Vote Cthulhu - No longer the greater evil!  Mar 15, 2020 • 5:16:40pm

Debate update:
Bernie is doubling down on universal healthcare and Biden is hammering him on it, explaining the differecnce between an national emergency and how Medicare for All didn’t do squat against the pandemic in Italy (where over 300 people died TODAY)

I could almost respect Bernie if he actually you know passed legislation instead of being an asshole who thinks it’s all about him.

From the previous thread:

re: #559 Anymouse 🌹🎃

My school district has shifted its position slightly. They have cancelled all non-school use of the school’s facilities in Dalton and Gurley (next two villages south). School at this time still remains open. Future Farmers of America meetings, and district and statewide debate and speech competitions are also cancelled.

leytonwarriors.org (Leyton Public School, Dalton, Nebr.)

School is closed for the other school district serving my village (Bridgeport, the county seat).

This leaves the interesting problem in a town of 128 that half the students will go to school and the other half won’t.

We really need a statewide or federal coordinated response to this. Unfortunately, we’re run by conservatives.

For those people who doubted Joe Biden’s ability to be a leader in a crisis, this debate is proving to address those fears without ANY dispute. From a standpoint of being the calm person in charge, Biden is absoultely OWNING this debate.

I have been arguing on FB with a couple libertarian types. They seem incapable of looking beyond themselves - “I’m healthy! I’m not old! I’m not gonna let some virus change how I live!” I really think it’s not JUST that they’re assholes. I think they have some kind of mental block that prevents them from seeing group effects, or thinking about making sacrifices for somebody that they don’t know.

And then I look on FB last night, and my niece’s estranged husband - who I guess had their teen boys that night - is bowling with one while the other’s at a birthday party.

Have to say, I’m kinda proud of my city. Took the dog for a walk and got some takeout. The streets are really empty. People are taking this shit seriously.

Our Governor and Mayor are both very smart and have been a calming influence. Also, we’ve got a drive up test center at the west side Presbyterian Hospital.

Still too many cars in restaurant parking lots including Buffalo Wild Wings. Dude, there aren’t any games. Just get takeout. But all in all, much better than I expected.

I need to walk my dog a couple of times a day, so it’s good that people aren’t milling around acting like things are normal.

Why are people being told not to take pictures of the crowds at JFK? Who is telling them not to take photos? TSA? DHS?

Because right now, the single biggest national security threat is sitting in the WH doing absolutely nothing but manipulating stock markets with his demands, slow rolling tests, and taking unilateral actions on travel with no consultation with our allies anywhere.

Trump’s made a total mess of this, and funneling everyone into a single line to get screened is a recipe that even more cases go through.

It’s possible that they are using an autopen for the signatures - I’m not sure on the legality of using a duplicated signature versus a hand signature on a memorandum (as these are) versus a sworn affadavit.

From the last thread:

re: #244 John Hughes

As a Brit the 24 hour clock took a bit of getting used to, but, damn is it easier and less error prone.

Quick question — what is the minute after 11:59 AM? And the one after? Now do the same thing with seconds, microseconds…

[grammar pedant]

The correct rendering of the minute after 11:59 AM is 12 M (meridiem). However, it is rarely used.

English, Canadian, American style guides, along with the NIST say that 12 AM and PM are deprecated, and in writing noon and midnight should be used.

In US military timekeeping, 2400 is deprecated in favour of 0000 (midnight is the start of a new day, not the end of the old one).

If you were writing the first microsecond after midnight, it would be AM.

[/pedant]

re: #153 Don’t Blame Me, I Voted for Kodos

I do IT work for a public library system. We’re already closed to the public until at least the end of the month but some of us are still working. It just so happens that there is a ton of IT stuff that needs to be done which is more easily done without patrons. Some of it is hands-on and can’t be done remotely. The original plan had been to do it after hours, but that can become a pain in the ass quickly if something goes wrong. Now we get to do it at a more leisurely pace, which is nice. But without patron traffic, sooner or later the work is going to run out for my group and for the other behind-the-scenes people who will be working. There won’t really be much of anything that realistically needs to be done. I’m hearing that the people who are told not to come to work won’t be paid, although I can’t understand why** because when they close for inclement weather the people who stay home get paid.

** — it’s actually because the library administration and city managers are morons, but that’s impolite to point out.

Maybe wait a few days? In the stores today (I had to stop at a couple of places) they had some stock. I think the frenzy maybe dying down.

