And they had a Design Czar!
Quote:
As a communist country, though, "vogue" was an arbitrary term applied only to what the SED regime deemed acceptable. In one instance, for example, the state decreed a simple white vase as being "inartistic," and ordered that it be augmented with a floral pattern. A state Office of Design, created in 1972, served as the guardian of "product design in socialism." It's head served as a member of the East German government on the level of a state secretary -- essentially a senior ministry official.

Indeed
DDR military equipment is interesting stuff to look at nowadays. Blue-gray mushroom helmets, "rain" pattern gear (I had rain-camo mag carriers and orange bakelite mags for my AK), etc. For all their ravings about the evils of "Fascism", when the Soviets took control of East Germany they allowed the locals to keep the pre-existing Nazi design aesthetic almost unchanged.
I wonder how much DDR consumer gear went eastward into the Russian-speaking parts of the Communist block.

These days Tehran looks much like a big boot camp. Just look at the shear number of security forces (in brown or green uniforms) stationed out of a park and their vans and other vehicles parked alongside the street. The aim is to intimidate people and crush any possible protests. In spite of all these efforts, lots of people attend protests across the city and of course many get beaten or are arrested by these forces. These pictures are taken from "Karegar-e-shomali" street on 23/06/2009 7:30 pm

Just a matter of rarity, as I imagine not too many of these have been produced to begin with, after the fall of the Soviets, there must have been tons of people who just hated everything reminding them of the 'glorious years' so they hacked the toasters to death or threw them in the trash. In a few years from now these things will be Museums pieces and as it is you'll find a market for it........

Iranian govt lying to Iranian people
The Islamic Republic of Iran has outlawed shouting "Allah Akbar" on the street, is cracking down hard on protesters and journalists, and they are lying to the Iranian people, telling them that the western media is encouraging Iranians to riot. They have outlawed any reference to the beautiful martyr Neda Sultany, and said that her killing was staged.
I have a feeling this is the beginning of the end of rule by Ahmedinejad and Khamanei, and maybe the beginning of a true revolution in Iran.

T is for Trolli: Few items made clear that the culture of East German was often far more bourgeois than working class than the lawn mower. Keeping up with the Joneses was important for East Germans too, and they were very particular about the trimming of their lawns. The typical East German preferred to buy the Trolli lawnmower, and during the early 1970s, around 100,000 electric lawnmowers were sold each year.

Oh, ok didn't know it was an 'Export Schlager', that might change the rarity effect, on the other hand I don't believe that these things had much durability or could hold a users fascination for too long..so it might not have an effect at all.
In any event the design is not too bad for a sixties/seventies device (or for one from the thirties, if they had toasters back then)

Eh, you're not missing much. Imagine something like shooting a really punchy, awkwardly shaped M1 Carbine without sights (the sights on the AK blow goat). They're great for blowing somebody away at 50 yards, probably not much else IMO.
I sold pretty much every military rifle type I owned and ended up with an AR. Of the AKs, though, I did kinda like the '74. Still a little awkward, but snappy and fun, and very accurate too. Mine was built with a Bulgarian barrel on an American receiver with a mix of DDR and American parts rounding everything out, per 922r. I sold it to a guy out west and as far as I know he was happy with it. :)

Ditto for Lindsey Lohan. Both of those two should be required to gain ten pounds. Only Lilo actually will do that (she's required to for a movie she's been cast in). Fox should follow a similar approach and require Ann Coulter to eat something before appearing on the network again.

Yup, I agree about the design. And I suspect - for hard foreign currency, the East Germans made them fairly well.
Making them fairly well would probably have constituted a challenge, even with hard currency coming, the GDR didn't have the raw material resources or the manufacturing capabilities to make anything in a consistent quality for long.

Scared to death! Seriously that Mattel toy they issued us was bad enough, but to give it that kind of power..........

Sure.
What disgusted me about the AK - I guess that's the right word, "disgusted" - was that the design philosophy behind it was so nakedly on display. Kalashnikov didn't even try to frill it up even a little bit. It is very clearly just a junky, brutal automatic hammer meant to be fired at close range targets by undernourished 5'5" commies with middle school educations. I always felt kinda dirty shooting one. ARs at least look like they were designed by civilized people! :) Of course later on it received better treatment by the Israelis and the Finns and even the Russians themselves, but at its parkerized Carpathian worst, it is just a rotten, ugly piece of work.

