#BREAKING: Polio case of unknown origin found in Rockland County, NY says; last naturally occurring polio case in the United States was 1979 https://t.co/k8qLjWRT6S
— NBC New York (@NBCNewYork) July 21, 2022
New York state health officials said the person with polio appears to have been infected by someone who received the oral polio vaccine (OPV), which hasn’t been given in the United States since 2000.
“This suggests that the virus may have originated in a location outside of the U.S. where OPV is administered, since revertant strains cannot emerge from inactivated vaccines,” the New York State Dept. of Health said in a statement.
According to the CDC, the last case of polio in the United States to originate here was in 1979. The last case brought by a traveler was in 1993.

Don’t believe the hype. DeSantis is what he is- a white supremacist in desperate need of power.

The only countries which hadn’t eradicated Polio were Pakistan and Nigeria, in both cases after listening to conspiracy (or not so conspiracy) theorists. (Edit: It seems like Nigeria may no longer on the list but Afghanistan is).
Originally, Muslim conspiracy theorists claimed that it was a Western plot to sterilize Muslims.
Then, in the case of Pakistan, the CIA’s hunt for Bin Laden involved a _fake_ vaccination drive to get DNA samples of people to see whether his family was hiding in Pakistan. Way to go CIA for reducing the credibility of legitimate vaccination efforts.

Kinzinger has voted the right way on other legislation, except, of course, on anything that protected voting rights. Cheney has been a more consistent opponent of all Democratic domestic policy initiatives; but she did also vote the right way on marriage equality (probably because it means a lot to her sister and she herself knows that voting against it wouldn’t help her retain her seat).

Ugh. Why on earth haven’t all the Trump-appointed executive branch slime been removed? Is this another case like DeJoy where the president doesn’t have the actual power to fire?
Traditionally, IGs were supposed to be nonpartisan, because they were supposed to engage in unbiased investigations. Of course Trump started firing IGs who were investigating his corruption.

As if anything Trump did was “traditional”. If Trump ever talked to his DHS IG appointee, the only topic of conversation would have been Trump wanting assurances of “loyalty” from his tool.
If US democracy fails, its epitaph will include “excessive reliance on norms and traditions”.

re: #217 sagehen
Yes, but according to this, you and I could both use a booster:
“…Adults who are at risk for polio may need a booster dose. You must wait at least 10 years after getting your childhood immunizations (primary series) for polio before getting this booster.
Are there other vaccines that protect against polio? The vaccines dTap-IPV, DTaP-IPV-Hib, and DTaP-IPV-Hib-HB all protect against polio.
dTap-IPV protects against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), and polio. It’s most often used as a booster dose for children who are age 4 years.
DTaP-IPV-Hib protects against all of the same diseases as dTap-IPV and includes Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). Children born before March 1, 2018, who are under age 7 years can get this vaccine as part of their primary series. Children can also get this vaccine as a booster dose when they are 18 months old.
DTaP-IPV-Hib-HB protects against all of the same diseases as DTaP-IPV-Hib and includes hepatitis B. Children born on or after March 1, 2018, who are under age 2 years can get this vaccine. The type of polio vaccine you get depends on your age and if you need protection from other diseases
How well does the vaccine work? After the primary series, the protection for polio is over 95%. After a booster dose, the protection is almost 100%.”

The effectiveness of Paxlovid is greatly reduced the longer you wait to take it. Physicians recommend you seek it out immediately (don’t wait even a day) if you live in a state where the state governor doesn’t restrict access to the drug (mine). Twenty-four hour’s delay means twenty-four hours the virus can multiply and further damage your body.
It might be inconvenient to go now, but you should to protect your health (noting I am not a physician).

No, but I’ve heard about it from a couple of people. I’ll check on it tomorrow
Monoclonal antibodies are supposed to be most effective against the latest variants.

There may not be a cure for post-polio syndrome. The issue is polio which invades the central nervous system destroys long axons which control muscles in the limbs.
In the case where a person contracts severe polio and survives, other nerves take over for the ones which were destroyed. In post-polio syndrome, it is thought that those overworked neurons essentially “wear out.”
The latest data seems to indicate that 80% of people who contract severe polio will later suffer from post-polio syndrome.

That said, I’ve never heard of someone who had the vaccine getting polio.
One case in the US doesn’t mean it’s circulating around here. I gave it some thought myself and decided it would be overkill. Prepared to change my mind if more cases surface — or if my doctor says to do it.

Now that we know this, relaxing the old “use it or lose it” protocol may help to reduce the seriousness of the syndrome. One may hope.

Telling the truth about conservatives is “bigotry.”

It’s not bigotry. Your choice to hate other people is not protected under anything, especially if you claim to be a Christian.
