There’s a house in the next town who had a Trump 2020 3x5 yard sign that was up until a few weeks ago.

It’s now, “Don’t Blame Me, I Voted For Trump”.

Um…. what are we blaming you for? An economy on the mend, jobs coming back, a competent vaccine rollout nationally, and Trump facing lawsuits/prosecutions, all while his followers are facing trials and plea deals for their insurrection. And Stone faces tax evasion charges.

Trump killed 500,000+ Americans. That’s the only metric that matters. He wrecked the nation, undermined our natsec, and subverted democracy to try and stay in power despite losing in a landslide.

Fuck the GOP.

I saw that downstairs. I hope everything goes well with her surgery. I couldn’t imagine having a relative in the hospital during the pandemic.

Moi aussi…
Hopefully, the hospital may have relaxed its visiting rules a bit (especially if you have your “vaccine passport”) - my wife had to go to the hospital last April (at the peak of the COVID “first wave”) - in addition to the fears of infection (because you know these can happen no matter how conscientious they are), there was also the absolute lockdown, so I couldn’t even visit. Hope you don;t have the same problem…

re: #4 stpaulbear

There was a CBS Sunday Morning where they interviewed Bush at his ranch, and it was in support of his new book celebrating immigrants and immigration. Even now, he can’t give a full-throated rebuttal of the white nationalist GOP base. That would be heretical. He can’t denounce Trump and call him what he truly is.

It’s obscene.

But it’s another day in GOP world, where they continue to mainstream white supremacy and goddamned Nazism while the nation is roiled by right wing domestic terrorism, attacks on immigrants, and all egged on by the GOP leader: Trump.

Trump isn’t the cause. He’s the symptom. White nationalists blocked immigration reform when Bush was in office. They’re still at it now. Fox is all-in. OAN is all in.

It stinks. It just fucking stinks. Like rubbing your face on stucco. For what. It’s the people who are not family with me. Family stinks.
And that’s the kindest I can say.
Sorry.

I can relate, though it long predates Trump.

I sort of consider Little Green Footballs and Wonkette to be the two sides of my family now, since my actual family disowned me decades ago (and my wife’s family did the same with her).

Both our families are explicitly named in our wills as prohibited from receiving anything from us in an inheritance.

I’ve joked with my wife we could leave our house with Mrs. Shoenkopf and our Smart car with Mr. Johnson (or the other way round), but I’m not sure either of them would want to come to the Nebraska Panhandle (and what they would do with a house here).

Panhandle Public Health District lists it as the absolute number who have received the complete vaccination series rather than a percentage.

Dividing the number into the estimated population of the area leaves us with 30.4% fully vaccinated. (That number doesn’t include people who did not get their vaccinations in Nebraska, such as me. When my wife gets her second dose I will take my card from the VA in to be entered, but I imagine there are others who won’t for various reasons.)

Safety regulators in the US have urged owners of a Peloton treadmill to stop using the product “immediately” if they have children or pets in the home.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says it is aware of 39 incidents including one death, involving the Peloton Tread+.

Peloton had already confirmed the death last month and said children should stay away from the machines.

On Saturday, Peloton called the CPSC’s warning “inaccurate and misleading”.

Today was a bit of a revelation for me. Closing Day at Vail Mountain. It’s always a party, and this one was the first in two years, we didn’t get a proper Closing Day last year on account of pandemic. So I stopped by some of my favorite vistas, skied a few runs (skiing today was just okay, snow wasn’t soft enough up high, it didn’t warm up enough for good mashed potato snow, weather was cloudy) and then milled about on the summit, where throngs of people with loud portable speakers and costumes were smiling, laughing… and drinking. As most of you know, I’m sober now, more than a year and a half. I waited for a bit to see if I’d run into anyone I knew, but after a while it got too crowded and I moved on. And I excluded myself, for the first time in my adult life, from Closing Day revelries. I was back at my car at 1:30. I tweeted…

I felt… out of place. There was feelings of melancholy, like I was on the outside of a good time, looking in. In retrospect, it’s just me coming to grips with the new me, and allowing myself to feel these things. And, I did the right thing. Debaucherous drinking everywhere you look? You probably shouldn’t be hanging out there.

