This would be infinitely more interesting if a few Lizards were liveblogging the event.

I'm going to clean out now. I don't post on iPhone threads, since I work for Sprint. That AT&T has an exclusive on the iPhone makes it impossible for me to support it. So, I'm going to clear off rather than be a troll.

After my Macbook Pro, (2 failed optical drives, one failed logic board, one screen, one battery, one keyboard, all in 2 years), they should change their name to Lemon.
To be fair, they are nice about fixing it, and really rushed the logic board fix, including, it appears, shipping the part over the weekend, especially since it broke the day after I got it back from other repairs.

Heinz creates world's smallest microwave (and you can plug it into your laptop)

It is the world's smallest, portable microwave and can be powered via a link to the USB port on a laptop computer.

The turquoise device -called the Beanzawave - has been created in partnership with Heinz to allow workers tied to their desks to create a warm snack, or hot drink, to see them through the day.

I was walking to Israel in the Gardens yesterday, and we'd been told there was going to be big mob of protestors. As I got closer, I saw a big group of young people all dressed similarly, and I kind of tensed up a little.

When I got closer, realized they were all speaking Japanese and taking pictures of each other in front of the big Mac building. Relaxed.

For those who remember the Suppertanker threads here on LGF....
The ultimate boys' toys: £150,000 replica supertankers which are used to train the captains of tomorrow

The two little boats seen here are replica oil supertankers, used for training captains who want to take charge of the real thing.

They are electronically powered and worth £150,000 - which rules them out as a toy, for those who thought they looked like great fun.

The students at the Warsash Maritime Academy in Southampton are being prepared to deal with conditions on some of the roughest seas in the world.

Hundreds of curious followers flock to Reji Kumar’s home every day to pray and ask for miracles.

Now one of the country’s top zoologists plans to study the rainbow frog. But Reji, 35, who keeps the creature in a glass bottle after finding it while out watering plants, is afraid it might CROAK first.

He said: “My one problem is that this frog does not appear to eat. I keep trying to feed it but it doesn’t eat anything. I don’t know what else to give it.”

The frog was a dazzling WHITE colour when Reji, from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, first spotted it.

Then it changed to YELLOW and had gone GREY by the time he got it home.

Lift worker Reji added: “By night the frog was dark yellow, and then it became transparent so you could see its internal organs.

re: #130 realwest

Every key on your keyboard has an ID it sends ot the OS as a signal. The OS contains a keyboard map where keys are mapped toward characters.
(so SHIFT + S means uppercase S unless CAPS LOCK has been pressed, it's a trivial mapping thing really)
But let's say you want to make your life easier as a programmer for example. Then you may want to switch numbers and symbols around since you use [ and { far more than the numbers. Then you basically edit the keyboard map in the OS (there are tons of utilities for this for every imaginable OS out there). The problem may be that you might want to change the keyboard layout completely (modified Dvorak for example, some of us are really picky). Then something like the Optimus Maximus helps since the keys will actually show what character they are mapped to. It's extra useful if you have specific keyboard layouts for specific applications (modified Dvorak for software development, scientific for Mathematica etc)

California contemplates ultimate reform - no welfare
By Cynthia Hubert %P% Sacramento Bee

Could California become the first state in the nation to do away with welfare?

That doomsday scenario is on the table as lawmakers wrestle with a staggering $24.3 billion budget deficit.

County welfare directors are "in shock" at the very idea of getting rid of CalWORKs, which has been widely viewed as one of the most successful social programs in the state's history, said Bruce Wagstaff, director of the Department of Human Assistance in Sacramento.

I think so. The graphics controller died the day after I got it back from some other repairs. The screen didn't even light up; the system just beeped.
But one problem I brought it in for still hasn't been fixed. It doesn't always wake up from sleep; I have to hard reboot. But then my Vista system has the same problem, although less often, so I think it might be in the chipset. (Both have similar CPUs)

California contemplates ultimate reform - no welfare
By Cynthia Hubert %P% Sacramento Bee

There was a similar article on Yahoo this morning, weeping and wailing about everyone who could be hurt. I was feeling kind of sorry for them when I got to a quote from a person who works in the welfare bureaucracy. Paraphrased, he said "Our goal is to expand welfare, not contract it." I shouldn't be surprised, since obviously his goal is to keep his job, but shouldn't the proper goal of welfare be to help people get off it and support themselves?