I’m hoping things will be better mid-week. I think the combination of Trump’s statements Wed. and Fri. which worried people, the realization that they’ll need to cook at home including that the kids will be there for lunch, and a weekend to go shopping combined for a real mess. UPDATE: All Panhandle schools announce closure to ‘flatten’ virus spread (goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, one hour ago)

All Panhandle schools will be closed throughout the next two weeks, according to information being released at Panhandle schools.

Schools in the ESU #12 areas are: Schools in the service area, according to its website, are: Alliance, Banner County, Bayard, Bridgeport, Chadron, Crawford, Creek Valley Schools (Crawford), Garden County, Gering, Gordon-Rushville, Hemingford, Kimball, Leyton, Minatare, Mitchell, Morrill, Potter-Dix, Scottsbluff, Sidney and Sioux County.

That ends the weird issue with half our town’s students going to school, since Leyton is now closed.

List of Known School Closures (Nebraska Department of Education)

It would appear from that list the overwhelming majority of schools will remain open in Nebraska. Panhandle Public Health District seems to be working hard to keep Covid-19 from spreading here.

Throughout the world, the most effective responses to the historic threat of the coronavirus have come from state governments. China imposed a lockdown of tens of millions of people in Wuhan and other cities. In Singapore, the government built an app to inform citizens how to contain the virus and what public spaces to avoid. South Korea opened a number of drive-through centers to accelerate diagnostic testing.

But in the United States, the pandemic has devolved into a kind of grotesque caricature of American federalism. The private sector has taken on quasi-state functions at a time when the executive branch of government—drained of scientific expertise, starved of moral vision—has taken on the qualities of a failed state. In a country where many individuals, companies, institutions, and local governments are making hard decisions for the good of the nation, the most important actor of them all—the Trump administration—has been a shambolic bonanza of incompetence

Gah.
Finally got to the end of a live thread after days of trailing one or three behind. Typed in a long and detailed summary of the current status from the Denver suburbs, only to have the computer chew it up and belch at me.

Cliff Notes version — restaurants and bars haven’t been ordered closed yet, but it’s very likely. CO gov has been fairly proactive and a whole lotta stuff is already shuttered. Bracing for what’s to come, worrying about what’s happening in the hills. (Glad to see you back, Teleskiguy! But so sorry your ski season just got iced.)

Will settle for the major local news: Toad Hall has acquired a feline overlord, after many years without. She is a14-year-old black long-hair called Mystique, or sometimes Mistake. We inherited her after our cousin’s death; picked her up last Sunday, rather worried about how she’d adapt at her age to a new home and strange humans. Can report that she’s settling in nicely — has already established her throne on the couch; is training my college boys how to rub her chin and ears to her satisfaction. Has my husband wrapped around her paw, likes to curl up next to him and watch TV. I am way out of practice at being a feline minion, but I’m sure it will come back to me. (Like the smell of a litterbox, you never really forget…)

Her presence will enliven the household while we’re housebound, certainly. A small fuzzy bright spot!

That is death rate for closed cases. What the death rate is for the general population is unclear.

It was early this morning that the large Italian death report bumped up that closed case death rate.

I don’t know how well the social distancing is working here in the US. We will know in about 7 days or so. An additional 7 days and we’ll get an idea of the death rate climb here in the US. So by the end of March we ought to have an idea of how this is going to play out.

fwiw…

A couple of years ago, the rule of thumb that I heard among preppers was 100 rolls of tp per person per year for prepping purposes. I was curious so I tracked that, among other things. As an older male I’m closer to half that.

(Obviously, there are a lot of factors involved. Including whether one uses tp for blowing one’s nose. Reportedly why tp usage goes up in the winter.)

This tells you why I was a Battalion S-4 while waiting for a battery command.

We now return to our regularly scheduled conversation…

Listened to Kayleigh Macaninny (sp? WTF cares) on radio on the way home. They’re walking the tightrope narrative: Democrats are making this a big deal to hurt Big Daddy, but we’re being very safe, but we’re having rallies because Trump is such a great leader and he’s in charge and it’s going to be all right. We’re really going to LRP evolution over the next several months.

Of course.

Also, the NFL, NBA, MLB, Disneyland and MGM Grand are all in on trying to hurt Big Daddy, gladly sacrificing several months of revenue just to make him look bad.

Bernie reminds me of the _very_ old joke:

A rabble rouser is standing on a soap box in the City park, surrounded by bemused passerby.

He waxes eloquently on “The Revolution”.

