Republicans spent $300 million on the recall in California. “Congratulations you fucking donkeys.”
Correction: $300 million was the total spent on the recall. Most picked up by taxpayers. But since the recall was initiated by Republicans, again I say “Congratulations you fucking donkeys.”

Another shoe drops in the Murdaugh mysteries:
The S.C. Law Enforcement Division opened an investigation into the 2018 death of the Murdaugh family’s maid —the agency’s fifth investigation related to the Murdaugh family — after receiving a request from the Hampton County coroner, an agency release said Wednesday afternoon…
“On the death certificate the manner of death was ruled ‘Natural,’ which is inconsistent with injuries sustained in a trip and fall incident,” the coroner wrote. “In light of the inconsistencies noted above, I feel that it is prudent to pursue an investigation into Gloria Satterfield’s death.”

Road Trip 2021: Plague Survival
Left town Monday with my wife and our two adult kids to visit family in Billings, MT, Spokane, WA and Portland, OR. Stopped in Jackson, WY this afternoon and my wife and I walked into a line at the hotel reservation desk. We were the only people masked (wife w/ cloth mask, me w/ 3M N95 particle mask) until a guy got in line behind us and thanked us for being masked. He had forgotten his and was hoping the hotel had some on hand (they did). Hearing this, the people in front of us also thanked us and said that they had forgotten to put their masks on (which they then did).
We basically shamed six people into masking up with the help of that guy who thanked us…lol!
Wiped down room contents with 99% isopropyl (brought two quarts) to decontaminate things. One big reason is that two of the people we are visiting are my wife’s 96 & 97 year old uncles and we want to have a safe visit with them. Everyone on our trip is vaccinated so it’s just a matter of evading crazy, anti-vax/anti-mask zombies.
Interesting note: Idaho Falls has “HIRING” on many of their restaurant signs but only one had a starting wage: $11/Hr. No wonder they aren’t getting workers, $11 an hour isn’t even ass-wiping money and they are risking their lives to earn it in that town.

It ruined his shot at the Presidency, but it showed the extent that power can pre-empt justice, and as far as I am concerned, Teddy badly compromised the Democratic party by his continued presence in the Senate (and subsequent failed runs for the Presidency)

How about “ignore the Republican Party?”
Twenty-six days before his 54th birthday, California voters gave Gov. Gavin Newsom the early gift of a second chance.
Their refusal Tuesday to remove him from office brings to an end a dramatic and disagreeable chapter in the state’s political history, though the clashes sparked by the recall election will surely persist into next year and beyond.
But while Newsom can rightly boast that a sizable majority of voters want him to finish the term to which he was elected in 2018, the election returns offer no such mandate for his style of governing.
The ever-present media framing: An overwhelming landslide for a Democrat is “you have to moderate or reach across the aisle” while a Republican with 50%+1 vote is a “mandate.”
The governor’s anti-recall campaign rarely mentioned his accomplishments. Instead, it relied on the political equivalent of a screaming security alarm, warning that voters should take a good look at the Republicans whose special election, the Democrat’s campaign insisted, amounted to attempted theft.

The only narrative the media is interested in pushing is the one I mentioned yesterday: “He got lucky.” The narrative they want to tell is that Newsom was recalled for good reasons, that the CA GQP called forth a referendum on his governorship, and in a fair race he would have lost on the merits. But then Larry Elder entered the race, he gave Newsom a boogeyman to run against rather than running on his record, and he won because people didn’t want the “scary black man” as their governor. So that the recall ends up being a net loss for CA Dems because the recall happened at all and Newsom wasn’t really tested on his record but on being better than the alternative.
Yeah, it’s a narrative that is totally at odds with reality and basically argues that the CA GQP had a valid case against Newsom and his administration, but it also allows the media to avoid admitting they spent weeks pumping up yet another Trump-favored candidate only to watch them get blown out of the water. Look for a similar narrative to play out here in VA in two months when Terry wins another term against the Trump-endorsed Youngkin.
Larry Elder would have just as scary as a white man.
re: #60 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
Larry Elder would have just as scary as a white man.
If Larry Elder had been a white man, running on things like opposition to the VRA/CRA and calling for reparations for slave owners, the media would have termed his statements “controversial” but continued to endorse him.
But because he’s black, they ignore all that to instead suggest that liberals are “hypocrites” for running against him rather than supporting him as the “first black governor of California.”

