Yep, 77% of the product was sold overseas (just click on the photo Charles put up and you gotta work your way to I think #18 of 25 German products - West and East - that were available for export during the cold war. The East German Lawnmower photo preceeding it was UGLY!

DDR military equipment is interesting stuff to look at nowadays. Blue-gray mushroom helmets, "rain" pattern gear (I had rain-camo mag carriers and orange bakelite mags for my AK), etc. For all their ravings about the evils of "Fascism", when the Soviets took control of East Germany they allowed the locals to keep the pre-existing Nazi design aesthetic almost unchanged.
I wonder how much DDR consumer gear went eastward into the Russian-speaking parts of the Communist block.

These days Tehran looks much like a big boot camp. Just look at the shear number of security forces (in brown or green uniforms) stationed out of a park and their vans and other vehicles parked alongside the street. The aim is to intimidate people and crush any possible protests. The Islamic Republic of Iran has outlawed shouting "Allah Akbar" on the street, is cracking down hard on protesters and journalists, and they are lying to the Iranian people, telling them that the western media is encouraging Iranians to riot. They have outlawed any reference to the beautiful martyr Neda Sultany, and said that her killing was staged.

T is for Trolli: Few items made clear that the culture of East German was often far more bourgeois than working class than the lawn mower. Keeping up with the Joneses was important for East Germans too, and they were very particular about the trimming of their lawns. The typical East German preferred to buy the Trolli lawnmower, and during the early 1970s, around 100,000 electric lawnmowers were sold each year.

Oh, ok didn't know it was an 'Export Schlager', that might change the rarity effect, on the other hand I don't believe that these things had much durability or could hold a users fascination for too long..so it might not have an effect at all.
In any event the design is not too bad for a sixties/seventies device (or for one from the thirties, if they had toasters back then)

Eh, you're not missing much. Imagine something like shooting a really punchy, awkwardly shaped M1 Carbine without sights (the sights on the AK blow goat). They're great for blowing somebody away at 50 yards, probably not much else IMO.
I sold pretty much every military rifle type I owned and ended up with an AR. Of the AKs, though, I did kinda like the '74. Still a little awkward, but snappy and fun, and very accurate too. Mine was built with a Bulgarian barrel on an American receiver with a mix of DDR and American parts rounding everything out, per 922r. I sold it to a guy out west and as far as I know he was happy with it. :)

Making them fairly well would probably have constituted a challenge, even with hard currency coming, the GDR didn't have the raw material resources or the manufacturing capabilities to make anything in a consistent quality for long.

What disgusted me about the AK - I guess that's the right word, "disgusted" - was that the design philosophy behind it was so nakedly on display. Kalashnikov didn't even try to frill it up even a little bit. It is very clearly just a junky, brutal automatic hammer meant to be fired at close range targets by undernourished 5'5" commies with middle school educations. I always felt kinda dirty shooting one. ARs at least look like they were designed by civilized people! :) Of course later on it received better treatment by the Israelis and the Finns and even the Russians themselves, but at its parkerized Carpathian worst, it is just a rotten, ugly piece of work.

AR-10s and the new M-110 rifles are both 7.62x51mm and they still use the aluminum receiver of the M-16. The M-16 should be able to hold up just fine firing the AK's cartridge.

Wonderful metal work////. Cheap, inefficient, and dangerous. The design is a bit better. But why the huge base? I suspect that there was no insulation and they were using space instead.. Cord is on wrong side. Of course. The control is really neat and has been recently been duplicated in miniature by oriental/western manufacturers. But this version is better.
If only they had bread.

I have, not through choice, a Windstream land line and they put you through to repair (I think they call it tech service) after hours and you could listen to that crap all evening/early morning long!

OT question for Apple fanboys enthusiasts:
Was there something wrong with the 160GB Ipod classics? I seem to only be able to find 120GB ones now that are "newer" than the 160. Did Apple's reach exceed its grasp with the little hard drives or something?
I've been putting off buying a new Ipod for awhile but its getting to the time where I need to. The 30GB one I have has never cut it for my library size (50-60 gigs or so), so I wanted to get the biggest one made so I could keep everything on it and put some videos as well. If there's nothing wrong with the 160 I'd like to try to track one down assuming its not an arm and a leg compared to the 120s.

Huh. Weighs more with bipod and etc than an M-14, fires same cartiridge but at less velocity (FPS) and with optics, M-14 has 800+ meter range, the M110 has somewhat better range and weighs more.

I have a really cool old Russian phone, rotary dial with Cyrillic letters. I rewired it to work with my old land line phone service. I haven't even attempted to get it to work with DSL/cable service I have now. I'm going to miss that Russian ring.
Might be fun to get that thing working on Skype, especially if you know anyone in the fUSSR with whom you could webcam.

Not only that, but they now make armored cases for the iPhone so it can be taken into combat. DoD is actually encouraging this sort of innovation, in the same way they now allow access to Twitter. Tweats by troops have proven excellent PR and Morale Building tools, and the iPhone has received a number of apps that have military uses. Nope, never dealt with whatever Windstream is. They won't be in business for long, if Subsailor's "customer service" is any example! I did my pain with Dell. 6 computers worth, to be exact. I was in retail sales, for many years & was patient, to a point. Then it was MY TIME being wasted on thier s***ty product. I did the googles, and figured out how to get it solved. Now, I don't spend much time before the googles.
Life is too short, to spend it on hold for a "customer service" rep. for a shitty comany providing shitty service for a shitty prodduct.

Since then, what had been a terrific little telephone company - where you didn't have to make a call to a tech center, you'd see Dodo at a fund-raiser on Saturday night - has devolved into a "service" staffed by people who have absolutely no idea what "service" means!

For some reason once you have their name, they're less likely to leave you in Holding Limbo. They're afraid you'll call back and ask for the supervisor directly, and mention them. :)

However, regarding the toaster, one notes that it only goes up to "6". Maybe the 5 year plan for label plates decided 0-6 was the proper choice. Any quality toaster should go to at least "10". I do seem to have trouble finding a quality toaster, but that might be because my quality is so great.

The DDR actually produced some rather decent cameras like Praktika and Pentacon. When unification came Treuehand privatized them and so far as I know, they still exist today. Guess the Pre-War heritage of precision mechanicals and optics never quite died.

Industrial goods like machine tools, construction machinery - many. Consumer goods - not so much. Most were sold to Western Germany and appear there in the mail-order catalogs like "Quelle" or "Otto" relabeled as private brand for valuta.

Food shortage was unknown after the fifties. Ok, we lack tropical fruits and that stuff, but bread, potatoes, butter, milk, cabbage, even meat where not goods in short supply and where sold at low and fixed prices. Chocolate was expensive esp. the good one, the better booze and canned fruit but the East-Germans did not starve. At least not the times I remember of the around 30 years I lived there until 1989.

Believe it - these things were made to last. If necessary disassembling was easy to replace the spare and wear parts (ok, who where in short supply). And in the GDR these gadgets where anything but cheap!
My mother still has a "Komet" hand mixer (Well hers it is in fact a RG28 - Ruehrgeraet 28), and I abused it as an electric drill to build model planes and such stuff as I was younger, it is still working fine.
You do not wanna know for what the real GDR drill machine "Multimax" was abused ;)
Hint: as drive mechanism for lawn mowers, buzz saws, grinders are just the common ones...
The polytechnical education system had its impacts! ;)
