It is lightly raining here in St. Anthony, Newfoundland now. The harbour has been flat like glass all evening.

Environment Canada weather radar does not cover north or west Newfoundland. On radar now, Hurricane Fiona can be seen on the right side of the image approaching Nova Scotia. It is expected to slow down and turn right over the Gulf of St. Lawrence, then rake up the west coast of Newfoundland.

that Paul Begala/Megan McCain she whines that Barak Obama needs to stop blaming President Bush for things. That clip is from June 2009. He’d been in office 5 months. On the day of his inauguration, job losses had been 800,000/month for 4 months. 3 major banks, and dozens of minor banks, had gone under the previous autumn. Home foreclosures were at historic highs.

Obviously, it’s all his own incompetence that he hadn’t fixed it by June.

Environment Canada has identified the likely area of landfall for Hurricane Fiona.

The next information statement will be issued by 3:00 a.m. ADT.

Fiona will impact Atlantic Canada and eastern Quebec with heavy rainfall and powerful hurricane force winds beginning tonight.

1. Summary of basic information at 9:00 p.m. ADT.

Location: 41.6 North 59.8 West.

About 230 kilometres south of Sable Island.

Maximum sustained winds: 195 kilometres per hour.

Present movement: north at 56 kilometres per hour.

Minimum central pressure: 935 millibars.

2. Public weather impacts and warnings summary.

This storm will be a severe event for Atlantic Canada and eastern Quebec. Fiona will transition into a very powerful post-Tropical storm as it makes landfall in eastern Nova Scotia late tonight/early Saturday morning. This storm is still on track to produce very heavy rainfall and severe winds. Preparations should have been made by this time.

The latest forecast guidance brings Hurricane Fiona northward across Nova Scotia waters tonight, making landfall near Canso, then passing through western Cape Breton Saturday morning, and then reaching the Quebec Lower North Shore and Southeastern Labrador by early Sunday. Severe winds and rainfall will have major impacts for eastern Prince Edward Island, eastern Nova Scotia, southern and eastern New Brunswick, western Newfoundland, eastern Quebec, and southeastern Labrador. There will also be large waves, especially for the Atlantic coasts of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and eastern portions of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Finally, there is a high likelihood of storm surge for parts of Nova Scotia, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and western Newfoundland.

And is this not a civil war in Iran now, with enough pro-theocracy folk that any revolution by libertines and republicans will find pro-theocracy resistance at the ground level?

Ukraine has stripped Iran’s ambassador of accreditation over the issue of Iran supplying kamikaze drones to Russia.

reuters.com

Military authorities in southern Ukraine said in a statement they had shot down four Shahed-136 “kamikaze” unmanned aerial vehicles over the sea near the port of Odesa on Friday.

The air force said separately that for the first time it had brought down a Mohajer-6, a larger Iranian drone, the Ukrainska Pravda newspaper reported.

The Ukrainian foreign ministry earlier said the supply of drones had dealt a serious blow to bilateral relations.

“In response to such an unfriendly act, the Ukrainian side has decided to deprive the ambassador of Iran of his accreditation and also to significantly reduce the number of diplomatic staff of the Iranian embassy in Kyiv,” it said in a statement on its website.

The autopsy report for Elijah McClain, an unarmed Black man who died while in police custody in Colorado three years ago, has been changed to update the cause of death from “undetermined” to “complications of ketamine administration following forcible restraint,” Adams County Chief Coroner Monica Broncucia-Jordan said Friday.

In August 2019, McClain, a 23-year-old massage therapist, was walking home from a store when he was apprehended by Aurora police officers responding to a “suspicious person” call. Police said McClain had resisted and he was placed into a carotid hold.

Paramedics diagnosed McClain with “excited delirium” and administered the powerful sedative ketamine. He suffered a heart attack on the way to the hospital. Three days later, he was declared brain dead.

The only argument I have with Stonekettle’s thread is that Hollywood has made movies about soldiers who worked support jobs…it’s just they’re usually either comedy films or one-offs like Hacksaw Ridge about non-coms who won medals for doing brave/crazy shit during combat. Hence why asswipes like the candidate from Ohio feel they have to lie about their service, because the only movies made about guys who load cargo are comedies showing them as lazy asswipes looking to game the system.

A Michigan man accused of killing, dismembering, and eating parts of another man has pleaded guilty.

Mark David Latunski, 52, entered his plea before Judge Matthew J Stewart in the 35th District Court on Thursday, according to MLive. com.

He pleaded guilty to charges of open murder and mutilation of a body. “Open murder” contains both first and second-degree murder. A hearing on 18 October will determine whether he will be convicted of first or second-degree murder or manslaughter.

Latunski killed, dismembered, and consumed parts of a 25-year-old victim named Kevin Bacon in 2019.

