Gov. Reynolds Announces Community Spread Of COVID-19 In Iowa

Gov. Kim Reynolds said Saturday night community spread of COVID-19 has occurred in Iowa.

The announcement came after a Dallas County resident tested positive for the disease caused by the new coronavirus, and the person wasn’t linked to a known risk factor such as travel to an affected area.

Earlier Saturday, the neighboring state of Nebraska also announced its first evidence of community spread with a new case in Omaha.

[…]

Now that SARS-Cov-2 is working its way through the entire society, the question in my mind is what will Americans do next.

Early data suggest the lethality is around 1%, pretty much all old people or those who are otherwise in poor health.

Perhaps the lethality will be shown, after millions are infected, to be lower. Or, perhaps, higher. We will find out.

Personally I doubt we can handle a “lockdown” like what happened in Hubei. There’s the current effort at social distancing, but as I wrote downstairs about my trips to the grocery store, most locals around here aren’t doing the most basic of tasks to avoid spreading when out in public.

This flu season has been rather mild compared to past years.

But most people don’t notice deaths from flu. That is why the conservaderp went early with the THE FLU!! approach to disinformation.

Pretty much I suspect most Americans will think all this social distancing was for nothing, once enough people die but they (the young and healthy survive.) Most don’t give a second thought to people in nursing homes, unless their parent/spouse happen to be in one.

So yesterday the WaPo map page listed 2200 US cases. Today it lists 2700. 20% increase per day is not a trend that is our friend.

That’s doubling every 4 days. (Okay, fractionally less.) That’s every US inhabitant infected in approximately 2 months.

The good news and the bad news is that there isn’t sufficient testing, unless apparently you’re a Rethuglican bigwig or a major sports franchise. It’s “good news” in that the growth curve is really as much an artifact of testing ramping up as any true spread. The bad news is the inference that we’re only measuring the tip of the iceberg on actual spread.

In my personal life, I suspect that we’re going to get told to work from home in a week. It’s one of those things for which there simply is no good timing. If you do it when you see local community spread, then it’s too damned late. But I know the bosses, and until they see a “measurable” number of cases in the county then they’re not going to believe in it. They refuse to believe anything else we tell them, anyway.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Mar 14, 2020 • 7:54:18pm

This season, flu deaths peaked in week four at 446. That are deaths reported to the CDC - the actual number will be higher and estimated numbers will be available much later.

Flu deaths this week are probably substantially lower than that maximum week.

But, as the conservaderp strategy illustrated, most people don’t give a thought to these statistics. Most people have no real problem if they contract the flu, just a few days of misery.

Until the hospitals are full and ambulances are turned away, not sure people are going to really notice the problem of everyone getting infected at once.

stpaulbear  Mar 14, 2020 • 7:54:55pm

Yay. / I just got a public hearing notice from the city of St. Paul to approve the assessment for the public sewer rebuild that needed to be done from my house to the city’s main sewer line last September. I have to pay for it, to the tune of about $18,000. The way it works in St. Paul is that I hired an approved sewer contractor, the city approves of the contractor, the contractor does the work and submits the bill to the city, and the city (eventually) adds it to my property tax bill. If I don’t pay it all at once, they spread it out over 20 years of payments at 4.25% interest. I’ll have to call them to find out if I need to present myself at the city council meeting and how I need to prep. There’s nothing I see in the notice that I need to dispute so I don’t see the need for a lawyer (famous last words).

There are going to be a lot of extremely yelly conversations about people’s refusal to react to this responsibly.

In an email from AMC theaters:

To give you more empty space around you within our theatres, we are capping ticket availability to 50% of the normal seating capacity for every showtime in every auditorium at all AMC theatres nationwide. Once we hit 50% of an auditorium’s capacity, movie screenings will show as being Sold Out, even though by definition there will be a large number of unfilled seats. This will begin Saturday, March 14, and for now, will continue until April 30.

• For those AMC auditoriums with more than 500 seats, we will further reduce bookings to a maximum of 250 people in any case.

• And, it goes without saying that AMC is actively complying with all current and future federal, state and local authorities’ directives on social gathering.

re: #2 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Although the cases in Nebraska remain confined to the eastern part of the state, I can’t imagine it staying there.

Although we appear to be in one of the biggest areas of the country with no infections noted, that’s going to change. Hospitals here in the Panhandle are already slammed with influenza cases. We’re about to be fuqued with a rusty unsharpened cactus.

