Opinion: Senate committee chairs should crack down on Republicans, Jen Rubin, WaPo, with what we were all thinking!

It seems, given the Republican Party’s descent into political theater devoid of any regard to truth or governance, that it’s time for Democrats to take a firmer hand in requiring responsible conduct from Republican members. Just as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) instituted rules on mask-wearing and metal detectors, we need rules for committee conduct.
Democrats who control House and Senate committees should consider changing the ground rules. No phones in hearings. If you are not present for most of the hearing (say, 70 percent), you do not get to vote on whatever is before the committee.
I have long inveighed against poor questioning from elected representatives. Committee chairs should put a halt to long-winded speeches. Gavel to silence a member’s rant. Insist that they follow the Jeopardy rule: Their remarks should be in the form of a question. …
Democrats, in other words, should move to a zero-tolerance policy for the type of misinformation that had induced a mob to attack our democracy. If Johnson and others want to spread their toxic lies, they should do it on right-wing media, not perched on the committee dais.

The Qanon Shaman isn’t getting on well.

news.yahoo.com

The motion for pre-trial release filed in the US District Court said Mr Chansley has been “very grateful” for the efforts to accommodate his dietary needs, following his hunger strike until receiving organic food.

“That being said, and without casting aspersions on the efforts of authorities in this regard, the defendant has experienced significant digestive tract issues for which medical consultation has been sought,” the motion said.

He reached out to Mark Meadows for a pardon. Didn’t work out well for him.

I don’t think much will work out well for him going forward either.

Oil/gas industry needs a lot of energy to get that oil/gas out of the ground and to convert it into fuels/products.

Don’t pin all of this on just Mitch McConnell.

The entire Republican Party colluded with the Democrats on the election fraud and cover-up. It’s not just one man.

That’s why Republican officials in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, etc… refused to even look at the election fraud and have fought against meaningful auditing of ballots. That’s why Republicans in the House and Senate voted to certify the fraudulent election.

They were ALL involved in the election fraud. Both Republicans and Democrats, every stinking one of them.

The only way to fix this is to break the system. Get rid of any illusion about the sham “2-party system”. If we now have a uni-party (hiding behind the illusion of a 2-party system offering choice)… then let’s expose it once and for all.

Next election, REFUSE to vote for a Republican. just stay home. If 80 Million Trump voters simply choose to not have any faith in the corrupt, rigged elections and just stay home… Republicans will get swept from offices nation wide in one election cycle. The party will virtually cease to exist.

We can then have a discussion for 2024. Do they WANT a 2-party system of government? Or will we continue to have corrupt, rigged elections? We can’t have both.

The left-right march has been one of the ways the illuminists controlled us.

Washington explicitly warned us they would use the illusion of choice to steal from us and ruin our nation. They would create false wars. We escaped it and they just FOLLOWED US into our new country.

They KNEW they could never take America by force. They were destroyed by farmers with guns.

So they spent centuries corrupting our country in an attempt to sell us back to our masters.

FUCK THESE PEOPLE and FUCK THEIR PUPPETS.

Mattand  Feb 24, 2021 • 11:47:43am

Speaking of QAnon:

My partner had a massive blowout with her mom this weekend. She had to lay down the law with Mom a few months back over politics. Mom’s watching Fox non-stop and has a major narcissistic personality. She forces my partner into these arguments and then flips out when my partner calls her on her bullshit.

Partner says “No more. You don’t get to bring this shit up and just have me sit there. You get to spew your bulkshit, I get to push back.”

For whatever fucking reason, Mom starts in on every CT that Fox is spewing right now. Mom is also upset that we have a new dog who is severely reactive; literally flipping out at everyone but us. Partner’s statement of “When COVID clears, I may have to visit you solo and Matt stays home with the dog” got turned into “I’m never going to visit you ever again.”

My partner was in tears after this last go-around. If Mom didn’t live hundreds of miles away, I’d have had a face-to-face “discussion” about this. Mom is basically a prime example of how Fox just creates this heartache.

Anyways, I got to wondering this morning, after reading the previous post’s QAnon stories, if that’s what’s in store for us next. Her mom is taking COVID seriously from what we can tell, so I’m hoping that’s indicative that maybe she won’t fall for the other shit. And as far as I know, Fox isn’t pushing Q stuff too hard (they’re too busy with all the other lies and racism, I guess.)

Her mother is quite frankly a terrible person. That’s not standard “Mother-in-law’s a battle ax, AMIRITE???” hackery. She’s one of the most maniuplative, self-centered, bigoted, transactional people I’ve ever met. The idea of her going full Q-Tip is ulcer-inducing.

I do not know how folks out there dealing with relatives worse than this are doing it.