CHICAGO (CBS) — Major developments surfaced Thursday int the 40-year-old investigation into the Tylenol murders in the greater Chicago area.

We learned Thursday that investigators went to Boston this week to re-interview the man considered a suspect in the seven deaths.

James Lewis was never charged with the murders, but he was convicted of trying to extort $1 million from Johnson & Johnson in the days after the cyanide-laced pills showed up on store shelves.

The CBS 2 Investigators began re-examining the case back in April. As CBS 2 Investigator Brad Edwards reported, we went to Boston as well last month to try to track down Lewis.

i hear ya… Red Ball Express, Three Kings, Sgt Bilko etc… the hard part about making a movie about quiet competence is that its not very exciting so……

but I completely agree with Stonekettle stating that all kinds of service is important and quiet competence is very much sought after and desired and appreciated by those on the pointy end of the stick and that other vets would understand if he had simply stated that.

To be fair, in this election, building on a reputation of doing hard thankless tasks could have been spun well, and adding in the understanding of supply side economics and logistics and knowing how important transportation and doing a job right could have paid off in some blue collar votes but that’s not how these MAGA types roll… instead we get lies, embellishments and stolen valor.

My parents did 20+ years apiece, my father as an AD (jet engine mechanic) and my mother as an AZ (clerk/bookkeeper). Neither job is particularly heroic or glamorous, not the sort of jobs you see on recruitment posters or TV ads. But they kept jets in the air and put food on the table for a family of four. And that’s all that really mattered in our household.

This discussion reminds me of the old dictum that “amateurs study tactics, professionals study logistics.” Professionals understand the critical role of the support structure. Any third world army can come up with a few brave and smart guys who can operate their tanks, planes, and helicopters. What they can’t come up with is skilled technicians to maintain and repair the massively complicated machines, or parts personnel to secure and track the myriad spares and consumables required. They also need cooks and managers who know how to keep people fed under often very trying conditions. Well, this could go on for days.
I’ve had the sad and disturbing experience of seeing families flat out lie about a deceased loved one’s military record. This has happened twice with relatives and involved both eulogies and published obituaries. One was an uncle whose family falsely claimed that he had been a pilot in the Air Force. In fact , like my father, he had been a crash rescue firefighter. That’s how we knew him in the first place. He and my dad were co-workers. Dad introduced him to my mother’s sister and they hit it off nicely, 4 children and 52 years together. Now, crash rescue is extremely dangerous and challenging duty, and could not be more important if you’re trapped in a burning aircraft. It just didn’t rate for some reason though and the scumbag relatives made up stories about a dead man.
The other was a cousin of my mother. He died in a car wreck. In his eulogy the preacher claimed that he had been a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and had been “shot down 17 times.” My brother told me later that he could see me raise my eyebrows and straighten a little when I heard this. He was indeed a Vietnam vet but he had been a truck driver in a supply unit, a damned dangerous task, especially in Vietnam, and needless to say, a vitally important one. Yet they still lied.
I thought “what the fuck?” when I heard all this but I obviously held my peace over it.

An interesting archeological find here in Czech Republic:

Archaeologists in Prague are currently uncovering a monumental building from the Stone Age. The so-called roundel, built around 7,000 years ago, is located in the district of Vinoř on the outskirts of the city. Experts are hoping that the research will reveal more information about these mysterious ancient structures.

Roundels are large circular structures from the Neolithic period, that were constructed between 4600-4900 BC. That makes them the oldest monumental buildings in Europe, far older than the Egyptian pyramids or England’s Stonehenge.

One such roundel is currently being examined in Prague’s district of Vinoř. So far, research has shown that the structure is exceptionally well-preserved. Archaeologists were surprised to discover intact remains of the palisade troughs into which the central wooden structure was originally embedded.

Every year as we get around to santa ana conditions in the fall/winter, as humidity drops down low, by sinuses complain.

More so as time goes by.

Problem is that as the humidity drops the sinuses get irritated.

And the side effect is that every tooth which has been subject to assault by a dentist starts to complain.

Loudly.

It’s like all your toothaches, ever, decide to remind you of you past.

Good morning.

Hurricane Fiona struck Nova Scotia early this morning, causing significant damage and leaving half a million customers without electric power. The storm then struck Îles de la Madeleine, flooding the whole island.

Fiona is now in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, headed in our direction just off the coast. Hurricane warnings have been extended north up the Great Northern Peninsula. We should get the worst this afternoon or this evening.

The Weather Network just quipped that this won’t be a good time to be in Happy Valley, Labrador.

I think we’ll stay put today rather than go out and tour.

I’m following both the National Hurricane Center and Environment Canada. The latter recently posted the following:

The next information statement will be issued by 3:00 p.m. ADT.

