Observations of the President's 1st Five Months.
He has.....
1. Offended the Queen of England.
2. Bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia .
3. Praised the Marxist Daniel Ortega.
4. Kissed Hugo Chavez on the cheek.
5. Endorsed the Socialist Evo Morales of Bolivia .
6. Announced we would meet with Iranians with no pre-conditions.
7. Gave away billions to AIG also without pre-conditions.
8. Expanded the bailouts.
9. Insulted everyone who has ever loved a Special Olympian.
10. Doubled our national debt..
11. Announced a termination of the space defense system the day after the North Koreans launched an ICBM.
12. Despite the urgings of his own CIA director and the prior 4 CIA directors, released information on intelligence gathering.
13. Accepted without public comment the fact that five of his cabinet members cheated on their taxes and two others withdrew after they couldn't take the heat.
14. Appointed a Homeland Security Chief who quickly identified as "dangers to the nation", groups including veterans of the military, and opponents to abortion on demand, and who ordered that the word "terrorism" no longer be used but instead referred to such acts as "man made disasters".
15. Circled the globe so he could openly apologize for America's greatness.
16. Told Mexicans the violence in their country was because of us.
17. Politicized the census by moving it into the White House from its Department of Commerce origins..
18. Appointed as Attorney General the man who orchestrated the forced removal and expulsion from America to Cuba of a nine-year old whose mother died trying to bring him to a life of freedom in the United States and approved the pardon of Marc Rich so Clinton could let the felon go free.
19. Salutes as heroes three Navy SEALS who took down three terrorists who threatened one American life and the next day announces members of the Bush administration will likely stand trial for "torturing" a terrorist, who had played a part in killing 3000 Americans, by pouring water up their nose.
20. Flew Air Force One over New York City causing panic at a cost of $400,000 to get a photo you can make with Photo Shop for less than a dollar.
21. Sent his National Defense Advisor to Europe to assure Europe that the US will no longer treat Israel in a special manner and they might be on their own with the Muslims
22.Began the process of nationalizing the Auto Industry and the Insurance industry.
23 Announced that for intent and purposes the Health Insurance Industry will be nationalized.
24 Sided with Hugo Chavez instead of the Rule of Law as Honduras legally deposed Zelaya and installed Roberto Micheletti as President. It must be noted that the army did so following a lawful order of the Honduras Supreme Court.
And just think only 1360 days to go, if we have anything left.

Good evening.
Housing continues to be a problem area for the economy.
In Blow to Housing, Risky Mortgage Losses Seen Rising
Standard & Poor's Monday boosted its expectations for losses on risky loans backing U.S. mortgage securities to as much as 40 percent, suggesting a darkened outlook for the troubled housing market.
The more dire assessment will likely "significantly impact" bonds originally carrying AAA ratings, S&P said in a report.
Increased assumptions for total losses on subprime and Alt-A residential mortgage-backed securities come amid declines in market value of the debt and a surge in the inventory of bank-owned properties, S&P said.

Cool. Yeah, Priest was part of the soundtrack to my life 20-25 years ago. Priest, Maiden, Metallica, Queensryche, Ozzy, Dio - all the metal gods of the time. We listened to Black Sabbath as easy-listening music :-)
Same here. I might throw in Tesla and the Crue. The peak of that whole era for me was Dio's first solo album Holy Diver. That just blew everything else away. Saw Dio at Pine Knob with Twisted Sister as warm up, and Dee Snyder actually came out on stage and said it was great to be in Chicago and then got booed for it mercilessly for about 3 songs till the band quit and walked off stage breaking shit. Ha.

Companies prepare for the worst:
Microsoft Plans for Worst as U.S. Companies Show No End to Fear
During the last week of May, treasurers representing America’s bluest chip companies gathered at the Park Hyatt hotel in Philadelphia for a conference dubbed “Survival Skills.”Instead of discussing ways to take advantage of the drop in borrowing costs to expand their businesses after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates to near zero, representatives of New York-based Colgate-Palmolive Co., International Business Machines Corp. in Armonk, New York, and dozens of other companies had other plans.
After watching credit dry up almost overnight as the subprime mortgage contagion spread in 2007 and 2008 and Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. collapsed in September, companies were more preoccupied with stockpiling cash and extending debt maturities by selling a record $301 billion of investment-grade bonds in the first half.
With all the change coming out of Washington, the environment is not exactly favorable to trying to grow your business.

I'm not surprised. There is a lot of stuff going on in the "street." Not good stuff, but none the less, stuff. A certain type of person gets to the point where they start feeling that nothing is going to stop, that they are helpless to change things and that's when the "slime" element can wiggle their way into a political and social situation.
I've said it a number of time here, look at the 1930's and see the reflection that is our times.

Bond yields are dropping due to fear;
Short-term Treasurys higher after buyback, ISM data
Treasury prices rose Monday, pushing 2-year note yields to their lowest level in about a month, as bond traders focused on renewed concerns about the trajectory for growth in the global economy. The Federal Reserve's purchase of $7 billion in debt also supported prices.
"If the bond market is going to break this week, it will break to lower yields," said Andrew Brenner, and co-head of structured products and emerging markets at MF Global. "The earnings numbers for the second quarter will not be good, and the fear of the economy will dominate over the supply concerns."
As I linked earlier today, some Democrats are starting to talk about having a 2nd stimulus bill.

