So let me get this straight - if a year's worth of preparation and giving away converter boxes didn't work, what will? And if their TV's go out, they can always stimulate the economy by buying a new one.

I saw Curtis Mathes listed in a manual for a universal remote. I think they're made by one of the other companies.
I had one of the old Zenith sets with an ultrasonic remote control. Got it from a relative because it was broken. Fixed it, and used it for years. 18" B&W "portable", with tubes.

All right. I've got a problem. Perhaps someone can help me with it. I'm a Classics student and I've been wondering where the word Palestine came from. Yes, I know that the British mandate used this term but most British officials at the time had a classical education. They got the name from the Roman province of Palaestina which is derived from the Greek Παλαιστίνη. Now, some people claim that the Greeks got this word from the Philistines or the Hebrew word for the Philistines. I'm not convinced. Παλαιστίνη is mentioned by Herodotus and I'd like to know whether Herodotus:
1) Coined the word himself
2) Derived it from a purely Hellenic combination
3) Used a foreign derivative.
My Liddell and Scott doesn;t even cite Παλαιστίνη so I have no dependable source to which to turn. Any ideas?

If the House impeaches Blago , it then of course goes to the Senate for the question of removal.

The key is actually where you get your signal from, more than the TV itself.
If you get cable or satellite, you don't need a converter. Only people who receive over-the-air broadcasts do, and then, only if they have an older TV.

All right. I've got a problem. Perhaps someone can help me with it. I'm a Classics student and I've been wondering where the word Palestine came from. Yes, I know that the British mandate used this term but most British officials at the time had a classical education. They got the name from the Roman province of Palaestina which is derived from the Greek Παλαισ&# x03C4;ίνη. Now, some people claim that the Greeks got this word from the Philistines or the Hebrew word for the Philistines. I'm not convinced. Παλαισ&# x03C4;ίνη is mentioned by Herodotus and I'd like to know whether Herodotus:
1) Coined the word himself
2) Derived it from a purely Hellenic combination
3) Used a foreign derivative. My Liddell and Scott doesn;t even cite Παλαισ&# x03C4;ίνη so I have no dependable source to which to turn. Any ideas?
Heb.Pilishti = philistines, I think

Hold on to your asses:
'The incoming Obama administration is prepared to abandon President Bush's doctrine of isolating Hamas by establishing a channel to the Islamist organisation, sources close to the transition team say.
The move to open contacts with Hamas - which could be initiated through the US intelligence services- would represent a definitive break with the Bush presidency's ostracising of the group.
The Guardian has spoken to three people with knowledge of the discussions in the Obama camp.
There is no talk of Obama approving direct diplomatic negotiations with Hamas early on in his administration, but he is being urged by advisers to initiate low-level or clandestine approaches, and there is growing recognition in Washington that the policy of ostracising Hamas is counter-productive.
A tested course would be to start contacts through Hamas and the US intelligence services - similar to the secret process through which the US engaged with the PLO in the 1970s. Israel did not become aware of the contacts until much later.
There are a number of options that would avoid a politically toxic scenario for Obama of seeming to give legitimacy to Hamas.
"Secret envoys, multilateral six-party talk-like approaches. The total isolation of Hamas that we promulgated under Bush is going to end,"said Steve Clemons, the director of the American Strategy Programme at the New America Foundation'

I don't know for sure, but I'd assume that any configuration where you have a 'box' that you actually change channels with (and your TV stays on channel 3, 4, or whatever it is) would be the same. The basic difference between a monitor and a TV is that a TV has its own tuner built in, while a monitor simply 'monitors' the signal fed into it.

I reakon he's keeping an eye on the political scene and he's going to make a run at congress in 2010. The political consultants are telling him that the PJTV keeps up his public exposure and gives him foreign experience that he can parlay into good talking points during a campaign.

In a post, Bloggers vs. hacks, Yaacov Lozowich wrote:
While prominent journalists flown in to Israel to report on the war continue to kvetch about not being able to do their job properly because the IDF isn't allowing them into Gaza, Meryl Yourish sat at her desk in Richmond VA and used the internet. I don't know how much Meryl's time is worth, but she'll forgive me if I assume the time she spent on her bit of investigative journalism cost less than, say, putting up Jeremy Bowen for one night at the American Colony hotel in Jerusalem. Which is kind of sad, if you're a tax paying British person paying the upkeep of the BBC, since Meryl manages to do a far better job than Jeremy.
This is what Meryl blogged, Hamas targets schools, world is blind, deaf, and dumb on topic:
First, I researched the grad rocket. It is accurate. It can be targeted. Then, I checked on Google maps to see how easy it is to map out a school in Israel. Satellite view. No problem.
Then I checked reports of how many kindergartens and schools have been hit by grad rockets.
Go there and read the whole thing. Meryl systematically shows an aspect of the Hamas terror that the MSM fails to consider.

