Far Right Conspiracy Site “Gateway Pundit” Sued by Georgia Election Workers

Law • Views: 22,190
Jim Hoft (r), owner of the far right fake news blog Gateway Pundit

It started with Donald Trump; he targeted two specific election workers in Georgia in his “stop the steal” conspiracy theories. Next, sycophantic far right liar Jim Hoft, known for years as the Dumbest Man on the Internet, picked up Trump’s false claims and ran with them in multiple posts at his crappy blog.

And now, those two election workers have filed a defamation suit against Hoft and his creepy brother Joe, after they were bombarded with harassment and death threats caused by Gateway Pundit’s incitement.

The defamation suit against The Gateway Pundit was filed Thursday by Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, a voter registration officer in the Fulton County elections office, and her mother, Ruby Freeman, who was a temp worker for the 2020 election.

The lawsuit names the Pundit, its founder and editor Jim Hoft, and his brother, writer Joe Hoft. It alleges they repeatedly published demonstrably false claims that portrayed the women as “traitors” who conspired to “steal the presidential election in Georgia.”

The lawsuit, filed in St. Louis Circuit Court, alleges that the Pundit’s “lies” about Freeman and Moss “devastated” their reputations and “instigated a deluge of intimidation, harassment, and threats that has forced them to change their phone numbers, delete their online accounts, and fear for their physical safety.” Freeman went into hiding.

[…]

The Gateway Pundit covered the false allegations in multiple stories, including one that identified Freeman by name with the headline: “What’s Up, Ruby? Crooked Operative Filmed Pulling Out Suitcases of Ballots in Georgia IS IDENTIFIED.” The Pundit identified Moss in another story.

The Pundit stories continued through the summer, even as multiple audits and reviews confirmed the accuracy of Fulton County’s vote results.

“I couldn’t have imagined the lies that The Gateway Pundit would tell about me, pushing people to harass me and my family and to threaten us with violence,” Freeman said in a statement issued by her lawyers.

And this, of course, is not the first time Hoft and Gateway Pundit have been sued for publishing defamatory lies.

I finally got around to watching The Matrix with my kids last year just to be aware of all the cultural/meme references.

Still haven’t watched Die Hard or most any of those other major blockbuster movies.

The first Die Hard is a solid film, one of the best heist/action flicks ever made - the sequels are meh (Die Hard With a Vengeance is good, thanks to strong supporting roles from Jeremy Irons and Samuel L. Jackson).

The first Die Hard is so memorable largely due to the late Alan Rickman and his portrayal of Hans Gruber, the film’s primary antagonist. One of my all-time favorite cinematic villains.

Taut directing by John McTiernan keeps the film moving a brisk pace.

It’s easy to go along with the order to risk death by doing nothing if you’re a right-wing authoritarian who falls in line, but it’s much harder when you actually face that death.

Surprising absolutely no one.

JCPOA constrained and contained Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Trump shredded the deal and enabled Iran to resume nuclear enrichment. At same time, Trump also gave North Korea time and space to work on their nukes.

Trump made the world a more dangerous place because he was the dumbass who didn’t understand any of the issues he faced, and thought he was the smartest guy in the room. He always thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room, and surrounded himself with yes men and sycophantic suckups who’d tell him what he wanted to hear and ignored those who said otherwise.

This had dire consequences, both with Iran and later with the pandemic.

Bibi has been against the JCPOA since the beginning, but he also has been claiming that the Iranians have been 6 months from going nuclear for more than a decade.

Trump abrogating the nuclear deal actually got Iran much closer to going nuclear, and now that Bibi is out of power, the Israelis are realizing the clusterfuck Bibi and Trump made of things for Israeli security. Bibi had used Iran as a wedge issue to prove security bona fides and to get US aid to flow on the threat to Israel.

And a near panoptic witness to all things public, many things private. Now any of us might be a living witness to what we recorded. Not just our word anymore. From bad cops to “karen”.

all right, guitar techs: i’ve installed and adjusted the glendale saddles that showed up today, after several adventures. everything intonates perfectly, as promised, except my sixth-fifth string saddle. Both the e and the a are just a little sharp at the twelfth fret, and they stay a little sharp at the twelfth fret regardless, seemingly, of what I do in lengthening the string. I’ve adjusted string height to remove buzz, so I’m assuming it’s not that, as string height is pretty much personal preference to begin with, so can’t imagine it can interfere with intonation. Is the next idea the nut? It’s Fender, made in mexico. The quality is generally pretty good on these, but I’m wondering if it’s possible the nut slots didn’t get cut quite right originally? Would there be any simple test to know whether it’s worth paying a tech 50 bucks to mess with the nut? I’m not hearing any weird pinched harmonics or overtones when I play those strings, which is generally the way I know something is wrong at the nut.

(I hate using shitty little twine for the tree.) We were on the road in probably five minutes from when we parked.

Trump’s “social media” “venture” is already under SEC investigation for financial chicanery. No one is being clear on where/how this money was raised and who is involved. That raises all kinds of red flags, to say nothing of what these “investors” seek to gain from this.

Beyond the pump and dump chicanery Trump usually deals in, there’s a lot more here that needs to be uncovered.

This theory of corporate governance is the primary reason the GOP has been completely corrupted into a fascist cult. Mitch McConnell, in his fanatical pursuit of corporate money, focused GOP policy on only one end, tax cuts and deregulation, leaving the GOP with nothing to offer voters but culture wars, which have had to become ever more extreme over the decades, until the GOP is now mining Neo-Nazis for policy ideas.

