As President I had the chance to review requests for clemency from people who were incarcerated. It was a task I never took lightly, since I knew my decision could change the course of someoneās life.
That was certainly true for John Gargano, Jr. I granted John clemency in 2016, and just last month, he graduated from New York University with an impressive 3.9 GPA and a Bachelor of Science in Leadership and Management Studies.
John grew up on a small vegetable farm in New Jersey. He later moved to Philadelphia after high school and began working various jobs to make ends meet. While there, he started using and selling drugs and was ultimately arrested and sentenced to 30 years in prison, despite being a non-violent first-time offender. For the first three years he was incarcerated, John didnāt want to talk to anyone. But he eventually vowed that he āwould refuse to allow his sentence to break himā and turned to education to āinspire and restore his hope for the future.ā He started taking classes through the Ohio University College Program for the Incarcerated, and helped others prepare for their GED.
After John was granted clemency, the transition out of the criminal justice system wasnāt easy. But he credits family and programs like the Coming Home Project at St. Lukeās Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, the Three Strikes Project, and the Colleges Initiative at John Jay College for helping him make it through. In 2017, John enrolled at Hostos Community College and graduated with a 4.0 GPA and an Associateās degree in Business Management. In 2019, he transferred to NYU on a scholarship where he continued to excel in his studies, participating in their Leadership Fellows program and working as a manager at a restaurant. He also worked to help others who were incarcerated find jobs or pursue higher education.

Our NJ cooling degree days records for April, May, June, July, and August have all been set in the past 20 years. September goes back to 1961, and October is again within the past 20 years.

Meanwhile, Ohio is doing the opposite; trying to repeal mandatory vaccination programmes and even making it illegal for an employer to ask a customer or employee if theyāve received a vaccine.

When a Catholic school art teacher was asked to take on extra responsibilities, she requested a raise, explaining that she was about to have a baby.
Weeks later, she was fired from her New Jersey elementary school. The principal, a Roman Catholic nun, told her she was being terminated ābecause she was pregnant and unmarried,ā court records show.
The woman sued. Her daughter is now 7, but the lawsuit remains in limbo, caught in a yearslong back-and-forth between New Jerseyās trial and appellate courts.
An appeals court has twice sided with the ex-teacher, Victoria Crisitello. But last month, the stateās highest court, acting on an appeal by the school, agreed to hear the case, signaling a willingness to wade into the highly charged debate over the relationship between the government and religion.
Its decision comes less than a year after the United States Supreme Court upheld the rights of church-run schools to terminate lay teachers, one of a string of recent decisions by a court far more likely to rule in favor of religious rights than not.

My niece is sending her children to a Jewish day school that is similarly priced for elementary school. The school is nowhere near as convenient as the public schools, but she feels they are getting a better education (I donāt have the information to judge the quality of education at the various nearby Chicago public schools). But the one āamusingā sidelight was that the school sent a note to the parents that, once they are eligible, all students must get the COVID vaccine if they wished to continue at the school. Several parents went ballistic at that note. I believe that these parents themselves were vaccinated but they objected to their children being forced to get the vaccine. The school withdrew that requirement. For now all students are masked unless they are dining.

One of these is quite unlike the other.
We get hot weather on the East Coast. We even get 90s like weāre seeing now. We even occasionally get 100, but weāre looking at our 3d heat wave of June. Our NJ cooling degree days records for April, May, June, July, and August have all been set in the past 20 years. September goes back to 1961, and October is again within the past 20 years.
But itās extremely uncommon for those kinds of temps to show up in the Pacific Northwest. 100+ temps with no AC or limited AC? Yeah, thatās a deadly combination.
As someone who is currently enduring this, itās brutal. Saturday, Teddy and I went to the cooling center at the local community center. For the longest time, myself and one other person were the only ones there. Yesterday and today, Iāve been on campus in my airconditioned office. Not too many people on campus. Iām not sure how most people are staying safe. I expected more people at both the cooling center and campus.
Yesterday I got text messages, the power was off at my apartment from about 2pm to 4:30pm. I donāt know how widespread the outage was. When I was coming home from campus, there was a bucket truck working on the power lines.
Itās taking a toll on Teddy.
