WATCH: Police Hold News Conference on Waukesha Parade Incident

Right wing trolls were very excited last night on Twitter; violence always gets them lathered up and raving, especially when a black person is identified as the suspect. (And by the way, I suspect someone on the police force leaked this info to right wing propagandists like Jack Posobiec last night.)

I have a Cessna 182 fueled and ready just a few minutes away. I could kick the door open, spray the fire extinguisher toward the nutters, and scatter some hastily printed leaflets informing them that they had just been Covid vaxxed. It would be a great joke. Unfortunately, the FAA would not be amused so I will have to restrain the impulse and save the plan for some other time.

There’s a dairy farm not far from here on a winding two lane. It sits in what they call a “kettle” around here, a small valley like a cook kettle. They have a large slurry tank.
In the summer if there is an air inversion or high humidity for a number of days and no breezes, it is unbelievable to me the farm owner can actually live there. Makes your eyes water and almost burns your nostrils.

The traditional “where were you?” story for this day. This is less common now, especially from people who already had some inkling of politics and history at the time.

I was 14 at the time and already developing an interest in the news and politics. Unlike most people my age, I did not find out at school. I was at home after a trip to the dentist. My mom was watching one of those godawful soap operas with the oppressive organ music. I ignored it until a news bulletin came on. It didn’t seem so bad at first, JFK had been wounded during a trip to Dallas. I thought it probably wouldn’t be serious, and he would be up joking about it in a couple of days.
I kept watching. The bulletins became more frequent and more alarming, then the network (CBS) went to solid coverage.
The part I remember most is Walter Cronkite making a visible effort to control himself as he made the now-famous announcement that President Kennedy had died. Walter was obviously aware that his every word, grimace, and breath would be of historic significance for centuries to come.

Of course not. The really rare bits - the ram & cpu - are certainly salvageable. If I can get a different Sun, perhaps the IPX lunch box sized machine, I can put them to work still, so it’s not quite as total a loss as it could be. But really…

clan’s coming to visit

bro and his in-country fam from philly will be staying at dangermom’s
Sis coming down from NC will stay with us (4 years ago she lived with us for 2 years)

thursday niece by zoom from outside tel aviv

i’ve got a huge pot of unstuffed cabbage on the stove for tonight (the first night’s) dinner.

way easier than stuffing cabbage leaves

recipe, for those interested

it’s all ad hoc

2-3 onions, slice or dice
2# ground beef, turkey or chicken
2 peeled apples, diced
28 oz can crushed tomatoes
3# green cabbage, shredded
1 tbsp salt
1 tsp pepper
⅓ c lemon juice
¼ c brown sugar
¼ c honey
¼ - ½ c raisins
separately cooked rice
Directions:

In a large pot stock pot on just over medium heat, brown onions in all the meat till meat is not pink - maybe 15 minutes or so
Stir in tomatoes, salt and pepper
Reduce heat to just under medium and simmer 20 minutes
After 20 minutes, add apples, cabbage, lemon juice, sugar, honey and raisins.
Reduce heat to just above low and cook until cabbage is soft - about 1 ½ - 2+ hours

Best to serve over rice or egg noodles.
Don’t add rice to the pot. It’ll suck up all the juice

A salad seems like over kill
Maybe a cucumber / carrot concoction

With the rice, potatoes aren’t necessary either.
We do dip a good rye bread.

Absolutely. But when the GOP tries to steal the 2024 election and install Trump as dictator, we are going to need all the help we can get before going back to arguing policy. It should’ve been packed in styrofoam, but that’s expensive and I don’t know how many shippers actually keep loose pieces of styrofoam on hand.

The UPS shop in Madison, in another lifetime, had a foam injection machine and, while expensive, it was a joy shipping fragile computers via them. I shipped a DEC VAXStation 4000 internationally with no damage because of them. SMDH.

So Hayes and Goldberg just now discovered that Tucker is a dangerous propagandist? Why didn’t they quit FOX News when the insurrection happened? They know that it was Fox News hosts which helped to instigate January 6th.

Apparently Carlson’s propaganda documentary claiming January 6 was a false flag operation was the final straw. Maybe they finally decided they wanted to go down in history as opponents, rather than enablers, of the rise of Fascist America. If they have an angle, I don’t know what it could be; they are going to be labeled as traitors to the fascist right.

Absolutely. But when the GOP tries to steal the 2024 election and install Trump as dictator, we are going to need all the help we can get before going back to arguing policy. Its kind of like allying ourselves with the Soviet Union to defeat the Third Reich, even though the Soviets had been helping the Nazis before they were attacked in 1941.