And besides, I’m not done skiing this year. Breckenridge doesn’t close until 31 May (with the snow we’ve got, if they make it to that date I’ll be very surprised), I’ll be meeting my birthday ski buddy on our birthday at Winter Park in a few weeks, and Arapahoe Basin’s closing date is TBD.

My family went from France, to the Scottish isles, to Northern Ireland, to Philadelphia, in about as many generations. The one mystery that’s still not completely solved is my dad’s mom’s family, who left Kentucky for reasons still unclear during the run-up to the Civil War, and where records were lost. It seems like there was some kind of disowning going on, but nothing concrete has surfaced.

that is so weird. You have a closer connection to white American citizenship than I do (because I’m half black-Irish and half Slovakian/Rom) and I have never had worries about being called a white ni-CLANG.
I grew up in immigrant communities, so it’s just so weird when you say stuff like that.

Not as bad as the eventual Led Zeppelin Black Dog on flute on the 25 story elevator ride, but Applebee’s is now using AC-DC Back in Black for tv commercials.
I have to lay down longer now because either I’m having a cardiac episode or my leather jacket was pleather.

But who can blame them? Family and loved ones…After all, sell it, divvy it up, and after you shed this mortal coil, they can just fold paper and argue less than they would pulling the bones off your carcass.

re: #42 teleskiguy

Dude, you rock. Respect.

that is so weird. You have a closer connection to white American citizenship than I do (because I’m half black-Irish and half Slovakian/Rom) and I have never had worries about being called a white ni-CLANG.
I grew up in immigrant communities, so it’s just so weird when you say stuffl ike that.
Especially since one of my grade schools was St. Florian’s in Buffalo NY where we were taught by Felician Polish nuns. And St Florian’s was a major presence in the community.

Purity people are so fucking weird

My hair grew as an Afro. 3rd grade teacher thought it was so funny to call me “N-Word-Head” and that stuck all thru the day I got out of High School Hell. Bad enough she did it so did the rest of the teachers, the coaches and staff encouraged kids to use that slur.

65+ now and I do not forget and I do not forgive. Assholes made the fatal mistake once of sending “N-Word Head” an invitation to the high school reunion.

This was also my “nickname” in elementary and middle school, but thankfully that stopped once our school was integrated in 1964 and I made a bunch of new friends who were all “N-Word-Heads.”

I got the J&J vaccine literally like 2 days before Minnesota paused rollout of that vaccine. That’s probably why Mrs. Fish was designated for the Pfizer vaccine at a different site, instead of being given the option of going downtown.

I’d never met a fox outdoors before, but this morning one wandered by my hangar out at the airport. There were planes taxiing and departing, along with various joggers along a trail outside the perimeter fence—it was completely unfazed by the activity, so must have been a local resident. It was a surprise to see it at 10 AM, as they are normally nocturnal.

I had to go retrieve my camera; when I’d returned it had wandered off between the taxiway and further runway; so was about twice as far away as when I first saw him or her. (Either a well-fed todd, or a preggers vixen)

I gave a shout for it to look at the camera; it complied before going back to nosing around in the grass.

The Onion:

Police Department To Avoid Future Errors By Replacing All Equipment Officers Carry With Guns

BROOKLYN CENTER, MN— In a swift response to renewed calls for reform following the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright, the Brooklyn Center Police Department announced Tuesday that they would avoid future errors by replacing all equipment that officers carry with guns. “Handcuffs, nightsticks, pepper spray—anything an officer could possibly reach for while on duty will now be a semi-automatic pistol to make sure we’re not making any more mistakes,” said acting police chief Tony Greunig, who called former police officer Kim Potter’s lethal mix-up between her gun and Taser a “tragic accident” that could have easily been avoided had she been carrying nothing but dozens of guns in the first place. “This comprehensive citywide initiative will ensure our officers never make the same mistake again. Regardless of the situation they’re responding to, the officer will always be reaching for a gun. Gun shoes, gun badge, gun hat, gun car. Kevlar vests will be placed by a full bandolier of guns covering both sides of our chests.” At press time, dozens of Brooklyn Center residents were dead after an officer had mistakenly reached for his AR-15 rather than his Glock 17.