Why some kids are testing positive for COVID for weeks and even months in the delta surge (San Francisco Chronicle)
People who test positive for the coronavirus can continue to do so long after they are no longer contagious, especially if they are not vaccinated — a pandemic wrinkle magnified during the delta surge that has created some confusion and concern for parents of unvaccinated school-age children who have returned to Bay Area classrooms.
When an initial test comes back positive, federal and California health guidelines recommend staying home and isolating for 10 days. In cases involving schoolchildren, officials communicate with families on next steps to determine when the child is allowed to return to the classroom — but a subsequent negative test is not among the requirements.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS…30 MPH…45 KM/H

——————————
Flash Flood Watches are in effect along the central Gulf Coast from
portions of southeast Louisiana, across southern Mississippi and
Alabama, to the Florida Panhandle.
Meanwhile there are three tropical waves on the map.
Disturbance 1 is 500 miles WSW of the Cape Verde Islands, still moving west. It is expected to become a tropical depression within two days, and pass near the northern Lesser Antilles within five days or so. Later it may become a threat to the Southeast United States.
Disturbance 2 is several hundred miles SSE of the Outer Banks, moving northwest. It has a high chance to become a tropical cyclone within five days, and is a potential threat to the Outer Banks.
Disturbance 3 is a tropical wave now on the coast of Ghana. It should move off the coast within a day, and has a low chance of becoming a tropical cyclone. Regardless, the predicted track will carry the system over the Cape Verde Islands.
For example:
This one right here is one that a friend of mine swore up and down happened in a class he was in at SDSU in 1995.
Even though the Snopes article mentions it being passed on word of mouth from the 80s or earlier with it always being claimed the person was in a class or knew someone in a class where it happened.

This statement (the newspaper’s, not yours) is not accurate. If those are the guidelines, they are incomplete, referring to the minimum course of a positive. Wife and I are half-way through the 10-14 day initial isolation, and still fairly symptomatic. As well as I can determine, people in ICUs for weeks are treated as still infectious. As we approach the magic 14 days, wife and I are trying to get a better answer on re-surfacing. We are about to survey several of our scheduled doctors/dentist to see when they would feel comfortable going nose-to-nose with us. Our ophthalmologist is a genius and a secular saint, and I don’t want to be the one to kill him.

Pope Francis Not Too Worked Up Over Whether Joe Biden Eats Jesus Cookies (Wonkette)
Pope Francis today seemed to tell American Catholic leaders who want to ban Joe Biden from taking communion that they might want to cool their jets,or at least stop blowing so hard on their incense burners. Francis didn’t directly take a position on whether Biden should be denied the sacrament because of his filthy pro-choice views, but he did suggest it’s not bishops’ job to be mixing up politics with their pastoral duties.
While flying back to Rome from a visit to Bratislava, Slovakia, the Vatican correspondent from the US Jesuit magazine America asked Francis about the controversy over whether pro-choice political leaders should be allowed to eat Christ incarnate in the holy host and wine. Since Biden’s election, conservative Catholics have called, sometimes very publicly, for that to be a transubstantial issue in the Church.
Francis said that well of course abortion is “homicide,” because no, he’s never going to change on that, but also said bishops shouldn’t be doing churchy stuff with politics in mind:
“If we look at the history of the church, we can see that every time the bishops did not act like shepherds when dealing with a problem, they aligned themselves with political life, on political problems,” he said.

Shouting, tears and police: Bluffs school board meeting turns into anti-mask demonstration (Omaha World-Herald)
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds’s prohibition on schools requiring masks is under a temporary injunction by the federal courts. Protesters at the meeting want the school district to defy the federal government.
COUNCIL BLUFFS — A Council Bluffs Community Schools board meeting devolved into heated arguments about the district’s new mask mandate Tuesday, resulting in the cancellation of the rest of the meeting and police officers being called to the scene.
Beginning Wednesday, all district students, staff and visitors are expected to wear masks at school during school hours when physical distancing is not possible, according to a message Council Bluffs Schools Superintendent Vickie Murillo sent to staff and parents Tuesday morning.