10 killed in Chicago over the weekend.
Ten dead, at least 30 wounded in violent holiday weekend
Ten people were killed and at least 30 others were wounded in shootings and stabbings during a bloody holiday weekend, including four who died late Sunday into early Monday alone. The ten people killed included four who were slain in shootings and stabbings during an especially violent six-hour time span late Saturday into early Sunday
Yet nowhere in this or any other Chicago paper will you see a word of criticism by the media for Democrat Mayor Daley or the Democratically controlled local government. The wild days of the 1920's in Chicago had nothing on these days now.
This is a good example of what happens when the media becomes a willing arm of one political party.

With all the change coming out of Washington, the environment is not exactly favorable to trying to grow your business.
And that shows how clueless the administration is. The only way the Government can actually help create jobs is by getting out of the way of companies that employ people. They can simplify regulations and permits, improve infrastructures, reduce taxes on new equipment and facilities, anything at all to help businesses be more profitable.
Thats where the disconnect happens in the liberal mind. All their lives they've been taught to think that Corporations are greedy and evil and should be hounded and harassed in defense of the little people who slave away their lives for meager union scale wages. Slowly they are starting to realize that its not such a horrible thing if a company can actually make enough money to stay in business.

What I think is both frightening and depressing is that a lot of people seem to have absolutely no problem at all with the flawed idea of 'An enemy of my enemy is my friend.' It's happening with the anti-jihad movement looking the other way when it comes to Nazis. Now it's happening here with fiscal conservatives (both real and self-proclaimed) looking the other way when it comes not only to Nazis, but wackos and conspiracy kooks who less than a year ago would have rightly been the recipients of nothing but total scorn and rejection.
History shows this always comes back and bites people in the ass. Perhaps if this were a life and death struggle it might be acceptable, but it is not. We are fighting largely corrupt and deluded statists, not the aliens from ID4.

The media will cover this more when they can use it to back up Obama's assault on the 2nd Amendment.

It's happening with the anti-jihad movement looking the other way when it comes to Nazis. Now it's happening here with fiscal conservatives (both real and self-proclaimed) looking the other way when it comes not only to Nazis, but wackos and conspiracy kooks who less than a year ago would have rightly been the recipients of nothing but total scorn and rejection.
And they're not unrelated! The crypto-fascists are trying to mainstream, and they will use whatever populist device pops up for them. After 9/11- it was islam. Now in the wake of economic difficulties, it's tea parties.

I posted that a while back. Wonderful song. Did you know there are two versions of it? One is targeted towards the metal market and the other more contemporary radio stations. The lyrics are the same, as is the melody, but the style that it is played in is totally different.
I like 'em both.

Well, that LeMonde cartoon basically says (paraphase) "Jackson you died recently and the autopsy says you didn't have any drugs in you" and the top caption is "Finally a Clean Tour."
So, it's saying, finally a Tour De France that is drug free, and using Jackson death and autopsy as cartoon for that fact.

That was a pretty solid Crue tune. Started almost like something from Too Fast for Love which kind of fired me up for a minute but then kind of settled in more mainstream.

Hoosier, he can do it.
But I am not so sure that is really his goal.
He does seem dedicated to putting a spotlight on LIVEstrong.
That is his declared mission.
He may well work for his team as a serviette before the race is done.
But I also think, that given the smallest crack he will turn it on and win this thing.
I do believe that he is the most incredible athlete I have seen in my lifetime. And I am one quickly aging cat who has seen some pretty incredible atheletes in my time.
I used to think boxing was the ultimate sport - one on one.

Local residents also reported that internet and mobile phone connections in Urumqi were down.
Just so you know.. If you have Sprint/Nextel service there is a good chance your phone has a feature called direct talk on the main menu. When you select that mode your phone becomes a walkie talkie with a six-mile range and it doesn't need any stinking cell phone towers.

the Chinese ecomomy is a house of cards, worse in that respect than ours....the millions benefiting from their new prosperity at 10% growth is a drop in the bucket in terms of numbers...there are over a billion peasants over there...what if they cop a bad attitude?....China will be importing ammo to deal with them

Hey, Real, the good news is that he wants to discuss some blood test results. A response like "come in when you feel better" tells me there is nothing sinister in those results.

What, besides your natural inclination to edify communism, would lead you to believe that China will have a superior economy? I see a lot of very poor people bound to a system they cannot influence - not now, not ever. Explain please.
I did not say it was a superior economy or system, but at present growth rates it should be the worlds biggest in the 2020's. We'll still have a higher standard of living and the better system. I'm ignoring the snark about communism, the only reason China is growing, is they are starting to emulate our economic system, if not our freedoms.

It's a doctor show set in the Hamptons. The lead character took up practice there as a private doctor after being blackballed out of his hospital job owing to a patient death that was not really his fault.

