Video: Whoopi Busts Beck for Lying
Glenn Beck is beaten like a red-headed stepchild by … Whoopi Goldberg. (And he deserves it.)

I am not a fan of the View, but this was a riot! Go, Whoopi!
6 | lawhawk Wed, May 20, 2009 1:25:59pm |
Can they both lose with a cluesticking? Beck so thoroughly needed this (and even this is wholly insufficient for the damage done by Beck), and yet I can't quite muster satisfaction knowing that it came from Whoopi.
7 | Ward Cleaver Wed, May 20, 2009 1:26:37pm |

Beck shouldn't have ever made those comments on his radio show if he had plans on being a guest on The View. This was after he was booked and he slams Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walter knowing that he's about to be a guest on that show -- he not only lied as noted but he was rude. Then he responds by playing innocent. The man is clueless.

Really? Again, not a Beck fan, but if he was told they were reserved what was the big deal? Doesn't mean Whoopi et al reserved them, just that he was told that they were. Is that all they got?
Beck should be taken to task for being far out there and loopy, but not for having been told the seats were reserved.

uh-oh. This whole thing reminds me of something/someone...and, it's not good. Beck apparently goes through a whole fantasy in his mind about his alleged meeting with Barbara Walters and Whoopi G. But, it's all in his head and a concoction of lies. the table being "reserved" for the "exalted ones" -- Barbara Walters? a lie. The claim that Walters' called Beck over "in that voice" (which Beck makes-up the voice of Walters -- as if Beck were an underling of some sort, etc.), lie number 2...And, then when asked about why he lies, he states (more or less) that "he knows" its coming -- in other words, he lies, he knows he lies, he knows he's caught, but, hey, it doesn't matter! Good grief...

Beck wasn't just stupid. He repeated his stupidity. First, he encountered the two ladies. Second, he concocted a lie about his encounter to make them look bad, and delivered the lie on tape, where it could easily be viewed by anyone. Third, they were prominent, so the lie would be noticed and repeated. Inevitably, it came to their attention.
And if you know anything about Whoopi Goldberg, you don't f * * * with her. She will get even, and she has the bully pulpit to do it. She didn't ambush Beck. He ambushed himself. What was he thinking? "I'm going to go on the View and sweet talk the women I just defamed"? What a schmuck!

I followed that war quite closely. It was interesting in the tactical use of trench warfare 60 years after it was perfected on the western front of WWI and 120 years after it had been developed in the US Civil War.
In the process of which both sides learned, at tremendous cost, why major powers no longer base their ALB strategies on static defensive warfare or extensive field fortifications.
Oddly enough, that war reminded me of the Doctor Who episode, "Genesis of the Daleks", set on Skaro at the end of the Kaled/Thal war. That war also had degenerated to trench warfare, with gas attacks, creeping barrages, and the entire Western Front circa 1916 catalog, because the two combatants had so thoroughly wrecked each others' technology bases that they'd gone from energy weapons and strategic missiles to bolt-actions and bayonets. I still wonder how Iran and Iraq avoided Somalia-like societal collapses; I suspect their sudden "armistice" was motivated by a realization that they were close to same.

Given that Ida was a complex life form resembling a highly evolved lemur-monkey, I would offer the hypothesis that sub-primates like Beck and Goldberg are walking, talking proof that evolution as we presently understand it is refutable as a theory.
Either that or the two of them are actually off some previously unknown branch of the evolutionary bush and are somehow directly descended from flatworms.

Nah, that's what Devolution is for. Remember, we are not men, we are Devo.
I remember the episode of Star Trek: TNG where a virus was causing the crew to de-evolve. Riker was becoming a neanderthal (no big reach there) and Picard was supposed to be turning into a merkeet/lemur. The only one who remained unaffected was Data--who should have turned into a toaster, or a Commodore 64.

The GOP is in big trouble if they let creeps like Beck, racists like Buchanan, kooks like Ron Paul and the Creationist fools speak for the Republican Party. wipt?
This young woman was sitting in a club listening to three elderly gentlemen arguing over the spelling of a word. The first said "it is spelled w-o-o-o-o-m-b" The second countered "no old chap, it is spelled w-u-m-b-e" and the third insisted "wrong old boy it is spelled W-o-u-m-b".
Not being able to stand it any more she walked over to the three and corrected them. "Gentlemen, I think you will find the word in the dictionary spelled W-o-m-b".
After she left the three men looked at each other stunned until one of them said under his breath. "That silly slip of a girl has probably never even heard an elephant fart much less know how to spell it."