AR-10s and the new M-110 rifles are both 7.62x51mm and they still use the aluminum receiver of the M-16. The M-16 should be able to hold up just fine firing the AK's cartridge.

thanks,
even the cigarettes mentioned before (tightly packed, so you had to roll them on the table before lighting them up) are a propaganda thing which apparently made it through the Spiegel editorial. GDR cigarettes (which I had the chance to sample in 72 and 75) were known for their loose packing, half of the tobacco would fall out before you could get them between your lips, resulting in a huge burst of flame when you lit them up.

Evening all!
Can't check e-mail Why? Hell, I don't know. I have Windstream, and I'm on hold. If I hear one more chorus of the bouncy little guitar lick, behind a series of a really gay guy's list of shit I can get from Windstream - while waiting to talk to a real person - oh wait! The little pre-recorded gay guy is telling me I should use Windstream to pay all my bills on-line!
Oops. More silly guitar licks, with the recorded gay guy telling me that I can ask questions by sending an e-mail directly to Windstream!
How cool is that! Ooops. The reason I called the hotline is....my Freakin' e-mail isn't working.
Oh. cool, more guitar licks - no, it could be banjo - nope it's guitar. Whoever recorded the hold music only knew four chords. I hate him.
Oh now he (the gay guy) is reminding me that I can get "lightning fast web service in my neighborhood" by spending more money with this useless picece of shit.
Oh wayt! I can "sign up today" for more services - from the freakin' company that's had me on hold now for over fifteen minutes.
Is the internet pretty much an anonymous way to communicate with my friends?
It is? Okay, here's my take on it: Don't ever, ever do any business with Windstream. Even if, and they don't really let anyone, you could talk to a human being, by the time you get through to a real person, the only thing you'll want to know is who the mealy-mouithed gay guy youi've been listening to for the last half hour is, and where he lives.

Wonderful metal work////. Cheap, inefficient, and dangerous. The design is a bit better. But why the huge base? I suspect that there was no insulation and they were using space instead.. The strength of the weapon, and the recoil. And don't be so sure you know less about firearms than I do, I only really know the M-14, M-16, CAR-15. AK-47 and the 1911 Browning .45 very well. The rest of the weapons that I know anything about (not including knives) is from firing a few rounds at a range.
That still beats me easily. That said, the Army is issuing the M110 rifle derived from Stoner's Ar-25 design. It has M-16 type fire controls, but fires .308 rounds. Here's its info:

Um, sub? While I find your postings to be funny, y'all might want to try calling Windstream back in the morning when there's someone there. Seriously. I have, not through choice, a Windstream land line and they put you through to repair (I think they call it tech service) after hours and you could listen to that crap all evening/early morning long!
Just sayin' my friend...........................!
Hi RW! I can't believe you're up this late! Thanks for the input. What I find interesting is that there's no message saying they're closed. The message simply says all reps are currently busy, and they'll get to me as soon as they can.
It's been a seriously bad week with a number of companies who pride themselves on customer service. Guess I'll give up tonight and try again tomorrow.
Which, as Shakespeare noted, will creep on in its petty pace!

OT question for Apple fanboys enthusiasts:
Was there something wrong with the 160GB Ipod classics? I seem to only be able to find 120GB ones now that are "newer" than the 160. Did Apple's reach exceed its grasp with the little hard drives or something?
I've been putting off buying a new Ipod for awhile but its getting to the time where I need to. The 30GB one I have has never cut it for my library size (50-60 gigs or so), so I wanted to get the biggest one made so I could keep everything on it and put some videos as well. If there's nothing wrong with the 160 I'd like to try to track one down assuming its not an arm and a leg compared to the 120s.

Huh. Weighs more with bipod and etc than an M-14, fires same cartiridge but at less velocity (FPS) and with optics, M-14 has 800+ meter range, the M110 has somewhat better range and weighs more.
Sure would like to try it out though!