He goes on:
“Comes the Revolution, there’ll be a chicken in every pot!”
“Comes the Revolution, there’ll be a car in every garage!”
“Comes the Revolution, there’ll be strawberry shortcake for everyone!”

A heckler in back yells “But I don’t like strawberry shortcake!”

The rabble rouser stops, turns to the heckler, fixes a stare on him, points at him and says “Comes the Revolution, you’ll have strawberry shortcake. And like it!”.

What to do with those TP hoards later this year. You’ll thank me for this come Christmas. Some of my neighbors may be able to make whole RVs from their redundant toilet paper stashes or the great masses they may be able to pick up at garage sales.
How to Make Paper Clay

Paper clay is a cheap, handy sculpting material made from toilet paper, glue, and a few other hardware store supplies. It’s used in place of paper mache strips for a smoother, more realistic finish. Paper clay only takes about five minutes to make, and it air-dries into a hard, detailed surface you can paint.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We’re safe and working from home, but many folks can’t afford that luxury or don’t have a job that allows them to work from home because they’re in direct contact with the public - that includes all the folks working at supermarkets trying to keep shelves stocked, people doing deliveries of food, and restaurant workers who are preparing food, etc.

And then there’s EMTs, public health workers, law enforcement, and members of the military. All face risks that can’t be mitigated by social distancing or require contact with those who might be sick.

So, now we know servicemembers aboard one Navy ship has been diagnosed - and there will be more.

This is going to go from bad to worse, and Trump’s only care is to keep the market inflated. He’s perfectly fine if people die, hospitals collapse under the strain, and untold misery for millions.

While the CDC is recommending cancellations of events with 50 or more people, Trump will continue to ignore social distancing, lead from behind, and ignore the recommendations, because it would harm the markets - even though his inaction is what’s sending the markets in to a spiral and the recognition that doing nothing will cause major harms that could be mitigated with aggressive actions now (or weeks ago).

Malls remain open, although they’re adjusting hours to deal with additional cleaning.

We’re already seeing cases among those who work there. That’s a huge outlet mall in NJ, and one where folks come from all around the world to buy stuff.

Everyone seems to be scrambling from behind to get ahead of this, and Trump’s leading from behind because the last thing he wants is for the markets to go down because businesses do the responsible thing by closing to keep people safe. Don’t count on Trump to highlight the CDC recommendation gatherings of 50 or more people be cancelled for 2 months.

Of course the markets froze at the bell - and it wont stop it from dropping in 15 minutes time. The fundamentals are totally screwed at the moment thanks to Trump’s refusal to aggressively act to contain covid19. We can’t overcome his fuckups.

But it is weird - 49 of 50 states show cases in the JHU tracker. West Virginia doesn’t have a case. I think that’s entirely due to the lack of testing, not because there’s something unique about the state. If you don’t test, you don’t know who has it or who’s dying because of it. It’s what Trump was hoping for when he gambled and lost weeks ago.

Lol I’ve heard this same argument about “why not give everyone $1 million” before for decades now specifically from the ignorant ass Rush Limbaugh. It’s as if they have never taken a Calculus class in their lives, especially concerning Maximization of a desired outcome.

It’s as if they have never heard of Calculus before or they are specifically lying about it.

And ignorant of history as well. Spain’s silver bonanza in the their New World colonies pretty much destroyed their own economy.

re: #342 PhillyPretzel

That is old news. PBS/Nova already exposed that. There is even an episode called Dead Sea Scroll Detectives. Amazon has it so you can watch it. I have already seen it.

Actually, it’s not. It’s been generally suspected by archaeologists, historians and palaeographers that anything found after 2002 and called “part of a Dead Sea Scroll” is a fake. This is the first major examination of a significant set of these fragments, and the investigator got Museum of the Bible to say they would accept her findings.

Faking tiny fragments is *big business*. Paige Patterson, the former head of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (and ousted for being a complete and utter jerk to women and protecting rapists) prevailed upon a family to pony up what was said to be $500,000 to buy a particular fragment which:

One fragment sold to the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary conveniently refers to the biblical prohibition against homosexuality in the Book of Leviticus.

The problem is, experts suspect many of these sensational and pricy new fragments are expertly crafted fakes. For example, the fragment references passages in Leviticus 18 and 20 that contain the two strongest condemnations of homosexuality in the Bible. Such a strong coincidence is a flag of fakery.

“It is extremely unlikely that a small Dead Sea Scroll fragment would preserve text from both chapters” of Leviticus, says religion scholar Arstein Justnes, at University of Agder in Norway, who called the new fragments “amateurish” imitations that seem to have been copied from modern textbooks about the scrolls. “I think this fragment was produced for American evangelicals.”

