
School is closed for the other school district serving my village (Bridgeport, the county seat).
This leaves the interesting problem in a town of 128 that half the students will go to school and the other half won’t.
We really need a statewide or federal coordinated response to this. Unfortunately, we’re run by conservatives.

Paul Ordos (famous mathematician) always kept a packed suitcase and “go baggage” handy. Maybe it’s like that.
