“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.”
— John Stewart Mills

I posted a love note at al GRUAD regarding their “special reporting” on the alleged war crimes by Israel in Gaza:
How do you know the facts do not support this report?
In 1941, over the space of just a few months, Hitler’s SS killed over a million civilians in Russia using little more than a few hundred soldiers with standard infantry weapons. It follows that had Israel focused even 10 soldiers to commit war crimes, in 21 days, with even minimal planning, at least ten thousands Palestinian civilians would be dead.
This is without resorting to cutting edge weaponry like drones, planes, tanks and artillery. You cannot have it both ways, accusing Israel of a vile war crime because she has precision weapons and then not note the absence of tremendous casualties when the very same weapons are not abused.
1200 dead from the fighting is nothing to celebrate but, if Israel’s estimates that well over 3/4 of the casualties were Hamas (they do not wear uniforms, soldiers have to guess. It is also established fact that Hamas men habitually use ambulances to transfer fighters about and their leaders hid in Shifa hospital throughout the war) one must state the obvious: Israel did everything she could to minimize casualties, if it were otherwise there would have been 45,000 dead.
Then add the fact that Hamas, like Hezbollah, has specially trained liars to fabricate false claims of war crimes against Israel, then all you need are journalists willing to swallow their horse manure without question. Let us just stipulate the obvious, the Guardian has an unlimited supply of such useful idiots.
The goal is to have the press make the accusation, the facts are never born out. How is it possible for an army so disciplined to fight a war for three weeks inflicting 1200 dead using the most powerful convention weapons in the world today and simultaneously lack all semblance of fire discipline with regard to ambulances and hospitals? Guardian readers trust the razor sharp eyes that can ALWAYS see a Jewish atrocity where none exists to keep them on a steady diet of hatred of Israel and delegitimization of of the Jewish state (will you ever apologize to Israel for calling the 2002 battle of Jenin a massacre?) .
How nice you partially blame Hamas’ outrageous conduct as the war crimes they are. You still leave out the one key fact- Hamas’ rockets precipitated the war. No rockets, no war. Then you leave out the other obvious truth: if maniacs who believed the UK had no right to exist, fired rockets from Slough into London, your reporting of the matter would be much different.
But this is the Guardian, what more can one expect?
Here is my prediction: there may be an investigation but the claims will be disproven or prove to be false.

re: #4 planes86
I have a question for everyone, and I honestly don’t know, so please don’t get mad at me. Whats wrong with Ron Paul?
Basically there a re a few things ‘wrong’.
First of all he is an isolationist. He advocates that the USA should stop spending any money or time on any other country. Money for other nations is wasted. That would include all foreign aid. It is ironic that he serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Now perhaps you agree with that notion. If so, then for you there is nothing wrong with Ron Paul. However most of us understand that the USA is not alone on this planet, and when goes on in Europe, or Asia effects here at home.
There have always been isolationist’s. Even before WW2. They were the ones that fought very hard for the USA to stay out of WW2.
Today they would be anti war in Iraq. Interestingly they would be also against any aid to African countries to help stop AIDs.
For me, that is the most harmful thing ‘wrong’ with Ron Paul.

The real crime concerning Michelle Obama’s inaugural gown was she was victimized by a designer who knew NOTHING about designing gowns for dancing.
Poor First Lady Michelle kept having to yank her dress around or hike it up to keep President Obama from stepping on her hemline and tripping both of them up.
Sorry, choosing a dress for 16 “first dances” on the basis of anything but function, on such an occasion, was dumb.

You’re not right about who’s the actual, primary author of 1633 - really, I promise, it’s Eric Flint. David wrote a lot of it - you can tell, because it’s not sentimental and it actually works on a plot level. And the naval material is correct.
Flint’s a better writer, when he’s not annoying the snot out of me, but he’s the alt-history type. And, to be accurate, even Eric Flint isn’t trying to say that some specific thing could have been avoided (though he is launching a marxist revolution in Italy in 1635, grrrr).
David Weber has much better sense.

For me, the most harmful wrong thing about RP is his fanbase. These technolibs and diggbats gamed and cheated every single poll online, in magazines, on TV, and perhaps even on bathroom stall walls. They did it openly, brazenly talking about their exploits in their forums, and making open plans for more. I don’t believe for a minute that RP and his supporters came from grass-roots, but that the RP candidacy sprang from the mind and pocketbook of George Soros, for the express purpose of splitting the Republican party. Their tactics were the same as those used by ACORN and the classless, ethos-less Democrat college-brainwashed O-bots. The problem with the RP’ians, they gamed and cheated all the polls they could get their cheeto-stained fingers on, then they began BELIEVING THE POLLS! So they’re not only slimy and sneaky and tricksy…but they’re gullible enough to fool themselves! There was nothing at all about the RP campaign that was believable.
I may be crazy, loony, and worse, but I also believe that the McCain campaign was funded by Soros and designed to lose.

