Rando

Imbeciles think they have a right to stick their heads, hands, and laws in every woman’s uterus, but they are offended by being encouraged to get vaccinated for an out of control and rapidly mutating deadly virus.

Not to mention that all children are basically unprotected right now.

Because pro-fucking- life or some such shit they howl about.

Fuck them all.

I think they’ve finally realized that if their people aren’t vaccinated, they’re going to get sick, and if their people aren’t vaccinated, they’re going to get blamed for COVID outbreaks in the future.”

— GOP pollster Frank Luntz, quoted by the Associated Press, on why Republicans are starting to more forcefully push for vaccinations.

Frank, its just theater. They’re not doing anything

While some Republicans may be using strong words to promote the vaccine, few are proposing new measures to urge vaccination, such as incentives, public information campaigns or more aggressive outreach,” the Associated Press reports

The fact that less than half of the GOP Congress is vaccinated and 100 percent of Democrats are vaccinated, speaks to how much bullshit their sudden concerns are. All of them had access to the vaccines long before I did, as well as most of the public. They can shove their concern after over 600K of us are dead and they did less than nothing to help. Fuck their feelings.

It’s lip service so right-wing media and their Democratic-hating useful idiots can claim: “Oh, silly liberals, conservatives were always for vaccines,” and point to a single vaccine sympathetic sound bite… that’s surrounded by months of entertaining every anti-vaxx conspiracy theory and writing it off as “just asking questions.”

The only reasons Republicans all of a sudden want people to get vaccinated is because 1.) Their voters are literally dying and the replacement levels of new Republican voters aren’t matching the dead ones. 2.) They have internal polling that shows the voters they lost in 2020 (educated whites in the suburbs) are totally put off by the appeals to the lowest common denominator. 3) The money is drying up. Don’t believe me? Satan himself (Mitch McConnell) is coming out saying to get your asses vaccinated. Why? See the above three examples.

EDIT: Make it four. A lot of the people dying are white.

Florida-based software supplier Kaseya has obtained a universal key that will decrypt all businesses and public organizations crippled in the July 4 global ransomware attack. The Russia-affiliated REvil syndicate released the malware, which exploited Kaseya’s software and immobilized more than 1,000 targets. Kaseya spokesperson Dana Liedholm would only disclose that the key came from a “trusted third party,” and that Kaseya was distributing it to all victims. Ransomware analysts suggested multiple possibilities for the master key’s appearance, including Kaseya paying the ransom, or the Kremlin seizing the key and handing it over.

Heh, now I’ve got a mental image of Putin going on a Hitlerian Downfall rant - having the REvil gang brought into his office, and yelling at them, “What is this madness? You’ve gone too far this time! Give us the master key now and count yourselves damned lucky I don’t have all of you taken outside and immediately shot!”

You know, personal responsibility is NOT the same as “Hey, I’m going to do whatever stupid shit I want to and I dare you to stop me!”.

It involves, you know, ACTUAL responsibility.

You could apply personal responsibility to traffic laws and remove all of those Do Not Enter signs put in place to prevent people from going the wrong way down the highway. You could argue that it’s your responsibility to know which way the traffic flows and signs are a waste of public resources However, that would tend to be problematic.

Mask mandates are the Do Not Enter signs of COVID response. People would interpret no signage as “it must be OK to go down this ramp otherwise authorities would have placed a sign here”. Some people interpret no mask mandates as “it must not be so worth it to wear a mask because otherwise the authorities would mandate them”.

I have nothing wrong with the name at all. I just kinda wish they had a better logo. I get the wings they borrowed from the statue, but it still just looks all sorts of generic. Which…you know, is better than the logos they had under the old name by a long shot, but I think they could have done better still. The new wordmark and cap logo is a very big improvement over the super generic block C they had after retiring the caricature though.

I’d tie it to the lowest wage of the employees of a given company. Say 30 times the lowest wage offered, including all stock options, golden parachutes, etc.

So, if the lowest wage is $15 per hour, then the CEO wage can be no more than $450 an hour. It’s an obscene amount of money, so if CEO wants to increase own wage, they’d have to hike wages for his lowest wage employees.

$16 per hour gets him to $480 per hour. Etc.

That $450 an hour equates to $900k a year for a salaried employee (assume 2000 hours). That’s not a bad deal for total compensation for a top executive.

Thanks. CNBC now has some more details

The order requires the release bond — which is among the highest ever set in the world — to be secured by $5 million cash, another $21.23 million in securities and Barrack’s home in California.

Donohue ordered Barrack to surrender his passport, to be fitted with an electronic bracelet, and be subject to GPS monitoring and a curfew.

Barrack also was ordered to stay in the company of his lawyers until at least his and Grimes’ arraignment Monday in Brooklyn.

He also cannot transfer any funds overseas, is barred from transferring more than $50,000 except for attorneys fees, and is prohibited from trading securities without written permission from prosecutors. His travel is restricted to the federal Central District of California, and to the Southern and Eastern districts of New York, which encompass New York City, Long Island, and several counties to the north of the Big Apple.

