Hey, I have a thought.

If the progressive caucus holds firm and doesn’t vote for it, what’s the over/under on McCarthy releasing X number of his caucus to make up the numbers so it passes anyway?

Fight! Fight! The American Jesuits are going after Eternal Word Television Network, home of all sorts of anti-Pope Francis nutbars.

Pope Francis made headlines last week when he criticized those who attack his papacy in the media, calling the attacks “the work of the devil.” The comment was widely interpreted to be a reference to EWTN, the largest Catholic television network in the world, which has given a platform to some of the pope’s most vocal English-speaking critics.

*sniiiiiip*

Mother Angelica’s legacy at EWTN has been ensured by a cadre of wealthy conservative donors, as National Catholic Reporter editor in chief Heidi Schlumpf documented in a 2019 investigative series about EWTN, but it continues most visibly through Mother Angelica’s protégé and biographer, EWTN anchor Raymond Arroyo, who hosts the weekly show “The World Over.”He also appears regularly on Laura Ingraham’s Fox News show, occasionally filling in as host.

Mr. Arroyo’s news commentary, like Mother Angelica’s, is critical of any “liberal” elements of the church and is often presented as the viewpoint of a “true” Catholic, delivered with much of the same snark Mother Angelica was lauded for by her fans. In a pontificate focused on implementing the decisions of Vatican II and one that has often prioritized the pastoral and evangelical over the doctrinal, Mr. Arroyo’s antipathy has, unsurprisingly, centered on Pope Francis.

Mr. Arroyo’s recurring guests on the show have included prominent Francis critics, including Cardinal Raymond Burke, who co-signed a list of “dubia” about Pope Francis’ openness to allowing divorced and remarried Catholics to receive Communion in some cases, and Cardinal Gerhard Müller, the former head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, who was not renewed for another term by Pope Francis in 2017. Two years later, Cardinal Müller published a “manifesto of faith” in the EWTN-owned Catholic News Agency and other outlets that have been critical of the pope, arguing against Francis’ teaching on Communion for the divorced and remarried.

In 2018, the former apostolic nuncio to the United States, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, released a (since largely discredited) bombshell document, published by Catholic News Agency and other media outlets critical of Pope Francis, alleging that the pope had mishandled abuse by former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick and calling on the pope to resign. Soon after, Cardinal Müller appeared on Mr. Arroyo’s show, urging the pope to “reconcile” with Archbishop Viganò.

Other guests on Mr. Arroyo’s show have included Joseph Shaw, the president of the U.K. Latin Mass Society, who signed a “formal correction” of the pope concerning his teachings on Communion for the divorced and remarried, and Alexander Tschugguel, who stole indigenous Amazonian statues of pregnant women during the Amazon synod and threw them into the Tiber River, falsely alleging they were Andean idols.

americamagazine.org

More before and after, obviously. And of course the Jesuits are going to protect “their Pope.” That said, EWTN is crazycakes.

“Now, as far as I know, we had not previously understood the Trump crowd on the mall and on the Capitol grounds as early as the 9:00 a.m. hour was already fighting with police to the point of overwhelming them,” she noted, playing clips from the recordings. …”

Progressives: “We’re going to need at least a $10T bill to get all the president’s priorities passed.”

“Moderates: “Look, we can’t support a bill that large, even if it would be over a 10 year period.”

P: “Alright, we’re willing to bring it down to $6T.”

“M”: “Look, we’ll make a deal: Take all the ‘hard’ infrastructure out and wrap that up in a $1.5T bill that we can get Republicans to support, and we’ll pass the remaining $3.5T on a reconciliation vote.”

P: “Agreed, but only if both bills move forward at the same time.”

“M”: “Hey, we can’t do that, because the Repubs will oppose the ‘bipartisan’ bill unless it can move forward unhindered.”

P: “Okay, there’s no requirement that the reconciliation bill pass first before we vote on the ‘bipartisan’ bill.”

“M”: “Awesome, now pass the ‘bipartisan’ bill and we’ll talk about the reconciliation bill next year.”

P: “THAT WASN’T THE AGREEMENT!”

“M”: “Well I’m sorry, but we can’t talk about reconciliation until the ‘bipartisan’ bill signed. Also, we’re bringing down the price tag on the reconciliation bill down to $1.5T and we might not even support that.”

P: “FUCK THIS, WE WON’T VOTE FOR YOUR DAMNED ‘BIPARTISAN’ BILL!”

