That's exactly how it went down when I had a heart attack last year. I really, really thought that was it. I faded away and thought I would never wake up. It wasn't bad at all, some regret at leaving so soon, but no fear or trauma. The detached observer in me came to the fore. So this is what it's like, I thought, I've always wondered.
I was amazed when I woke up a minute later; and profoundly happy: I felt like jumping off the table and dancing, hallelujah, another chance.

Aside from that, I've seen the RETURN OF JESUS as a spaceship, being described by Saint John the Divine, a man who couldn't begin to think of a massive starship traveling through space (or the concept of "Space, the Final Frontier").
It could be a look at my own hopes, though. A way to solve a lot of the problems plaguing our beloved Earth would be to visit Mars and the Moon--mine it for resources and all.
Honestly, from a secular perspective, we only have 5 billion years left; as for the religious perspective I'm familiar with: "No man knoweth the day or the hour...." (Unless you were once a subject of the Mayan empire, then it's sometime in the year 2012. ;) j/k)
Live a great and honest life, live peaceably with all men, leave other men to their own devices, and die happy--doing what you love.
(If I have to indicate, here in Adult Land, that I use "men" in the "mankind/humanity/human race" sense, then we've lost the culture wars in a truly fundamental sense (as opposed to the right-wing "fundamentalists" making the news and LGF circuit trying to out Team Rocket the left-wing "fundamentalists" who want us to worship Gaia, the Spirit of Earth (a Greek myth and a cartoon chara concocted by Ted Turner).)

I'm happy and thrilled for anyone who believes in heaven. The comfort it can give people who believe in it as not only a goal to aim for as well as a place where they can see loved ones again is a nice thing.

At my grandad's 90 birthday party (he passed at 97 in 2000), he ended up talking to me about death and heaven which was a little uncomfortable for me because he never talked about it with anyone. He said in his definition of heaven, he would be was sitting a long table, with all the great thinkers, philosophers and sages of all time and discussing politics, religion, ideas, all the things he and my dad, my uncles, my cousins did at every family gathering. I thought it was pretty cool.
He also said that hell was here with my grandmother. And we laughed!

When I was a little girl, I thought that heaven was like the top of my parents' closet. It was so neat and tidy up there. Mom would put my dad's dress shirts there. In those days, they'd come back from the cleaners in boxes and she stack the boxes neatly on the top shelf. And that's what I thought heaven was. You got stacked neatly, all crisp and pressed in a box on a shelf with your name on the front. If God needed you for anything, he'd just find your box.
And for some ill-conceived reason, this was comforting to me! lol

This night is very special to my wife. While my wife is gawjus now, in high school was actually, well, not pretty... and was a terrified, wall-flower type. She didn't really begin to blossom until after high school.
Daughter is everything she was not (at that age), and more; Mom feels, well, successful tonight. I'm proud of them.
Mom is living a little bit vicariously through the girl, but, her youth was so miserable, I am letting her enjoy the moment.

I was not an organism before conception. By that biological process I became human with a biology that gave me consciousness. Luckily I was born healthy which gave me a rather decent mental capacity or state. My existence requires that healthy state which is dependent in all aspects of the human body: neurology, cardiology, etc. Once the organism dies the consciousness ends since it is dependent on a "living state."
Now, I don't argue against people that believe otherwise. That's how I see things in my own world. Some will agree with me while others won't and that's acceptable. In no case do I ever promote my own personal beliefs on this matter since I will readily admit that it is a cold, or as they say, materialist view and one that I've held since I was about 8 years old.

It's unfortunate no one was able to help him understand the basics of Christianity - primarily, we are all sinners and in need of a Savior. If we accept that Savior, He pays the penalty for our sin - no matter how vile, or how unforgivable our sin. God sacrificed His Son so that this would be possible for all of us.
There is nothing more merciful than that.