A non-comment from Wonkette (anecdotal and third-hand to me, so take it as you will):

brother, who is a Dr in MN emailed me today:
“we just learned there will not be enough ventilators when the bulk of the virus hits. So we will need to ration them. And probably people over age 85 will not be able to access them. The age limit will continue to go down as the ventilators are used up.
Fortunately most people don’t need ventilators but in Italy they ran out. And the disease attacks the lungs primarily, causing a disease called ARDS, adult respiratory distress syndrome, where the alveoli in the lungs weaken and leak filling up the lungs with water. It’s not unusual to get ARDS with major trauma or bad pneumonia’s.
So Social Distancing is the name of the game, avoid the disease.
Another worrisome thing we learned was that young people will get the disease, breeze through it and do well but will continue to shed the virus for a long time afterwards while not having any symptoms. That is truly spooky.
Again, Social Distancing!”

That’s actually not 100% accurate. There are closer legal dispensaries than the ones in western Massachusetts, but they’re on the other side of the Canadian border and I’m not going to risk crossing the border with cannabis. I’d rather drive the two extra hours within the US.

An example of how money can help you when you’re sick:

Matthew Broderick Says Sister Janet Is on ‘Road to Full Recovery’ After Coronavirus Diagnosis

Matthew Broderick is speaking out after news of his sister, Janet Broderick, testing positive for coronavirus.

In a statement to PEOPLE, the actor, 57, says his 64-year-old sibling is recovering in Beverly Hills, California, where she was hospitalized.

“My entire family is grateful for the concern about, and the well wishes for, my sister Janet. I’m happy to say she is feeling much better and is on the road to a full recovery,” Matthew says. “We are all very appreciative for the wonderful care she received from the amazing doctors and nurses at Cedars-Sinai.”

His sister Janet fell ill after attending the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes conference in Louisville, Kentucky, where another attendee was diagnosed with the virus, according to a statement from her parish, All Saints Episcopal Church, last Wednesday.

She is receiving the best medical care available and her doctors’ prognosis is for a complete and full recovery,” the church said. “It will take some time, but Janet is resting comfortably at Cedars until the time she is released and can return home to complete her recovery.”

Janet, who is a former rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown, New Jersey, was moved to the ICU and placed under isolation before her test results confirmed her positive coronavirus diagnosis.

It’s all fine to talk about the numbers “recovered” when the sick have the money for the best medical care and there are ICU beds available.

But what happens to the rest of the world, who don’t have such wealth?

The number of cases in the UK is exploding. The choice by Boris to go for the “herd immunity” route - against what most experts in the world recommend - is yet another Brexity thing to do. Thinking good ol’ England is special somehow.

I wonder how long it will last? I suspect that when the daily death count reaches three digits there will be a lot of pressure to do a complete lockdown.

Philippines closes off capital for the next month as number of coronavirus infections doubles

Police began closing off access to the Philippines’ sprawling and densely populated capital of Manila on Sunday, imposing a quarantine that officials hope will curb the nation’s rising number of coronavirus cases.

Officers armed with rifles blocked off main roads into the city of some 12 million as domestic flights to and from Manila were halted early Sunday for a monthlong isolation of the capital.

Mass gatherings and school at all levels have also been called off, but delays and exceptions have led public health experts to question how effective President Rodrigo Duterte’s measures will be.

Though the Philippines has detected a fraction of the infections seen in hot spots like China or Italy, its confirmed cases nearly doubled in recent days to 111, with eight deaths.

Duterte is a malicious strongman. But he learned from the Chinese about what to do, ignoring the Republicans in this country.

Yep, that’s the damn thing, isn’t it? It’s not just about you (the general you) and whether you get sick, or whether you’re at low risk. It’s about whether you might become the carrier that brings it to someone who does have an adverse reaction. It’s about limiting the spread of seemingly healthy people becoming the vehicle that infects countless others.

There is no fucking immunity to a novel virus, much less “herd immunity”!

You get herd immunity without a vaccine once the overwhelming majority of the populace has caught the virus.

In other words, Boris and his Conservative Party are quite fine with killing off 1-3.5% of the UK population to retain power.

Conservatism kills.