Another shooting in the Lennox section of Los Angeles leaves 1 dead…

It’s almost not even worth mentioning solo gunshot deaths anymore. Over sixty a day are suicides (I have decided to retire from the well-regulated militia). Oh, that’s called irony, by the way.

We’ve got enough mass shootings to fill up newspaper pages every day. They’re good for business.

Then there’s the old “If I can’t love her, nobody else will” which results in a murder and a suicide or a double-murder and a suicide, or occasionally, like in Austin today, a triple-murder and “I may or may not jack myself, depending on how far my police training can get me away from Central Texas in the next 36 hours”.

The definition of a mass shooting is at least four casualties. I guarantee you that the families of the three dead people today absolutely think it is a mass shooting. If the shooter had jacked himself after executing three people, it would have made the grade.

It makes me sick to my stomach that we make these distinctions when quantifying human pain. Any death lessens me.

Russia expels Czech diplomats over explosion row (BBC)

Having the Czechs kick out so many Russian spies from the embassy is a Big Deal, since the Czech Republic is/was the Russian base of operations for a lot of Eastern Europe. This is right after the Bulgarians rolled up a bunch of Russian intelligence operations in a pretty public way.

In case anyone wants to know what the spat is about, in 2014 the SAME FUCKING GUYS who tried to kill the Skripals in the UK sabotaged an arms shipment from CZE to Ukraine, and likely fucked it up so it blew up in CZE killing two people.

The Russian government/media borg is taking it well: the Czechs are all lapdogs of their US/UK masters (because dominance and submission are the only concepts the Kremlin understands). So boo hoo everybody is ganging up on poor Russia (who’s a Superpower, doncha know).

Oh sure, and will continue to parrot whatever nonsense Perviy Kanal pumps out as long as it fulfils their emotional and/or financial needs. You’d also think that after enough German, Austrian, and so on senior government officials just sort of roll right into very well paying Rosneft directorships after leaving office, people might start getting a little suspicious of Putinphiles in European governments.

Hell they never even asked us about insurance or anything related to payment. The only thing I wasn’t thrilled about is driving a half hour to get to the drive thru place. If I was the pastor of that church, I would start making phone calls to people who would take in people in their homes and help. Then I would get myself interviews on local news and hold press conferences. Along with going out into the community and talking about community policing vs warrior cop training, and education about civil rights in the community. And gather other church leaders together and go see the chief of police and other local officials.

Media outlets are noting that police are gearing up for protests/riots should the Chauvin verdict come down.

No. They’re not going to riot if the Chauvin verdict is handed down. They’re going to have vigils until the verdict comes down. If Chauvin is somehow not found guilty for murdering George Floyd, there will be protests, and cops will engage in violent responses to even peaceful protests. As it is, they’re pushing curfews and other anti-1A tactics including attacking legitimate journalists covering those protests.

It’s further proof that policing in the country is fucked up beyond all recognition and our priorities are likewise screwed up.

NYC is often a leading indicator of where we are with policing. 30,000+ cops. A budget of over $10 billion a year. And they pay out $200 million a year in settlements/verdicts due to police brutality and excessive force. They consider this a cost of doing business - a rounding error. Who pays that? The very communities that are hardest hit by the disproportionate use of force against persons of color.

So when Eric Garner’s family gets a settlement of $5.9 from NYC, it’s the city’s taxpayers who foot that bill. Not the NYPD. Not the officers or the union involved. The NYPD is unmoved by those settlements. The union is unmoved by those settlements.