No Time Machine? I am paranoid about backups, copying files between 3 functioning machines and 3 external drives every day. Maybe because I've been using computers for almost 40 years, and I don't trust them.
FWIW, they replaced the system board on my MacBook Pro about a month ago, and that meant I had to blow away the previous Time Machine volume and start over. Time Machine uses the ethernet MAC address. No big deal, unless I needed to restore from it. They said I would be able to restore, but fortunately I didn't need to. I hope they're right; I'd hate to lose a machine and NOT be able to restore the backup!

OK, serious question for our Christian friends. I sponsored a midshipman at the Naval Academy, a sort of home away from home for the kid. In the 4 years he was with us, he felt like our son and we were like his second parents.
The issue is that he is a Evangelical Christian and is troubled that his second "mom & dad" are going to hell. Short of accepting Christ, how can we relieve him of that burden ? No small issue for him, he's prayed and cried over it. He's in flight school now, but we talk every week.
BTW, neither he or his parents have pushed their faith on us, but I can see it troubles him.

I get that, but don't get the concept of a vengeful supreme being. For example, I could accept the rape victim not setting with God, because she did not accept him, but even that is a little weird. To send the rape victim to eternal torment, seems a bit petty to put a human emotion on it, especially for a supreme being.
I could go on to describe why I don't get the whole sacrifice thing either, but we're getting into some very sensitive territory.

What God did in Genesis was to place Adam and Eve in front of two trees; Life, representing God, and knowledge representing everything else.
God gave them the choice. We all have a choice, if God gave Adam and Eve the choice, we as Christians should respect the choices people make.
The gospel is not a fire insurance gospel, repent or burn in hell unlike many evangelicals miss-apprehend.
Christians should not push, lay guilt trips. badger or coerce. If what we have faith in is true, our sharing is not in vain. But we have to live the life first, and not offended in our gospel.
Thank him for his concern, ask him to respect your choice as God respected Adam and Eve's.

Before you scoff, atheist, there's something you must consider.
One of the following occured:
A. some actor 2,000 years ago followed the Stanislavsky method; he willingly punched 1-inch nails into his hands (wrists) and impaled himself on a spear--after being flogged by the Praetorian guard to within an inch of his life
B. the early christian church around 70 CE was composed of a bunch of liars
C. someone in ancient Jerusalem survived a crucifixion and identified himself as Jesus
D. Jesus was in fact resurrected
A is irrational, B is one of several atheist conclusions, and C is completely impossible barring a miracle. Based on the facts, B and D are plausible and rational conclusions based on one's philosophical outlook on life.
I know you guys hate it when I get so long winded. I'm not sorry. I've actually read your books, studied your philosophies and writings--along with a whole bunch more. I've given this more thought than any of you can imagine.

Hey irongrampa - I've asked this question of a protestant minister (Lutheran) a Roman Catholic Priest and a Rabbi (Reform I think): if as the bible tells us, God is omniscient, omnipotent and benevolent, then why does he allow War and famine and illiteracy?
Interestingly enough, I got pretty much the SAME ANSWER from each of them: God works in mysterious and Wondrous Ways.
I was much younger then and was TERRIBLY displeased with this answer.
Fast forward thirty some odd years and in Vietnam I saw things that I could not explain - some great things and some truly gruesome things. I spoke to a Chaplin (a Roman Catholic Priest) and described in very graphic detail some of those things that I had seen (and done) and asked him the same question and his answer was:"God works in Mysterious and Wondrous ways."
At that time that did make sense to me, because I could think of no other answer which would fit with all that I had learned to that date.
While I truly detest the "competitive nature" of all religions ("choose us or you'll go to hell" type of stuff) I think it's true that there are some things that man alone cannot or at least has not explained and perhaps there lies the hand of God.

Mrs. Desert Dog and I saw that movie last night. It was ok. The science AND religion was heavy on stereotype, but the story line was good. Ron Howard is a very good movie maker. It's a movie, that's all it is.