I have a really cool old Russian phone, rotary dial with Cyrillic letters. I rewired it to work with my old land line phone service. I haven't even attempted to get it to work with DSL/cable service I have now. I'm going to miss that Russian ring.
Might be fun to get that thing working on Skype, especially if you know anyone in the fUSSR with whom you could webcam.

For floral and realwest,
Thanks so much for your input! Sorry if I wasted bandwidth ranting, but it's been an amazing week. When things go wrong, and you spend a great deal of time on the phone - quite politely I might say - and what you end up with is a basic "kiss my butt, you bought it, guess you own it" response from what is called "customer service" ....well....
heck, it was kind of fun to drop a couple of posts while listening to a pathetic pre-recorded message saying they'll be right with me.

Nope, never dealt with whatever Windstream is. They won't be in business for long, if Subsailor's "customer service" is any example! I did my pain with Dell. 6 computers worth, to be exact. I was in retail sales, for many years & was patient, to a point. Then it was MY TIME being wasted on thier s***ty product. I did the googles, and figured out how to get it solved. Now, I don't spend much time before the googles.
Life is too short, to spend it on hold for a "customer service" rep. for a shitty comany providing shitty service for a shitty prodduct.

Hi Floral! You've hit it "in one" as they say. Windstream is buying up local phone companies all over the country. Ours - in our little Texas Hill Country town - was owned by one family until the last family member (a wonderful lady named Dodo - don't laugh!) passed on.
Since then, what had been a terrific little telephone company - where you didn't have to make a call to a tech center, you'd see Dodo at a fund-raiser on Saturday night - has devolved into a "service" staffed by people who have absolutely no idea what "service" means!

Don't forget the "what are you going to do for me, to make up for this? I have been seriously inconvenienced" request. LOL! If you don't ask, you WILL NOT GET!

That's perfect; the only thing I'd add would be to always ask for their name and the name of the supervisor they're getting for you.
For some reason once you have their name, they're less likely to leave you in Holding Limbo. They're afraid you'll call back and ask for the supervisor directly, and mention them. :)

Some of the stuff (like the glassware and other dishes) actually looks pretty cool. Notice the crappy lawn mower (the Trolli). When I got to that, I thought, "Hey, those wheels are off of a baby carriage." Then you get to the end, and those same wheels are on a baby carriage (the Zekiwa).

Yes, young ladies are the finest German word processors you will ever find.
However, regarding the toaster, one notes that it only goes up to "6". Maybe the 5 year plan for label plates decided 0-6 was the proper choice. Any quality toaster should go to at least "10". I do seem to have trouble finding a quality toaster, but that might be because my quality is so great.

I wonder how much DDR consumer gear went eastward into the Russian-speaking parts of the Communist block.
Industrial goods like machine tools, construction machinery - many. Consumer goods - not so much. Most were sold to Western Germany and appear there in the mail-order catalogs like "Quelle" or "Otto" relabeled as private brand for valuta.

Really? It seems to me as you where talking about another German Democratic Republic than I know.
Food shortage was unknown after the fifties. Ok, we lack tropical fruits and that stuff, but bread, potatoes, butter, milk, cabbage, even meat where not goods in short supply and where sold at low and fixed prices. Chocolate was expensive esp. the good one, the better booze and canned fruit but the East-Germans did not starve. At least not the times I remember of the around 30 years I lived there until 1989.

You mean aside from "Made in Germany" by German Engineers and the parts being over-designed many times? Even if made from cheap plastic?
Believe it - these things were made to last. If necessary disassembling was easy to replace the spare and wear parts (ok, who where in short supply). And in the GDR these gadgets where anything but cheap!
My mother still has a "Komet" hand mixer (Well hers it is in fact a RG28 - Ruehrgeraet 28), and I abused it as an electric drill to build model planes and such stuff as I was younger, it is still working fine.
You do not wanna know for what the real GDR drill machine "Multimax" was abused ;)
Hint: as drive mechanism for lawn mowers, buzz saws, grinders are just the common ones...
The polytechnical education system had its impacts! ;)