Conservatives haven’t changed. This would be considered a suitable diet for pulling yourself up by your bootstraps, if you’re poor. Conservatives have had recurrent fantasies about feeding poor people glop or sludge (think Joe Arpaio’s culinary “inventions”) to encourage them to be better people, or to simply starve.

Not all websites. Many websites are fine (like LGF.) Google’s own websites are fine.

But there are a smattering of websites I usually visit, such as Wikipedia, which now Chrome thinks is too dangerous for me to visit. The cert is rejected.

I’m wondering if some severs have been installed with software that expects something from my old iMac that it just can’t deliver?

If a genie gave Democrats three wishes they would negotiate it down to one, and then trade it in for something they think Republicans would like.

The aggravating part is that we’re told by other Dems that if we decide to instead sit on that wish or (Zod forbid) use it for something that helps more than just a wealthy few, then we’re just helping the Republicans anyway so the only thing that can possibly do any “good” for us is to give the Republicans what they want.

re: #57 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Chrome is apparently known for this problem.

A couple of areas that you may want to verify -
1. Third party extensions
A number reportedly have caused this issue.
“Check each extension one at a time by disabling it and then attempting to load the page. If one of your extensions seems to be triggering the error, you can then try uninstalling it completely.”

2. Anti-Virus software
Usually done by disabling the anti-virus software and the re-accessing the website through a forced refresh.

3. Change the DNS server.
Sometimes things are cached or corrupted on a dns server. Changing can help. (Make sure to record your setting before you change them.)

4. Other chrome setting, particularly privacy/security
I’m keeping this generic since it has been a while since I have looked at them.

5. Double check system time :)

6. Use Firefox until you figure this out? :)

Interestingly, I use firefox for most browsing and have lots of adblock and other privacy set up on it. However, when something demands adblock be off, I have my chrome settings for that. And use it instead.

I was going to suggest 5.

About 20 years ago, I did a lot of network programming for security systems. And there are a lot of possible points of failure. Before even considering how badly the network errors are implemented and diagnostic messages written.

Just googling “Net::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID” brought back lots of memories and a very long checklist of possible problems.

The memories generally involved ordering the error possibility list on the basis of likelihood of each thing really being the problem. (Good rule of thumb - If no one else is having that problem, it’s not as likely to be causing your problem.)

Most amusing problem I had with a Federal agency I contracted with… They kept having server connectivity problems. The software and server configurations were very tightly controlled and changes well documented and reviewed.

Well except for the security group. They had a security program that you could change server configurations on the fly from a program screen. And they did. Without telling anyone. Until things other than what they were responsible for, stopped working. Which, for a while, happened about every day.

I patiently helped the agency network people debug each server issue. Eventually, the network folks realized that they had an administrative rather than technical issue.

She’s still promising a vote tomorrow morning, but there’s no clear sign of where she’s going to get the votes. The progressive caucus held firm all day today and is likely going to be even less hospitable tomorrow to coercion. By contrast, there’s already “moderates” in the House who’ve begun to waver in their insistence upon the BIF moving forward before the BBA is brought to a vote. And with McCarthy whipping against the BIF, the idea of dozens of House Repubs saving this bill is remote, at least not without some backroom skullduggery.

Thanks. But I spotted part of the problem, I think.

One of the websites I was trying to access with Chrome said the root cert was expired.

So I go to Keychain Access, turn on the ability to look at expired certs, and sure enough it is expired.

Here’s the question though - how to delete this expired cert? Keychain Access only lets you delete non-root certs. When I check out the Apple Support pages, someone did post a command-line work around, but others warn that deleting root certs will mess up my Mac system.

Apparently the “System Roots” keychain is something that mere mortals should not mess with.

Now Chrome, if I turn off safe mode, will let me proceed to the blocked websites once I jump through their warning page. BUT CHROME WON’T LET ME PROCEED TO WIKIPEDIA IF WITH SAVE MODES TURNED OFF.

That’s just nuts.

I’m using Firefox to type this in, though Chrome works fine with LGF.

As near as I can tell, Firefox will ignore the base root cert (being expired) if the leaf certs (if I get that term correct) are ok.

That is the problem I have in Chrome, it appears. The System Root cert is expired even though the site-specific cert is not expired. Chrome (even with safe mode turned off) won’t ignore the expiry of the System Root cert in OSX, while Firefox (and Apple’s own Safari) will.

Which means Google must think they are going to be more secure than Apple for Apple platforms?

No, I’m putting the focus squarely on them because they are the ones who’ve allowed this farce to go on as long as it has. It’s been nothing but “compromise” and empty promises since the spring, with Kevin and Mitch laughing the whole way. Pelosi has known for days that the progressive caucus opposed moving the BIF forward without a Senate vote on the BBBA. If there is a “rebellion,” it is because she has given progressives no other choice but to “rebel.”