Well, seats are reserved in the sense that you have to have a ticket before boarding for either a regular seat or an upgraded seat. However, seats are not reserved like an airplane where you are assigned a specific seat and I find it impossible to believe that anyone told Beck this at all. He conjured it out of thin air.
Business class is about $20 more. You are guaranted a seat in this section. There are some extra comforts with Bus. Class. I make train arrangements for my bosses all the time.
From the Amtrak site.
If you've never upgraded to Business Class on Amtrak, you might be surprised at how affordable it can be. Business Class is offered as an upgrade on many of our long-distance and short-distance trains and is the minimum class of service on Acela Express. All Business Class seats on all trains (with some exceptions in California) are reserved. Check out the upgrade options when booking your travel to make your next trip more comfortable and productive.
But they also refer to their "regular" seats as reserved seating, meaning you have to have a ticket, a reservation, before boarding.

re: #158 experiencedtraveller
I have never seen your Doctor Who example. But it well documented how trench warfare in WWI reverbated throughout the culture and arts of Europe and the USA up to WWII.
One of the best first hand accounts of trench warfare I have read is Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger. The casualties were just enormous and constant.
The Shock Of The New by Robert Hughes (both the book and the BBC/PBS series) went into detail about the effect the Great War had on the arts in the interwar period. The entire Futurist school was essentially a reaction to the destruction of the trench campaign, as was Dada. Hughes pointed out that when an entire generation was virtually annihilated in the trenches, part of that apocalypse were highly intelligent men who would almost certainly have been leaders and trendsetters in politics, science and the arts, had they lived.
What's amazing (in an appalling way) is how clueless the high commands on both sides were going in. From Vicksburg, Petersburg, and Richmond in the American Civil War, to Paris in 1871, Ladysmith and Pretoria in the Boer War and Port Arthur in the Russo-Japanese War, they had plenty of examples of what could happen, and should have anticipated the possibility of static siege warfare developing and either avoided it, or at least better prepared to cope with it. They did neither. (The average man-in-the-street might be forgiven for this, but planning staffs are paid to think about these things, and apparently just didn't bother.)
The most appalling part is that in 1939, the French, British, etc., were prepared to do the same thing all over again, and just accept the casualties. Other than the obvious mistake of trying to refight the previous war when the enemy has no intention of repeating a strategy that ended in their defeat the first time around, there's no guarantee that after three or four more years of the 1915-17 style of war, that the Allies wouldn't have faced even worse problems than the troop mutinies at the front in the winter of 1916-17.

Beck is like many show hosts that I really enjoyed when they were getting started. It seems like many of them come unhinged after a while. The Shock Of The New by Robert Hughes (both the book and the BBC/PBS series) went into detail about the effect the Great War had on the arts in the inter-war period.
(The average man-in-the-street might be forgiven for this, but planning staffs are paid to think about these things, and apparently just didn't bother.) ...
Very interesting. I'll have to pick up a copy of the Robert Hughes book. I would also suggest The Great War and Modern Memory o by Paul Fussell who describes how the calamity of the war influenced the music scene by supporting jazz and newer formats.
Of course, "Lions led by Donkeys" is one of the great debates of WWI. Lately there has been a push to review the conduct of the generals in a more positive light. I'm not buying it. Their decisions were monstrous and criminal in their stupidity. Up until 1918 Haig devoted huge resources to maintain his silly cavalry behind the lines in hope of a mythical 'breakthrough'.

It isn't in controlling what they say. The fact is that more people are listening to them. This is where the GOP is heading because it's what the the GOP voters want. I'm already seeing signs of isolationist foreign policy and the 911 Truthers seem to have increased activity. Fox news has also been pushing "why should we care about Israel?" crap. RNC Chairman Steele already tried ingratiating himself with the left by denouncing Rush Limbaugh the opinion radio host, after democrats nominated Rush Limbaugh the honorary head of the GOP. (As if dems get to decide for other people)
Vice President Dan Quayle denounced tv actors or their tv characters ("Murphy Brown" incident, anyone?) which didn't go over very well, because well, it's silly to make fun of tv people.
Only Democrats can make fun of people remember. Republicans are supposed to be the punching bags of funny people, the butt of the jokes, not the ones making fun of celebrities or complaining about their treatment by the entertainers.

Obviously, the party can't control what these folks are saying. But they are getting a foothold because there is a leadership vacuum, and where there is a vacuum, it will be filled.
What is seriously lacking in the GOP is strong effective LEADERSHIP that could miminize or override the influence of the Becks, Buchanans and Pauls. And
I too see the vacuum. With the MSM playing whack a mole on pretty much every Republican, I fail to see how the party can recover.

