I laughed, Take ‘em where you can get ‘em.

For anyone in the greater DC/BWI area, a plane load of troops is arriving at 6PM tonight at BWI, International gate.

Come on out and help welcome them home.

The biggest welcome home I ever got was in Bangor, Maine in ‘91 after Desert Storm. Some guys from the VFW were handing out beers. Was a blast.

Somebody many threads ago posted a YouTube of (I think) Jay Leno who had a morse code expert and a yuppie with a cell phone in a contest to see who could transmit a message first.

The message was something like “where can I get the best deal on car insurance?”.

Syrian President Basher Assad met with Hamas leader Khaled Meshal Saturday morning, where he congratulated him for the “victory achieved by the Palestinian resistance in Gaza”, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on Saturday.

According to the article, Assad told Meshal, currently in exile in Damascus, that the Palestinian peoples’ response to Israel Defense Forces operation “Cast Lead” was evidence of their “commitment to their inalienable rights to their land and homes, and of their deep faith in their ultimate victory over occupation and aggression.”

Also - dog training teaches you how to deal with situations rather than rely on some pre-programmed sets of commands/responses.

Today The Nation has a 1/3-page ad calling for Obama to “negotiate with the Taliban” and get us out of Afghanistan. Signers include the lovely Laila al-Arian.

This is the same magazine that prides itself on being a staunch defender of women’s rights.

One of the signatories that took me by surprise was Wallace Shawn.

Yes, that Wallace Shawn.

Laila al Arian is a producer in Washington DC for Al Jazeera English and is the daughter of Sami al Arian the convicted terrorist enabler of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Ms. Arian keeps her terrorist father under house arrest—she promised— like we will probably all do with the GITMO people!

Hello everyone!
Just finished reading a Bob Herbert (yech) editorial from the NYT. He is swooning as are all the commenters over our new, YOUNG, president. So, I had to put my two cents in…
I think Obama is neither handsome nor a good leader. I think he is arrogant and his hubris will bring him down—later rather than soon enough. It is unfortunate. it reminds me of the fans who scream for their favorite rock star—and sleep with him or her if just to get an injection of that pizazz they want.

This kind of hero worship is VERY childish. There is no hero there to worship. The amazingly unselfconscious behavior is stunning. Mr. Herbert uses the Obama quote “We remain a young nation,” from the Inaugural Address, “but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things.” …should be looked at again. We are a young democracy? No. We aren’t. However, in our younger days, we had high ideals, and no, we shouldn’t put those “childish” things aside—not for a flash in the pan, 48 year old, 4-years at most prez, African-American man who has no track record of accomplishment, no transparency in either his personal or professional life, and on top of all that—only has contempt for those who disagree with him—the lip service right now when a consensus is needed will vanish. One day, if the NYT still exists, we may see an editorial asking “Who’s that man behind the curtain” but the NYT has helped with the wizardry and we’ll all realize that we’re not in Kansas any more.

Here’s more about Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals”, which is Obama’s textbook for wielding power [Link: en.wikipedia.org…]

“Outlining his strategy in organizing Alinksy (sic) writes:

“There’s another reason for working inside the system. Dostoevski said that taking a new step is what people fear most. Any revolutionary change must be preceded by a passive, affirmative, non-challenging attitude toward change among the mass of our people. They must feel so frustrated, so defeated, so lost, so futureless in the prevailing system that they are willing to let go of the past and change the future. This acceptance is the reformation essential to any revolution. To bring on this reformation requires that the organizer work inside the system, among not only the middle class but the 40 per cent of American families - more than seventy million people - whose income range from $5,000 to $10,000 a year [in 1971]. They cannot be dismissed by labeling them blue collar or hard hat. They will not continue to be relatively passive and slightly challenging. If we fail to communicate with them, if we don’t encourage them to form alliances with us, they will move to the right. Maybe they will anyway, but let’s not let it happen by default.”

Alinsky codified and wrote a clear set of rules[3] for community organizing. His rules for radicals are now used as key tactics to learn in the training of new community organizers.

I think there are a large portion of the American people who will NEVER believe that things are hopeless. Obama can beat the drum but American’s are generally optimistic and eventually the steady drumbeat of depression will wear thin. Negativity only goes so far. Obama intends to push that limit but he will fail and be swept out of office in 4 years when he has bankrupted the country. My only concern is that the more damage he does, the longer it will take to recover.

WASHINGTON — President Obama, seeking to broaden the appeal of his signature initiative, said Saturday that a proposed $825 billion package of spending programs and tax breaks was critical not only to turn around the economy but also to rebuild the nation for a new era.

