White Supremacist Twins Charged in Mall Bombing

US News • Views: 3,097

A matching pair of “anti-immigration activists” has been charged with bombing a diversity office in Arizona.

PHOENIX  —  Twin brothers have been indicted in a 2004 mail bombing that injured the diversity director of the Arizona city of Scottsville.

Dennis and Daniel Mahon are charged with conspiracy to damage buildings and property by means of explosive, according to an indictment unsealed Thursday and filed June 16 in federal court.

The indictment says the brothers, who live in Illinois, intended to “promote racial discord” on behalf of the White Aryan Resistance.

The package detonated in Don Logan’s hands on Feb. 26, 2004, in the city’s Human Resources Complex. Logan oversaw diversity issues for city employees and citizens, including racial and sex discrimination. The blast injured Logan’s hand and arm. A secretary also was injured, and both spent about a week in the hospital.

Authorities arrested the brothers in their Davis Junction, Illinois, home and say they had assault weapons, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and white supremacist material.

I commented on this last night, and I'm bothered that I don't remember the bombing. Stories about bombs get my attention.

And why did a pair of Illinois nazis back during the Bush administration pick on some bureaucrat in Arizona?

In other words, this isn't some new outfit. It's one that the FBI, SLPC and ADL have been following for years.

There was an article in Reader's Digest once (which means it was somewhere else first, I think) that I wish I had reprints of. I'm going to mangle this, and it said it much better, but it made the point that if you want attention, and to be unique, then do something great or develop your talents. Dying your hair blue doesn't really take work, and doesn't really make you special.

The example they gave was Benny Goodman, who looked like an account, but ruled the clarinet. He didn't look weird; you would have passed him on the street and not looked twice, but he was very special.

I butchered that, but if anyone knows where to get a reprint, let me know. I've always wanted to have my kids read it.

From Killgore's second link in #31

The arrest Thursday of Dennis Mahon and his twin brother, Daniel Mahon, in Illinois Thursday coincided with weapons charges against Robert Joos, a Powell, Mo., man, whom Dennis Mahon allegedly contacted the morning the bomb arrived at the Scottsdale Office of Diversity and Dialogue.

Though Joos was charged in Springfield, Mo., with being a felon in possession of firearms, he is not alleged to have participated in the Arizona mail-bombing.

not OT, merely metaphorical:

IIRC, Charles Shultz had an early Peanuts strip (back when a lot of theology could be found there) where Snoopy was somehow described as the Hound of Heaven.

It's a good function, as long as one keeps a humble eye on the mirror.

Indeed. I favor immigration reform and enforcing the border, but I have no problem with immigration as a whole. I just want them to come here legally, and I think we should be more selective in to this country. But when the movement gets tainted with racists, it ruins the issue for the rest of us.

Nope. I saw Charles' tags.

I never saw your post of this last night, and saw no comments in response to you. But I can - and will - keep remarking on your whinging about how you're being persecuted until you start getting it.

I don't agree with Charles' position on the DHS memo, as you are aware. But Charles is not constantly crying (before anything is said, even!) about how he is being beaten up on.

You see the difference?

My concern is what is showing in many of your comments lately. I am worried.

Yes, exactly. Because it enables the opponent to tag you with the brush of an extremist. It is a pretty neat trick really. Calling someone a racist works the same way. We saw this during the election. Very unfair and dishonest but very effective in silencing discussion.

136 BARACK THE VOTE  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 11:39:00am

re: #76 WinterCat

Okay. But unfortunately, right wing and right wing extremism are not separated in many people's minds...particularly people who are swing voters. We know that democrats will group them because it suits them to do so. But people who are in the middle and only read the headlines see "right wing" and that means republicans to many. So, it is a real problem for the republicans, I think, even if these people aren't republicans and hate the GOP.

I have to disagree, completely.

No-one hears about a Scott Roeder or a von Brunn and thinks, "gee, that's a Republican". No one.
Normal people--and by that I mean everyone, yes, including democrats and liberals and people on the left-- know that 'right wing extremists' bear no relation to republicans or to conservatives.

It's so very odd that republicans and people on the right keep insisting that this DHS report was about THEM, and keep insisting on antics like carrying signs that say "right wing extremist". NO-ONE has called such people 'right wing extremists". The DHS report surely did not.

So why the insistence by people on the right that this report--all about racism, white supremacism, fringe elements-- is actually about them?

Yes, exactly. Because it enables the opponent to tag you with the brush of an extremist. It is a pretty neat trick really. Calling someone a racist works the same way. We saw this during the election. Very unfair and dishonest but very effective in silencing discussion.

I agree. I think legitimate, non-racist immigration groups on the left and right need to come together and push the racists out, and find some common ground. We should all be able to agree on border enforcement. It's a national security risk. I'm sure there are some other areas where left and right could work to find common ground and come up with solutions to our problems.

re: #136 iceweasel

I have to disagree with you - completely.
The overwhelming bias of the media sets an undeniable tone in the national 'discussion' and that tone is that conservatives and/or republicans are always labeled as right-wing or far right-wing. Conversely, this label is never applied to liberals and leftists. Ever.
And this does in fact create a perception in people's minds, especially in the minds of those that are not particularly politically engaged, the very same undecided's that often determine the outcome of elections.
Perception is reality and the media works overtime to establish that perception.