I think Ovechkin is the player the NHL wants Crosby to be at this point. The league and Canadians seem reluctant to embrace European players, tho'. Crosby can be impressive at times (hat-trick in a losing effort during that series against Washington) but Russian linemate Evgeni Malkin is almost as impressive with a fraction of the hype.
Capitals/Penguins could be the Celtics/Cavs or Lakers/Spurs of the NHL for the next few years.

I went to church with a Baptist family around the same era, 1969 or so, and the whole service was guilting people into marching up front to cry and confess and declare they wanted to get rid of their "black hearts" or whatever and accept Jesus. My 8-year old friend would whisper to me about hell. Fire roasting your skin for eternity, no water, etc....The air of emotional coercion and fear was intense- it was surreal, not unlike these Fellini-esque bits here.
Totally freaked me out and I came home really alarmed for everyone's souls up until the point my Mom looked at me with a raised an eyebrow and I instantly "got" that it was all bullshit. Whew!

Hey irongrampa - I've asked this question of a protestant minister (Lutheran) a Roman Catholic Priest and a Rabbi (Reform I think): if as the bible tells us, God is omniscient, omnipotent and benevolent, then why does he allow War and famine and illiteracy?
Interestingly enough, I got pretty much the SAME ANSWER from each of them: God works in mysterious and Wondrous Ways.
Apparently these priests and rabbis either flunked their theology classes or had bad teachers.
God is omniscient, omnipresent and all-powerful. God's power is limited by Himself—He will not do anything bad or absurd. He created the world (if you are willing to accept the Bible's account at least as symbolic of what happened) without death or sickness or pain or suffering or storms or earthquakes or any other bad or wicked thing. God created the angels and man with the power to love and be good or not. He did this so that we could love and help, not as automatons blindly obeying some instinct or fate, but as true individuals who are freely able to choose our destiny. He wanted us all to be able to love freely by our own choice, not because someone was pushing our buttons. Lucifer, or Satan, chose a way that was less than good—he was the first to discover evil, the absence of good. God never created evil. Evil is a non-thing. Just as darkness is the absence of light, so evil is the absence of good. Satan tricked the first humans into choosing evil or sin. These humans allowed this chaotic force to enter our world and upset the balance of things. We instinctively are repulsed by sickness and death because they are in fact unnatural. For this season, God does sometimes direct the corrosive nature of evil to accomplish His good will. God does not end evil because the only way to end it is to crush the will of all beings with free will—suddenly we would be no more able to love or do good than a blade of grass. There will be a day when God removes from us the absence of life, death, and separates those who favor the treacherous enthralling pleasures of evil from those who choose true love and goodness. Those who choose evil are choosing to endure a hell of their own making—continually desiring that which sickens, kills, diminishes and destroys them without being able to die. Those who choose love and goodness will continually be reinforcing the life given them by God until they themselves are almost gods themselves—the caveat is that they must continue to be good and loving to have such power.

Believe it or not, when I posted this it didn't even occur to me that anyone could possibly be offended, or take it personally. It's exactly what I wrote above -- an oddity. How can someone look at this video and think, "Charles is making fun of ME!?"
And we even have at least one person who says we're doomed to hell, and the video was just showing the truth.
Good grief.

Like enduring an uncle who insists on wearing a lemon-orange plaid leisure suit, so we Christians endure the eccentrics among us. And just as some family members would say we are disloyal and betraying the family by shunning the uncle, there are Christians who think that critiquing another Christian is some sort of betrayal or apostasy.

As a very conservative Christian, I don't think Charles disrespects Christianity at all. He and I would differ on its place in the body politic, neither of us can stand false science as faith promotion in the schools or anywhere, or ill informed jackasses like Estus Prickle. Glad you're bearing up under my onslaught, but you're still misreading my comments. I'm not saddened by your posting the video; I'm saddened by the conclusion that you're blind to the animus you have to Fundamentalist Christians which allowed you to post this video and be oblivious to the possibility that you’d be holding them up to ridicule and scorn. I took you at your word, but it seemed very naïve for that not to occur to you. You are not a naïve person, so it seems inescapable that you are atypically insensitive to feelings of this group of people. It is usually a very strong dislike of a particular group that makes an otherwise reasonably empathetic person so insensitive to the feelings of the members of that group.
If I’m wrong, I’m wrong. But I think it was a fair comment.