I posted that last weekend. My daughter is an epidemiologist and she recommended to take nothing.
The first shot is not the one that can get you feeling bad, by accounts I read, it’s the second one.
We got the Modena and my wife was just tired. I got the chills and aches. That was after the 2nd.
And DO NOT take any OTC pain relief before.
That is a no no.
I felt like dirt but took nothing. Because my daughter is an epidemiologist.
Best of luck.

Morning all. Wife and I got our second Moderna shot Thursday. My wife only felt a sore arm and tired. I got chills and aches in my bones and muscles and sweated through two t shirts on Friday as I basically stayed in bed. Ate very little. Yesterday I felt better but exhausted and dehydrated. Today I’m feeling more normal.
And my epidemiologist daughter suggested we take no Tylenol or anything like that, because it could interfere with the process.
Nyquil is my miracle medicine when I feel like I felt, and man I could have used a dose of that.
A lot of the wisdom on use of OTC pain relief is scattered, which I really didn’t consider before.
The pharmacist who gave us the shot said we could use Tylenol, but not Aleve. Sites on line said either or none.
One thing everyone was firm on is no taking of anything beforehand to lessen effects.
So I decided to listen to my daughter.
Worth it

NYC a few years back got hit with a major snowstorm during a rush hour and it caused a Manhattan-wide traffic jam because accidents at various bridges/tunnels caused everything else to back up, which meant plows couldn’t clear the streets and it was a mess for everyone involved. It came down harder/faster than anticipated and the resulting accidents snarled traffic all over.

Chicago had something like that a few years back too.

One thing I have noted over my, ummm, numerous years of living in NYC is that severe weather events aren’t quite always the transit emergencies they had a tendency to be. Municipal response - especially to snowstorms - is a lot faster and more-efficient than at times in the past: presumably due in part to way-better forecasting/timing, and part (I’m sure) because no Mayor wants to have his legacy tarnished like John Lindsay’s; since mostly what people remember about his Mayoralty was his mishandling of a bad blizzard early on, which left vast swaths of the City snowbound for many days.
Though some things don’t ever change: watching news reports on last week’s snowstorms, we noticed they included that time-honored traditional phrase most long-term New Yorkers have heard since forever:
However, many side streets in Queens still remain unplowed….

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said he doesn’t expect any charges against Tiger Woods after he crashed his car crash on Tuesday morning, leaving his legs and feet seriously injured. During a press conference on Instagram Live, Villanueva said there was no evidence of Woods being under the influence at the scene. As far as investigators can tell, the crash was an accident, Villanueva said, adding, “An accident is not a crime. They do happen, unfortunately.”

He also revealed that the downhill curve where Woods crashed is notoriously dangerous for drivers. Between January 2020 and Tuesday there were 13 accidents, four of them with injuries, along that stretch of road, he said.

Villanueva said on Tuesday that Woods was traveling at “a relatively greater speed than normal.” But authorities are yet to pull any data from the vehicle’s black box, which could provide further information about the exact speed. It will be up to traffic investigators to get a search warrant to seize phone records and other information as they look into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The golf star underwent “a long surgical procedure” on Tuesday.

I did note that Texas uses a lot of electricity given its population — 59GW of electricity consumption is about what France uses in winter with a population of about 67 million people whereas Texas has about 35 million people living there. Perhaps it has a lot of energy-hungry industries?

Yes. The energy industry is surprisingly energy intensive, both from production to the refinery/power plant/other end user, to the actual refining itself. Add to that plastics and other chemicals, aluminum production, and shipping, and you’ve got yourself a real power hog of a State.

It’s warmed up since the weekend, we’re only on about 52GW at the moment. (12% of that is being sent to our British, German, Italian and Swiss neighbours. Nice to have a grid).

And likely, France probably make energy conservation a major priority in its national planning.

Actually, no. Historically France has been really shitty in conservation, why bother when 70% of your electricity is nuclear (almost zero running costs) and 20% is hydro (almost zero running costs). We’re working on that, but we have a long way to go.

Here’s how Trump Hotel staff were taught to handle the former president
From how to open Trump’s obligatory bottles of Diet Coke to the snacks that were required to be constantly available, it was all written down in the “standard operating procedure” document. LGBTQNation

Servers were supposed to recite “Good (time of day) Mr. President. Would you like your Diet Coke with or without ice?” and “discretely present” a mini bottle of hand sanitizer to the germophobic former leader. Chilled bottles and highball glasses were available no matter his choice.

The directions for how to open the bottle spanned seven pages and included illustrations, but the bottle was never to be opened “beforehand” where he couldn’t see it.

and

A tray of junk food was also required to be available. It had to include sour cream and chives Lay’s potato chips, Oreos, Nutter Butters, Milky Way and Snickers candy bars, Chips Ahoy cookies, Tic Tacs, gummy bears, granola bars, and chocolate-covered raisins among other items.

