Can I use this thread for a general gripe about political discourse on the Left?
Every day, there’s a new outrage from some conservative. They have done something awful, said something awful, committed a crime, demanded that a Democrat be “executed” for something they just made up.
And the response on Twitter is always, “well don’t ask me to vote for Democrats if they don’t DO SOMETHING about this!”
I understand the frustration and I feel it too. But the anger is always directed the wrong way. Not at the people doing bad things, but at the only people standing between us and all-out authoritarianism. And these voices of apathy and despair are winning. They are loud. And they are the voices who will prevail in November when Democrats, as they did in 2016, opt out of the process and let the fascists back in.

re: #7 Unabogie
My primary gripe with Democrats is that they are constantly bringing a 3-ring binder full of “data” to a switch-blade fight. “When they go low, we go high” was approximately the most counterproductive sentiment in the history of politics. I want elected Democrats to figure out how to use anger and vitriol and go on the attack for once. They are constantly playing defense, and an embarrassingly weak defense at that.
I swear Musk is a breakdown or two away from going full Howard Hughes.

re: #7 Unabogie
This is good for outrage. The people blaming Democrats and ginning up rage are rewarded. The Left just won’t admit that they have their own Tucker Carlson counterparts.
Unlike Tucker, none of our shit-stirrers are calling for insurrection. It would be understandable if they did. They’re doing something worse: Get mad and stay mad. We can’t do anything about it. Don’t try.

A significant fraction of these supposed lefties are right wing ratfuckers. This doesn’t solve the problem, and the ones that aren’t ratfuckers are especially irritating.
But IMO there is a legit “DO SOMETHING” issue which the D party leadership does not appear to be getting. Where’s the coordinated messaging that 50R + Manchin and Sinema in the Senate means nothing gets done in Congress? Where’s the “give them hell, Harry” truth telling about Republicans? Where’s the 50 state strategy to try to ensure no Republican runs for Federal office unopposed? Where’s the sustained and visible effort to fight the Great Both Sides Lie of the mainstream media? Where’s the D institution-building that can hope to oppose Fox News? A pure heart and truth isn’t going to cut it.

But here’s the rub, as I see it. We don’t have the money, nor the State Media outfit like Fox, OAN, or RSBN, to wage the same kind of battle. And rest assure, GOP media finds plenty of clips of our side “giving them hell” but our media basically ignores it. We have guys like Beto and Swallwell going out there with zero fucks to give, but I never see them on outlets like TPM, MSNBC, or getting amplified on Twitter. And even if we didn’t have sufficient firepower to combat this, the anger is still heading the wrong way. The energy is never going to come from the top. It has to come from people like us convincing our friends and family that we really are in a fight for Democracy. I don’t believe there is a magic speech to be given or a silver bullet strategy for any of this. Democracy is fragile and keeping it requires constant effort. Too many people think you vote and let the leadership do the rest. It just doesn’t work that way, and November will demonstrate that fact.

Leadership has its role. E.g., the Obama campaigns were damn good at connecting with people, especially in 2008. The problem there is that there was no party-building on top of that work. Ideally you want a positive feedback loop where grassroots energy has a visible effect on what leadership does.
And the problem of the mainstream media has to be faced and overcome. Right now, it is in enemy hands. This problem is larger than D vs. R. It is plutocrat vs. everyone else. The plan of the US ruling class is to institute a second gilded age, where plutocrat control of the media ensures the resulting abuses will never get publicity.

My opinion: you cannot develop a true left wing equivalent of Fox prime time programming — the shows that relentlessly disseminate disinformation and have poisoned our dialogue. The RW want to live in a constant state of outrage and will engage more frequently and with more fervor on any topic. Anger promotes more discussion, especially among those who thrive on RW lies and fundamentalist religious beliefs.
A few weeks ago, I looked at some very old conversations here at LGF — conversations back in 2007 and 2008, years before I joined. There were far longer threads and heated discussions, back when many in the community were YEC, climate change deniers, and almost everyone thought that Obama would be the destructive agent of our democracy, the very force that Trump is proving to be. There was more discussion but of lower quality than today’s exchanges.