They just keep doing what they’ve been doing. They keep engaging in aggressive tactics, including those that violate the 1A when they swarm and escalate violence during peaceful protests using tactics like kettling.

They most definitely did not, not yet, at any rate. In addition, this isn’t the Minneapolis Police Department, this is a suburb that is its own city. I’m sure there are some fine state representatives who are pushing back on this, but I’m disappointed to say that the governor - whom I otherwise love, he’s been taking good care of us during the pandemic - is kinda taking the asshole view here and admonishing the protesters about not picking fights with the police. I didn’t read the article so maybe there is something stupid in there, but I agree with the headline premise. The outdoor all the time mandates never made any sense, and it was never supported by any science. If I am out walking my dog alone in the woods I’ll be damned if I am going to wear a mask. I keep one with me and if I see someone coming my way I will put it on until they are well past me, but even that is just safety theater. The evidence that transmission can happen outdoors in a walk by interaction is basically nil.

The most common response I get when I ask for a mask correction is an apology and immediate compliance.

When I’m walking on the sidewalk, my mask is down until someone approaches. Then I pull mine up, and so do they, or they start fishing around in their pockets, or pull up their t-shirt and stay wide. Street-crossing is very common.

I only wear them indoors unless I am going to be in a very crowded outdoor location, which is the very last place I am going to be anytime in the near future.

Same here. My best friend and I had this discussion on Sunday, talking about how Minnesotans largely being outdoorsy types helped us last summer with managing the pandemic, and we touched on the football game in Alabama with the massive crowd and how that was likely going to make some people sick.

Places like NYC and other large cities with a lot of pedestrian traffic.

Plenty of cities have them for the downtown area, especial pedestrian precincts, and the supermarket requires them for the parking lot. Which makes sense, as you have to go fetch a cart and all…

re: #242 danarchy

I didn’t read the article so maybe there is something stupid in there, but I agree with the headline premise. The outdoor all the time mandates never made any sense, and it was never supported by any science. If I am out walking my dog alone in the woods I’ll be damned if I am going to wear a mask. I keep one with me and if I see someone coming my way I will put it on until they are well past me, but even that is just safety theater. The evidence that transmission can happen outdoors in a walk by interaction is basically nil.

That’s the “protocol” we’ve been using around here since the first shutdown in spring 2020. (Masking when you pass someone is more a courtesy to someone who might be more paranoid than you than a prevention, but courtesy is good.) What’s the problem?

I live in the Boston area, and I agree with the author. Masking compliance is very high, and it has become a virtue-signaling (and shaming) thing. I’m upset. I am law-abiding, but I should not have to be a right-winger to hold a different opinion from those advocating for full-time masks and lockdowns.

Just saying public policy shouldn’t cater to the paranoid it should respond to the best understanding of the science. If individuals want to show that courtesy that’s fine. When the state mandates you wear a mask outdoors in public all the time, it probably just makes more people even more paranoid for no good reason.

Generally stop signs go up where there is a history of traffic accidents or where there is a high probability based on existing knowledge that there will be accidents. In this case the evidence shows there is little to no risk of contracting covid outdoors in a passing interaction.

Several states have an all the time in public mask policy. Massachusetts being one of them.

Governor Baker issued an Order effective November 6, 2020 requiring face masks or cloth face coverings in all public places, whether indoors or outdoors, even where they are able to maintain 6 feet of distance from others. Masks or face coverings are encouraged but not required for children between the ages of 2 and 5. Read the full DPH Guidance and Frequently Asked Questions.

Around here, we don’t have a lot of people together, so there isn’t a need to require it. And if I do end up passing someone, we just make sure to swing wide from each other. But every place is different.

But, if I was some place more packed, I would be wearing my mask even though I am fully vaccinated, because there’s still a chance I could spread it, and would still like to minimize my chances of catching it again. And I still discretely flip the people off running around not wearing masks now, because I know a majority of them haven’t been vaccinated.