Excuse yourself, that was a fun episode! "Starship of the Apes!" Plus, Fish-Troi and Spider-Worf were hilarious to see. It was all Barclay's fault, anyway.
Besides, everyone knows Data would have devolved into a Mr. Game & Watch.

336 | Mauser Wed, May 20, 2009 4:04:52pm |
Wow, that was annoying.
Whoopie: "You LIED!"
Beck: "Barbara, I'm sorry"
Whoopie: "You lying sack of Dog Doo!"
Beck: "Okay, I mis-spoke, I came to you, you didn't call me over."
Whoopie: "You horrible man! You liar!"
Apparently Glenn's big sin was saying that Barbara called him over and doing a bad impression of her.
I THINK he was trying to defend himself about the Police and the reserved seat thing. But each time I tried to mention that he had witnesses to back him up on that, they jumped down his throat and drowned him out.
Probably a mistake on Glenn's part, since liberals are quick to accuse people of lying, but never too specific about what the lie they're accusing someone of IS, so they can't be proven wrong. ("Bush Lied, People Died!" "Bush lied about what, exactly?" "It doesn't matter, he's a liar! No blood for oil!") It was really hard to figure out what specifically Whoopie was upset about unless you listened closely, but apparently it was the SUBLIMELY IMPORTANT fact of who came over to whom.
I'm not a huge Beck defender, but I really dislike the wolf-pack mentality and preventing someone from defending himself. Shouting someone down is never a good thing.
Worse was the over-reaction to such a trivial thing. What a waste of electrons to broadcast this thing.
And I thought you couldn't say "piss" on television. Whoopie needs a tape delay.
Only one thing I'll give Beck credit for. He gets some good guests, like John Boulton.

Isn't that amazing. I had to stop when he got to the Thomas Jefferson comparison. He goes from being an ass on his radio program about Goldberg and Walters on a show that he was already booked to apologizing like a child on The View and then back in this video with the crazed "Judge" Napolitano whining and complaining about his appearance on The View. Then he goes as far as comparing himself to Thomas Jefferson.

THAT'S the big lie they caught him in?
THIS is what these magpies spent 7-1/2 minutes whining about?
The more likely reason for the bitchfest is that Bab's and Whoopi's "people" had some seats "reserved" for them on the Amtrak and Glenn made fun of them. And they didn't like it.
How the hell do you fact check that Babs?

Glenn Beck looks very lousy and stupid for (1) egregiously distorting his story about meeting Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters, (2) then appearing on the viper pit called the View with some apparent and foolish expectation that Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters would treat him some respect which they don't owe him, (3) failing to simply apologize for being dishonest, and (4) not shutting up about it.
363 | acacia Thu, May 21, 2009 6:38:29am |
Maybe I'm missing something. The only thing that was incorrect was who initiated contact on the train and he did apologize for that. This is a whole lot about nothing as it had absolutely nothing to do with the point Beck was making on his show. The reservation thing is easily explained as the ladies admit that they were trying - like many passengers - to save seats and Beck thought they were getting special treatment. This is a nothing story.

re: #363 acacia
We could argue about how egregiously Glenn Beck distorted his story about meeting Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters. You cannot argue that it was very stupid of Glenn Beck to appear on the View after he distorted his story apparently trying to cast Whoopi Goldberg and Barbara Walters in a false light. That was an objectively stupid decision. He should have never been there in the first place. Then, when he was called out on his distortions, he should have just apologized for being dishonest, excused himself from the set of the View, and then, remained silent about it. Instead, Glenn Beck is continuing to be dishonest. We could also debate how big of deal all this is. But, I will not argue with you if you don't think it is a big deal in the larger scheme of things.
365 | jimbouie Thu, May 21, 2009 7:54:02am |
Beck quoted Babwa as saying "Glenn Beck" when she didn't? And that's the big kerfuffle? What a tempest in a teapot.
We have a problem in that the only people willing to stand and fight against the marxist/socialist takeover of our country are not acceptable to many mainstream conservatives. And the "acceptable" conservative voices are too gentlemanly to fight effectively. The left doesn't have that problem...they use far left attackers and finesse their own responses.

372 | William Thu, May 21, 2009 8:24:10pm |
The only concession by Beck was that "he came over to talk to Barbara Walters" which was counter to his on-air radio statement that "Barbara came over to me." And he apologized to Barbara.
Pretty irrelevant stuff.
As for "Whoopie," we have her word against Becks' claim that the Transit Police told him the train seats were "reserved."
Also pretty irrelevant stuff, and the word of "Whoopie" isn't worth anything, so Beck wins that one.
Don't much like Beck, or any on The View, but I don't see how Beck lost anything via this episode.