After all, Republicans think that only white people should vote and don’t want their children to learn the truth about our history. Jul22 wheat futures seem to be bouncing in a range, after the rapid March price jump (which is how the market adjusted for the invasion):
Just before the invasion, the USDA predicted US wheat planting would be up and that would drive down prices:
uswheat.org
These U.S. wheat highlights and USDA’s outlook for all U.S. agricultural products represent the first predictions for marketing year 2022/23. The new year for U.S. wheat starts June 1, 2022, and changes are to be expected. In addition, it is important to note that USDA’s outlook does not account for unknown potential effects of the conflict in Ukraine.
In the “Grains and Oilseeds Outlook for 2022,” USDA cited high current wheat prices and tight stocks to predict U.S. farmers will plant 48.0 million acres (19.43 hectares) to wheat for harvest in 2022. That is about 3% more than was planted for 2021. Using an assumption of normal spring planting and summer crop development conditions, USDA expects U.S. wheat prices will come down in 2022 with higher U.S. wheat production and ending stocks.
That article was printed just after the invasion.

The wheat market is ‘interesting’ right now. Basically, there is so much uncertainty, that traders don’t want to enter into any futures transactions and be on the hook for stuff they can’t deliver or that won’t be available. It’s not just the blockade of Ukraine, but that a lot of countries are refusing to accept Russian grain ships, many shipping companies don’t want anything to do with Russian products, and insurance companies don’t want to insure vessels with Russian products/commodities. This will really be felt in developing countries.

That Russian blockade needs to be broken.
Some well-placed anti-ship missiles and cruise missiles fired from the Mediterranean against the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s homeport in Sevastopol would help accomplish that.
Yes, it’s risky - but the alternative is to allow the Russian dictator to potentially kill millions through starvation.

Interesting paper! Thanks for posting.
One thing that I have been reading is that the vast majority of Ukraine’s wheat and other exports are via ship from the Black Sea ports.
Supposedly the Ukrainians are trying to export via rail. But Russia is bombing the railroads. And the Ukrainian railroad network is not set up to facilitate mass transport of wheat.
Further, the Ukrainian railroad system uses a different gauge tracks than the rest of Europe. Which requires some sort of change in rail cars at the border.

My guess is that Ukraine basically no longer has a navy in the Black Sea. (There was a joke recently that Russia lost it’s Black Sea flagship to a country which did not even have a navy.)
While Ukraine is starting to receive anti-ship missiles, (Plus likely manufacturing a few.) It probably has higher priority targets than sinking random shipping. Particularly since a lot of that shipping is third-party flagged. Which means that Ukraine might end up sinking non-Russian ships. Which would likely upset folks it is trying to impress, like Turkey and the EU.
I suspect that Ukraine is going to leave it to the West to deal with this and allow them protect the Wests many economic and geo-political interests.
Anyway, with Russia mining the Black Sea and doing a very messy job of it, there are a lot of people in the West rather peeved at Russia. Ukraine is probably not interested in interfering with that process.
In the end, it’s all a big mess with the likelihood that many innocent and uninvolved will be killed or hurt in the process.
re: #83 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus
5 ft and 1520 mm gauge railways
Google tells me most of EU uses 1,435 mm.
I seem to remember that there is a way to pick up Ukrainian railcars and to put them onto std gauge wheels. But that it is time consuming, needs a lot of special equipment and is not very efficient.
Otherwise it would require unloading the Ukrainian railcar and then loading the EU railcars.

- The hot water valve for the hotel laundry room (constantly fills with steaming hot water)
- One of our elevators
These all happened on a Friday, when we had over 20+ checkouts and 30+ check-ins, which means only the elevator has any hope of being addressed before Monday because management doesn’t work weekends and they didn’t seem to give two shits about any of the issues we were having today.

The party has proven that the issue is not “DO SOMETHING” so much as “DO SOMETHING THAT MATTERS.” I still remember the cheers and jubilation when the BIF was passed, the declarations that the party hadn’t proven they could “govern,” that that was what voters wanted to see. And I also remember the jeers and derision aimed towards the CPC for voting against the bill, about how they’d nearly killed the bill until 13 “moderate” Repubs valiantly rode in to save the leadership’s bill, and how they (and progressives in general) were unicorn-chasers who’d be to blame if the party lost in the midterms.
Well, it’s now six months hence and ain’t nobody talking “infrastructure.” No Dems getting accolades as they shovel up that ceremonial “first shovelful,” no red/purple state Dems boasting about how they brought those predicted “millions of jobs” home to their constituents, and certainly no big projects that are likely to bear fruit before November. Instead, we’re getting slammed for not doing anything to help folks with things like gas prices, food costs, shortages of essentials, and other “kitchen table issues” that might have been addressed in part or full by the BBB that the CPC insisted get a vote in the Senate before the BIF be brought to a vote. So yeah, we “DID SOMETHING,” it’s just “SOMETHING” that nobody who votes Dem gives a damn about.