And even though the Delta surge affect our infection rates here, hospitalization occupancy has not gotten above 80% of capacity. Unvaccinated people have a 51x higher hospitalization rate than the vaccinated, so our high vaccination rate is helping.
And compared to the big wave, this wave has not pushed the ICU capacity. The county still have many ICU beds available.

Perhaps I’m being too hard on the guy? Maybe he’s Iceland’s last virgin, and decided that it is better for his fellow Icelanders if he sacrificed himself to the local volcano gods in the hopes of ending this eruption?
But he climbed down… so maybe he got cold feet?
Hard to get cold feet on rocks that are probably a couple of hundred degrees F, though.

Bobbing for Boeberts!!!
Mainstream media continues to underestimate Trump’s threat. Republicans want us to worry more about the precedent Milley set rather than the precedent Trump set, which is that Republicans can cry “fraud” when they don’t win elections (even in fucking California) and those baseless claims can justify overturning the results.
Trump recently endorsed Mark Finchem for Arizona Secretary of State. Finchem promotes the Big Lie and tweeted just this month: “I am calling it. Between the preliminary audit results and the private canvass, I call on Arizona to decertify the election of 2020 and recall the electors. There is already enough evidence to show clear and convincing fraud. We have a duty to act.” Echoing Trump’s own repugnant words, Finchem has described the January 6 attack as “[w]hat happens when the people feel they have been ignored, and Congress refuses to acknowledge rampant fraud.” This man wants to control Arizona’s elections.
House Rep. Jody Hice from Georgia voted to overturn Biden’s Electoral College victory and because there were no real consequences for sedition, he’s running against Georgia’s current Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger with Trump’s full support.
Last week, Trump backed Kristina Karamo for Michigan Secretary of State. She insists Trump won Michigan, which he lost by more than 150,000 votes, and has appeared at Big Lie rallies with My Pillow CEO and local crackpot Mike Lindell.

I am feeling pessimistic: right now, the GOP is positioning states to be able to simply ignore any election results they don’t like and throw the Presidential vote to the individual states where they are guaranteed a majority regardless of how many votes are cast and where.
And that will be the end of democracy in America.

Soap? I use Purell when I am out of my house. I guess I would be reduced to a wet pile of tissue.
It is clear that the Trump plan for 2020 was to have enough closely contested states that they could disqualify results, leaving neither candidate with an EC majority, thus tossing it to the state legislatures.
But it failed because for starters, Trump got soundly beaten by a wide margin nationwide and a narrower margin in states he though he could carry like GA and AZ.
They have learned their lesson and are on route to pull that strategy off in 2024.
Juanita Jean weighs in on yet another conservative dying for her faith.
We’ve talked at length about QAnon adherents bending reality, believing wild conspiracy theories, being anti-vaxxers, anti-mask, anti-science, and anti-common sense. Most amazing about this phenomenon, though, is there absolute devotion to their delusion to the point of dying for it. To wit, I give you Veronica Wolski, a high profile QAnon advocate from Chicago, who publicly protested against masks, vaccines, and against all things not Trump and who died of COVID this week. Her dying is not the story, though; the story was that Lin Wood (yes, THAT Lin Wood) whipped up a QAnon protest last week in an attempt to force the hospital she was in to administer Ivermectin, the horse de-wormer, as treatment for COVID. He has now declared that the hospital, Amita Health Resurrection Medical Center, caused her death through…wait for it…malpractice. He’s also made the same claim against the hospitals where Herman Cain died and another right wing activist and GOP party operative Presley Stutts. Of course, Cain and Stutts died after being infected while not practicing normal masking and distancing protocols. In fact, it’s likely that Cain was infected at the Trump campaign rally in Tulsa.