The resolution is in retaliation to "Buy American" provisions in President Barack Obama's stimulus bill. Mayors voted 189-175 to approve the resolution at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference in Whistler, British Columbia.

Both turnspawn and turnspawn2 have them and it's unbelievable what they can do with them, something like 35,000 aps to download too. The other day I was painting turnspawns apartment and told him it was getting to be beer-thirty. He punched like three buttons on his iphone and POOFF! up came a google map with little red buttons of all the liquor stores withing a few blocks of his new place. Now that is and indispensable use of technology there!

The Israeli military said the Palestinian fighters approached the border fence between Israel and the Hamas-controlled territory with a number of trucks carrying a total of five horses. The militants were planting bombs along the fence when they were spotted and fired on by Israeli infantrymen. The Israelis also employed tanks and helicopter gunships, the military said.

The carcass of one horse was visible at the scene, along with the charred remains of three trucks.

Trade War anyone?

Canadians angered over "Buy American" rule
Sat Jun 6, 2009 4:35pm EDT
By Allan Dowd

WHISTLER, British Columbia (Reuters) - Canadian municipal leaders threatened to retaliate against the "Buy America" movement in the United States on Saturday, warning trade restrictions will hurt both countries' economies.

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities endorsed a controversial proposal to support communities that refuse to buy products from countries that put trade restrictions on products and services from Canada.

The measure is a response to a provision in the U.S. economic stimulus package passed by Congress in February that says public works projects should use iron, steel and other goods made in the United States.

The United States is Canada's largest trading partner, and Canadians have complained the restrictions will bar their companies from billions of dollars in business that they have previously had access to.

"This U.S. protectionist policy is hurting Canadian firms, costing Canadian jobs and damaging Canadian efforts to grow our economy in the midst of a worldwide recession," said Sherbrooke, Quebec, Mayor Jean Perrault, also president of the federation that represents cities and towns across Canada.

Kennedy bill would make employers provide care

WASHINGTON (AP) - Employers would be required to offer health care to employees or pay a penalty - and all Americans would be guaranteed health insurance - under a draft bill circulated Friday by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's health committee.

The bill would provide subsidies to help poor people pay for care, guarantee patients the right to select any doctor they want and require everyone to purchase insurance, with exceptions for those who can't afford to.

Insurers would be supposed to offer a basic level of care and would be required to cover all comers, without turning people away because of pre-existing conditions or other reasons. Insurance companies' profits would be limited, and private companies would have to compete with a new public "affordable access" plan that would for the first time offer government-sponsored health care to Americans not eligible for Medicare, Medicaid or other programs.

If the poor receive subsidies to pay for health care and everyone will be required to have health insurance...how can any not afford it?

Sounds like double talk bullshit...the tax elevator is about to go way up.

I generally don't like touch screens, but I think I could get over it. I'm surprised for something like traffic that voice response wouldn't be a given.

I heard years ago, the company doing the traffic system didn't want it, even when offered. Nowadays, they have ads on the service, so I could see a company doing it for "promotional consideration". They could get years of (company name based on the one I'm most familiar with)
"Now with voice response, brought to you by Nuance, a leader in speech recognition technology"

Then, they'd just have to get the service to update the messages more quickly. They tend to leave a message about a problem for half an hour after the problem is gone

Think twice about 'green' transport, say scientists
Jun 7 07:45 PM US/Eastern
AFP

You worry a lot about the environment and do everything you can to reduce your carbon footprint -- the emissions of greenhouse gases that drive dangerous climate change.

So you always prefer to take the train or the bus rather than a plane, and avoid using a car whenever you can, faithful to the belief that this inflicts less harm to the planet.

Well, there could be a nasty surprise in store for you, for taking public transport may not be as green as you automatically think, says a new US study.

Its authors point out an array of factors that are often unknown to the public.

These are hidden or displaced emissions that ramp up the simple "tailpipe" tally, which is based on how much carbon is spewed out by the fossil fuels used to make a trip.

Environmental engineers Mikhail Chester and Arpad Horvath at the University of California at Davis say that when these costs are included, a more complex and challenging picture emerges.

In some circumstances, for instance, it could be more eco-friendly to drive into a city -- even in an SUV, the bete noire of green groups -- rather than take a suburban train. It depends on seat occupancy and the underlying carbon cost of the mode of transport.

"We are encouraging people to look at not the average ranking of modes, because there is a different basket of configurations that determine the outcome," Chester told AFP in a phone interview.

"There's no overall solution that's the same all the time."

