I'm still amazed at what Fox has become. I really didn't think it would go this far before the wingnuts stood up but it seems Fox news watchers and Tea Party supporters are happy to go along with the agenda.

Perhaps it's preparation for giving Ms Thomas a reality show, "Helen Thomas's Alrington".

It's got a lot further down to go before it gets better.

Fox is approaching the point of no return, if not already there. They present maggots up to their viewers and proclaim them purveyors of wisdom.

The far right has always been anti-Israel, and as Fox continues popularizing the views of people like Ron Paul and Alex Jones, you can expect that anti-Israel attitude to get worse. This is just the beginning; we're seeing the right wing devolve all the way back to the Father Coughlin days.

At the risk of sounding like a nut job, I'm waiting to see if there will eventually be an open alliance between the racist elements of the American far-right and the fanatical Islamists based on their shared anti-Semitism (the enemy of my enemy is my friend concept). It could conveniently dovetail with those in Central Asia who consider themselves the original, "true" Aryans. And let's not overlook the European resurgence of the far-right playing into it as well—the focus there still seems to be Islamophobia, but that could change (and probably will change since many of the groups have neo-Nazi leanings). Don't take my word for it, view reports listed by country at the Stephen Roth Institute's website.

Things to consider:

1.) David Duke is a fan of Ahmadinejad and attended the Holocaust denial conference in Iran in 2006. Sure, Duke is still far from mainstream, but so was the John Birch Society until recently. (For now, let's say that it's just coincidence that he's currently sporting a full beard.)

Also see this article by the European Jewish Press about German neo-Nazi groups wearing t-shirts with the Iranian flag during the 2006 World Cup.

2.) Iran's Nazi website was recently allowed to re-open. Snippet from the link:

The Nazi website does not appear in any way linked to the Iranian state, but with strict controls on the Internet blocking many sites deemed undesirable, TABNAK criticized the government for granting permission to the Nazi website.

"Why has the Culture Ministry given permission to the so-called Iran's Nazism society ... we hope the authorities have a proper reason for that," TABNAK said.

Considered close to Ahmadinejad's electoral rival Mohsen Rezaie, TABNAK said the website was dedicated to "spreading (Adolf) Hitler's fascistic ideologies."

"It had once been blocked but then unblocked," TABNAK said.

"Does it mean the activities of this extremist cult have been approved by our authorities?"

3.) Fox News seems to be okay with the 9/11 conspiracy theory. One part of that theory conveniently includes Jewish & Israeli involvement (there's more here). Fox may not be focusing on that aspect at present, but they could go there.

4.) Though I'm relieved by it, I'm also a little suspicious at the sudden cessation of the right-wing using Islam & Muslims as the new bogeyman that's coming to get everyone while they sleep (I'm not talking about loons like Geller, I mean people like Gingrich, Bolton, campaigning politicians, etc.) Maybe it's just a result of the elections being over. We'll see if it starts up again as the 2012 campaigning gets underway in 2011.

Is it crazy to make these connections? Maybe, maybe not. I hope I'm wrong.

There've been stranger alliances, so it's not crazy.

The non-American far-right may also cozy up with Islamists, as the HD-conference you cited shows. Denier Roger Garaudy even converted to Islam, so did Rene Guenon, who was all about "Tradition" and mysticism and who is adored by some of the European Right. The latter wasn't an Islamist but a Sufi, but this shows that there isn't really a necessary aversion. So all it depends on is what far-right group considers what group more dangerous - Jews or Muslims.

I think the documents revealed that half the mideast wants the US to attack Iran.

Slip them an extra $10 and they'll go right back to accusing Obama of being anti-Israel.

Interesting. I'd never heard of Garaudy & Guenon. Odd that Guenon seems to have written quite a few scholarly works on metaphysics. I can't speak for other paths as I have not had direct contact with any of them, but Sufism is by nature experiential and therefore different for every person (which is why each person is supposed to have their own teacher to guide them along the path).

I wonder what would make the European Right like him so much. Do you know?

*blinks* Wait. How did we go from talking about Fox news to Sufis?

Heh.

Of course. The seeds of hatred are already sewn. It just needs targets now. NOthing needs to be proven true. These people believe on some level that Fox is the only actual news telling them the truth. Now that tehy are so invested, whatever Fox says becomes real to them.

As to turning on the Jews, it was inevitable. Rightwingers always turn on the Jews.

re: #8 CuriousLurker

It is unlikely that there will be an alliance with the Islamists. However, the American far right turning on the Jews was inevitable. We will also be the more sustained target. We always are.

This is because of all those Jewish intellectuals who are into things like social justice on the one hand, and the fact that we challenge the sense of legitimacy of many Christians, simply by existing on the other.

Yeah no shit. Canada looks better and better.

As opposed to MSNBC who has had on the rabid anti-Semite Pat Buchanan as an analyst and occasional fill-in host for years.