I posted a few of the pics on facebook with the following comment:

I went to walmart this evening. Lot’s of empty shelves in food, like the lunchmeat section below. Panic buying that will most likely result in food being thrown away.
As you’ve seen in my posts, I’m all for taking this virus very seriously. But seriously also means being realistic about what it means for you and those around you. And this hoarding will just make things harder. Buy what you need. When you need more, go out and get it. Take proper precautions when you do, and we’ll get through this.

Reading that Newt editorial, it’s both innumerate and asinine Republican boosterism. The title is… not wholly inappropriate, but his BIG action is all about economics. “Not just stimulus”, but really big economic changes. Which he neglects to detail what that should be but inevitably is more big-biz welfare and tax cuts for the rich.

And his vision of catostrophic, Italy-like outcomes is 5-10k dead in the US, as if the dying in Italy is all done already.

Absolutely disgusting.

I wonder how long it will last? I suspect that when the daily death count reaches three digits there will be a lot of pressure to do a complete lockdown.

It’s looking increasingly like what the Brits are gonna do is, instead of a full 100% lockdown of everybody, they’re gonna lockdown the elderly and the at-risk for four months.

Yup. They’re going for the “herd immunity” for the under 65’s in the hopes that most will be infected soon and recover.

Here’s the problem: You can’t really isolate all those 65+ immune compromised from the rest of society. There will be interactions. Furthermore, each replication of the virus is an opportunity for more mutations. So willingly infecting say 40 million people means creating 40 million machines producing mutated viruses. And there is reason to be afraid that even under 65s can suffer damage, such as to lung capacity.

Note the UK is sort of going alone here, other than than he-men of Russia who seem to believe that the Orthodox Church is immune to these sorts of things.

We’ll know soon enough if the UK’s approach works. Like, less than 14 days.

Most of my coworkers would rather work from home so I told one of the supervisors that if they all stayed home I wouldn’t mind coming in to the office. I find it really difficult to work from home. If the supervisors look at age, I’m going to be sent home for sure. I’m 65, probably 10 years older than my next-oldest coworkers, I was planning on retiring in July but I may consider retiring in April and finding some way to make up the lost income when this plague is over.

Note the UK is sort of going alone here, other than than he-men of Russia who seem to believe that the Orthodox Church is immune to these sorts of things.

We’ll know soon enough if the UK’s approach works. Like, less than 14 days.

I read the entire article you’re referencing, and there are actually measures being taken to stop the spread In Russia (about as ineffectual as the ones at our federal level, and apparently varying in different regions). The “he-man” is one orthodox priest. Unfortunately, he’s in charge of a major church, and his parishioners, it seems, believe in him.

Not to sound all tin-foil hat here, but maybe this is BoJo’s plan to get rid of those pesky pensioners.

Many would point out, “But they vote Tory almost en bloc” and that’s true. But in typical high Tory master race thinking, the counterpoint would be, “Eh, they’ve done their duty and now it’s time for them to go. And besides, think of the billions we’ll save!”

Mitchell & Webb explained it pretty well…..just replace “the poor” with “retirees”.

Here it comes.

Panhandle Public Health District has issued new screening guidelines for residents who have traveled outside the Panhandle.

Outside the Panhandle? Trapped in a 14,000 square mile area with 87,000 people.

Nebraska’s 11th presumptive positive case was reported by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday, March 12. The agency stated it is a Cass County man, who had been on a connecting flight with the person who was Nebraska’s first confirmed case.

By Friday, March 13, two more cases had been confirmed in Douglas County, in eastern Nebraska.

Event cancellations and school closures have occurred throughout the state, including in western Nebraska. According to PPHD, the postponements, cancellations and closures are meant to prevent spread and avoid overwhelming hospitals and clinics.

I went back to that NYT story this morning about the guy who has 17,000 bottles of hand sanitizer in his garage. Amazon cancelled his account after he tried to price gouge the resale. The Times gives the guy all the time in the world to state what a good guy he is.

The comments are broken down by “NYT Picks” and “Reader’s Picks”. All of the top NYT picks support the guy for what he’s done. All of the top “Reader’s Picks” are calling him a criminal and telling him to donate the stuff to hospitals and seniors. Of course, I was with the readers. I was floored by how badly the Times felt the need to justify their story.

Sigh. I really don’t know what to do about my dad’s funeral on the 21st. IL has as of now banned gatherings of 250+ people. No way there will be that many in attendance at the church. My brother is flying up here to Chicago from Austin this evening (Sunday) and his wife and two kids (20/23) booked their flight for the 20th. I’m just telling them to see how things go this upcoming week. They’d all be staying at the house with my 77 year old mother. I suspect they’ll cancel their flight because they wouldn’t want to risk getting grandma sick, and also there’d be a concern of getting back home 3 days later if there’s a domestic travel ban, which I think is likely. Sounds like a nightmare scenario.