Kitchen Report:
Got a Lodge 12” carbon steel and an Oxo 8” carbon steel. The Lodge warped the first time I cooked it. But I’ve been working on the seasoning and practicing fixing a warp. I have a glass top so it tickles the OCD bone.
The Oxo is almost perfectly seasoned. Perfect in size for 2-3 eggs. Last eggs were almost came free with a shake. I think my Wife Unit will like it.
Thinking of doing a Chicago style pan pizze in the Lodge. Also planned are a blueberry pie and a mango tart. The mango trees are producing this year so I have lots.
Now I’m trying to find sharpening stones. I have a Shun and a Global and they haven’t been really sharp for a while. The honing steel is not doing it any more.
I am an amateur sharpener, and my OCD is trying to get the perfect edge on a knife.
Before spending a shit ton of money, try this diamond stone, diamond is the way to go. Ignore the reviews, it is $26.
I would start every knife on the 400 side, it makes really quick work of any blade. I have put some nice edges on some really cheap knives.
There is something therapeutic about the repetitive motions on sharpening on a stone/plate.

There really is no bottom for these Republican pieces of shit, is there?
Starting at $50,000 you can get a diamond engagement ring that looks like you got it out of a Cracker Jack box.
Not that a rough diamond can’t be beautiful in its own right, but the cut is what brings out the gem’s unique luster. Some cuts already have food-inspired names — like a pear or baguette cut — but the snack brand Angie’s Boomchickapop believes they’ve just added a new shape to the diamond cutting pantheon: the popcorn cut.
The popcorn specialists at Angie’s Boomchickapop have teamed up with jewelry designer Stephanie Gottlieb to create what the pair is billing as the first-ever “popcorn-cut diamond ring” that is “perfect for popping the questions” and will make for an “eye-popping engagement ring.” (Thankfully, the puns slowed down after that.)
To get the shape right, Gottlieb says her master diamond cutters started with a massive 11 carat natural minded rough diamond that was then trimmed down to its final 3.66 carat popcorn look before being polished and set in a yellow gold bezel and band. Finally, hammering the popcorn theme home, the jeweler says the stone’s Y-Z color nears the “fancy yellow” category on the official GIA Color Scale which brings a buttered popcorn-esque light yellow hue to the diamond.

According to an arrest affidavit, Kaitlin Marie Armstrong is accused of first-degree murder. The Austin Police Department issued a search warrant earlier this week in connection with Wilson’s death for a south Austin home owned by a woman with the same name.
Now, the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force is joining the search for Armstrong. According to a press release from the U.S. Marshals, the task force is “conducting a fugitive investigation and pursuing leads” on Armstrong’s whereabouts.
*snip*
The arrest affidavit further explained that Strickland told police he had been in a relationship with Armstrong for about three years. During a break in their relationship, he said he met and began dating Wilson.
Police say Strickland and Armstrong were living together, and Strickland lied to Armstrong about his whereabouts on Wednesday, telling her he went to drop flowers off for someone, and that his phone had died.
According to the affidavit, an anonymous friend reported that they were with Armstrong in January when Armstrong learned Strickland was allegedly having a romantic relationship with Wilson. Police say the friend remembered Armstrong “became furious and was shaking in anger,” and that “Armstrong was so angry Armstrong wanted to kill Wilson.”
Ugh, ugh, ugh.

That’s…..a really bad thing. Seriously, it should be designed so that if the electrical system shorts out or fails, the doors automatically unlock. Or some kind of manual override handle to force open the doors in the event of an electrical failure.

Yep, I did. And when I bought my Subaru, the safety features, high Consumer Reports score and the fact my mom would feel safe in it were all factors in purchasing.
ETA: Just going to add that like hundreds of thousands of people in the Phoenix area, I live in a townhome community without garages. I have a covered parking spot. There’s no real good way to hook up an electrical charger at that point. The guy next door with the new Electrica Meccanica single person vehicle, what he does to charge his car is that he waits until ANOTHER neighbor is gone, moves his car into that slot, drapes the charging cable over the brick wall from his patio, and then charges. Theoretically I could do that, but I’m also an ex-lawyer and I could sure as hell see someone suing me for putting an obstruction (cable) on the sidewalk. So no.

The one thing I like about Consumer Reports is the customer satisfaction bubble. I have purchased cars new that checked all the boxes and yet I despised after six months of ownership. The customer satisfaction kid of gauges the customer sentiment once the new-to-me car after glow wears off. Both Subaru and Tesla have very high brand loyalty.