The Ghost of a Flea  Nov 22, 2021 • 1:07:10pm

As I said about Brooks the other day…the whole commentary class is trash and should be criticized for being fundamentally unserious, but on top of that they laid the groundwork for all the shit they’re upset about.

Goldberg in particular…it doesn’t matter if Liberal Fascism was edgy posturing to say something hurtful or genuine pseudointellectual babble, it’s a document that has defined the descent of the right into reaction and the manner in which they code their excuses for eroding democracy while crying self-defense.

It’s not that repentance or regret is impossible—it is better that they’ve recognized how far things have gone—but that this was a predictable outcome that was predicted by people that Hayes and Goldberg viewed as unworthy of hearing. We’re at this point precisely because so much time and energy was put into invalidating anyone who said there would be consequences for irresponsible rhetoric.

The cue card responses Goldberg invented always lent themselves to empty, no-you anti-intellectual posturing…documents do not matter, history does not matter, political philosophy does not matter; there is only the rhetorical game of tying the opponents of the present to the blackest black. To understand why this was stupid and would create harm to everyone—to conservatives duped into going down a hole into reaction that subtracts from their material welfare and their…soul, for lack of a better…they didn’t have to listen to liberals or leftists, but deep, compassionate thinkers like CS Lewis. It’s not just the left/right axis that’s screwing us, it’s the way that shallowness and performativity—all rhetoric, no epistemology—has destroyed meaning.

Like most “reasonable” conservatives, they have spent their lives cultivating this unreality of heightened emotions for their audience—constant fear, constant betrayal, constant reinforcement of the in-group’s axiomatic goodness and smartness—while believing themselves capable herdsmen…they can steer the rubes because they’re the clever ones, the top of the intellectual hierarchy that needs the proles to vote a certain way. But—as always happens—conservatives don’t actually understand that at some point you’ve changed the culture and the rubes will now con themselves and each other: we’re in a different stratum of grifting now, even nastier and more nihilistic.

The rubes believe they’re the only smart and moral people, a priori, and that questioning this base assumption is an attack. They were trained to think this way by decades of reinforcement and hand-holding by previous generations of assholes making short-term gains. Anti-intellectualism and anti-epistemology are now so deep that there’s no need for pundits that do conservative casuistry, that tell cunning lies. The vehement assertion—these are today’s axioms, we are entitled to dictate truth and you are not—is sufficient for the culture they germinated. That’s the core appeal of “Liberal Fascism” and its myriad brethren—an opiate substitute for actual rigor thought, a series of talking points that end genuine discussion.

There is a natural flow from self-serving assumptions required to write a book that does tu quoque with Nazism, but also necessary to start a forever war based on falsified intel, but also to viewing Donald Trump as a truth-teller.

They’re not in the reality based community; they make their own reality; people that try to declare that things are real are losers.

(Mind you, the effort to destroy critical thinking is Hydra-like in scale and has accrued over centuries. Empires and slaves had to invent gradations of humanity—in contradiction of the obvious—to explain their inhumanity,. Companies fucking up people and the world through pollution decided to destroy the basis of empiricism. Churches needing to hold power and capital in ways opposed to their own doctrine had to destroy the idea of doctrine. The wealthy cannot justify their wealth with existing paradigms, and must therefore invent new economics in which their thefts are not theft but sign of superior virtue and intellect…over and over, with “science,” with “theology,” with “ideology”…)

…but US conservatives have constructed their own bespoke version, procedurally generated from existing bullshit, where the emphasis is that their followers don’t have to have beliefs, just signify their belief through rituals of conservative-ness that are most acts of consumption.)

Basically—the right has been trained to see bullshit that sounds right as a form of validity, and the old pseudointellecualism no longer titillates the audience: they want permission, not justification. Tucker Carlson is a transparent panderer—a man who set out to provide Trumpists what they wanted because he could not sell anti-Trump to a big enough market share—but he provides license…to be prurient, to be contemptuous, to be entitled to harm your inferiors…and that is what is desired.

It is not wrong, when reaping, to observe who sowed.

…but that’s exactly what mainstream conservatives and “centrists” are going to do, pretend that the far-right fell from the sky and are not a natural cultural outcome of decades of declaring that beyond their assumptions curiosity is weakness, skepticism is disloyalty, and that it’s offensive to demand rigor or citation. They’ve built the juggernaut; the audience has learned the lesson so well that they don’t need guidance. So the only thing to do is pretend they had nothing to do with it.