Lots of elderly people would be attending the service. I just don’t think it’d be a good idea at this point. :(

As much as it would hurt my mom, it might be best in the end to cancel the service all together.

What if, in 12 or 18 months, scientists announce that there is no vaccine for COVID-19, that no matter what they’ve tried, it’s impossible.

Then what?

I know, because I’ve heard it from others, “But we just have to hope!” Hope is not a solution to a problem.

No society will tolerate being held in indefinite quarantine. Sooner or later, people are gonna say, “Fuck it, let the chips fall where they may. We’ll mourn the dead and get on with our lives.”

The number of pneumonia cases in #Moscow went up 37% yoy which is seemingly an indirect confirmation #Russia’s Covid-19 problem is much more serious than the government admits.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there’s a massive outbreak of COVID-19 in Moscow, and probably other large Russian cities as well, and the Kremlin is taking every possible step to suppress any and all information about it.

It only took two days to go rom145k to 162k reported cases.

We’re now entering the steep part of the exponential curve.

I don’t know where it will flatten off, because I don’t know how the social distancing strategy of most countries will work.

I also don’t know how bad it will be as far as deaths.

It took only three days to go from under 5k deaths to now over 6k deaths. I guess when we get to 1k deaths/day that will be some sort of grim milestone. Probably in less than a week we’ll be there, globally.

This is clearly the fastest moving epidemic of my lifetime. AIDS was devastating but slower moving and transmission could be reasonably controlled. Back when I was a kid there was a Rubella outbreak, but there were vaccines and I had one. Other epidemics since WWII have been more localized (MERS, SARS, Ebola, etc.)

All we can do is hang on and ride this one out.

My evil too big to fail employer sent out a very detailed email on Friday night spelling out various situations and what we’re to do in them. As a manager and someone who can work at home, not all of this applied to me. It should surprise nobody that ETBTF employer is more proactive than the Trump administration.

Basically, the situations went from “you’ve tested positive for coronavirus” through “you think you’ve been exposed [obviously for those who can’t get a test because there aren’t any to be had],” “you’ve been in contact with someone who tested positive,” “you have children whose school or daycare has closed” to the one that applies to me: “you’re in a high-risk group as defined by the CDC.” Basically, my group has been told to stay out of the office. That’s what I’ve been waiting for.

To my evil too big to fail employer’s credit, the seven days of personal PTO you have to use up before going on short-term disability has been waived if you test positive for COVID-19, have been exposed or are in a high risk group.. If I couldn’t work at home (which I can, and plan on doing, I feel FINE), I could be paid for this “Nonroutine Event > Public Health/Quarantine” for 14 days. People can get paid for five days while looking for childcare. This last is pretty important as the Los Angeles Unified School District is shutting down and the ETBTF employer has a lot of employees in LA.

Again, it’s pretty shameful that an amoral business has to step up and do right by its employees because we have no social safety net. I am concerned for people in the “gig economy” or who are working a couple of jobs to make ends mee.

Fauci: Worst-case coronavirus predictions ‘unlikely if we do the kinds of things that we’re essentially outlining right now’

Anthony Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Sunday that the steps the U.S. is taking to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus will likely mean the worst-case estimates for the number of deaths don’t materialize.

ABC’s Jonathan Karl asked Fauci on “This Week” about the New York Times report on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) worst-case projections. The CDC reportedly predicted 160 million to 214 million infections, 2.4 million to 21 million hospitalizations and 200,000 to 1.7 million deaths in the country.

Fauci responded that a model is “only as good as the assumptions you put into a model.”

“The worst-case scenario is either you do nothing or your mitigation and containments don’t succeed,” he said “So although that’s possible, it is unlikely if we do the kinds of things that we’re essentially outlining right now.”

[…]

That’s a very big “if”.

this is an absolutely outstanding article on covid-19

easy to read, lots of data. no spin.

politically speaking the takeaway is official vs true cases:

Crucially, these true cases weren’t known at the time. We can only figure them out looking backwards: The authorities don’t know that somebody just started having symptoms. They know when somebody goes to the doctor and gets diagnosed*.

What this means is that the orange bars [graph] show you what authorities knew, and the grey ones what was really happening.