From the WTF files:
Most states lag on teen dating violence laws
Examples they cite?
National surveys have estimated that one in three youths experiences dating abuse at some point during their teens — incidents ranging from a slap on the cheek to homicide.
Um, quite a gamut there. Are they implying that some states don’t have laws covering things like assault, battery, rape, or murder?
What it’s really about:
The new report gives states lower grades if their laws block minors from seeking protective orders on their own, without parental involvement.
So there’s a disconnect between the headline and the text. Look, if kids are being mistreated by their parents, it is despicable, and they should get all the protection needed to keep them safe.
On the other hand, if minors need protection from abuse stemming from a dating situation, the parents should be aware of it!
Or am I missing something here?

Can someone tell me why the U of Del extension service would ever recommend ammonium nitrate for a home lawn after a soil test? Trust me, you go into a store and ask for a single bag of ammonium nitrate, you’ll get some funny looks.
(And the answer is probably that the only other high-nitrogen fertilizer commonly available is urea, which is incredibly high in nitrogen, the smallest size is a 50-pound bag and that’s about a lifetime supply for a half-acre lot.)

Madame Update!
Well - it was all pretty awful this morning and well into the afternoon.
She didn’t eat, she was so lethargic, she didn’t react to the doorbell, she then slept so deeply that she didn’t even notice me going to the kitchen to make a sandwich …
She was so slow during the afternoon walk, as if she didn’t know where she was, or why.
After that, she started to perk up a bit. She’s eaten her dinner - licked the bowl clean - sat on the sofa and kept watch for any intruding cats while it was still light. Just now, the doorbell rang - and she actually went and barked!
She is sleeping now - but her tail was wagging again this evening, and I just hope and pray she is on the way of recovery.
Thanks for all your prayers!

Rural county were my folks lived, meth cookers would move into an abandoned farm house and start cooking. When 30 or so cars a day started going to an abandoned farm house the Sheriff would check it out. Cookers always asked, “How did you find out?”

I don’t think Soros had any hand in the McCain campaign. I think Sen. McCain tried to keep the campaign civil and didn’t want to start the mudslinging against Obama. I think that McCain thought that he was the better candidate and couldn’t believe that anybody would take Obama seriously on Election day. He wasn’t the only one who thought like this. I did too:

Yes, they are scum … it was very expensive to clean that stuff up … we had an old trailer out on that farm for our workers to eat lunch in and use the bathroom instead of coming all the way in … we had to burn it because they said it was too close to the meth lab which you could not see because it was in the wooded area of the farm .. total cost to us …. $8,000 to clean and burn … you cannot just wash that stuff away …

Will Obama Listen to Iran’s Bloggers?
Barack Obama extended the olive branch to Iran’s leaders last Friday in a videotaped message praising a “great civilization” for “accomplishments” that “have earned the respect of the United States and the world.” The death of Iranian blogger Omid-Reza Mirsayafi in Tehran’s Evin prison two days earlier was, presumably, not among the accomplishments the president had in mind.

“I am the Officer”
I have been where you fear to be,
I have seen what you fear to see,
I have done what you fear to do -
All these things I have done for you.
I am the person you lean upon,
The one you cast your scorn upon,
The one you bring your troubles to -
All these people I’ve been for you.
The one you ask to stand apart,
The one you feel should have no heart,
The one you call “The Officer in Blue,”
But I’m just a person, just like you.
And through the years I’ve come to see,
That I am not always what you ask of me;
So, take this badge … take this gun …
Will you take it … will anyone?
And when you watch a person die
And hear a battered baby cry,
Then do you think that you can be
All these things you ask of me?

I just think that if McCain’s victory had been announced late election night, McCain would have called for a recount first. Besides, he’s back to taking money from all the usual suspects (the ones who give almost all their political donations to loyal democrats who have served in good faith), going on the interview circuit to dis Republicans and puff Democrats.

I work with undercover narc cops everyday. The meth lab problem was exploding here in Texas until a law was passed requiring that you had to sign for any pseudoephedrine pills and you were limited to 2 boxes per month. Pseudo is one of the main ingredients in meth production. Since the law was passed we’ve seen meth production down by 75% locally. The problem is that it just moved south and has become a cash cow for Mexican drug lords. The hydroponic weed grows are escalating however and trust me when I tell you this ain’t your grandpa’s weed. It’s much stronger and with a higher THC content. Lots of MJ growers have learned to harvest only female plants and that has become a big problem here in my part of the Lone Star State.