The core proposition of conservatism is that there should be an in-group the laws protect but don’t bind, and out-groups the laws bind but don’t protect.

Until recently, this was indefensible on its face, spawning the entire industry of right wing pseudo-intellectual bullshit justification crap. Over time this has amounted to millions of pages of drivel, all of which is axiomatically dishonest, and David Brooks is a perfect representative of the people who generated that drivel.

However, that entire industry of right wing pseudo-intellectual bullshit justification crap is now totally obsolete. The Trump years have shown that, for a dangerously high fraction of the electorate, the core proposition of conservatism is no problem at all if they think they will be the in group.

re: #60 William Lewis

The seller dropped it off at the shippers who put it in a box. There was a bit of bubble wrap at the connector end. Nothing else. The bottom of the box had started ripping out from the 25 pounds of steel chassis. Just disappointing.

That’s why, whenever I sell something on eBay, I always pack it myself (and insure it); that way, I know that, unless the shipper (usually USPS, but also UPS on a very rare occasion) does something monumentally stupid or there’s a unforeseen disaster enroute (which, fortunately, hasn’t happened to me in over fifteen years of shipping eBay sales), what I’m shipping will get to the other end intact and undamaged.

I always strap the boxes in all three axes, all flap edges, and the box joints with multiple layers/runs of Scotch heavy-duty shipping tape.

I’ve never personally met a bad cop, and it is fair to say I don’t get out much (and never have).

But I’m usually pretty good about not extrapolating my personal experience to all of reality, so I’m not about to fall for any of that anti-BLM crap.

Jennifer Rubin: “While it’s true that the country is more deeply divided along partisan lines than it has been in the past, it is wrong to suggest a symmetrical devolution into irrational hatred. The polarization argument too often treats both sides as equally worthy of blame, characterizing the problem as a sort of free-floating affliction (e.g., ‘lack of trust’).”

“This blurs the distinction between a Democratic Party that is marginally more progressive in policy positions than it was a decade ago, and a Republican Party that routinely lies, courts violence and seeks to define America as a White Christian nation.”

Wow sometimes it takes awhile for the braintrust elite to get clued in but eventually they get it. The USA has been teetering on falling into the Hybrid Regime status alongside Putin’s Russia, falling from the Flawed Democracy we have currently for awhile now.

During Trump 2016 we were planted one foot in one foot out of Hybrid Regime territory but Biden has been trying to pull that one foot back into Flawed Democracy during the past 10 months.

But Trump in 2024 would be a racetrack towards total Dictatorship bypassing even Hybrid Regime via granting full immunity for Oathkeepers, III%ers, racist local police, Republican election official cheats and fraudsters via Pardon power and DOJ corruption.

I’m glad to see it’s finally sinking in but American fascism is here. It’s like beating a big bear back with a stick. It’s been obvious for anyone watching for the past 40 years.

“…the [two payments totaling $121,670] to Fischetti are unlikely to run afoul of federal campaign finance law, said Brendan Fischer, an attorney with the Campaign Legal Center. That’s because the ban on the personal use of funds from campaign committees does not apply to spending by party committees, he said.

But Craig Engle, head of the political law group at the law firm Arent Fox, said party committees have often avoided paying for personal expenses for another reason — fear that they might lose their tax-exempt status, for appearing to use nonprofit funds for their leaders’ personal benefit.
Engle said the RNC’s spending related to the Russia investigations was clearly connected to the then-president’s campaign and position in office. “It’s hard to quarrel with that,” Engle said.

But in this case, Fischer said, the idea that the investigations in New York are connected to Trump’s campaign or position in the party “seems like a real stretch.”

I have so many stories from my youth. And I was the prey in some of them.
My father had a friend in the Philly police dept.
He would drive his squad car to a garage he knew, put it on the lift, lift the car 3 inches off the floor, put it in drive and let it run with a brick on the gas.
I witnessed that.
It would show miles on the odometer that he never drove in his “beat”. He had to have mileage to prove he was doing his job.
They would sit and joke, play cards. Have a beer or two sometimes. Ahhh. Work!

The other day on Alex Jones some guy called in to say that you had to nebulize food-grade hydrogen peroxide (35% concentration rather than the commercial 3%).

It’s out these. Probably related to bleach medicine claims in the quack taxonomy.

IIRC 35% hydrogen peroxide is “effin” unstable.
