A mixture of gullibility and cynicism had been an outstanding characteristic of mob mentality before it became an everyday phenomenon of masses. In an ever-changing, incomprehensible, world the masses had reached the point where they would, at the same time, believe everything and nothing, think that everything is possible and that nothing was true. The mixture in itself was remarkable enough, because it spelled the end of the illusion that gullibility was a weakness of unsuspecting primitive souls and cynicism the vice of superior and refined minds. Mass propaganda discovered that its audience was ready at all times to believe the worst, no matter how absurd, and did not particularly object to being deceived because it held every statement to be a lie anyhow. The totalitarian mass leaders based their propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness.

The “shy Trump voter” talk is pundits jumping at their own shadows again. A “study” using online polls says that Repubs and Indies are slightly more likely to lie about who they actually support and pundits are using that to justify their fear that they’re misinterpreting the tea leaves again. Apparently 2016 was such a scarring event for them, spending the election playing up Trump in the belief that he couldn’t win only to watch him do so, that they’re now trying to hedge their bets that he’ll pull off another “win.”

Yes and no. Barr is using the filing and thus the need to review and rule upon such as a means of further delaying the case, but he ultimately wants to put the kibosh on the whole thing by abusing the fuck out of the Westfall Act. The plan is to sub the US in for Donny on the case, then almost immediately file for dismissal on the grounds that the federal gov’t cannot be sued for slander.
And even if the court should bring the gavel down on his head and tell him to fuck off, he’s likely to file with SCOTUS to put a hold on the case while they decide whether or not to grant a writ of mandamus. That’s means more time spent arguing in front of judges, more time waiting for decisions, and more time on the consequences of those decisions. Ultimately he’s not likely to prevail, but even in failure he’ll be eating up time on the clock.

Cool!
Your mention of your colleague who had been harassed by him got me thinking about all the folks I knew, who I did not realize were carrying invisible injuries. There is certainly a lot of pain out there. And there is so little that we can do to help heal that.
Additionally, I have seen quite a few internet posts mentioning violence over the past 3 decades. Including a few that have gotten out of hand and drifted into real life. So, even though you seem a sane and decent guy, I do tend to get a bit concerned about these things.
I also know of a guy who killed someone in rural Virginia. He was a lawyer and the dead guy was acknowledged a-hole. The lawyer obviously had anger management issues. He got out of the legal sanctions. But he was trashed in his community and ended up having to leave Virginia for North Carolina. Last I heard, he had moved to yet another state after some run-ins in North Carolina. And as a small businessman/self employed lawyer, he never was able to get back on his feet career wise again.

I get where you are coming from. That said, my limits are pretty much purely legal. I have lived a poor man’s life when I wasn’t in the military, so I could deal with just about anything else life could throw at me.
If life comes to a place where justice was only going to happen because of my hand, I could live with that (either in prison or on the run) quite easily. If one accepts the role of a knight errant in their society, then one accepts that sooner of later the consequences will catch up with you. There is an excellent old Chinese poem that deals with it:
For ten years I have been polishing this sword;
Its frosty edge has never been put to the test.
Now I am holding it and showing it to you, sir:
Is there anyone suffering from injustice ?