*diagnosed and / or merely tested.
no tests, no numbers; it’s a hoax, no big deal, etc

Things are moving so quickly that the graphs/data in that article are in many cases now out of date. For example, cases outside of China have now surpassed the number of cases in China.

We are now on the steep side of the infection curve. Any number you see that are counts are already out of date by the time you see them. At best, if you want real time numbers you’re going to have to go with simulations that extrapolate from the latest counts.

Due to South Korea’s more thorough testing, their data is less likely than any other nations’ to be seriously undercounting the # of cases of Covid-19, according to a study I read less than a week ago (but can’t find right now).

Of course I’m aware that that’s one possibility (I’m the one who kept harping on the Diamond Princess numbers after all), but it’s not safe to conclude anything this early. Still, it’s cause for hope.

Some government agencies are doing the right thing; at least mine, the US FDA is (they can’t require until Sec. of HHS declares it) suggesting (telling us; even the upper manglement team) we work from home. The prohibition on home child care while working from home has been waived; all internal and external meetings are moved to WebEx; our building remains open four the time being if you really need to do something there, but why?

The “official stance” still coming from the orange shit-goblin is that is everything as normal, though.

A week ago I mentioned that my bookie had Trump as a -200 (66%) favorite over any Democrat. The “Any Democrat” was +170 (37%). That $30 difference in between the two numbers should make it more than obvious why the bookmakers never lose in the long run. Anyway, last night I logged on to the bookie’s app, and Trump is now -140 (58%) and the Democrat is even money (50%). I still maintain that there is no way that Trump is that big of a favorite, but unfortunately all the value on betting the Democrat has been squeezed out.

South Asia - I wonder how they are going to cope:

Patient with coronavirus-like symptoms flees from hospital

Shahjahan (40), who returned from Bahrain, was admitted to the hospital’s medicine ward around 8:00am today.

He has been suffering from fever, cough, sneezing and breathing difficulties, the hospital’s Director Uttam Kumar Barua told The Daily Star.

After examining his health condition, doctors suspected that it might be a case of coronavirus, so they called for a team from Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), the director said.

When the IEDCR team reached the hospital around 12:30pm and went to the medicine ward, doctors did not find him and his wife, he added.

Uma Rani Saha, a nurse at the hospital, told The Daily Star that the patient was very nervous when he heard that he might be infected with coronavirus.

For those unfamiliar with it, Folding@Home is a long-running, volunteer-based distributed computing project for disease and biomedical research. Users basically “donate” their computer’s idle time, letting the program run as a screensaver and put the hardware to use analyzing protein folding, computational drug design, and other types of molecular dynamics.

In the past few days, they’ve added and prioritized COVID-related projects.

Thanks to Nvidia and one of Reddit’s large PC subs, it’s now going, appropriately, viral.

I’ve been contributing to them for a very long time (admittedly less in recent years after a previous bugged version couldn’t run on my PC); it’s good to be able to do something to help with the efforts against COVID-19, however minimal.

re: #6 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

This season, flu deaths peaked in week four at 446. That are deaths reported to the CDC - the actual number will be higher and estimated numbers will be available much later.

Flu deaths this week are probably substantially lower than that maximum week.

But, as the conservaderp strategy illustrated, most people don’t give a thought to these statistics. Most people have no real problem if they contract the flu, just a few days of misery.

Until the hospitals are full and ambulances are turned away, not sure people are going to really notice the problem of everyone getting infected at once.

Gov Cuomo is calling on Trump to mobilize the military to help build MASH units to help with potential overflow from hospitals.

China built temporary hospitals to deal with the overflow in China, and even then the hospitals were overburdened.

There’s an average of 2.4 beds per 1000 people nationwide. But that’s not an even distribution. NJ has 2.4. NY has 2.7.

Washington has 1.7 - and that begins to give a sense of how many ICU beds are also available (or the max that could be converted to ICU). If NY is warning on beds, you can be damned sure there are places that are in far worse shape.

Iran didn’t build mobile hospitals. They instead have mass graves to deal with the death toll. The death toll there (and China for that matter) is probably higher than they’re willing to admit.

Trump continues dragging his feet over all this. He refuses to practice social distancing at his pressers and conferences, and cares more about misinforming the masses and contradicting his public health experts than following their advice. He puts Jared into a key role on the covid19 response, but when people point out why he’s at a conference call with public health experts, Trumpworld crops him out of photos to reduce the chances people see this.

