The Extremist Supreme Court Is Turning the US Into a Heavily Armed Christian Theocracy

Politics • Views: 19,360

The Supreme Court, stacked with religious fanatics by Donald Trump and the extremist Federalist Society, is turning the US into a thuggish Christian theocracy right in front of our eyes with one horrifying ruling after another.

Today the fanatical majority ruled that schools must allow public, coerced, Christian prayers on school property — and they straight up lied about the circumstances to do it.

Sotomayor’s dissent, which included photographs of the prayers in question, suggested that she thought the majority was not describing accurately the factual circumstances of the case.

“As the majority tells it, Kennedy, a coach for the District’s football program, ‘lost his job’ for ‘(praying) quietly while his students were otherwise occupied,’” she wrote. “The record before us, however, tells a different story.”

Her dissent also pointedly noted that the school district tried to accommodate the coach by offering him a place to pray, off the field. “Again, the District emphasized that it was happy to accommodate Kennedy’s desire to pray on the job in a way that did not interfere with his duties or risk perceptions of endorsement,” she said.

She said that it was “unprecedented” for the court to hold that Kennedy’s conduct, “taken as a whole, did not raise cognizable” concerns of coercion.

Arm up.
You can get lethal pellet guns without a FOID card, including silent sniper rifles, so when fascists come for you, they have no idea that you’re armed.

Fine to pass it, but let’s not expect it to survive. Our focus is too short-term. The “anti-life” movement played the long game and we are going to continue to lose if we don’t do the same.

It’s part of a long term plan, which will include getting people to realize that voting has to occur all the time.

It’s fun to be somewhere that’s dangerous at other times.

I once laid down on Main Street in Lombard at about 3am while printing books overnight for an event the next day. It’s a weird feeling being somewhere you’d die during active hours.

Yeah, that’s good news, despite the reason for it was the deprivation of rights and liberties for women all across the nation. It took the nuclear option of wrecking Roe to get people realizing the deadly seriousness of the situation?

An old high school acquaintance on FB a few years ago let it be known that he, as a Jew, was made to feel unwelcome and eventually quit our high school football team exactly because the football coach had made the players kneel in prayer to Jesus before every game and after every practice. This was a pubic high school in Texas (no surprise I guess). The coach directly tied being a “team player” to participating in prayers specific to a particular deity. This is not an aberration. It is central to the lie that Conservatives have regarding all “freedom of religion” efforts they undergo. They fuel these efforts not to expand religious freedom, they exercise their efforts for their own supremacy.

This Court has rendered the subject moot. If you gave a legal analysis and reasoning akin to what the Court dropped in Dobbs or the gun case or the imposition of religion on students by public school teachers, you’d fail. Why go to law school if someone can just impose this nonsense irrespective of the facts, the law, and science.

We’re managing our project tasks and our project related documents in Teams, in addition to using it to meet and record some meetings, and it’s working very well. The push to talk is my only issue, and that’s a retraining issue because spacebar is a mute toggle in Teams rather than being push to talk. I’m just hard to retrain after using Zoom for a couple of years.

God, I hate Teams. Not just because the software is awful, but because a significant number of users are regulated and can’t USE Teams. So when we have an issue, they can only dial in. Then they whine about not seeing chat. So they want us to copy everything over to their Skype chat. So very, very, very frustrating. First World Problems.

We have the same issue with teams - consultants and contractors can only see the chat while the meeting is active. After that, they’re out. I’m okay with that - especially the PWC people…don’t care for them much to begin with.

“A judge would later rule that Kennedy “was not engaging in private prayer, but was instead engaging in public speech of an overtly religious nature while performing his job duties. BSD tried to reach an accommodation for Kennedy, but that was spurned by his insisting that he be allowed to pray immediately after the conclusion of each game, likely surrounded by students who felt pressured to join him.”

One parent also said a player felt “compelled to participate” in the postgame prayers because “he felt like he wouldn’t get to play as much if he didn’t,” according to court documents.”

Christian fundamentalist entitlement:

“…In November 2015, the Bremerton School District Athletic Director recommended Kennedy not be rehired, stating Kennedy failed to follow district policy, demonstrated a lack of cooperation with the administration, contributed to negative relations (between parents, students, community members, coaches, and the district), and failed to supervise student-athletes after games “due to his interactions with media and community.”

It was a recommendation the district never had to follow because Kennedy never reapplied. He said he never had to in his eight years of coaching, claiming he and other coaches were rolled over every year. He also explained his decision further.

“I knew the HR director because I’ve been married to her for 15-16 years now. So I know what a death sentence is when it says ‘do not rehire,’” Kennedy said. “We never reapplied. Why would we have to reapply when we were rolled over for eight years?”

Jeremy Dys, an attorney representing Kennedy in his Supreme Court case, said, “If your annual evaluation says ‘do not rehire’ at the end of it, are you going to reapply to that position?”

In August 2016, Kennedy filed a lawsuit against the Bremerton School district at the federal district court in Tacoma. He argued the district violated his constitutional rights to free speech.”