Justnes is creating an international multidisciplinary research project called the Lying Pen of Scribes to bring together scientists and scholars to systematically analyze the flood of new fragments for authenticity. “There is a real danger that an increasing number of forgeries is accepted into the datasets on which we base our knowledge of the ancient world,” Justnes says. “There is an urgent need for the development of strategies and methods with which to counter this threat.”

newsweek.com

Justnes is one of the people who has been saying very loudly that anything that has been “found” since 2002 is a fake. And everyone (except honest scholars) benefits from this fakery. The forgers get rich and the Evangelicals trumpet their very tiny pieces of shoe leather (seriously!) that contain anti-gay sentiments. The fact that MOTB/Hobby Lobby is pretty much forced to accept this, well, yanno, I’m happy about it.

The 3 triggers are 7%, 13%, and 20%.
7% is a 15 minute suspension, unless it happens in last 35 minutes of the trading day.
13% is another 15 minute suspension, unless it happens in last 35 minutes of the trading day.

20% is closure for the day.

Trump going on at 3:30 to do a presser is all about market manipulation at this point, and it’s transparently so.

We’re going to have to prepare for the very real possibility of infection clusters surrounding churches, to wit (and this is not the Shincheonji people!):

Coronavirus: salt water spray infects 46 church-goers in South Korea
The church in Gyeonggi Province sprayed salt water into the mouths of its followers out of a belief it would kill the virus

A church in South Korea sprayed salt water inside the mouths of followers out of a false belief it would help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, but by using the same spray bottle without disinfecting the nozzle, it resulted in 46 church-goers infected, authorities said on Monday.

Video images from the River of Grace Community Church in Gyeonggi Province, south of Seoul, show a church official sticking the nozzle of a spray bottle deep into the mouth of one follower after another, during a prayer gathering attended by some 100 followers on March 1 and March 8. Those infected include the pastor and his wife.

“It’s been confirmed that they put the nozzle of the spray bottle inside the mouth of a follower who was later confirmed as a patient, before they did likewise for other followers as well, without disinfecting the sprayer,” said Lee Hee-young, head of Gyeonggi Province’s coronavirus task force.

“This made it inevitable for the virus to spread,” he said. “They did so out of the false belief that salt water kills the virus.”

The church was consequently closed and all its believers who attended the prayer sessions are being tested.

I don’t know how Biden will feel about putting someone whose highest position in government to this point has been minority leader in her state’s legislature. However, Stacey does have it going on in a few aspects I like, one is what you mention. One is she’s an excellent fundraiser, another is she’s very likable and relatable, and the other is she’s someone that definitely will excite people. I just don’t know if she’s ready. I love Senator Kaine but I think it was a misstep since I think he was IMO wrongly perceived as a boring white guy. He really isn’t but that label stuck.

Normally he would’ve been fine, but combined with Russian interference, heavy anti-Clinton media bias and the Comey letter, Trump drew an inside straight and squeaked to victory.

Cause and effect.

Meanwhile, NJ Gov. Murphy called on all restaurants in state to shut down and offer takeout/delivery only.

NY/NJ/CT all going with a shared restriction level. All will coordinate.

As a result, there will be no gatherings larger than 50 people, and all bars, restaurants gyms, movie theaters and casinos will close for good at 8 p.m.

Restaurants will continue to offer take-out and delivery and will also be provided a waiver for carry-out alcohol, and online gambling will continue in New Jersey.

“We have agreed to a set of rules, so don’t even think about going to a neighboring state because there is a different set of conditions,” Cuomo said. “I believe we are the only region in the country to do that.”

Cuomo’s presser is also discussing surge capacity for hospital beds.

Because Trump wont do the heavy lifting, it’s falling to the states to do it.

Make Nv a primary, and start with it and SC.

People keep saying stuff like this. They can’t just make it a primary, it isn’t a party decision. The state legislature has to vote to fund the primary. Now they don’t necessarily need to use the current caucus system, but running a primary is expensive and I don’t think most state parties can fund one on their own.

Cuomo:
158 of the 950 NY cases are hospitalized - that’s 17%. If 1 million NYers get infected (which is just a few weeks away based on doubling), 17% is 170,000. NY has a total of .. 53,000 beds (that’s all beds, including those for every specialty, including ICU, oncology, maternity, etc.). NY has 20 million residents. NYC has 8 million residents.

Public health experts are warning that expanded out to the expected population and you get how soon the hospitals can be overwhelmed.