Amazing— David Brooks is supportive of the total Biden infrastructure agenda:

Read again Robert Kagan’s foreboding Washington Post essay on how close we are to a democratic disaster. He’s talking about a group of people so enraged by a lack of respect that they are willing to risk death by Covid if they get to stick a middle finger in the air against those who they think look down on them. They are willing to torch our institutions because they are so resentful against the people who run them.

The Democratic spending bills are economic packages that serve moral and cultural purposes. They should be measured by their cultural impact, not merely by some wonky analysis. In real, tangible ways, they would redistribute dignity back downward. They would support hundreds of thousands of jobs for home health care workers, child care workers, construction workers, metal workers, supply chain workers. They would ease the indignity millions of parents face having to raise their children in poverty.

It’s so frustrating - why Chrome stops me from going to some websites.

I think there’s a very low-level problem with the latest version of Chromium (what Chrome and Edge are built on). Apparently version 94.blahblah is passing special characters with headers, it’s causing problems with certain websites and it manifests in various ways. This is just my observation in having to deal with one of those low level website problems where the workaround is “use something that is not the current versions of Chrome or Edge or Firefox or Safari. Or something else.”

Thanks.

What I did discover is that one cert in System Root in Keychain expired on the 30th (today still here), and that one caused problems with a lot of websites. I had to set my Mac to “always trust” that cert even though it is expired.

That solved the Wikipedia problem.

But there still are some websites for which I am having problems, and there are no other certs I have that expired today (or this week.) So the mystery remains.

From the wiki:

Allegations of inflated death counts

In August 2020, President Donald Trump retweeted a conspiracy theory alleging that COVID-19 deaths are systematically overcounted, and that only 6% of the reported deaths in the United States were actually from the disease.[217] This 6% number is based on only counting death certificates where COVID-19 is the sole condition listed. The lead mortality statistician at the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics said that those death certificates likely did not include all the steps that led to the death and thus were incomplete. The CDC collects data based on case surveillance, vital records, and excess deaths.[218] A factcheck.org article on the issue reported that while 6% of the death certificates included COVID-19 exclusively as the cause of death and 94% had additional conditions that contributed to it, COVID-19 was listed as the underlying cause of death in 92% of them, as it may directly cause other severe conditions such as pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome.[219] In mid-October 2020, the number of deaths from COVID-19 in the United States was reported at 218,511 (CDC), 219,681 (Johns Hopkins University) and 219,541 (The New York Times).

Great to hear that you’ve got a handle on the wiki issue .

Just was doing a quick scan on chrome 94 and certificate issues. I do not run Apple so cannot say how things interact, though.

It looks like chrome had three updates in September 13th, 21st and 26th. And three more in August. If it was Windoz, I would look for library incompatibilities in assorted software. The original 94 update (Sept 21st) reportedly included a major update to SSL Certificate handling.

2. Although I wouldn’t recommend this… I was also wondering, since you apparently cannot proceed and ignore the error, if you could force acceptance of a specific website by explicitly whitelisting it through settings->Privacy and Security-> (Advanced) Insecure content.

I spent some time in Israel many years ago. I knew the head of their EPA at the time. He still had relatives in Russia. He mentioned that one time in the 1970’s on an official visit he went to visit them.

He told this story…

They invited him to stay for dinner, promising a really great treat. And the relatives kept alluding to this great treat coming shortly.

Finally dinner time arrived. And when it was time for the main course everybody turned to watch him, while he looked to the kitchen expectantly. Sure enough, the mother came out the kitchen with a big and very proud grin on her face bearing a huge platter of… steaming potatoes.

The entire family was crestfallen when he did not look suitably impressed. They told him “But we were told that in Israel, potatoes are as rare as oranges.”

He pointed out that this was true. But that Israel raises oranges.

I knew another family that immigrated from Russia in the early 1970s. The father was a senior engineer. The mother, an MD. They had been quite well situated in Russia.

But in Israel, they did not speak the language fluently. They did not have the many years of contacts. And they were not equipped to compete with professional Israeli peers. And they were in their late 50s at that point.

Further they knew all this and decided to move to Israel anyway. Simply to give their daughter a better life with better opportunities. They were some of the bravest folks, in their own quiet way, that I have met.

Changing Chrome settings would not resolve the issue.

Yes, I did update Chrome on the 30th.

And it turns out the 30th was the expiry date for one of the System Root certs.