His steaks and shrimp had to be noticeably bigger than everyone else’s. And on…

This is all folklore at this point.

My wife (62 years old, fit, nursing assistant in a care home) had a 3 day reaction to the first Pfizer/BioNTech jab, one day for the second.

My dad (72 years old, really fit (only recently gave up doing half marathons)) had a sore arm after the first moderna jab, a couple of days after the second.

Frankly it’s all pretty random.

“Crying Nazi” finally has something to cry about.

WTF is wrong with these people? Mike Tyson quote, apropos of … what?

Cantwell delivered a rambling and emotional statement which he began by offering a Mike Tyson quote: “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” (The point he was trying to make was unclear.)

Cantwell discussed the fact that the charges stemmed from a feud he had with rival neo-Nazis — a group he had attempted to report to law enforcement.

Cantwell compared the rival Nazis to “black bloc,” mentioned “Satanists,” and complained about having been subjected to a “constant stream of non-stop harassment” from the group. He was overcome with emotion after describing law enforcement “ignoring” his “pleas for help.” He cried again while describing how he could not identify which members of the rival group were targeting him.

The sentence fell short the 51 months prosecutors requested. Sentencing guidelines, which factor in a defendant’s criminal history as well as other mitigating and aggravating factors, called for Cantwell to be sentenced to a term of 41 to 51 months.

(Sobbing) “Oh help me help me policemen who I plan to kill on the mythical Day Of The Rope as unseen enemies harass me constantly but I do not know them but they are real (sobs more)

I was just remarking that there is no real evidence that “the second jab is worse/better”.

Unless you can point to a peer reviewed study of course.

More about the Crying Nazi:

Seventeen firearms were recovered from Cantwell’s apartment and vehicle, according to pre-trial testimony from officers involved in the arrest. Inside his home, police found two AR-15s, five other rifles and long guns, four shotguns, and five handguns. A single handgun was recovered in an unlocked case attached to the exterior of Cantwell’s car, parked just yards away from an elementary school, police said. A large amount of ammunition, as well as a crossbow, a machete, and several knives, were also recovered from the scene, according to police.

This yutz goes on and on about how broke he is … and he’s got (by my estimate) about $11,000 in firearms, about $3000 in ammo and other weapons?

The NRA is such an effective wealth-transfer mechanism from ignorant white trash to oligarchs.

That kind never is out of money. Never. Even when they’re bankrupted, they have money stashed in every hidey hole imaginable.

They aren’t like musicians that signed away all their royalty rights and spent nine years coked up to wake up broke, and gotta shlep their worn out body back on tour to keep their house in a good zip code. They aren’t like business owners that put every last cent into a business that failed, and now they’re losing their house and their shirt. They aren’t like a poor bastard that worked his ass off, then lost his shirt because his wife needed cancer treatment and the hospital bills are overwhelming.

When rich assholes are broke, they aren’t broke the way regular people know broke, up close and personal. He just may resort to a sketchier coke dealer, is all. He’ll still be sleeping on expensive sheets in a good zip code.

The Bare Minimum, Judd Legum, Popular Info

It’s unlikely that Manchin or Sinema will change their position based on a discussion of monopsony power. But, as elected officials who face voters every six years, they might be convinced by the politics of increasing the minimum wage.

A 2019 poll found that 67% of Americans support increasing the minimum wage to $15, including 43% of Republicans. The broad support was reflected in recent state ballot initiatives for a $15 minimum wage. In Florida, for example, Trump prevailed over Biden with 51% of the vote. But a ballot initiative to raise the minimum wage to $15 passed with 61% support.

Manchin says he supports increasing the minimum wage to $11 per hour because it’s “the right place” for “rural America.” But according to the MIT living wage calculator, a single person in West Virginia with no children needs to make at least $13.93 per hour to cover basic expenses like food, housing, and transportation. West Virginia’s minimum wage is currently $8.75. A study by the Economic Policy Institute found that raising the minimum wage to $15 “would benefit approximately 255,000 West Virginia workers,” increasing pay for “35.5 percent of the West Virginia workforce.”

Given that Republicans are given a free pass and Democrats aren’t, it’s better that open harassers like Cuomo (if the allegations are true) have their skeletons revealed before they go to higher office.

From what I read the worse your reaction to the vaccine the sicker you’d have been if you’d have gotten COVID. Not peer reviewed, obviously, so take it as you will.

A one sized fits all minimum wage doesn’t work, especially the vast differential in the cost of living between say West Virginia and say Hawaii or California.

A low minimum wage suitable for West Virginia would be pointless for urban California, but a high minimum wage based on say the SF Bay Area’s cost of living might be job killing or at least inflationary in other parts.