I mentioned earlier in the post about a Japanese baseball player and the Red Sox about whether he was from Ohtani Shohei’s alma mater Hanamaki Higashi HS. Then I remembered the guy that Hanamaki is truly famous for: Miyazawa Kenji. He was from one of the few wealthy families in pre-WWII in his area, a prefecture called Iwate. At the time cold-resistant rice strains were few and bad harvests often. Kenji took to writing poetry and children’s books influenced by his belief in Nichiren Buddhism (which, unfortunately, were supporters of Japan’s war effort, though that was after Kenji died). Anyway, here is one of his most famous poems. It’s titled after its first line (ame ni mo makezu, or “Unbeaten by the rain”):

Unbeaten by the rain
Unbeaten by the wind
Bested by neither snow nor summer heat
Strong of body
Free of desire
Never angry
Always smiling quietly
Dining daily on four cups of brown rice
Some miso and a few vegetables
Observing all things
With dispassion
But remembering well
Living in a small, thatched-roof house
In the meadow beneath a canopy of pines
Going east to nurse the sick child
Going west to bear sheaves of rice for the weary mother
Going south to tell the dying man there is no cause for fear
Going north to tell those who fight to put aside their trifles
Shedding tears in time of drought
Wandering at a loss during the cold summer
Called useless by all
Neither praised
Nor a bother
Such is the person
I wish to be

Ignore the naysayers - as a fan of the original anime it’s damn good - with some nifty plot twists!

Agreed. I love the anime and really like the live action for what it is. I get a chuckle out of Harold of Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle being cast as Spike. I never would have imagined him in that role but he makes it work.

That reminds me of the stupidity about Clinton’s emails. As I recall, they were white world emails sent via the normal internet. If so, they were all axiomatically unsecure no matter how they ware marked, according to the security briefings I had back in the day.

That made all the fuss about the markings surreal to me.

Lawrence Livermore Laboratory runs all their interconnect in Faraday shielded conduits. They used to shield the signals from wired keyboards, peripherals, printers, and displays, too.

My Bluetooth hearing aids are right out. I had been wearing my new hearing aids for a week when I was eating lunch in Post Office Square in Boston.

My hearing aids picked up EVERY Bluetooth device that passed me. I heard snippets of phone conversations and many podcasts. Language podcasts seemed to be the most popular.

My Dad’s stared watching Faux regularly again and I caught a bit of Tucker’s “White Power Hour” tonight that continued his obsession with portraying 1/6 as a “false flag.”

First portion was his screaming bloody murder over subpoenas being issued for phone and bank records of (wait for it) people involved in planning of the “rally” and of those involved in efforts before and after the election to fuck with the certification of such. Then brought on John Eastman to help in declaring this the worst invasion of personal privacy EVAH…you know, barring that period between 2001 and 2009 when anybody with skin darker than cardboard was suddenly under federal (and, in some cases, city & state) surveillance.

The second portion I caught was with Joseph McBride, a lawyer for several insurrectionists who’s claiming that (what else?) there were “agent provocateurs” in the crowd that day handing out weapons and advocating violence, despite months of assertions that nobody in that crowd was armed that day. And insisting that the DOJ has video under wraps showing “police brutality” that day, which I assume is likely an insurrectionist hoping to win litigation against the Capital Police as I don’t know how much sympathy anybody subjected to a police truncheon that day is hoping to inspire.

So yeah, nearly a year later and they’re still trying to BS themselves into believing that this was just a bunch of “tourists.”

What I marvel at is the total disassociation from reality, the blatant refusal to accept that anything they did when they were in power is shaping what is happening to them now. I even snarked to my Dad that perhaps they should have been thinking about all this when they were pushing the Patriot Act through while sneering “If you’ve got nothing to hide, then why are you afraid?”

Fwiw

So why do cable news shows exist when they have relatively small audiences? It turns out they are quite profitable…they are not going to go away any time soon, but their impact tends to be somewhat overblown given that 98% of adults are not paying attention to them. (V)

If one were to have a fictional country with a major political party as cartoonishly evil as Republicans are, it would be rejected by editors for being too one-dimensional.

Yet that is the reality we have. Republicans really are that awful, and minimally we have decades of trying to prevent them from swarming us under in a fascist Zerg-wave.

I saw a piece about the Emmett Till case on the evening news and was somewhat surprised to find that Carolyn Bryant was still alive: though it is a handy reminder that the Jim Crow Era - with its systemic injustices - isn’t really (despite the cottage industry which has sprung up to try to convince the public otherwise) all that much “past”…

Also see Ray Bradbury, The Murderer:

“The telephone’s such a convenient thing; it just sits there and demands you call someone who doesn’t want to be called. Friends were always calling, calling, calling me. Hell, I hadn’t any time of my own. When it wasn’t the telephone, it was the television, the radio, the phonograph. … When it wasn’t music, it was interoffice communications, and my horror chamber of a radio wristwatch on which my friends and my wife phoned every five minutes. …

“When I’m in the field with my radio car, there’s no moment when I’m not in touch. In touch! There’s a slimy phrase. Touch, hell. Gripped! Pawed, rather. Mauled and massaged and pounded by FM voices. You can’t leave your car without checking in: ‘Have stopped to visit gas-station men’s room.’ ‘Okay, Brock, step on it!’”

Fox News nightly shows often top the charts. They have very large audiences for cable TV, sometimes with more viewers than broadcast programs in the time slots they compete.

But still very low single digits of the population, barely cracking 1% in their best showing.

I’ve heard conservatives saying “It was a long time ago. she’s an old woman, leave her alone.” We’re still arresting old men in their nineties for WW2 crimes.