A full 85 elected prosecutors “collectively representing over 89 million people from 29 states and territories and the District of Columbia, including over 27 million from 12 states where abortion is now banned or likely to be banned” signed onto a new joint statement pledging not to prosecute people for receiving, providing, or helping with an abortion, no matter the recent Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

That description of how many people are represented by these prosecutors is drawn from a press release put out by Fair and Just Prosecution, whose executive director, Miriam Krinsky, organized the joint statement. The Supreme Court decision at issue means that state officials are now free to restrict abortion according to their wishes, no matter the health consequences for their constituents. Following the release of the decision, the process of imposing harsh, new restrictions on abortion quickly began.

NOEL KING, HOST:

Several states have recently passed restrictive abortion laws. And some of those laws are already being challenged in federal courts, which opponents of abortion rights will tell you is part of a strategy. If a legal challenge to abortion rights makes it to the Supreme Court, then the Supreme Court may consider the status of Roe v. Wade. Evangelical Christian political groups have mobilized around limiting access to abortion. And many of them would like to see this go to the Supreme Court.

But evangelicals were not always so involved in this fight. The latest episode of NPR’s history podcast, Throughline, traces what happened. Rund Abdelfatah co-hosts Throughline. Hi, Rund.

RUND ABDELFATAH, BYLINE: Hi, thanks for having me.

KING: So opposition to abortion has become so associated with evangelical Christians that it seems like that’s the way it was all along.

ABDELFATAH: No. In fact, the Southern Baptist Convention, they actually passed resolutions in 1971, 1974 and 1976 - after Roe v. Wade - affirming the idea that women should have access to abortion for a variety of reasons and that the government should play a limited role in that matter, which surprised us. The experts we talked to said white evangelicals at that time saw abortion as largely a Catholic issue.

KING: So if Roe v. Wade didn’t cause the sea change, what did?

ABDELFATAH: In short, desegregation. Two years before Roe v. Wade, in 1971, there was a Supreme Court case that began to pull white evangelicals into politics. Me and my co-host, Ramtin Arablouei, dove into the story of that case, known as Green v. Connally.

More reasons we need to keep voting blue, especially in states like Wisconsin:

Gov. Tony Evers said he would offer clemency to doctors who are prosecuted for performing abortions in Wisconsin. The statement came during an abortion rights rally at the Wisconsin Democratic Party convention Saturday in which the first-term governor told attendees to hold the line this fall against Republicans “running a scorched earth campaign to divide our state.”

Evers offered the keynote speech during the first in-person state Democratic convention since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. He immediately pivoted to Friday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down the landmark abortion rights case Roe v. Wade. Evers called it a step backward for America, allowing politicians to meddle in personal decisions about reproductive health.

“These decisions should be made between a woman and her doctor, family, and faith,” Evers said during his speech. “Now, these decisions are being dictated by partisan politicians.”

The convention was paused earlier Saturday for an impromptu abortion rights rally in which Evers became emotional as he described the impact of the high court’s ruling on his seven granddaughters.

“Yesterday they were made second-class citizens,” said Evers. “That’s bulls—-!”

A tweet from the rally posted by state Rep. Lee Snodgrass, D-Appleton, said Evers went on to tell the crowd at the rally that he would grant clemency to anyone charged and convicted of crimes for performing an abortion in Wisconsin.

The Roe v Wade hypothesis is correlation, not necessarily causation.

But the removing lead from gasoline hypothesis has all kinds of scientific evidence (like what lead does to the impulse control portion of the brain), and their “let’s look at correlation” section included 40 other countries; some had good economic growth in that timespan, some didn’t. Some had more aggressive policing, some didn’t. And yet ALL of them showed a 17 year lag time between removing lead from gas, and violent crime rates beginning to drop (because the lead was getting into babies and toddlers, and violent crime is really a late teens/early 20’s thing).

It occurs to me that the abortion issue is going to be a serious obstacle to a GOP presidential candidate in 2024. To get the nomination, they will have to promise to work to make abortion illegal nationally, which will be a major turnoff to swing voters in blue and purple states.

Even Christians who are not observant or who aren’t the right kind of observant will be affected. Science says it is 1) alive 2) human 3) distinct from the cells of the mother having its own DNA. In other words, a distinct human life.

It is totally dishonest to combine the words human + life, which when together have a specific subset of the meanings that are generally agreed upon to be a person. Such is what they have to resort to, when they don’t have an actual moral argument.

Far earlier. They first lost the right to be hold office under Elizabeth the First. To hold office, you had to swear that you accepted her as the head of the Church in England and only the Book of Common Prayer could be used for services (officially. It’s amazing how much high church/popery you can sneak in under the Rubrics of 1559 version as Elizabeth herself did ;) both of which were deal breakers for those unwilling to sully their catholic beliefs with even the fairly mild Protestantism such as England’s.

Now after the various turmoil’s of the 1600s, things got far stricter and both Roman Priests and Puritans found themselves unhappy with the Church of England over the course of the century.
