Nah, he’s going for the “We were in swamp boats crossing the border into Laos under cover of night” approach; it’s a story that sounds plausible and vaguely badass, but ask anybody with actual knowledge of the operations on the ground and they’d tell you, “That never happened, ‘cause if it did, shit would’ve gone sideways in a baaaaaad way.”

I hope this jury had some extra alternates on it. I half-suspect the judge to ask in a few days whether or not anyone on the jury has been not paying attention to what she said and started researching or listening to Jones’ spews outside the court room. And such people will be sent home since they are compromised regarding only making the decision based on the evidence presented in the court room.

If I were the judge, I would say that if Jones is telling the truth, he can say it under oath.

Interesting:

I did some browsing of Wikipedia, and it said that the fetus’s heart was one of the first things to start developing (~3 weeks). I assumed that meant that the “fetal heartbeat” was actually the heart beating. I was very, very wrong. It tracks with the other thing I found which says that synapses develop around 17 weeks, and muscle control and pain responses follow in the next 4-8 weeks.

I, too, am always surprised at the low cost of bribes (maybe only cheapskate bribers get caught?).

Personal note - I was surprised at how much the city paid for the lot next to mine when I purchased the property where I live over 30 years ago. The lot had been attached to the two lots I bought but the city bought it to add to a city park.

The city actually paid more for the one lot than the two w/house & garage that I purchased - kicker is that the lot is legally and physically unbuildable due to setbacks and the fact that about 60% of it is under water (lake/marsh). It was a few months later when I went “aha” after I learned that the mayor and two city council members who voted for the deal (3-2 council vote) had each received political contributions from the former owner ($1000, $500, & $500 respectively). So the city paid about 10x more for the lot than the owner would have received if he hadn’t split it out and sold it to the city.

Spies often target the people who are most desperate - people with, for example, gambling debts, or with a mistress on the side they don’t want the wife to know about. It may seem like a cheesy trope from a James Bond movie, but the desperation to keep one’s life intact and not be shown as a fraud to one’s friends and family is a deeply powerful motivator.

apropos of nothing and that martha’s vineyard stunt:

there are facilities in texas, az, cali, etc for when people arrive:
legal evaluation, processing, shelters, detention, probably charities and not for profit assistance etc

any idea why those facilities are in texas and not martha’s vineyard? why there are none on martha’s vineyard and so they’re not prepared for such an event? (though they did valiantly)

it’s because martha’s vineyard IS NOT WHERE THE BORDER IS

whether incoming migrants should/could be moved around the country so there’s a more even distribution and participation by more states, and who should pay for that, is a fair question.

THIS STUNT wasnt about highlighting that.

I’ve said oftimes that Trump looks more like the Antichrist than any other figure in Christian mythology. Because the authors, in a fit of Christian madness, decided to bring numerology into the equation. Deciding that their novels had to be as plausible to the rabidly evangelical Christian target audience as possible, they made sure that each of his names added up to 6, so that the number of his name was 666.

In this case, I think he thought he was the smartest guy in the room, and well, let’s just say he wasn’t. When I knew him (through Cub Scouts, no less) he was a huge Rush Limbaugh fan and wasn’t anyone I would have trusted further than I could throw him.
It happened some years in the past at that point and I’m sure he thought he’d gotten away with it. Until it caught up with him.

The series might make for entertaining reading for anyone who hasn’t, from the perspective of just how ridiculous and over-the-top much of it is. It is a literalist’s rendition of the events of the Book of Revelation, with a specific focus on the dominant “pre-Tribulation” “pre-millennial” orthodoxy. (If you don’t know what any of those quoted terms mean, don’t feel bad; in fact, appreciate that ignorance is bliss, in this instance.) As I would put it now, the Left Behind series is what happens if you give an evangelical LSD and a copy of the King James Bible and leave him alone for six months.

Small fry local officials are still pretty cheap but there has been a massive increase in prices at higher levels, far above the inflation rate and simiar to the rate of increase in college tuition. I have thought about publishing a standard price list for legislators, judges and members of Congress. We won’t even mention cabinet secretaries or other federal executives, you’d have to be a foreign government or an extra-governmental mega-corporation to afford those.
Bribery in the private sector is also a lucrative and expanding market segment. Employees with access to private information, in particular, could command premium rates, depending on just how sensitve the information was.

Most annoying PHP change, starting in version 7: it now throws warnings if you try to access an array element with an undefined key. This one is making me nuts, because I wrote a lot of code that relied on the old behavior where it just treated it as null, instead of throwing undefined warnings. All of those spots in the code need to check that an array key exists before testing it.

