In Which Trump Sues to Exclude Pennsylvania From the Election

Politics • Views: 24,007

The court systems of several states are currently under assault from a deluge of incredibly silly lawsuits brought by the Trump campaign’s crack(ed) legal team, and this has to be the boldest one yet, because they’re asking to have Pennsylvania basically excluded from the election entirely, for… reasons.

I’ve pretty much come to the conclusion that parody should be abandoned. It intrinsically signal boosts that which is being parodied, and that’s just too dangerous when the electorate has such a high fraction of idiots in it.

E.g., Swift’s A Modest Proposal wouldn’t shame Republicans. They would just put it in their platform (if they still had one) and use it to fundraise from the deplorables.

It always needs to be delivered with the first and most important goal being that the making a joke for understand you are really on their side. If the people who you are mocking think you support them that is awesome, but it has to be secondary.

I’m wary because the fact they’re doing this with stupid arguments doesn’t matter, since the bet isn’t on the strength of their reasoning, it’s on their capture of enough part of the judiciary, legislatures, and the media to just make thing they want be true.

…which they’ve done before with stuff like the Iraq War and ACORN defunding. Honestly, the pundit chortling about how they’re dumb is kind of jarring, because they’re dumbly trying to do a treason having pulled similar stunts before successfully.

It looks like Indigenous tribes in Wisconsin provided the margin for Biden there. As Charlie Pierce says, “These are people with every reason in the world not to have any faith at all, and they turned out to vote for a new president and, in local races, to elect more of their own. There’s something very John Lewis about all this.”

Wisconsin, a closely watched swing state, went narrowly for Biden by fewer than 21,000 votes as of Friday morning. There, the Indigenous population is 90,189 people as of 2018. Wisconsin counties overlapping the lands of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the Menominee Tribe and the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans show that voters there helped tip the count to a Democratic majority. Menominee County, which overlaps the Menominee Tribe’s reservation, voted for Biden 82%, compared to the state as a whole at 49.4%.

Numbers in for the Panhandle.

Deaths: 17 (+1, Dawes County, seat Chadron)
Risk moved to “Severe” (stand by for shutdowns)
Total cases: 3,645 (+48), tripled since October 14
Most by age: 20-29
November 6 revised upwards to +258
Weekly positivity rate: 60.9% (down about two points)

Every city and village along US-26 from my county seat to the Wyoming line has been moved to “severe” along with Alliance, Chadron, and Kimball.

Amazingly, my village, Lisco, and Llewellyn still have had no cases.

Panhandle Public Health District Dashboard

Active hospitalisations: 78, ICU beds available 21%, total beds available 38%

So if they throw out Pennsylvania’s votes does that include throwing out ALL of the votes for ALL of the offices on the ballot?

If they get that far I half-expect that the judges who decide it will somehow pretzel twist things enough to just throw out the Presidential election results.

Making one state hold a totally fresh election would be unprecedented. And I have my doubts they can set it up in time* before they have to submit electors to the EC. Which could well be the plan since if you trash the election itself the fallback will be the state legislature selecting the slate of electors. (And I will not hold my breath expecting them to have the integrity to submit the slate that the vote would have sent there.)

* - And a snap election like that would guarantee enough screw-ups in the set up that if the “result” didn’t go Trump’s way there would be tons of lawsuit fodder to challenge that result as well.

Who knew that making Pocahontas into a punch line pisses indigenous people off? And I’m seeing the poetry here too. Georgia, the difference looks to be in Lewis’s old district. Pennsylvania in the city where the road to nationhood and independence began. Damn it, now I know why Biden who I know is a reader of history loves that Heaney line.

I’m sort of surprised to see Porter Wright Morris & Arthur on that lawsuit. I remember them from when I lived in Columbus and they were always well respected, and one of the oldest firms around. And their recent pro bono work includes:

Porter Wright settled a class action immigration case with the USCIS it filed on behalf of its pro-bono client and a class of 75,000 workers.

Porter Wright helped found the Ohio Military/Veterans Legal Assistance Program (OMVLAP)

and this one:

The firm has devoted thousands of pro bono hours in recent years in support of voting rights on behalf of The Northeast Coalition for The Homeless (NEOCH). The firm’s efforts have contributed to significant decisions relating to absentee and provisional ballots.

Governor Pete Ricketts orders a statewide mask mandate (finally).

Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts on Monday announced additional public health measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the state, which has seen surging numbers in the past six weeks.