In his weekly video address, posted for the first time on the White House Web site, Mr. Obama made the case that the package would help students go to college, protect workers from losing health care, lower energy bills and modernize schools, roads and utilities.

We are so screwed. How is this going to stimulate the economy?

re: #216 Iron Fist

Gun show report. It was crowded today. There was a long line out of the door, and most every table was occupied. that is pretty much what I expected. The selection was mixed. There were AR-15/M-4s all over the place, including several people walking around with their weapons available for private sell. The only thing that was unusual here was a couple of dealers who had AR-15/M-4 variants that fed from the top in 5.7. They used FN mags from the P-90. I’d never seen those before. I didn’t realize that anybody made them.

Lots of pistols (there always is), but nothing terribly unusual. Prices were better than I expected, really. There were a couple of Para-ordnance .45, a P12 and a P14, both with alloy frames.. The P12 was nearly new, but the P14 was well used. Both were $500, which wasn’t a bad price, but I don’t like the alloy frame.

There wasn’t much in the way of bargains to be had. I found a little something something at a real good price, so I’m happy. Prices weren’t outlandish for the most part. You could find something at a reasonable price if you shopped around a bit.

The one thing that really stood out had nothing really to do with guns. There was a fucking Confederate Hammer Skinhead wearing colors there. That was the first time I’d seen that at a gun show. It’s kind of disturbing that he felt comfortable enough to wear them. I didn’t see him buy anything. If I were a dealer, I don’t think that I’d feel comfortable selling him a gun. He’s got a right to believe that bullshit if that’s what he wants, but I don’t see as I’m obliged to accept his business.

Ammo availability?

The most important task for Obama (a la Alinsky) right now is to impress upon the American people how hopeless everything is with the current capitalist system. To support revolutionary change, people must believe that everything is hopeless.

Limbaugh must be isolated and polarized. The GOP must abandon him to achieve consensus with the new regime in solving the nation’s problems. Resistance is futile. They will be assimilated. And leading the GOP “consensus” builders? John McCain.

The Urgency of Patience

Posted: 11:19 AM ET

“Our CNN colleague, David Gergen, was giving a seminar on presidential speechwriting the day before the inauguration, and he said something that stuck: “One of Barack Obama’s biggest challenges,” he said, is to “keep patience alive.” That original turn of phrase, keep patience alive, brought me back more than 20 years, to a rally I covered in Harlem, for the man whose mantra was “keep hope alive.”

The event, on Malcolm X Boulevard, was for Democratic Presidential Candidate Jesse Jackson. To be a Jackson supporter required a lot of hope and patience. Jackson was late, as usual. Very late. The crowd waited for a half hour, an hour, an hour and a half. Patience was running out. To prevent a mutiny, the organizers started a chant of “Run Jesse, Run.” One supporter finally lost patience and left muttering “Damn Jesse, Damn.”

Attending the inauguration of Barack Obama required enormous patience among the million plus who attended. Getting into the inauguration grounds, ticket in hand, took hours. And there were very few good views to be had once you got beyond the gates. But that didn’t matter.

Listen to the words of a leading technology executive named Robin Richards, who sent this text message to a CNN friend from the inauguration stands that day. “A sense of pride and civility between all American people at levels I have not ever experienced. Hope is the loudest sound.” That from a Republican who did not vote for Barack Obama.

Mr. Obama has inspired hope among a wide variety of Americans. And hope and patience are, of course, connected. If the spirit of the crowds at the inauguration was any indication, he’ll get some time to make things happen. But how patient should the American people be?”

“That’s what we want from President Obama, and the Congress. To do everything in their power to heal the country, with a balance between urgency and patience.

When I got on a plane in Atlanta headed for the inauguration I asked the pilot what he thought of that landing in the Hudson. How about that skill! “The hand of God was involved,” answered the pilot. The hand of God? Wait. That’s not the answer I was looking for. I wanted to hear this pilot tell me something like, “well, that’s what we’re trained to do.”

I wanted the pilot to tell me it was all about skill and passion and commitment. That’s what I want to believe about air safety. That’s what I wanted to believe when the surgeon who took my 4-day-old-daughter into the operating room. And that’s what I want to believe about Barack Obama and the new administration. That skills and sense of purpose possessed by President Obama, his team, and the members of the Senate and House, will guide us to a safe landing and lead our nation to a healthy recovery.

The founding fathers did not create a system of government that can quickly and safely bring down a plane whose engines have been knocked out by geese. They did not create a system of government that can, with minimal deliberation, open up the stomach of a four day old child. And yet the situation is clearly urgent. America is hemorrhaging jobs.”