I understand why. They’re trying to impose stronger type-checking on PHP, but it makes updating old code a real bitch.

The House Republican conference rolled out their platform for the 2022 midterm elections with words attributed to Abraham Lincoln, but the Daily Beast reports the quote is actually from a Lehman Brothers ad from the 1980s.

“Commitment,” reads the quote, “is what transforms a promise into reality.”

hi

A tour group bus pulled into the hotel this morning. They are going to take shelter from Hurricane Fiona here. I imagine the hotel bar is going to be packed tonight.

Today we toured the rest of the Dr. Grenfell exhibit that we missed yesterday, including his former home. We had a very long chat with the caretaker, who has a lot of knowledge about the place.

Hurricane warnings have been extended up the west coast of the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundand, and tropical storm warnings have been extended past here to L’Anse aux Meadows. All we can do now is drink. Wait, I meant wait.

Down in the Caribbean Sea, Tropical Depression Nine has formed. It is expected to be a tropical storm as it passes Jamaica, a hurricane as it crosses or passes near western Cuba, and a major hurricane as it approaches the Florida west coast south of Tampa next week.

It’s not that they don’t know about such people, it’s that they don’t regard them as human. In particular, they do not believe that these underclass types have the same rights they do, or even rights that they are obligated to respect. If you are an investor class person (aka “inbred mailbox money gentry”) someone’s financial and social status will determine how you are required to treat them.

Oh, that was such a crazy, care free time, when a few NY investment banks, in an avalanche of hubris and greed, nearly brought down the entire financial market. Lehman, alone, accounted for a total debt of $619 billion(yes, with a ‘B’), primarily from the subprime market. As usual for such clusterfucks, the Lehman execs walked away from the mess at essentially no cost, leaving the tears to their employees and their investors.

Pennsylvania U.S. Senate candidate Mehmet Oz (R) went after his opponent, John Fetterman (D), for purchasing his home for $1 from his family, saying “Only in John Fetterman’s world can you go house hunting and get a home for $1.”

It sounded like a good attack on Fetterman’s blue-collar image, though Fetterman has long admitted that his parents supported him well into adulthood.

But NBC News quickly found that Oz’s mother-in-law, Emily Lemole, also bought her home for $1.

It was much worse than banking executives walking away at no cost. The architects of the Great Recession profited enormously from their games, and the losses from the inevitable crash were “someone else’s problem”.

The banks getting away with that shit is one of the few things in the world that can compete with Trump/Republicans as a rage inducer.

My wife and I went out to dinner last night. At the restaurant I saw a grey haired gentleman wearing a t-shirt that read: “I may be old but at least I got to see all the cool bands.”

one of the stats from the Ken Burns documentary was that property confiscated from the Jews, taken over by the state… was 5% of the Reich’s annual budget.

I knew the general outlines of the Holocaust, but this plugged in so much detail. I read Timothy Snyder’s Bloodlands over the summer. That was an eye opener as well.

i got carried away

there’s a deep dish apple crumble pie in the oven

i made way too much filling (i think the recipe was off by 2x on the filling)

there’s a standard crust apple crumble pie in the oven next to it

still not all used up

i threw together a batch of apple pie oatmeal cookies waiting to go in when the pies come out.

baked potatoes baking under the pie

Next time, instead of apple, use scrapple.

Doug Jensen had been released from pretrial detention, but violated the terms by watching Lindell’s cyber symposium on the internet and was locked back up. Now he’ll get to spend a few years in prison.

I’m now vaccinated against Omicron and the flu. I expect to feel like crap this weekend like I did the last time I got a booster and flu shot.

We got ours last Friday. My arms hurt. She Who Must Be Obeyed felt like shit for 36 hours. We wondered if it was the mRNA or the seasonal flu shot. Who knows? ‘Tis a mystery.

So he’s in Tallahassee, and from the description either at the Gov’s office or the SecState’s office and goes into cardiac arrest. There had to be lots of Security around and, if Florida is like Texas, at least one Defibrillator on each floor of the building. That must have been one massive myocardial infarction, if they couldn’t at least get him to a hospital alive.

We are quickly arriving at a place where we will soon have a “Federation of States” where Red states are aligned with Russia, Hungary and various outlier autocratic European countries and Blue states are aligned with the Britain, EU, Canada, Australia (for now), Japan, Taiwan, and most of Central and South America. In short, Blue states aligned with mostly Democratic states and Red states with authoritarian.

That is to say, the US is approaching an unsustainable concept of a country.