Springsteen is a huge drooling Obot...never grew up...some of his rants sound like a teenager, totally disconnected from reality....it's a disease

Actually, there is a technical term for pathological speech patterns like those found in Blinded by the Light, for example:

Madman drummers bummers and Indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat

The term is clanging. From the Wikipedia article:

In psychology and psychiatry, clanging or clang association refers to a form of speech pattern where thinking is driven by word sounds. For example, rhyming or alliteration may lead to the appearance of logical connections where none in fact exists. This, just one manifestation amongst a more general spectrum of thought disorders, is associated with the irregular thinking apparent in psychotic mental illnesses (e.g. schizophrenia).

Feds make arrests in Scottsdale bombing

"The object of the conspiracy was to promote racial discord on behalf of the 'White Aryan Resistance' (WAR) by damaging and destroying buildings, facilities and real property of both government and businesses whose activities defendants believed conflicted with their goals," the indictment states.

Also on Tuesday, authorities served a search warrant on the home of Tom Metzger, founder of WAR, in Warsaw, Ind.

Metzger's Web site describes him as "converted from minister to Free Thinker, reborn from right-winger to racist."

Authorities hinted last year that the Scottsdale bombing had "commonalities" with other bombings throughout the United States and Canada.

Is there dangerous right wing extremism, absolutely. There are specific organizations and people who bear watching and need to be preemptively stopped before they commit their violent crimes.

Should "right-wing" people like libertarians, 2nd amendment defenders, tax protesters, advocates for smaller government, veterans et al. be profiled as potential right wing extremists? No. Just because there are specific right wing extremists groups (a small population) who advocate some of these same views does not justify painting a watchful eye on the backs of a large population who do not advocate their views with violence or other illegal actions.

If the report had been specific (names, groups, actions), as was the report on the eco extremist groups (which were not identified repeatedly as left wing), then it would have been legitimate. The broad brush approach applied to right wing groups without specifics was useless, other than an attempt to paint everyone with those views as possible candidates for right wing extremist behavior.

I would disagree with you. I think many people, particularly those who don't look too deeply into a story do lump republicans into the mix. And republican leadership is trying to push back on that notion because it is quite deadly for the future of the party.

Now I just want to see them do that when Glenn Beck talks about armed insurrection, or when others mutter about FEMA camps. That needs to be stopped too.

You can disagree. Why not? Have at it.

Bottom line: The DHS report was right. It has been proven so, unfortunately, more than once since its April release.

You can pretend that report was a liberal plot. You can pretend that none of these shootings/murders.incidents happened.

But they did.

Where did I say anything about the DHS report, let alone pretend?

I don't really follow Fox (I think he is a Fox guy, right?) but yes, this cheap talk about armed insurrection is really not helpful. After watching Shawna Forde's video on the border you can really see what a negative impact she and the others like her can have. People automatically link her to all people who oppose illegal immigration and that really is a problem for those people who want to have an earnest dialogue on the subject.

re: #259 opnion

What most people including me objected to in the DHS report was linking veterans with extemism. I know the report used a small percentage or words to that effect, but the number is statistically insignificant, so why mention vets at all?

I have to take off after this, but I want to answer this--

The report didn't say 'all vets' were dangerous.
It pointed out that returning vets are VERY attractive to extremist groups, and that such groups go out of their way to recruit them.

It also pointed out that vets are capable of causing a lot more damage, if they want, than civilians. This is exactly why extremist groups WANT to recruit them. (let's remember that McVeigh and Eric Randolph both had military backgrounds. The military isn't what made them domestic terrorists--but their military training is WHY they were very deadly and in the case of Randolph, very skilled at evasion)

Finally-- white supremacist groups have been trying to infiltrate the military for decades. They do it on purpose-- they want to join up to get weapons/explosives training, and to try to recruit others,

The military knows this and has been policing its own ranks for the white supremacists and extremists for decades.

There is no reason for anyone to imagine that the DHS 'singled out' veterans, or that 'all veterans' are under suspicion.

The DHS memo will become what people interpret it to be. Poorly written. They shouldn't be publishing this stuff on the internet regardless of administration. The driving force behind all this is the Democratic flaw of not addressing their own lack of honesty, integrity, morals etc etc etc. The biased position of the media and their cognitive dissonance about it. It all makes for unhealthy public policy and flaky political positions. It equals Nancy Pelosi.

re: #225 iceweasel

Interesting, isn't it?

The same point has been made about Hitler and the architects of the "Master Race", obsessed with an ideal of 'Aryan' physical perfection.

None of the people pushing that ideal came anywhere near it-- Hitler, physically, is the exact opposite of the "perfect Aryan male", and the people around him also-- cleft palates, limps, humpbacks, clubfoot--
It's profoundly strange.