Funeral held for GI shot at recruiting center
By Jon Gambrell - The Associated Press
Posted : Monday Jun 8, 2009 12:15:29 EDT
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — As a family with a legacy of military service prepared to bury a soldier killed outside a Little Rock recruiting center, Gov. Mike Beebe expressed shock that someone would target the American military so far from the battlefield.

“As bad as it is, people understand when a soldier is killed in combat in a war zone like Iraq or Afghanistan,” Beebe said outside the Harlan Park Baptist Church, where the family of Pvt. William Long gathered for his funeral.

“It’s a little different — shock I guess is the best way to say it — when one is killed right here at home; targeted because he had a uniform on,” Beebe said.

Long, from Conway, was killed June 1 outside the Army-Navy Career Center in west Little Rock where he had volunteered to tell others about his military experience. A Muslim convert once imprisoned in Yemen has pleaded not guilty to capital murder in Long’s death. He allegedly told police he targeted Army personnel “because of what they had done to Muslims in the past.”

A crowd of about 200 packed the church; an American flag was draped over Long’s open coffin, which sat at the front of a foyer. A long line of motorcycle riders, each carrying American flags, parked in front of the church while uniformed military personnel milled around the parking lot before the service.

Long’s father, Daris, dressed in a blue blazer with military medals attached to a breast pocket. He wore an American flag tie and a red Marine Corps baseball cap.

According to the service program, the brief service conducted by pastor Johnny Harrington would include a woman singing “This is My Country” and the presentation of an Army commendation medal to Long’s family.

Pall bearers were from the Arkansas National Guard honor unit.

Beebe said prior to the service that Long’s family was “devastated but obviously very proud of their son.”

Long was to be buried at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock, next to World War II veteran Matthew Leon Summerville. Tombstones in the cemetery include the various conflicts in which a veteran served — World War II, Vietnam, Korea, for example. Long’s family will be allowed to select what to list on his tombstone.

Prior to the burial, practice fire could he heard from the nearby Camp Robinson.

Police arrested Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, 23, of Little Rock, shortly after the shooting at the recruiting center and charged him in Long’s death and with 16 counts of committing a terroristic act by shooting a rifle in a crowded place.

Pvt. Quinton I. Ezeagwula, 18, of Jacksonville was also injured in the attack.

Well, I have my Windows XP preferences set up so that by hitting ALT and SHIFT at the same time, I can "remap" the physical keyboard for inputting Cyrillic letters instead of Latin ones. Thus, when I hit the physical keys r k f d b f n e h f, what appears onscreen are the Cyrillic letters к л а в и а т у р а (klaviatura, the Russian word for "keyboard," whether of a piano, typewriter, or computer).

In Iraq, Colbert shaves head, declares victory

[Link: www.navytimes.com...]

“It must be nice here in Iraq because I understand some of you keep coming back again and again,” he said during the taping of the first show on Sunday. “You’ve earned so many frequent flyer miles, you’ve earned a free ticket to Afghanistan.”

Both his character Colbert (silent “t”) and the real Colbert (pronounced “t”), a Catholic family man, are ardent supporters of the troops. If you can live without an iPhone or wait until they make one that will work on Verizon... do so. I don't recommend AT&T wireless to anyone. The only thing keeping me there now is the few remaining months on my last contract and the rollover minutes. This is also a big negative for me about getting an iPhone.

AT&Ts actual service is ok (aside from the infuriating GSM chatter over any audio equipment) but their data plan seems to be highway robbery and their customer service is atrocious.

Many people who don't care for AT&T have just been getting the iPod Touch and using Skype.

I am holding out on getting a GPS, assuming that I will, in the near future, be able to have all or almost all of that functionality in an iPhone GPS app.

I want it all, in one package.

(Now, they just need to work on the iPhone Kimber app, and I'll be all set.)

Same here. I want one device to do it all. We're almost there.

ALL BUSINESS: Bond-market rout lifts mortgage cost
Jun 6, 8:39 AM (ET)
By RACHEL BECK

NEW YORK (AP) - The Federal Reserve announced a $1.2 trillion plan three months ago designed to push down mortgage rates and breathe life into the housing market.

But this and other big government spending programs are turning out to have the opposite effect. Rates for mortgages and U.S. Treasury debt are now marching higher as nervous bond investors fret about a resurgence of inflation.