I had to use the Mac operating system utility to tell the Mac to always trust this cert even though it has expired.

That worked for Wikipedia and some other websites in Chrome, all the sites using certs that attached to the System Root cert.

There are still some websites that Chrome flags that I cannot figure out.

There’s also the reality that with so many Americans either without health insurance or without the means to afford insurance bills, there’s a lot of cases of doctors finding out that patients with COVID symptoms also had pre-existing health problems that were going untreated.

But that’s more complicated than the talking point which anti-vaxxers go with, which is that nobody who’s “healthy” is dying from COVID and that anybody who does die was already dying of something else. Red state governors have gone so far as to weaponize this by forcing their own departments of health to classify COVID deaths as things like “pneumonia” or “respiratory failure.”

I don’t know if I’d say they are succeeding yet. They are using the last vestiges of their power to enforce their restrictive and anti-American agenda. It remains to be seen if their ace in the hole, the unfairly stacked Supreme Court, will allow these “wins” to stand. The bigger problem is that they are setting up to continue this practice by preventing Americans from voting them out, because that’s “not fair”. Because apparently, being broadly unpopular across most of the country isn’t supposed to translate to getting your ass handed to you in elections, for some reason they have yet to clarify.

I’ve had two illnesses since being vaccinated- a bad cold when I moved and a bug I caught when I went to NE in August but I’ve felt fine after my three shots (got the booster due to my heart condition and I feel fine nearly 48 hours later.)

Katie Porter’s epic beatdown of Kyrsten Sinema reveals an important truth

Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) just delivered a sharp dressing down to Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) that neatly crystallizes this contrast. While many progressives are hammering Sinema, Porter’s broadside captures something essential about what we’re seeing from Sinema, and by extension, about the crossroads that Democrats now face.

That essential point is this: Public servants should feel a basic obligation to level with the voters who granted them the privilege of being their representatives. While more may be happening in private talks than we know, all signs are that Sinema’s caginess is edging toward a level of deceptiveness that borders on betrayal of public duty.

AFAIK, Manchin and Sinema have voted for all Biden nominees, with the sole exception of Manchin rejecting Neera Tanden because she posted mean tweets about his daughter (so not a political objection — but a personal one). It’s very likely they would support his nominee.

Neither are on the Judiciary committee either for that matter. I don’t think it’s a concern honestly. And frankly, I think Manchin is more reasonable than he’s given credit for. I never thought he would have voted to remove Trump twice and as you get at, he’s been a steady vote for Biden nominees. He’s voted far more in line with the Democratic position since 2018 than he hasn’t. He’s not my favorite but I do disagree with those who label him a DINO when he’s got a tough thing in WV representing a state where every county voted for TFG twice I believe.

SInema less so but I kinda get some of her caution given it’s by no means a given that AZ is the next Virginia or Colorado and I dealt with weird shit from Jim Webb when we like AZ finally started to send Democrats state wide. I disagree with the moderates. I’m a liberal after all but I also disagree with the framing of them as monsters who oppose progress in Biden’s proposed agenda.

West Virginia is losing a congressional seat to redistricting, which means a guaranteed loss of one republican. They would be wise to eliminate her district.

It’s going to be interesting to see who he chooses. I know there was a lot of stressing about Breyer this summer but frankly I’m fine with Biden’s lower level judges getting confirmed first which will allow the ones he will consider for SCOTUS to establish themselves on the judiciary. Just got done reading a bio on one of my favorite SCOTUS members, Justice Brennan and I read about the GIdeon case earlier in the summer. I find the judiciary fascinating even though 99% other people find it boring. It’s a lot more about personalities than people think despite Roberts wanting to act like they’re impartial umpires. Alito’s tantrums over the years show that they’re anything but.

Same thing with Kentucky. It use to be all democratic except for Eastern Kentucky, which had been pro union in the Civil War, and state government remained mostly in Democratic control until just a few years ago. That’s definitely the decline of the coal mines and the power of the UMWA as a power at work. Same reason why my grandparents’ home county of Cambria in Pennsylvania has sadly gone from a county that soundly rejected Reagan and Reaganism to now embracing Trump and Trumpism. Just to show how brainwashed these TexAssHoles are!

“God’s Will Is Being Thwarted.” Even in Solid Republican Counties, Hard-Liners Seek More Partisan Control of Elections.

The nonpartisan elections administrator in the staunchly Republican Hood County, just an hour southwest of Fort Worth, oversaw an election in which Trump got some 81% of the vote. It was among the former president’s larger margins of victory in Texas, which also went for him.