Trump’s failures are manifest, including declaring travel bans and not having resources available to screen passengers. Instead of screening on the outbound side, he funnels everyone into massive lines on the inbound side where no one can avoid close contact with everyone else - guaranteeing the spread. Trump’s failures include refusing to coordinate with foreign leaders, ignoring the spread domestically, downplaying the severity of the crisis, and focusing on how to get relief to his backers and oil companies instead of taking action on public health now.

Tonight we have a debate between presumptive nominee Biden and Bernie. They should put out a joint statement indicating that they will not shake hands out of a social distancing public health measure because that’s what people should be doing during this pandemic in direct contrast to Trumpworld ignoring all those protocols.

This needs to be about Trump and his failures to act, and yet the media still treats Trump statements as something newsworth without indicating all the lies up front and directly.

re: #293 Backwoods_Sleuth

Pressers where no one practices safe public health measures. No social distancing. Trump shaking hands with everyone. No one countering Trump’s lies.

Trump instead focuses on the economic indicators, even though you can’t stop a pandemic with tax cuts (and Grover Norquist was droning on about that latter bit earlier today too). When every problem the right wing encounters is treated with a tax cut, you know how fact-free the GOP truly is.

A new survey from the Pew Research Center shows that U.S. evangelicals are far more likely than other Americans to see President Trump as “honest” and “morally upstanding” and “somewhat religious.”

Which I’m sure has nothing to do with the fact that US evangelical culture have deliberately cloistered their media access. They don’t watch mainstream movies or television, they don’t read mainstream novels or newspapers or science, they don’t listen to mainstream music, they don’t attend public schools (K-12 or universities).

Ex-evangelicals, again and again and again, tell us how astonished they are to eventually find out discover what people outside their subculture are like, what science has published, what politicians have said or done.

From mistermix over at balloon juice:

Yesterday, things got real around my home town, Rochester, NY, when the news broke that the second diagnosed COVID-19 case was a 60 year-old woman who worked in the Greece, NY public schools. She was exposed at services at a Ukranian Catholic Church in another suburb on March 1, and worked a couple of days with symptoms before testing. Prior to her diagnosis, the only confirmed case in Rochester was a man who had traveled to Italy. So, in one fell swoop, we learned that we had community spread, that the virus had been in our community for weeks, and that it makes no sense to keep schools open. There had been a debate on Thursday and Friday over whether the schools should be closed. By 2:30 yesterday, that debate was over, and the schools all closed. Our County Executive, a Democrat (thank you baby Jesus), declared a state of emergency yesterday.

UC Berkeley has its first confirmed case, someone who doesn’t live in the city of Berkeley and is deemed not to have changed anything about policies already in place — remote classes where possible, working remotely where possible, social distancing. The dorms remain open, as do the venues that feed students.

Right wingers are already spewing nonsense about how Ganz is now pushing the Palestinian view and will destroy Israel, all while ignoring the chaos Bibi and his corruption have already caused.

Ganz will be forming the first non-Bibi govt in 11+ years.

With all this going on, Bibi has been seemingly competent on covid19 response, doing aggressive testing, and even involving Palestinians in that effort.

Yeah, seemingly competent seems an accurate description. A lot of good policies were put in place, but also some far reaching ones that created a panic in the past couple of days, primarily fears of service and food/product shortages.

And he was already more than happy to use it to his personal advantage, with emergency regulations being passed LITERALLY in the middle of the night this Sunday, at 2AM. These included, among other things, emergency functionality of the Israeli courts, which resulted in - happy coincidence - the delaying of his criminal trial from this Tuesday to the first week of May.
Also being considered: granting the police and Shabak security service permission to use far-reaching tech surveillance (including monitoring cellphone tracking and social media surveillance) to know the whereabouts of COVID patients and people who they may have been in contact with, at all times.

I’m doing what I can by staying away from people except for grocery shopping and the like. (Also saw my brother and sister-in-law the other evening. Non essential, but pretty low risk.)
I’m hoping that there will be some way to help out all the service/gig workers when the dust settles a bit. Thing is, I rarely do things in my everyday life that feeds into that economy. We rarely eat out (Mr. C is celiac,) I don’t need ride-shares, I don’t get my nails done, etc., etc. Really, the government doing something and paying through our taxes is the only practical way to do that. I realize the Feds are unlikely to do much, but maybe California will step up?