Here's a crack at an explanation:

Beautiful men can have whomever they want for mates; no reason for them to lose sleep over the physical perfection of their offspring. They also don't need to "unionize" or resort to any collective bargaining. They have near monopoly position over the cream of the crop.

Deformed creeps, on the other hand, need to stick together to rig the rules in their favor. They also want to externalize the rationalization of their failures, by blaming their piss poor luck at getting laid on foreign "inferior" men.

From our nutty Von Brunn: [Link: www.arsenalofhypocrisy.com...]

Today, on the World stage, Whitemen are LAUGHED AT, their women bred by stronger men.

re: #298 buzzsawmonkey

That losers band together to rationalize the reasons for their loserhood and derive what comfort they can is accurate.

Where you go off the rails, however, is in your first paragraph, where you throw in the "union/collective bargaining" language. If it is a metaphor, it is a poor one; if it is intended to describe reality where unions are concerned, it is simply silly.

It is obviously a metaphor; note the scare quotes.

They demand some collective action, the rising in arms, a racial/reproductive revolution. Individually, they are powerless in the mating game, sore losers, no woman's first choice (or second, or third). They seek fulfillment through collective means; because physically they are repulsive by any objective metric, they try to place disproportionate importance on their being "white," the only supposedly redeeming physical feature (in their heads), which they hope will override everything else, if they place enough emphasis on it. They turn themselves into a commodity: "white men."

I sense a strange analogy to the labor union mentality, and the selective pressures dictating what kind of workers are likely to seek unionization. Intelligent, self-confident employees with a unique experience and solid skill-repertoire, rarely see themselves as a commodity. They work on their own terms and set the conditions of their employment.

Mediocre to poor workers, on the other hand, are a commodity, feel like a commodity, and act like one, via unions. They have no special skills to differentiate themselves so they stick together, to bark louder, and often use intimidation to sweeten the end of their deal. Instead of merit, they place disproportionate emphasis on "seniority," which, with time, any loser can achieve.

It's a far-fetched analogy, but not off the rails. And it was used metaphorically anyway.

"Finally-- white supremacist groups have been trying to infiltrate the military for decades. They do it on purpose-- they want to join up to get weapons/explosives training, and to try to recruit others,"

Link?

Are you referring to military in the UK or US?

US.

Here's a 2005 Department of Defense report on the difficulty of keeping supremacists out, which says: "Effectively, the military has a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy pertaining to extremism. If individuals can perform satisfactorily, without making their extremist opinions overt … they are likely to be able to complete their contracts."

Here is a 2008 FBI report which states ""Military experience — ranging from failure at basic training to success in special operations forces — is found throughout the white supremacist extremist movement.""

And finally, here is an article which talks about how its become increasingly difficult for recruiters to keep them out:
Neo-Nazis are in the Army Now.

This isn't the military's fault. The leaders of white supremacist groups have been directing their members for decades now-- at least since the 70's-- to join the military to gain the weapons training and experience they believe they need for the coming 'race war'-- and also to radicalise other troops.

Swatiskas have turned up as graffiti in Baghdad. That's not being left by the average soldier. That's being left by a couple of these supremacist creeps who have slipped through the screening process.

306 BARACK THE VOTE  Sat, Jun 27, 2009 12:02:31am

Here's another article on why the demand for troops has meant that the military has had a harder time keeping these creeps out-- it includes a photo of Aryan Nations graffiti left in Iraq in 2006.

[Link: www.thecommentfactory.com...]

Also, from the earlier article:

In white supremacist incidents from 2001 to 2008, the FBI identified 203 veterans. Most of them were associated with the National Alliance and the National Socialist Movement, which promote anti-Semitism and the overthrow of the U.S. government, and assorted skinhead groups.

All this is why the DHS mentioned vets. Again, it's not all vets and no-one believes that vets as a group pose a threat or are more likely to be dangerous-- at all.

Well, to be fair, Hitchens has seen the "twisted cross" in Lebanon too, and there's a lot of that imagery around the worse parts of European cities. I can't rule out old Baathist diehards.

What might be a security concern, for our armed forces, is if said Baathists hook up with neo-Nazis in our ranks. Suppose team A has a neo-Nazi in it and team B is headed up by a Jew or is majority black. Neo-Nazi (covertly) sends team B into an ambush which kills the leader of team B. There are now spots for promotion which the neo-Nazis can infiltrate.

Diversity office?
Diversity director?

I live a stone's throw from Scottsdale and this doesn't surprise me much.

If it were up to me they'd replace that nonsense with a Competence office and a Competence director. Hiring and promotion would be judged solely upon performance and qualifications, at least to the degree to which that is possible amongst the political animals that are human beings.

Race, sex, creed, color, or religion would be officially banned as criteria.

Now of course that would only do so much good, tribalism being what it is, but at least such an effort would be a legitimate endeavor against racism and other forms of wrongful discrimination, as opposed to the current nonsense which does the opposite.