Yet over the past 10 months, Carew’s work has come under persistent attack from hard-line Republicans. They allege disloyalty and liberal bias at the root of her actions, from the time she denied a reporter with the fervently pro-Trump network One America News entrance to a training that was not open to the public to accusations, disputed by the Texas secretary of state’s office, that she is violating state law by using electronic machines that randomly number ballots.

Viewing her decisions as a litmus test of her loyalty to the Republican Party, they have demanded that Carew be fired or her position abolished and her duties transferred to an elected county clerk who has used social media to promote baseless allegations of widespread election fraud.

propublica.org

Once again proving that…

I think Nixon first took advantage of how much they hated the Civil Rights and Antiwar movement, then Reagan played to their patriotism even though the real Ronnie pretended to be a combat vet, and Trump just sped it up. Now tbh I’m hopeful because I remember LBJ said the South was lost for a generation. He was off tbh I think the more populated South is winnable in the long run and has more EVs.

IF the CCC housing is a bunch of people sharing tents and a common canteen and then working as groups under supervision then you get some of the effects.

Edit:
It’s interesting how many bits of WPA and CCC construction you find about still. More than one state park in New York has stairs, trails, etc. that were built in that time period and are still intact.

They were great kids, and I got to see someone (their female lead) use the Pythagorean theorem to find the centerline of a shingle job. It’s a great way for kids to scrounge money for college.

Noises linked to mysterious injuries among US diplomats in Cuba were most likely caused by crickets — not microwave weapons — according to a declassified scientific review commissioned by the US State Department and obtained by BuzzFeed News.

The State Department report was written by the JASON advisory group, an elite scientific board that has reviewed US national security concerns since the Cold War. It was completed in November of 2018, two years after dozens of US diplomats in Cuba and their families reported hearing buzzing noises and then experiencing puzzling neurological injuries, including pain, vertigo, and difficulty concentrating.

The report, obtained by BuzzFeed News via a Freedom of Information Act request, was originally classified as “secret.” It concluded that the sounds accompanying at least eight of the original 21 Havana syndrome incidents were “most likely” caused by insects. That same scientific review also judged it “highly unlikely” that microwaves or ultrasound beams — now widely proposed by US government officials to explain the injuries — were involved in the incidents. And though the report didn’t definitively conclude what caused the injuries themselves, it found that “psychogenic” mass psychology effects may have played a role.

“…Williams: There are a few strands. The most ascendant one right now seems to be critical theory, which was born in France in the ’60s and migrated to American universities. It has birthed all of these academic centers—gender studies, anti-colonialism, African American studies. It has some core tenets: There’s no such thing as truth in politics; it’s all about narratives and power, and we can’t know truth, fundamentally. There’s no such thing as natural rights; politics is making sure discrete identity groups, especially the ones who’ve been oppressed over time, now have an opportunity to express themselves.

That means deconstructing and disrupting what was the dominant narrative for a long time, which was the Founders’ regime of natural rights. One of the institutional vehicles for it was the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which was meant to fulfill the promise of the Declaration of Independence for Black Americans coming out of segregation. But the courts and administrative agencies quickly turned against the color-blind, equal-opportunity vision of the founding and toward affirmative action—this calculation of current oppressor or past oppressor, and the pursuit of equity and social justice. Now this seems to mean that we’re really not going to be where we need to be until all groups are equally represented and have the same outcomes for, say, home ownership, wealth, the proportion of CEOs, or members of Congress. That seems to be the goal of wokeism.

What a load of horseshit.

“…Williams: A true regime of nondiscrimination is when the state cannot disadvantage or advantage any group based on their skin color or ethnicity. That’s the original promise of the Declaration of Independence. It is, in many ways, a color-blind Constitution.

The counter from the left is that there’s systemic racism that has built up over years by certain legal systems. I would have to see some real proof of that. The main evidence seems to be that there are disparate results, thus there’s systemic racism.”

When a political party is made up of people who reject reality, they’ll elect a lot of people who are so stupid you’ll wonder how they manage to tie their shoes. At this point you have to at least pretend to be stupid or crazy and lie about the 2020 election to be a Republican in good standing.

Money magazine in the early 90’s did a whole special issue on racism. As you might guess by the name of the magazine, it’s a very conservative, finance-oriented publication.

They had an article about mortgages, one about small-business financing, one about blue-collar wages and union membership… they proved, mathematically, all with right-wing measurements, how much of the black/white wealth disparity is externally created, by explicit government policy, completely divorced from any variation in intelligence, talent, work ethic, etc.