Vaccination being offered to those 12 years and older krisinformation.se
The Public Health Agency of Sweden (“Folkhälsomyndigheten”) has decided to recommend vaccination against Covid-19 from the age of 12 years. The decision is based on the assessment that the benefits of vaccination outweigh the drawbacks.
Children run a significantly lower risk of severe Covid-19 than adults. But there are examples of children who have become seriously ill. It has mainly concerned the condition MIS-C (Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children) which means hyperinflammation with high fever and in some cases an effect on one or more organs in the body.
So far during the pandemic, more than 250 children under the age of 18 in Sweden have suffered from MIS-C.
According to the Public Health Agency, the vaccines currently approved from the age of 12 are safe and effective. To date, nearly 20 million children worldwide have received one of the vaccines. In the vast majority of cases, side effects are mild and transient. A few children have experienced side effects in the form of myocarditis, which is usually transient. However, you need to be aware of the risk and seek medical attention if you experience symptoms such as chest pain in the days following the vaccination, according to the Public Health Agency.
The Public Health Agency recommends that children be offered the vaccine in two doses and that vaccination begin in a coordinated manner throughout the country in early November.

‘Reasonable basis’ to believe crime against humanity committed in Philippines crackdown, say judges
The international criminal court has authorised a full investigation into the Philippine president’s “war on drugs”, a breakthrough for campaigners who say the decision brings families one step closer to justice.
The ICC said in a statement that, based on the information provided to judges, the so-called war on drugs appeared to be a “widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population”, which took place “pursuant to or in furtherance of a state policy”. Judges had approved a request to begin the investigation into the crime against humanity of murder, it said.
Duterte rose to power promising a merciless crackdown that would rid the country of drugs. On the campaign trail he once said that there would be so many bodies dumped in Manila Bay that fish would grow fat from feeding on them. Since his election in 2016, between 12,000 and 30,000 civilians are estimated to have been killed in connection with anti-drugs operations, according to data cited by the ICC.

In CNN’s exit poll, nearly half of the Hispanic men surveyed and nearly a quarter of the Black men voted to support the recall. The largest difference between men and women of any racial group was between Black men and Black women.Even if these numbers are later adjusted, the warning must still be registered.
For many of these men, saying Republicans are racist or attract racists or abide racists isn’t enough.
For one thing, never underestimate the communion among men, regardless of race. Men have privileges in society, and some are drawn to policies that elevate their privileges.
For instance, many Black and Hispanic men oppose abortion.
Some men liked the bravado of Donald Trump and chafed at the rise of the #MeToo movement. Some simply see trans women as men in dresses and want to carry guns wherever they want. The question for Democrats is how do they lure some of these men back without catering to the patriarchy. From a position of principle, the party can’t really appeal to them; it must seek to change them.

What’s that about any organization eventually becoming a grift:
The CCP, which continues to grow and now has some 95 million members (around 6.5% of the population), has gradually transformed itself into a ‘white-collar’ organisation. In the early 2000s, then President Jiang Zemin lifted the ban on recruiting entrepreneurs from the private sector, previously been seen as class enemies, so that the CCP would no longer represent only the ‘revolutionary’ classes — workers, peasants and the military — but also the country’s ‘advanced productive forces’.
The selected businessmen and women become members of the political elite, ensuring that their businesses are at least partially protected from predatory officials. Their enrolment into the CCP has accelerated under President Xi Jinping (from 2013 onwards), with the aim of forming ‘a group of individuals from the business world who are determined to march with the Party’ (2).
As a result, the CCP has rapidly become more and more elitist. In 2010 ‘professionals and managers’ with higher education qualifications already equalled peasants and workers in number. Ten years later, they have overtaken them, making up 50% of the membership, compared to less than 35% of workers and peasants (3).
Well, that’s a novel (and evil) approach.
Virginia’s Dominion Energy wanted to build a pipeline for fracked natural gas from West Virginia to the coast.
One town stood in the way opposing it: Union Hill, Virginia, a historically Black town settled by enslaved people after the Civil War.
The townspeople insisted that Dominion is practising “environmental racism”: That is, the coast gets the benefits of the gas and the town gets all the destruction and pollution.
Dominion’s solution? Insist the town is mostly white, so they can’t be racists.
A historically Black town stood in the way of a pipeline - so developers claimed it was mostly white (The Guardian)
Utilizing a 2017 report from federal regulators, the company used census data to claim that the facility wouldn’t disproportionately impact Black, low-income areas.
That finding contradicted the lived experience of most locals. As Chad Oba, who is white and the head of local environmental group Friends of Buckingham county, put it: “I’ve lived here for 35 years […] I know who my neighbors are. I know that I live in a mostly African American community.”
Dr Lakshmi Fjord, a visiting scholar at the University of Virginia’s anthropology department, organized a door-to-door survey in Union Hill, reaching three-quarters of households within a mile of the compressor’s proposed site. Fjord’s survey found that just 17% of residents self-identified as white, while nearly two-thirds were Black.