Read It All if you want get nauseous.

So Caroline isn’t worthy of being in the Senate, for multiple embarrassing reasons. But her endorsement of BHO was useful. Another useful….

A pastrami sandwich would be a better Senator than old’ Sweet Caroline…She did not want to face the opening of her “closet” that she knew was coming….the fact that she was even considered is pathetic. No offense to her, but having the last name of Kennedy is not a qualification to be a Senator.

I personally got my information from an 18 year HM1, though now that I’m looking I can only find a few personal accounts and then of course the following information.
So my fun fact may not be so fun after all.

[Link: www.discoverthenetworks.org…]

“Clinton’s loathing of the American military led to his failure in his primary responsibility: the protection of the American people. His actions with regard to military preparedness speak for themselves. In less than three years, deployments increased while manpower decreased from 2.1 million to 1.6 million. That decrease was the foundation upon which stood Al Gore’s purported “reinvention” of government. Of the 305,000 employees removed from the federal payroll, 286,000 (or 90%) were military cuts. The statistics for America’s defense during the Clinton years reveal the deep-seated animosity of the administration toward those who served in the military. The Army was cut from 18 divisions to 12. The Navy was reduced from 546 ships to 380. Air Force flight squadrons were cut from 76 to 50.

While the U.S. military was used as a ‘meals on wheels’ service by the Clinton administration in its nation building adventures, the military had its own humanitarian crises at home on its own bases. The pay freeze instituted by Clinton was imposed on a military in which 80 percent of all troops earned $30,000 per year or less. Food stamp applications soared and re-enlistment rates dropped.”

If the Dems try to push the “Fairness Doctrine”, it will backfire. Obama did not get 100% of the vote, he barely got 50%. For someone who is always talking about coming together and doing things on a bi-partisan basis, he sure takes the “my way or the highway” route when it suits him. It always cracks me up when the left says the right is responsible for the polarization in this country….they never bend and make the right pay if they ever do, just ask McCain…..they trashed him and he was a “good” Republican……

Don’t be naive. Obama’s not dumb. I supported GWB and I voted for him twice. But, more than a few of his decisions bothered me and I feel he made many mistakes while in office. I think history will be kinder to him than the current negative opinion that seems to be hanging around his neck. He may have been wrong on somethings, but I get the feeling from him that he did the things he thought were good for the country, even though it was unpopular. He used his conscience and his belief in his sworn duty to make decisions. I fear that we have another President now that has no beliefs and will move his morals and “core beliefs” as the opinion polls and image makers dictate. We better get used to another non-stop campaign a-la Clinton with President Obama….he will think more about how he will do in the opinion polls and the salons of the Upper Westside when he makes a decision than what’s in his heart. Perhaps I am wrong, but I do not a see man with deep beliefs sitting in the White House at this time. I see a shallow egomaniac.

They had to replace the main bearings on one of the shafts because the engineering division decided to gundeck the oil-sight measurements for that bearing housing and bearings. Had to cut a HUGE hole through multiple decks to remove and replace it all. And the Navy had to pay for it all because the bearings are leased from the manufacturer, supposedly too expensive to buy outright.

We left behind the rest of the battle group to relieve you by going through the middle of a typhoon. They wisely went around it.

anybody like Belgian beers?

Why are they so high in alcohol ?
( not complaining, just wondering )

All those waffles tend to absorb the alcohol, thus they need more.

It’s much easier to swallow decisions you disagree with if they come from somebody with core beliefs.

Your post was right on the money, though.

Had a ‘Delirium Tremens’ once, didn’t like it much, too thick. I also don’t like Guinness-like beer.
Which is kinda cool as I later found out that I have an intolerance of certain beer related amino acids.
So I changed to lesser quantities of whiskeys.

I heard about some of that, didn’t know what the problem was.
Crew of Hancock forgave you … you only cost us 48 hours.
You could have heard a pin drop on the flight deck when the Captain announced that we were probably going to have to miss Australia and cover another line period.
Hancock herself had a bent shaft, which would have required cutting the keel to fix (Kamikaze, battle of Leyte gulf).

re: #386 Desert Dog

I see a shallow egomaniac.

i agree,
i wasn’t happy w/ all of pres. bush’s decisions either, but overall, i think he was a fine decent person who had the best intentions to serve and protect our country.
i also agree w/ you regarding o. he is a shallow egomaniac.
and he has a hardcore socialist agenda he is going to try to foist on us.
as he galvanizes power for himself.
unlike pres. bush, the o has his best interests at heart, not ours.
no matter what double speak platitudes he uses to try to deceive us.
his change will not be good.

re: #93 FurryOldGuyJeans

The Onion MUST be writing for the AP now.