That’s why bending the curve is so critical.

SO I just got back from the local food shelf. The line was outside the building an hour after it had opened, mainly due to the 6’ distance they were trying to enforce given that most of the volunteers are 70 ~ 80 years old. They are not sure if they’re going to remain open so they were giving like crazy. I ended up with - as a family of “one” - with a 1/2 dozen fresh eggs, 3 quarts frozen scrambled eggs, 5 lbs of hamburger, 3 frozen pizzas, canned goods galore, rice, beans, frozen green beans, and so on. I hope they do remain open - up here if people get told to stay home, food money will run out fast - but at least they’re doing everything they can. Even TP & paper towels :)

Area stores took a minor hit but are restocking normally. Mostly people are just waiting to see if it’s like 1918 when rural areas didn’t really get hit till the end and then got hammered hard.

Each of the cases comes from the Ústí nad Labem region, and were among the first batch of cases confirmed in the Czech Republic.

These cases displayed no symptoms of the disease in recent days, but only now their recovery was confirmed by two negative test results within two days, Regional Sanitary Authority head Lenka Šimůnková told Czech News Agency.

“As President Trump leads our country and takes unprecedented action in stopping the coronavirus, it is now clearer than ever that no leaders exist on the Democrat debate stage,” Parscale said in a statement. “Unable to articulate a coronavirus plan, both Bernie and Biden offered little more than plagiarizing President Trump’s response, which will now be the model for all future pandemics.”

Certain countries seem to have a much lower mortality rate from coronavirus (less than .5%). What are they doing right? (Assuming that their reports are honest). For example: Germany, Austria, Denmark, Canada, Israel, Finland?

Counting all victims is a lot of it, I think. But it’s also early days. I believe Covid-19 takes a while to kill the seriously afflicted.

The Court and the Plaza at King of Prussia is closed.
whyy.org

I was out along US-30 for a bit. About 50-75% of the normal traffic right before lunch time. Local diner is take-out only and only has 3 people staffing it. Post Office open (not surprised), but most of the rest of the shops in the little shopping center I think are closed - though the parking lot is 75% full rather than overflowing.

All of the people I saw going in and out of the post office or stores were *not* taking any precautions towards door handles. (I was using a paper towel in my hand to open them, and did the same with a different towel when signing for lunch at the diner.)

Will probably visit the grocery tomorrow. Will need a few things by then and hopefully there will have been a restock since the weekend.

To the extent that Gavin Newsom was talking yesterday about California’s “reserve capacity” of large, recently closed hospitals that can be reopened for coronavirus patients.

We know that DT is worse than no leadership at all, but I’ve been trying to calculate how much of the US (by population, not area) is now getting the right kind of advice and orders. Given that blue states are so much more populous than the red ones.

Given the shortage of equipment that the current hospitals are facing how do you suddenly find enough spare equipment (and staff expertise) to reopen and restock a closed hospital? I understand that it’s a building in place that is built/formatted for what you need, but there is more to the logistics than just the building itself.

Gov. Hogan is cracking down in MD.
patch.com

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Gov. Larry Hogan on Monday ordered closures he described as “unprecedented” to protect the safety of people in Maryland from the spread of the new coronavirus. These drastic actions, which he admitted would be disruptive, are “absolutely necessary to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans,” Hogan said.

The governor ordered the closure of bars, restaurants, movie theaters and gyms across the state, effective at 5 p.m. Monday. Drive-thru, carryout and food delivery service can continue at restaurants.

hi

A commentator at Wonkette who lives in New South Wales notes that state in Australia is now going up the rapid part of the curve, just like Italy did.

The government imposed rules against large gatherings, and imposed an AU$30,000 fine for breaking them.

Perhaps hitting people in the pocketbook here will cause our morans to reconsider.

In the meantime, the Nebraska Panhandle is not exactly locked down, but we have mandatory reporting to the Public Health District if we leave the Panhandle and return, along with the ability of PPHD to levy fines here. The objective is to try to keep the virus out, though I imagine it could already be here, considering there are cases in Wyoming, South Dakota, and Colorado.

The hospital tells me my podiatry appointment is on for this afternoon. The nurse I spoke to said some of the crush from flu cases has been relieved in the past few days, though I imagine if the virus takes root here that won’t last long.

Afterwards, my wife and I will hit a grocery store and we’ll see how much panic buying hit here after the incessant propaganda from our hard-right media here.

If someone needs toilet paper, let me know. I’ll mail it to you. /s