Post-tropical Fiona is impacting Atlantic Canada and eastern Quebec with heavy rainfall and powerful hurricane force winds. Conditions will improve over western Nova Scotia and eastern New Brunswick later today, but will persist elsewhere.

1. Summary of basic information at 9:00 a.m. ADT.

Location: 47.0 North 61.2 West.

About 130 km northwest of Sydney, Nova Scotia

Maximum sustained winds: 130 kilometres per hour.

Present movement: north-northeast at 55 kilometres per hour.

Minimum central pressure: 938 millibars.

2. Public weather impacts and warnings summary.

Fiona is over western Cape Breton as of 9 a.m. and is expected to track northward through the day and reach the Quebec Lower North Shore and Southeastern Labrador by late tonight. Severe winds and rainfall are already occurring over Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, southern and eastern New Brunswick, western Newfoundland, and eastern Quebec. Winds will spread into southeastern Labrador later this morning. There are also large waves, especially for the Atlantic coasts of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and eastern portions of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. There is storm surge occurring for parts of Nova Scotia, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and western Newfoundland.

Peter Thiel lives in New Zealand. I don’t know how much he paid for that citizenship (there was definitely something shady about it), he also bought a substantial piece of land (substantial enough to be self-contained/self-sufficient, with sheep and fruit trees and acres of vegetables, and a fresh-water lake).

He assumes he can extract his money in time the collapse won’t hurt him personally.

where are the sharpie lines extending it into Alabama?

Blargh. At our morning standup yesterday, one of the managers was talking about how a key Alabama location was under special watch because of the soon coming hurricane. Based on what I knew at the time, I thought that location was not at risk, but the XXX number of locations we have in Florida are. Looks like Havana’s going to take a direct hit, as well, but as an American temple of capitalism, we have no locations there.

Sad to see that ESPN is getting rid of its monthly Streak for the Cash game. Had so much fun with it over the years and learned a lot about the variety of sports across the world. From Chinese league soccer to Indian league cricket to whether or not Phil would see his shadow, the game was stupid fun at no cost. Had just recorded win No. 7,000 yesterday. My longest streak was 23. For perspective, the longest single-month run was 55.

I am sure ESPN will do something else - probably an event tied to daily fantasy that is sponsored by DraftKings or FanDuel or Caesars. And certainly something the Mouse can make actual money off of.

It’s the only poll showing Crist with a lead. So we’ll have to see if additional polls show the race tightening or not. I remain hopeful that, like the young people of Iran, America’s young voters have been awakened to what the theocrats have planned for them, and vote accordingly.

Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Sep 24, 2022 • 10:12:19am

I’m back from breakfast.

The winds are starting to pick up here in St. Anthony now.

Fiona is post-tropical, but still a hurricane.

Fiona continues to produce hurricane-force winds, heavy rains,
storm surge, and rough marine conditions across Atlantic Canada and
the surrounding waters. Surface observations suggest that the
minimum pressure has been rising, and is now estimated to be
about 945 mb, which is still extraordinarily low. The maximum
winds of the storm are decreasing and are estimated to be near 70
kt.

Fiona is now an occluded low, and it has slowed down. The initial
motion is estimated to be northward at 22 kt. A slower northward
motion is forecast during the next few days, taking the center of
the system across the Gulf of St. Lawrence through tonight, across
Labrador early Sunday, and into the Labrador Sea by Sunday night.
The NHC track forecast is just a touch to the west of the previous
one.

Winds are expected to fall below hurricane strength later today,
but the cyclone is still forecast to be a potent low for the next
day or so while it continues to affect Atlantic Canada. NHC will
continue to issue forecasts for Fiona until gale-force winds end
along the Atlantic Canada coastline.

The “problem” with Latino Family Values is that they are actual family values, not just bullshit talking points: they favor strong families, strong communities, strong social institutions like schools and hospitals.

The GOP “family values” can be summed up as anti-LGBTQ, anti-abortion and pro-business.

Problem with that is that when you look at an ultrasound you can clearly see what appears to be a beating heart because the proto-heart twitches rhythmically. The resolution on ultrasounds doesn’t show tons of detail, but it is emotionally powerful to see this sign of life.
As many here have said, it has nothing to do with whether a woman should be forced to carry to term, though.

Of course I know that
I was speaking sort of metaphorically

An ultrasound is not the thing. Its a representation.
Show us the heart.
Science/medicine has actually looked inside.

I once had a cervical X-Ray.
Doc who read it thought I had a slipped disc.
Nope it was an earring I forgot to take off

Another time it was a chest xray.
They thought I had a dangerously enlarged heart. Like don’t exert yourself or splat.
Nope further testing showed that my heart isn’t in the right place so it looked enlarged.
but it works just fine.

Show us the thing.