No. It isn’t.

And if you’re a company like Apple, the starting salary is much higher.

I do foresee one way these companies will avoid that - turning low wage workers into contract workers, outsourcing, etc., all so that they can create a higher base wage to compute the CEO wages. They would also get to minimize their costs otherwise by reducing benefits costs as well.

No easy answers, but the biggest problem is that we’ve tied health benefits to employment. That keeps a lot of people stuck in jobs with no movement.

which is all well and good when you are talking about wages, but when you own a stake in the company minimizing employee cost can perversely increase the value of your ownership stake, a lot more than just some salary.

Totally off topic and reviving a zombie thread, but about OpenStreetMap:

re: #205 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

I don’t see a change to the Smith Ave. at the administrative boundary (where the permanent barricades are)

Well, this turns out to be a problem with the default rendering — it doesn’t show the barriers. It knows they’re there and if you use the “directions” function it will route you around them.

For example from 41.59710, -102.85762 (on Smith avenue before the barriers) to 41.59711, -102.85371 (roughly the post office) by car it says:

1. Start on Smith Avenue 140m
2. Sharp left onto US 26 500m
3. Turn left onto Main Street 110m
4. Turn right onto Smith Avenue 10m
5. Reach destination

…instead of just sending you down Smith Avenue crashing through the jersey barriers.

If you say you’re on foot it says just walk directly down Smith Avenue.

There are two bicycle algorithms, one says just lift the bike over, the other sends you the long way round.

I was a bit surprised the barriers didn’t show up on the basic map.

This means that I must carry her in, because her feet are too delicate for the gravel walk. She complains bitterly the entire short walk in—not that I am carrying her, but that I am apparently not carrying her to her satisfaction.

Anybody here remember this great piece by a Norwegian right-wing blogger himself that he wrote in the wake of 22 juli and calling out fellow right-wing idiots on their tone-deaf reaction to the events 10 years ago?

On Bruce Bawer and Islam criticism after 22/7:

I don’t want to apportion blame here, not now. Clearly none of these writers have ever advocated violence. But it is equally clear that there are parts of the anti-Islamic ideology that are compatible with violence, and use rhetoric that, although non-violent, carries the obvious implication of violence.

Consider the rhetoric that paints Europe’s political elite as traitors who have pushed Europe towards the brink of destruction with their multicultural policies, leading us inevitably towards a civil war with the Muslims. Now, the people who say these things do not encourage violence. But, ask yourself, what do countries normally do with traitors in wartime? They execute them. What does one normally do in a civil war? One picks up a gun, and joins the side one agrees with.

The responsibility for July 22 rests with the terrorist who carried out these attacks, Anders Behring Breivik. But what we see here is a relationship between words and action that we are familiar with from other brands of terrorism and ideological violence through history: Anarchists, Communists, Nazis, and Islamists. There are, or were, in these movements, some who use words, and words alone, as they warn of the Great Conspiracy and the Coming Crisis. And then somebody else comes along, a true believer, a martyr to the cause, and takes these ideas to their natural, bloody consequence.

re: #67 lawhawk

The ACA hasn’t addressed this issue enough IMO. Yes you can get a really good subsidy amount, but if the policy sucks, then why bother? In Georgia they even allow sales of those awful “catastrophic illness” insurance polices on the exchange and they don’t cover shit. Sometimes with deductibles as high as 10K. States need to be forced to accept Medicare expansion and something still needs to be done about the extra polices you have to buy to get full coverage. My husband’s part B plan is costing 150 a month taken from his disability check. That’s three times more than he was paying for our joint Ambetter plan. I also notice that he never once had to fight and argue over his care or treatment with Ambetter. His biggest thing is finding someone to cover his Freestyle Libre testing materials. He can’t use the standard test strips because of neuropathy in his hands. Part A is supposed to cover it, he’s trying to find out what the hold up is.He finally got his insulin pens covered but he needs two kinds of insulin and one is still a bit pricey even with coverage. He’s been using a standard vial insulin with needles and he struggles with that a lot. It shouldn’t require that much jumping through hoops to get medical care.

I remember when wingnuts has a shit fit over the government getting between you and your doctor. Bullshit, the biggest problem is insurance companies and hospital corporations and how many layers of crap stand between you and healthcare. Insurance companies are the problem not the solution.

WASHINGTON (AP) — When Nancy Pelosi raised a glass to Liz Cheney, it was the most unlikely of toasts.

Democratic lawmakers and the Republican congresswoman were gathered in the House speaker’s office as the group prepared for the first session of the committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol.

Pelosi spoke of the “solemn responsibility” before them and raised her water glass to Cheney, a daughter of the former vice president and the sole Republican in the room.

“Let us salute Liz for her courage,” she said, according to a person familiar with the gathering who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private meeting.

Politics often creates unlikely alliances, the odd-couple arrangements between would-be foes who drop their differences to engage on a common cause.

But the emerging partnership between Pelosi and Cheney is remarkable, if not astonishing, as the longtime political adversaries join forces to investigate what happened the day former President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol.