Having a geographically based minimum wage also tied to the local COLA is a reasonable approach. Federal jobs have pay adjustments based on the Cost of living. Of course, this might end up higher than what Senator Joe Machin (Damnit we need him - WV) wants, even in West Virginia.

She’s a real piece of work:

She was supported by Larry Householder and a committee that he handpicked, against the recommendation of the Geauga County GOP Executive Committee. She was sworn in on May 29, 2019. On the same day, Grendell voted for House Bill 6, for which Householder was ultimately arrested by the FBI as part of an alleged $61M bribery and racketeering scheme…

In September of 2020, she proposed a bill to cancel the state of emergency and all public health restrictions. She stated that “the flu is far higher, far higher, and we don’t wear masks for that.” The Ohio Department of Health show an average seasonal flu death rate of 0.1% and a COVID-19 death rate of 3-4%.Three months after Grendell proposed her bill, average COVID-19 cases in Ohio had increased by more than 10x…

In December 2020, The Geauga Maple Leaf stated that several sources were reporting that Grendell and her husband, Judge Tim Grendell, had contracted COVID-19. When reached by phone for comment, Grendell said, “no comment” and hung up. It is not known if she adhered to quarantine guidelines.

When the minimum wage went to $1/hr, 1964 IIRC, I got a raise out of it. My $1/hr then is worth $8.44 now. The kids and the working poor have been screwed for decades.

My first official job was being a stockboy at Pier One for $2.50 an hour. They needed a signpainter, too, so I doubled at that and was paid slightly higher, $3-something. I wound up inventing many many reasons to paint signs.

I was doing the $1/hr while living on 39th Street, just off Park (Manhattan mid-town). My take-home was almost exactly room and board at a weird-ass “residence club”. I survived on fairly regular overtime, though one Sunday I went down Lexington Ave, making supper out of the pistachio machines—to proud to take my last remaining pennies to the Automat.

I don’t think much will work out well for him going forward either.

I’m not sure what counts as my “first job”…

Under the age of 5 I used to push bundles of insulation around framed out houses… until I walked through a framed out wall in a split level house and tumbled a couple of feet.

Little bit older than that, I would work with my dad doing custom weatherstripping on high priced homes. Then it was acoustical ceilings by around junior high. We started doing commercial doors around high school (at which point I was picking up and delivering material once I had my driver’s license). There was also a couple years as part time lifeguard in Laguna Beach. Followed by delivering pizzas in college.

Honestly, couldn’t tell you want I was paid for any of those jobs at this point.

It basically says that Manchin, Murkowski and Saunders, as well as the rest of the Republicans in lockstep, are not going to vote for her and that replacements are now being vetted by the White House.

Fun fact, minimum wage in South Dakota is $9.45 and is tagged to the consumer price index, so it’s likely going to continue to go up. Second “fun” fact: South Dakota is one of those shitty states that still allows a “tipped minimum wage.”

What’s really amazing to me is that there are 31 states with a minimum wage over the federal level (sidenote: Georgia, the fuck you doing?). So in most states, this is a much smaller increase than people probably realize.

Remember Acorn? Before they were destroyed by bogus claims, in addition to all the other things they fought for, Acorn was a driver of living wage ordinances. It still pisses me off what happened to that organization.

The more I think about it, the more his quote irks me. Not only is he blatantly lying at least twice. There’s no context. I was able to save enough money in high school working 10 cents over minimum wage as a dishwasher and weekend COOK (at a much swankier restaurant than a Star Family restaurant) to pay for at least two years of state college tuition and room and board. And, I didn’t work full time when high school was in session. Try paying for a year of state college tuition now on minimum wage, much less tuition, room, and board.

No way to have a commission analogous to one studying 9/11. One political party is totally complicit and probably wants it to include an investigation into “voting fraud”. The real investigation should also cover everyone who promoted the “Stop the Steal” lie and everyone involved in hampering the election, include DeJoy and his efforts to sabotage the mail.

Out of college in 2006, I was working a .NET job at $15/hr. I worked between $15-$25/hr (hourly and salaried) for the first 10 years of my career, then I hit it big. It took a while, coming from a family where my father worked at the same company for 30 years, to sink in that in this era and in my field, you get a raise by going somewhere else.

Given that Republicans are given a free pass and Democrats aren’t, it’s better that open harassers like Cuomo (if the allegations are true) have their skeletons revealed before they go to higher office.

Or we end up with a situtation like the North Carolina Senate race where Cunningham was leading up until news about his sexts came out, and brought us to this 50-50 Senate situation.

Wasn’t Cunningham engaging only in good old-fashioned adultery and not unwanted advances? It wouldn’t be surprising if a significant portion of Congress were engaging in similar foibles, activities that are not illegal, but can prove fatal in a close election.
