Thom Yorke performs Free In The Knowledge, a song from his new side project The Smile (with Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and Sons of Kemets’ Tom Skinner) at the Royal Albert Hall, opening a very special Letters Live show.

This was Thom’s first performance in front of a live audience since lockdown, and so was an extra special moment to open our return to this iconic venue.

Serious question for the lizards who wade into the MAGA online world. How do the MAGAs view Miller? Is he celebrated like Cawthorn, Boebert and Green? Tolerated because he hates the right people? Does he make the same kind of appearances as the depraved trio or just show up on the Sunday shows? While he espouses vile policies, his public behavior seems to lean toward what passes as mainstream Republicans rather than the thirsty, publicity seeking behavior of some of his Republican peers.

This is a daily struggle for me. My hair is insanely thick, it’s now past my shoulders (except for my home-cut bangs in front) and washing it just means it’s going to take hours to completely dry, even if I use the blow dryer on it. *sigh* oh well. So it’s every other day or every three days.

I celebrated Christmas with my mother and brother yesterday. We had tamales for dinner (good Mexican feasting) and homemade pecan pie for dessert. I bought my mother a pair of fancy Japanese tweezers for Christmas. My brother got her a big tin of popcorn (long story but she wants a bag of popcorn every day) and a clay pot.

I got my brother a handmade, hand fired stoneware 2 cup coffee mug he requested, and in it I stuffed a t-shirt with a diagram of the Rocinante spaceship from The Expanse. He loved both gifts. I’d gotten the t-shirt ordered before the last season of The Expanse started and he mentioned he’d started watching it, and I was thinking, “I hope he doesn’t buy a t-shirt.”

He got me two t-shirts with screenprints of samurai cats. The other package was…special! It was wrapped in bubble wrap, had an elastic ribbon on it, then a white strip of paper wrapped around the package, then a sealed mauve envelope. He’d ordered me a large furoshiki (Japanese wrapping cloth) from a shop in Roppongi, Tokyo, thinking that he’d give it to me on my birthday, but it arrived MUCH sooner than that, so he gave it to me for Christmas. He also figured out that the special packaging was part of the gift, because that’s how packages are wrapped in Japan. I practically cried when I opened it.

Our mother gave us both cards with checks in them, but my brother will have to rewrite mine because well, mom can’t see that well and the entire check is written and signed in the top half. I can’t even imagine trying to present it for payment.

ETA: My brother in law sent my brother pictures of his granddaughter (my mother’s great-granddaughter) wearing a hat mom had crocheted ages ago for her first great-grandchild. And then a picture of our nephew and his wife holding another blue and white crocheted hat, again done years ago. My niece-in-law is pregnant with a boy. My mother can’t see super well, so my brother put them up on his 52 inch monitor and my mom practically cried. It was a great Christmas.

Supposedly to help people begin the new work week “informed”. Which would be great if there were actual journalists who know what the actual fuck they are doing hosting and guesting on these shows.

What’s annoying is that you can’t find liberals with money willing to invest in actual media and do what conservatives have done, buy up media outlets and convert them to serious news. There’s a decent show with decent hosts here and there but it’s nowhere near enough to combat the truckloads of bullshit spewed across TV, internet and radio daily. Air America was a good idea in theory, but the guys in charge of that had no clue what to do once they got on the air. They also wanted to make their money back NOW and weren’t in it for the long haul.

If we manage to survive this even somewhat in tact and can stem the flow of hate and lies it’s going to be a miracle.

Shadi Hamid, a fellow of the Brookings Institute (a tax-policy think-tank which seem to think most about “how do we lower taxes”).

Their first big study was on behalf of FDR, who commissioned them to figure out what caused the Great Depression. That led the Institute to determine the New Deal was bad for tax policy and to oppose it.

Starting under Ronald Reagan, they started beating the “we have to reduce the deficit” drum, which they’ve done ever since.

My question is not why writing in The Atlantic he would take such a position (it’s really the Democrats fault) but why The Atlantic keeps trying to pass off these writers on their readership. You’d think they’d have learned after hiring Libertarian “hang all the women who ever had an abortion” Williamson, but they keep trying to pass off writers like this as somehow reasonable.

The only world in which the Democrats are responsible for the anti-science positions of the Republicans (including the current ones against masks and vaccines) is if he never met a Republican officeholder since before I was born.

He even gives it away with his “liberals support endless restrictions” (a strawman so large it would be its own prairie fire) and pro-vax is a libertarian position (not a chance, the only thing which is a libertarian position is “I’ve got mine, fuqueyoo”).

Then you’re an idiot and you deserve what you get. No one gets in my home without a vaccine. Period. It’s my home and I determine what’s appropriate in it.

The only reason all the conservatives in my town are vaccinated is the lack of Internet service (no Faceborg) and cable service (FOX News Channel). In the rest of the area the vaccination rate is dismal and wearing a mask gets you ridiculed or physically attacked (so it’s not about freedom and liberals certainly didn’t encourage that).

My wife’s parents were in their 40s when she was born. Her brother is 20 years older than her, the same age as my parents. That child will be raised by grandparents.

my office mate at UNO was part of the second family with a father who’d been part of a second family, so after I told him how my grandfather had started out working in a creamery, it told me his grandfather started out as a slave, and he didn’t mean born into it and then there was emancipation. Apparently he was a young man when the civil war ended.

It happens more often than you (or certainly they) might think. Even after no periods for a while. I’m for people doing whatever they want to do about it, but there do need to be choices.

My aunt had this happen to her, when their older two children were c20 and c16. They loved the boy to pieces, as did his siblings, but he is developmentally disadvantaged. Now that my aunt is gone, his sister has to care for him. A blessing, but not unmixed.

The Huntington was one of my favorite field trips when I was a kid; not sure if I preferred the botanist tour guide or the historian tour guide. The only better trip was the La Jolla tide pools excursion, led by Scripps Oceanography’s grad students.

Or they’ll just claim that this is somehow a bioweapon out to destroy America (which has seen about 800,000+ Americans die from covid out of more than 5 million killed from covid19 worldwide. It wasn’t even targeted against anyone or anything.

And if you’re going to claim it was a bioweapon, Trump’s response played into the hands of those who wanted to use it as a bioweapon by making it easier for people to get sick and die, and to wreck economy in the process instead of taking the lead and using social distancing, masking, and other precautions in place before vaccinations were developed - and once developed - to mandate them nationwide to stop the spread.

From what I’ve read of correspondence from soldiers of that era, that’s actually more consistent spelling than a lot of them…