Stimulus idea: How about massive forgiveness of student loans?
Tax rebate checks DO NOT stimulate the economy - history shows that people either spend such rebates on paying off credit card debt, or they simply save them, doing little to nothing to stimulate the economy…
Forgiving student loan debt would have an IMMEDIATE stimulating effect on the economy. Responsible people who did nothing other than pursue a higher education would have hundreds, if not thousands of extra dollars per month to spend, fueling the economy NOW. Those extra dollars being pumped into the economy would have a multiplying effect, unlike many of the provisions of the new stimulus package. As a result, tax revenues would go up, the credit markets will unfreeze and jobs will be created. Consumer spending accounts for over two thirds of the entire U.S. economy and in recent months, consumer spending has declined at alarming, unprecedented rates. Therefore, it stands to reason that the fastest way to revive our ailing economy is to do something drastic to get consumers to spend…
I am in no way suggesting that the lending institutions who manage such debts get legislatively shafted by having these assets wiped from their books. The banks and other financial institutions are going to get their money regardless because, in addition to the $700 TARP bailout, more bailout money is coming their way (stay tuned!) - this proposal merely suggests that educated, hardworking Americans who are saddled with student loan debt should get something in return, rather than sending those institutions another enormous blank check. Because the banks are being handed Trillions of dollars anyway, there would be no danger of making funds unavailable to future borrowers…
Washington cannot simply print and borrow money to get us out of this crisis. We The People, however, can get this economy moving NOW. All we need is relief from debt that was accrued under the now-false promise that higher education equates with higher earnings.

re: #476 redheadredstate
….. not to mention that those with allergies now can’t get decent relief over the counter.

Geithner’s paternal grandfather, Paul Herman Geithner (1902–1972), emigrated with his parents from the German town of Zeulenroda to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1908.[7] His father, Peter F. Geithner, is the director of the Asia program at the Ford Foundation in New York. During the early 1980s, Peter Geithner oversaw the Ford Foundation’s microfinance programs in Indonesia being developed by Ann Dunham-Soetoro, President Barack Obama’s mother, and they met in person at least once.[8] Timothy Geithner’s mother, Deborah Moore Geithner, is a pianist and piano teacher in Larchmont, New York where his parents currently reside. I actually work in the student financial aid field. When “borrower benefit” programs arrived on the scene I couldn’t help but think that they were not helping in advancing the education of young(er) minds. In the ‘real world’ mortgage companies or other lenders typically won’t reduce your interest rate or forgive the last few payments simply because you have kept your account current. You made a deal with the lender when you signed the promissory note and shouldn’t expect anyone else to bail you out or ‘lighten the (debt)load’

Six words? I will simultaneously resist that rule, and abide by it:

Special Olympics vs. Macaca: D is for Double Standard
What do I think about Barack Obama’s Special Olympics gaffe? So glad you asked.
I would normally want to give Sleek Barry some love. And agree with Tim Shriver – Kennedy nephew and Special Olympics Chairman – that he “didn’t want to embarrass or give anybody any more reason for pain or any kind of suffering.”
And the Wall Street Journal is saying that “the real gutter ball goes to anyone trying to score political points off the remark.” Even Washington Post White House correspondent Michael A. Fletcher agreed with an online chatter’s comment that read, “People misspeak sometimes. Apologize and move on”
Yet deep down in my own Grinch-like, two-sizes-too-small pundit’s heart, I can’t help but contrast the kid-glove treatment accorded Obama’s “misspeak” with the brutalization of former Virginia Sen. George Allen for his equally light-hearted and brain-dead “macaca” remark a couple years back. The senator, too, apologized. It was more like a virtual apology tour. Apologies in a statement, and later in person, to the young man he targeted. Apologies to Indian-American groups. Apologies to the public. (Unfortunately – not to actual macacas – for linking them to Democrats.)

House bonus bill is buried by the Senate
Despite the public outcry over $165 million in bonuses awarded at troubled insurer AIG, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) showed little inclination Monday to bring the explosive issue to the floor this week or next. Instead, Reid is likely to delay action on executive compensation until late April, after the Senate returns from a two-week recess starting April 4.
The lack of enthusiasm to expedite the bonus legislation comes after Obama said over the weekend that he didn’t think it was a good idea for Congress to target individuals with tax proposals.