That's the Catch-22 threatening to make an awful housing market potentially worse and keep the economy stuck in a funk. Kick-starting the economy requires higher spending, but rising rates mean fewer Americans will be able to refinance their home loans. And some potential buyers will be shut out of the market by higher monthly payments they won't be able to afford.

To understand how this is all connected, you have to think like a bond trader. Inflation is their enemy because it means the purchasing power of the dollars they receive when bonds eventually are paid off will be diminished. The only question is by how much.

I love keyboard remapping. I use it for shortcut keystroke thingies.

It's also quite funny to leave the keyboard remapped if someone else is going to use the computer. The confusion is hilarious!

We may not have the Jetsons flying cars, but some aspects of living in "the future" are kind of cool.

Speaking of which, I finally got around to picking up William Gibson's seminal cyberpunk novel Neuromancer. Published in 1984, set in... well, it never quite says (that I've seen so far, about halfway through the book), but it seems to be set perhaps in the 2025-2035 range. In many respects, Gibson foresaw trends that we already see around us: Cyberspace, hackers, etc. And he looks ahead to things that appear quite likely; humans with technology-hybrid implants, artificial intelligence constructs that are wholly autonomous.

But one funny omission; nobody has a cellphone. The characters keep having to find wall phones to make calls. I say "funny omission", because by 1984 the development of cellphones should have been forseeable by a thoughtful futurist.

ALL BUSINESS: Bond-market rout lifts mortgage cost
Jun 6, 8:39 AM (ET)
By RACHEL BECK

Kick-starting the economy requires higher spending, but rising rates mean fewer Americans will be able to refinance their home loans.

So, what we're all hoping for is a return to the unsupportable spending based on a real estate bubble that got us into this mess in the first place? Color me cynical, but this doesn't sound like a solution to me.

How about a return to living within our means, socking money away in savings for large purchases and unexpected catastrophes, frugal borrowing for necessary but otherwise unaffordable items, and paying off the money we borrow instead of endlessly refinancing ever-increasing debt?

Instead of treating people who live that way like they've got "Sucker!" stamped on their foreheads, and bilking them out of their slowly accumulated wealth.

I thought the TomTom was the worst of the GPSes. Am I wrong?

I don't know; only tried a Magellan. I need to update its firmware and see if it is still as screwy. So far, I haven't used it to go someplace I didn't already know.
It has me get off on an exit road (2 exits lead off from it) and then get back on the highway without taking either exit. I know I want the 2nd exit and take it anyway, which causes it to recalculate. Then, at the next exit, it tells me to keep left (because I don't want to be in the right exit only lane), but if I really did keep left, it would give me 500 ft warning to get across 5 lanes to the next exit, which is the one I want. (For those familiar, this is in Mass, Rt. 128 south to Rt. 3 north in Burlington, and then Rt. 3 North to 495 South in Lowell.)
It also has hung once.
And I haven't yet activated the traffic function, so it isn't changing its route because of traffic.

Heck, at this rate, if I wait another year, the iPhone will be free!

It's somewhat surprising it isn't yet. Apple is making money hand over fist through the tens of millions of app downloads, connection fees, data fees and other service payments the iPhone gobbles up like no other phone. It's hard to see that their offering of the latest shiny thing is a viable business model; I'd think they'll soon be in the same boat as other phone providers, basically giving away the hardware (or close to it) in order to rack up even more service charges

Early adopters seem willing to fork over, though. For the moment, they're happy to support Apples, and I'm sure Apple is happy to take their money.

I'm glad Safari's 4.0 tabs are back to 3.0 styling. And I'm glad to see a highlighted progress bar. I was getting used to the 4.0 beta but those two changes always bugged me.

Tethering, good.

Not if you have AT&T...

They want to charge you $30/month for tethering.

Judging from the number of “boos” in the audience, the biggest disappointment at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday was related to AT&T’s inadequate support for the iPhone.

Specifically, iPhone owners on the AT&T network will not be able to use multimedia messaging immediately when the new iPhone 3.0 operating system lands June 17. Also, Apple did not list AT&T among the carriers who will be supporting internet-tethering service for the iPhone.

AT&T would not disclose why it could not immediately support MMS or tethering. However, an AT&T spokesman told Wired.com the reason was unrelated to AT&T’s 3G network.

“We plan to offer a tethering plan, but don’t have an announcement to make at this time,” the spokesman said. “We absolutely will offer MMS on iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G with 3.0 upgrades in late summer once we complete some system upgrades that will ensure our customers have the best experience with MMS. These upgrades are unrelated to our 3G network.”