Rarely has there been a meeting of the minds like this — two of the strongest women on Capitol Hill, partisans at opposite ends of the political divide — bonding over a shared belief that the truth about the insurrection should come out and those responsible held accountable. They believe no less than the functioning of America’s democracy is on the line.

“Nothing draws politicians together like a shared enemy,” said John Pitney, a former Republican staffer and professor of politics at Claremont McKenna College.

The committee will hold its first hearing next week, and the stakes of the Pelosi-Cheney alliance have never been higher. The panel will hear testimony from police officers who battled the Trump supporters that day at the Capitol. The officers have portrayed the hourslong siege as hardly a gathering of peaceful demonstrators, as some Republicans claim, but rather a violent mob trying to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s election.

As their new partnership unfolds, the risks and rewards have an uneven flow. Pelosi benefits more politically from drawing Cheney to her side, giving the committee’s investigation the big-name bipartisan stamp it needs to avoid being viewed as a strictly political exercise.

For Cheney, who has already been booted from GOP leadership over her criticism of Trump, the political dangers are far greater. She was one of 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump over the insurrection, and her willingness to speak out against his top ally, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, now leaves her isolated on Capitol Hill. She is facing blowback from the ranks and serious primary challenges for her reelection back home.

re: #165 DesertDenizen

Just like their CPAC “plan” to reinstall TFG as President, it hinges on large numbers of Democrats in the House suddenly and inexplicably converting to Republicans, starting with the House Black Caucus.

If they’ll only see the “Truth” and substitute Republican propaganda for news, surely they’ll join the cult and get rid of the Democrats to please the white nationalist Republicans. From the perspective of a Republican, I see nothing wrong with this cunning plan.

i just installed the linux os for dual boot with windows 7.

it’ll take a while till i get comfortable and work the transition out, especially google drive, tax s/w, some hardware, etc.

and get it configured for b/u and restore, and other stuff that i can rely on and understand.

for a variety of reasons i went with linux mint/cinnamon.

for all you freebsd and other cheerleaders, think of it like motorcycling - wave at everyone on two wheels no matter what brand…

Mrsdm says I should name it #thegreatwin7linuxconversion and start posting accordingly.

i think one at a time is enough. and i’m behind on this week’s pond anyway.

A Dallas towing company has agreed to pay $50,000 as part of an settlement reached with the Justice Department regarding allegations the company illegally sold five service members’ vehicles, Justice announced today.

Justice officials filed the initial complaint Sept. 28, 2020 alleging United Tows, LLC, auctioned off the vehicles without obtaining court orders, in violation of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act. One vehicle belonged to now-Senior Airman Fassil Mekete, who was was attending Air Force basic training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, in 2017.

According to Justice officials, when Mekete found out his vehicle had been towed, he contacted United Tows and told them he was out of town on active duty. However, the owner told him she didn’t believe he was in the military; and the company sold his 1998 Toyota Corolla at auction. Before leaving for basic training, Mekete had received permission from the owner of a martial arts studio to leave his car and some personal belongings in the studio’s parking lot, since he no longer had a lease in Dallas.

A subsequent investigation revealed that United Tows allegedly illegally sold at least four other vehicles belonging to service members between Oct. 4, 2014 and April 26, 2019.

Under the proposed settlement, which was filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, United Tows must pay Mekete $20,000. The settlement must be approved by the court.

The four other service members will share an additional $20,000 from United Tows, and the company will pay a $10,000 civil penalty to the U.S. Treasury.

I grew up in Cleveland, and I’ve been an Indians (soon-to-be Guardians) fan since 1972.

I saw Graig Nettles and Chris Chambliss play for them before they were disastrously traded to the Yankees for a bunch of stiffs.

While Cleveland is far and away a Browns town, the Indians are a big part of the city’s identity, so to see the Tribe retired at the end of this season will be sad.

But there’s also the question of their name. To me, “Indians” is not as offensive as Redskins, but it’s only slightly better. Plus the story of how they were named “Indians” is less then flattering.

Some have tried arguing that native Americans don’t mind the name “Indians,” “Redskins,” “Chiefs,” etc, but naming a team after indigenous peoples who were the target of genocide campaigns is pretty eff’d up.

So “Guardians” will take some getting used to, but as Tom Hanks said in the video officially announcing the name change, “It’s always been Cleveland that’s the best part of our name.”

They did the right thing. Finally.

A new AP-NORC poll of American adults who have not yet received a vaccine finds 35% say they probably will not, and 45% say they definitely will not.

Just 3% say they definitely will get the shots, though another 16% say they probably will.

Key takeaway: “What’s more, 64% of unvaccinated Americans have little to no confidence the shots are effective against variants — including the delta variant that officials say is responsible for 83% of new cases in the U.S. — despite evidence that they offer strong protection.”

Was curious and thus checked when/if the high school I went to dropped their Indian chief mascot*. Turns out they did so in 2004, and adopted a “Spartan” logo in 2018. They kept the name “Red Raiders” however.

* - 10% of the student body is indigenous peoples. So I expected that they would have dropped it sooner rather than later.