Notice the smug look on Pelosi’s face in the picture accompanying the article?

WASHINGTON – Barack Obama opened his presidency by breaking sharply from George W. Bush’s unpopular administration,

(by closing off any unflattering press questions)

but he mostly avoided divisive partisan and ideological stands. He focused instead on fixing the economy, repairing a battered world image and cleaning up government.

(which he seems ready to do by speech alone)

“What an opportunity we have to change this country,” the Democrat told his senior staff after his inauguration. “The American people are really counting on us now. Let’s make sure we take advantage of it.”

(Before they discover we have feet of clay)

In the highly scripted first days of his administration, Obama overturned a slew of Bush policies with great fanfare. He largely avoided cultural issues; the exception was reversing one abortion-related policy, a predictable move done in a very low-profile way.

(“low profile” means largely ignored by the press, who certainly know what’s good for them, If you take my meanin’)

The flurry of activity was intended to show that Obama was making good on his promise to bring change. Yet domestic and international challenges continue to pile up, and it’s doubtful that life will be dramatically different for much of the ailing country anytime soon.
(The flurry of activity was intended to placate the masses; please don’t expect miracles)

The rest of the story tells how Obama is trying to pander to both sides, seems to believe that he has a line-item veto, and is not like Bush or Carter.

Good luck Obama. I hope you have no crises while in office. You have no idea how I pray that you have no crises during your term; sort of like praying that the spare tire will hold until you get to the next gas station. Please. No bad things for the next four years. Please let this gullible, inexperienced, Chicago politician have an easy term. Please lord, I’ll take the gloating of the Democrats and the left, just please, go easy on America.

Omigawd - i hope she was ok and didn’t ahhe to go to the vet!

Thats another thing, people have no idea that dogs, especially toung ones, even more so puppies, need to be watched 24/7. One’s gotta be totally aware of what they’re up to - and they crave attention!
Madame, when she was little and thought it was time someone played with her, went and splashed the water in the drinking bowl all over the place. That got our attention pdq!
She lived an adventurous life - thank God our vet was always at the end of the telephone!

My last doggie was really a wolf and she lived in the house with me almost all the time. I never left her anywhere. She was as good as a dog could ever be and never chewed anything. I think the socializing is the important thing. I also knew a wolf that was kept on a chain in a yard and was utterly hostile. I do so miss her. She finally got very old.

They say Obama is pleasing everyone because they are only looking at his goals, not his actions. Everyone wants prosperity, but people disagree strongly on how to do it or what it means. But Obama is “fixing the economy.” Who could be against that?

In contrast, they say Bush was divisive because they always focused on his actions, not his goals. Everyone wants peace, but disagree strongly on how to do it or what it means. Bush was “going to war.”

My two cents:

Every day I pray dearleadero will just fade away quietly…perhaps even suddenly step down to avoid being exposed for the corruptocrat he is.

(yes, I know that would leave us with Biden, but I feel he’d do significantly less damage to our country….he’s in bed with the credit card companies…so he must at least appreciate some kind of free enterprise…)

I do not trust dearleadero…I am fearful of him because he is a socialist.

I’m perplexed that women (and Chris Matthews?) find him attractive…I find him creepy and fey…I also pray I won’t have his shaved bitch-t_ _ _ shoved in my face for four more years.

sigh.

Yep.

In MN Franken leads by a few hundred votes. 65,000 voted 3rd party.
In FL 2000 GWB won by 500+ votes, thousands voted 3rd party.
In WA ‘04 Gregoire won by 133, 70,000 voted 3rd party.
In 1992 Clinton won by 6 million votes, Perot took 19 million.

We first need to clarify the conservative message and stop the bleed out to the 3rd parties.

Voting 3rd party is a thrown away vote…..
Might just as well save time and vote for the Democrat outright.
I don’t really blame these 3rd party voters however because I have a special advantage over them…… I’m a summa cum laud graduate of the 2nd fucking grade……

Near as I remember, PRO-Gress means “Moving Forward.” If this is true, it presumes a definition of CON-Gress, the body Pres. Obama will have to rely on to pass and implement his programs.

As to other matters - I have actually MOVED DOWN in cell phones in the last week. My MotoQ went to another employee who will use the internet features more. I moved down to a Pantech “Slate.” Actually a good basic phone + text machine, the profile of a BlackBerry - Thinner. I call it my “HalfBerry.” Doesn’t suck.

Faxed same via h/p 640. Amazing how some folks using computers for years are “Verrry” Competent in some programs, not so in others.