Obama knows almost nothing, near zero he is.
The mistakes will be many, large and he just could end up so disoriented he will just give up and walk away head down, real chance for depression from him about 2 years in when its all coming undone.
As a case in point, all through the campaign, Obama derailed the Bush deficits as crippling to the economy. Now, all of a sudden, we need trillion dollar deficits for years to lift us out of the great depression (nevermind that unemployment is under 7%).
Does that make sense to anyone?

First, I researched the grad rocket. It is accurate. It can be targeted.
There are a couple of caveats to that statement, however.
One, it depends on what it's launched from. It's intended to be launched from a vehicle, and aimed using a targeting computer. Hamas is using neither. They launch individual rockets off of improvised launchers made out of pipes, and aim them by pointing toward Israel.
Two, even when launched using the intended equipment, it's an area weapon. You don't fire one rocket and try to hit a house; you fire 40 rockets and take out a neighborhood.

Or to bail out idiots who live on every last bit of credit they have, then when it comes time to pay up the government hands them a check to "keep them in their home" that they should never have been able to afford in the first place.

"NO" on Coburn Omnibus Bill (S. 22)
The Club for Growth urges all Senators to vote "NO" on the latest version of the "Coburn Omnibus" bill, officially dubbed as the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2008 (S. 22).
This bill is a hodgepodge of 150 different bills and dozens of pork projects totaling more than $10 billion in new spending. This is hardly an auspicious start for a Congress and a new President who are promising "change."
This bill contains such questionable programs as $5 million for the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Hawaii and Florida, $1 billion for a water project in California intended to settle a lawsuit with environmental groups, and $12 million for a greenhouse in Maryland.

re: #98 Wild Knight
Any ideas?
You might try the 100-year-old Online Century Encyclopedic Dictionary.
It has a few leads on possible derivations -- also written in Greek -- which might give you some answers, one being a unit of measurement and the other referring broadly to wrestling and an area where wrestlers were trained. Interesting reading, nonetheless.
The first time you log on to Century, you'll be required to download a small harmless plug-in (from Lizard Tech, coincidentally!) to enable you to view the dictionary pages most efficiently, but that's a one-time install and it only takes a minute or so. On the Century opening page make sure that you instruct Century to use ALL VOLUMES of their references and not just the dictionary, in order to find 'Palestine'.
Luck.

Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison's groundbreaking pilgrimage to Mecca last month was paid for by an American Muslim organization that has ties to Islamic radicals and is "the Muslim equivalent of the neo-Nazi party," his critics say.
"A U.S. congressman going on hajj sends a very positive message to the Muslim world about America and the religious diversity in America," said Ibrahim Hooper, communications director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim advocacy group.

Actually, here's the full report (PDF). Postmortem showed only three of the dead had blood alcohol levels over .10. Four of the surviving passengers tested below .10 (the other 18 tested negative), but this was two to three hours after landing, so they may have also been impaired. The main cause of deaths was the backdraft and fire spread after the exit doors were opened, which fed fresh oxygen to the fire.

re: #98 Wild Knight
The biblical Hebrew for Philistine is "Peleshet" or "Peleshti" that may come from the root p-l-sh that means "invader". This may be speculative, but it is a reasonable etymology, since the Philistines seem to have moved southward from the Aegean Islands around the 13th century BCE looking for a new place to settle.
They tried Egypt first, but were driven off by a Pharoah (maybe Ramses III -- not sure) and then moved a little to the north and settled in what is now the Gaza Strip.
Herodotus may have confused them with the Phoenicians, who were in what is now Lebanon.

anyone..........who calls Israel Palestine, is realy wanting to "erase the historical ties of the Jewish people to the region"and which community college do you attend?
Er... yes, I know all this. However, Hadrian got Syria Palestina from the Greeks who called it he syria he palaistina (can't get Greek to work well). apparently, the earliest I traced this appellation is to Herodotus. I'd like to know where Herodotus got it from. Did he get it from an indigenous source or is a purely Hellenic word. If it is a purely Hellenic, it would make the Palestinian claim to statehood extremely tenuous and ironic given that they do not have a native word for their alleged state.
I study at the university of Malta, that island in the mid-Mediterranean of which I am a native.

Thanks. I was hoping that someone knows, beyond all shadow of doubt, where Herodotus got it from. Nonetheless, it is clearly unwarranted for the "Palestinians" to base their unwarranted claims for statehood in the region on this appellation. There is clearly no connection whatsoever.
But I'd still like to know where Herodotus got it from...

I think the real issue, Charles, is that you put up a road block for stage 2. There should be no reason why anyone would have a problem with stopping fascists from taking root- unless, that is, they were sympathetic. I think it's natural, from their perspective, that the fascists and their friends would be disappointed you ruined their plans. They're sore losers.