But while Newsom can rightly boast that a sizable majority of voters want him to finish the term to which he was elected in 2018, the election returns offer no such mandate for his style of governing.
The governor’s anti-recall campaign rarely mentioned his accomplishments. Instead, it relied on the political equivalent of a screaming security alarm, warning that voters should take a good look at the Republicans whose special election, the Democrat’s campaign insisted, amounted to attempted theft.

The matrix is the classical Mass Casualties triage formula the Army has used since before Viet Nam. It might have been developed after the Texas City ammonium nitrate explosion in 1947. There is one funny difference—in Idaho “black” is “expectant”. That means you’re going to have a baby. In a military triage, you were “expected”—to die.

re: #175 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷
State of Idaho fucks around, finds out. Details at the top of the hour.
A very interesting work around:
Kloosterboer and Alaska Reefer say they comply with the Jones Act. The Jones Act requires that vessels carrying goods between two U.S. points be American-made and American-flagged. The companies use foreign-flagged vessels. But they say they meet a Jones Act exemption because the seafood travels briefly by rail in Canada.
At issue is the rail line used to meet that exemption.
In those years, the companies complied with the Jones Act by using the New Brunswick Southern Railway to transport their seafood in Canada, a journey of more than 30 miles, the federal response says. But in 2012, the companies “radically” altered the movement of the seafood because they believed using the New Brunswick railway was too expensive, the federal response says.
Instead of using the established New Brunswick railway and moving product from one destination to another using a “through route,” the companies decided to use “a specially-built mini-railtrack, approximately 100 feet in length, that goes nowhere,” the federal government argues.
That rail line is called Bayside Canadian Railway. The seafood is loaded into trucks that travel on a flat rail car, back and forth on the track, for a total of 200 feet. It’s then driven into the U.S.

Yikes.
I worked in a legal office in the 14th Circuit up until a couple of weeks ago (voluntarily left the job). The office had some involvement in the boat crash case, and everyone in the legal business in that part of SC knows the Murdaughs.
I read the transcripts of the depositions of the survivors and I have to say, my first reaction after the shootings was surprise that whoever took out lil’ Paulie Boat-Murder and his mom, didn’t try to get dad too. That kid was sociopathic garbage with at least two dead bodies tied to his name before he was 25, and I don’t think he got that way in *spite* of his parents. It didn’t escape my notice that nobody seemed really upset at the loss after the first round of shootings.
…After reading the details of the boat wreck, I certainly wasn’t.
The remaining son, as far as I can tell, isn’t as outright bad as his dead brother. I overheard that he got kicked out of school for cheating, but he hasn’t been directly implicated in any killings, so he’s got that going for him. Except of course for having a father who would allow his son to be orphaned and terrorized by the idea of assassins on the loose, in order to commit insurance fraud…

Is it really unethical or a creative use of the law? The fish were on a railcar traveling in Canada. The procedure was OK when the trip was 30 miles and not OK for a 100 foot trip?
Just heard a statistic that 1 out of 7 people have lost a friend since last year because they would not get vaccinated and it is the vaccinated person who ended the friendship.

As for ending friendships over vaccinations, I suppose that would depend on why. I certainly wouldn’t want anyone in my circle of friends who was pushing antivaxxer nonsense. I also (to the extent possible in Conservatopia) try to stay away from people.

Yes, it is. A lot of business people are entirely unethical, and this is one of those cases.
They know what they did is wrong.
The question is whether it is illegal.
That goes back to the previous question of why a thirty-mile trip is legal and a two hundred foot trip is not.
IANAL but I don’t think the Jones Act specifies how long a railway has to be, only that a foreign-flagged ship cannot travel between two US ports.