Ricketts said masks must be worn at businesses when people are in close contact for at least 15 minutes. He said 6 feet of separation will be required at gyms, bars, restaurants and churches. People can sit with members of their household, Ricketts said.

Occupancy at indoor gatherings will be reduced to 25% — on Oct. 21, Ricketts had decreased that percentage to 50%.

Only family members or people within the same household will be allowed to attend youths’ extracurricular activities, the governor said.

For weddings, up to eight people can be seated at a table, and dancing is allowed if they remain at their table, Ricketts said.

Dining in at restaurants and bars is still allowed, Ricketts said. He said tables must be 6 feet apart and people must remain seated except when going to the restroom or ordering food.

The new rules go into effect at midnight Wednesday. They will be in effect through Nov. 30.

I mean I’m not going to give them any money or alter our policy based on what they want, but they’re welcome to sit back and enjoy the fact that a blue wave truly does lift all boats.

I’m not saying we loudly throw them under the bus yet. Just be very realistic about their effectiveness. They sucked up a metric shit-ton of money that could have gone to other GOTV organizations and produced little to NO results beyond clearing their consciousness of decades of being evil GOP fuckheads. We need massive deprogramming first. 70 million of our fellow Americans thought this racist misogynist Putin-loving tax-evading lying grifter who murdered 230,000+ Americans and counting deserved re-election. These people are not coming around and accepting Biden as President; they will use our models against us to have large rallies claiming that Biden is not legitimate — that he’s senile and owned by China and the leader of a crime family — exactly what our brother has been ranting about for months now.

We did not have our weekly chat with our brother this past Saturday because my BIL persuaded my sister to let everything settle down before we have our standard confrontation, rather than engage when emotions were so raw and the election just decided. In some ways “smart” people make the best targets for Con Artists because they believe themselves to be too intelligent to fall for a con, yet smart enough to see “opportunities” that someone else would miss.

Also at the end of the day, every con is about fear…. either fear of something bad happening to you, or fear of missing out on something good. Fear gives power to con men… and I can only hope that Joe Biden and the rest of us can work together to lift the cloud of fear that has been choking this nation for the last four years.

A different take on the election, and Trump:

Nationalism Is Ascendant Around the Globe. Biden Just Defeated Its Biggest Leader
He underperformed polls. But compared to what’s happened in other countries, the Democrat’s victory is a remarkable achievement. by Daniel Block, Washington Monthly

Yet considered comparatively, there really is something impressive about Biden’s victory. He underperformed his polls, but he outperformed his peers in countries governed by the nationalist right. Unlike Sonia and Rahul Gandhi (both dispatched by Modi); Isaac Herzog, or Benny Gantz (defeated and enlisted by Netanyahu, respectively); or the myriad challengers to Hungary’s Orbán and Poland’s Law and Justice Party, Biden unseated a nationalist incumbent. That is notable anywhere, and especially notable in the United States, where presidents are usually reelected. His popular vote victory will be sizable, and that itself is a statement.

It will take a lot more organizing before progressives can build the coalition they need to truly govern. But political U-turns are extremely difficult, and in an era where demagogues are ascendant, Sen said, “any victory is worth celebrating.”

We also need a comprehensive overhaul of religious tax exemptions to prevent the formation of fascist cults masquerading as churches. I remember being distinctly worried when they came to Minneapolis for the Superb Owl a few years ago. I would not want to meet a group of them in a foul mood.

A different take on the election, and Trump:

Nationalism Is Ascendant Around the Globe. Biden Just Defeated Its Biggest Leader
He underperformed polls. But compared to what’s happened in other countries, the Democrat’s victory is a remarkable achievement. by Daniel Block, Washington Monthly

It certainly does have global implications. I’ve been following the global response to it. Both Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer (head of Labour) offered congratulations and I just saw that Labour actually leads for the first time in awhile there. I don’t know much about him but we need more small letter l- liberals in the world of nations.

It is way past time for James O’Keefe to have an intimate encounter with a nail bat.

Literally everything this motherfucker has “uncovered” has been a giant pile of USDA Prime Grade-A steaming bullshit. Why would I trust him now, when he inevitably says he found something?

More conservatives who don’t understand rules and evidence.

So, those gold plates found by Joseph Smith are real, because four people swore out affidavits that they saw and held them?

Who knew that’s all it took to prove Jesus walked amongst the Native Americans and Angel Moroni existed.

I might offer a $25,000 reward for proof that O’Keefe fucks goats, hamsters and chickens in a specially built chamber beneath Mar-a-Lago.

They will quake in their boots when Commissar Gritty enters the room.