Unsure whether you mean you are a conservative who is a Christian or your Christianity is conservative, but either way I find it hard to reconcile your avowed belief in Jesus with your comment that Mr Prickle is an ill-informed jackass. His exegesis might be in question, and his mathematics weak, but his presentation of the New Jerusalem & Heaven is earnestly given and entirely consistent with many orthodox views of his day. Posting this video could not help but evoke derision for the subject of the video (Christ's view of Heaven), the beliefs of the filmmakers (Christianity) and for the participants themselves (fellow Christians). Where do you find in the Word that mockery and scorn equate to anything other than "disrespect" (not to mention hate)?

You’re ascribing a motivation to me that does not exist; I'm not offended, I don't see this thread as insulting.
As well, I did not call Charles a liar or disagree with him (except when he implied I was an anti-Semite). In fact, I said twice that I believed Charles when he said it did not occur to him that anyone would be offended by this video. My point was simply that, to me, it was telling that it never occurred to him because it seems so obvious that it would insult people who believed in the same things represented so poorly in the film. (btw, Charles has not replied to this point at all, but has preferred instead to denigrate me, uhm, for having feelings or something, I guess.)
Also, I twice apologised to “our host” if my comments were disrespectful. I cannot see where they are, but judging from Charles’ ad hominem response, I thought it prudent to apologize in order to allay any misgivings he had as to my motives for commenting.
However, now that you too have cast another unfounded accusation of prejudice at me, I can see that my intentions have indeed been misconstrued. I genuinely regard that as a pity.
So, finally, and again for the record: I am not personally offended by this video. I do not think this thread is insulting. I do not think Charles lied. I do think his dislike for Fundamentalist Christians makes him insensitive to their feelings in a way that is most atypical for him.
I’m not a mind-reader; and neither are you and Charles.

Let me make it clear. There is ~nothing~ in either video clip that could offend a sane individual, and I mean that with all sincerity. The blind-spot is your own if you can see the absurdity that is Beaker, yet not see the absurdity that is Estus Pirkle. Both talk gobble-dee-gook in a fashion that in both highly bizarre and decidedly entertaining. The surreal 70s production quality, the stern looks, the garmets, and the gobble-dee-gook as sold by a creepy Estus Pirkle makes the first video highly entertaining. Beaker singing a very passionate and heartfelt ballad in the only way Beaker can, makes the second video highly entertaining.
They're both nuts.

I do see the absurdity of both videos--they are both funny. But, again, read what I wrote, I never said the video was offensive per se. What was obviously going to be offensive, I contend, was the derisive comments about, and ridicule of, the beliefs espoused in the film that would inevitably follow. It is safe to say that Charles, you and the majority of the lizards are of the opinion that belief in the Bible (in fact, all spiritual belief) is insane, so you see nothing wrong with mocking that belief, but surely you don't think fundamentalist Christians share your opinion of their mental health? There is no doubt that some would find the mocking of their deeply held beliefs offensive. And, again, it's selective ridicule; there is no way that Charles would hold the beliefs of Jewish fundamentalists up to the same ridicule, even though he clearly holds those beliefs in the same contempt as the Christians'. In my opinion, that bespeaks a blind-spot at best; a hypocritical bias at worst.

Perhaps you should discuss the matter with Charles or one of the many Christians on LFG. I can only assume a person's motivations based on what they've said or have written in the past. Unfortunately, Charles has displayed extremely little contempt for the irrational pap that religious people misconstrue as "spiritual". He nibbles around the edges, and this is exactly what I'd expect from any individual who ranks religious faith as having the same epistemological status as rational enquiry.

He's no Christopher Hitchens or James Randi, so don't be too concerned. The day you see me dancing in the streets is the day you should be concerned.