It was no one's fault. The doctor made the right decisions trying to save two patients and one of them died anyways. But that patient was very rich and his family blackballed the doctor. He's been sued and they're in no hurry to go to trial. So he can't find work as an employee until and unless he wins the suit. The forgoing is just the trigger event. The lawsuit has no ongoing role in the show, beyond its barrier aspects.

And that is just as it may well play out. But today, Contador remained back in the pack (peloton) while Lance moved up into the front running group becoming the number one with his team at least temporarily.
When it comes down to nut cutting time, he who leads in the overall shall be supported by the rest of the team.
So, the internal competition becomes will it be
Contador or will it be
Armstrong for whom the team works?
Interestingly, I think Lance is OK with either role, but he is very smart, and very experienced and may well end up the guy
Contadaor will serve and not vice versa. I get the impression that if the roles are reversed that that would be OK with Lance too in this tour. I think he is running this race to promote his cancer program.

293 | Shiplord Kirel Mon, Jul 6, 2009 9:31:03pm |
Just got in from an extended excursion through Lubbock's orange cone jungles. The extent of road construction and repair here has reached a truly bizarre extreme, especially in the central part of town. Besides the gigantic and endless Marsha Sharp Porkway project, an east-west freeway across the middle of town, there are seemingly dozens of lesser projects blocking streets at literally ever turn. One main street, Quaker Avenue, was closed for 5 months last year, and the very same stretch has been closed again since April.
Many of these secondary outbreaks of the cone plague actually merge with the glacially slow work on the Porkway, making whole areas of town hard to access, not to mention hazardous.
This really needs to be investigated, it is strangling this community. Unlike many Lubbockites, I actually go to other cities frequently. It seems strange to be able to drive for several blocks without seeing a closed lane or an orange traffic cone, to actually cross a good size city on a main thoroughfare without having to squeeze into one lane or dodge a forest of barrels and cones. I also talk to visitors a lot. Their reaction on seeing traffic conditions in Lubbock is often "what the hell?" then after a few more miles of disrupted streets, "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THIS PLACE?"
The city administration and the yokel boosters blithely ignore this, declaring that it "will be great when it's finished" (though there are few indications it will ever be finished) and that it's "a sign of growth." If census figures are any guide, this is not a growing city. There was a huge outburst of construction a few years ago, during the cheap-labor/easy-credit bubble, but almost all of that was replacement construction. It may not be any coincidence that the greatest concentrations of un-sold houses and business boxes are in the parts of town that are not being strangled by the great road construction scam.
In the meantime, I have talked to parents who will not send their children to Texas Tech because of the dangerous, exasperating, and time and fuel wasting road conditions, and to business people who delay moving here for the same reason.

OMG!
Mind-boggling video of Arizona State Senator Sylvia Allen:
Phil Plait comments:
It’s not that she says the Earth is 6000 years old — twice, just to make sure — that floors me. It’s the casual way she said it, as if she said "I had a cup of coffee today." From her manner, it’s clear that not only does she believe this complete and utter nonsense, but this is a simple fact woven into her mind just like the Sun is bright or chocolate is tasty.
To her, the Earth being 6000 years old just is.
Now, to be fair, this video is without context, and so we can’t be absolutely sure she’s a creationist. But it sure as heck sounds that way, and given her voting record it fits right in.
I think Phil is too generous here. Who else but a creationist would think the Earth is 6000 old?

Glad to hear you've got a little programming action.
Maybe it's just that I'm a night owl, but late night and programming seem to go together for me two. I'm not a S/W engineer; just do some analysis kind of work as part of my job. Sometimes it seems downright therapeutic.
I love programming over night. This is really a simple problem. I sent them a group of files with new software changes to lay into their production folder. They say it's not doing anything new. I say they didn't unzip my files and put them into production, because it they did only two things could happen, it would BLOW UP or WORK.
I told them this just a little while ago and gave them a list of things to look for in production.
They are done with me for now, I will know more between 8 and 10 in the morning.
So, I get premium money because they didn't do what I asked them to do.
I bet I win.

OK, I'll certainly grant you that it might - MIGHT - be a glimpse into the window of the thinking of the young Obama.
But I also have to say - having been around in those days and having attended the NO NUKES Concert - that I didn't find anything (and I did read it all the way through even after I saw how old it was) new or enlightening - just a lot of the same old, same old from college kids in those days. And it was - perhaps understandably, driven by the Selective Service - nobody wanted to get drafted into another Vietnam. But his line "Not so the Greens. If a group of young, anti-establishment pacifistsv, ith unusual ideas and uncomfortable answers to hard questions terrifies us more today than Hitler, Himmler,
Goering and Goebbels did back in 1933,
our terror says more about us than it
does about the Greens or the Germans."
He completely lost me. Both intellectually and emotionally. I don't ever remembering being terrified of the Greens or their ideas; I do distinctly remember being terrified of the Germans and their ideas, even though they were 33 years or so old at the time that was written. It was an essay written by a young, immature college student and reads like it.
I will say that Obama has learned a lot since then. And his only concern with the Envrionmentalsists (the "Greens" of today) is that they vote for him.