NYC metro area debate - to close or not close schools.

There’s the concern about the disruption to education systems. There’s the concern about community spread, and what to do with the kids that are home (they go to the playgrounds where they mix and mingle anyways). And who cares for those kids especially for those parent(s) who have to work? Grandparents who are most at risk?

There are no good answers here, and shutdowns are likely inevitable. All the efforts to bend the curve are coming at the state and local level, and Trump’s busy suggesting everything is fine if you do business as usual.

But the thing about school closures is this - it is a value signal that things aren’t normal and wont be for a while to come. It gets people recognizing the danger and to take action in ways that other efforts aren’t.

Trump isn’t leading on any of this. He’s only listening to the worms in his brainpan.

Secondly, a 12 gauge pump shotgun is a far better choice for sane people who feel the need to be armed. And he’ll see no consequences whatsoever because the media is stuck in the mindset that they absolutely have to launder his statements and normalize him and Republicans. No matter what, nothing can ever be the Republicans fault. Even when they are at fault, they’re not at fault. Either ‘things happen’, ‘everyone is to blame’, or ‘Dems forced them’.

BernieBros on suicide watch.

Berniebros represent a nihilistic segment of the ‘left’ that actually agrees with the core principle of the fascist right, indeed arguably their only principle - that ordinary liberals and progressive are evil and must be destroyed. You see it in people like Michael Tracey, Jill Stein, and the like; they may have some mild disagreements with Republicans and other fascists, akin to small doctrinal differences, but they reserve their most passionate hatred for ordinary Democrats.

The old idea that the political spectrum isn’t a straight line left to right, but more like a horseshoe, where the two extremes might have different underlying ideologies but the day to day life for most people is life in a totalitarian regime

They don’t care about either of them. That is to prepare for November. One of the statements by the Arizona AG in that article was to the County Board supervisor that he’d better not try to do what he was doing - sending ballots out so everyone can vote by a drop-off ballot rather than just those who registered to vote early - in November either.

Disagree. Republicans want Trump to face off against Bernie. They’ll mop the floor with that old fart with a bad heart!

I keep on hearing about how Bernie is a democratic socialist. His reactions to the results thus far make me think he’s not the former. I’ve defended him on it in the past but I’m almost as disgusted by Bernie and his cronies as I am by Trump and his cronies.

Now why would Trump want to do that? Hmmmm, let us count the ways.

1. He or someone(s) in his administration have some form of stock in CureVac and know that it would see a massive stock increase if they were able to secure the future vaccine in the United States only.

2. He wants to punish Europe.

3. It will help him politically.

I say all of the above and probably more.

Reminder: the way Harry Truman got famous enough to be the replacement running mate for FDR’s 4th term… is by chairing the Truman Commission (aka the Profiteering committee) holding hearings and either fining or imprisoning those who saw wartime shortages as an opportunity for excess price hikes and personal gain.

The only time the executive branch interfered with his committee was

history.com

In the process of investigating war-production expenditures, Truman stumbled upon a suspicious plant in the state of Washington and asked the plant managers to testify in front of the committee. Unbeknownst to Truman, this particular plant was secretly connected with a program to develop an atomic bomb—“the Manhattan Project.” When Stimson, one of a handful of people who knew about the highly classified Manhattan Project, heard about Truman’s line of questioning, he immediately acted to prevent the Missouri senator from blowing the biggest military secret in world history.

On June 17, Truman received a phone call from Stimson, who told him that the Pasco plant was “part of a very important secret development.” Fortunately, Stimson did not need to explain further: Truman, a veteran and a patriot, understood immediately that he was treading on dangerous ground. Before Stimson could continue, Truman assured the secretary “you won t have to say another word to me. Whenever you say that [something is highly secret] to me that’s all I want to hear. If [the plant] is for a specific purpose and you think it’s all right, that’s all I need to know.” Stimson replied that the purpose was not only secret, but “unique.”

There’s no precise screening.

The problem with waiting for everyone coming in to get screened first means everyone on board is getting exposed while waiting to get screened. Screening is maybe a temp check.

It’s a total shitshow.

The church across the street from me (Lutheran) took the information I pasted to the trap line seriously. Last night they cancelled services this morning.

The Methodist church (will probably go with the liberal side when the split comes) up the street from me and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran church down the street (WELS is so conservative they think the antichrist is the pope) both had services today. Idiots.
