On July 2, the U.S. military said an American soldier had disappeared after walking off his base in eastern Afghanistan with three Afghan counterparts and was believed to have been taken prisoner.
I don't want to speculate until we know more. There are so many possibilities - from leaving on his own as you pointed out, to having forged a relationship with his counterparts and letting his guard down, to being forcibly removed by the counter parts. We just don't know - and may not ever really know.

Ok, there are a bunch of nested links in here that I haven't read yet but Tim Blair is reporting on another nuisance law suit against Sarah Palin.
The Anchorage Daily News liked the story so much they posted it not once, not twice, but three times - including an entry on the Alaska Politics Blog by Bill White.
In all of those stories, the version of events offered by the plaintiff in the suit, Gregory Charles Royal, was offered uncritically and without any background on Royal. He’s only identified as “a Washington, D.C., musician”. Nowhere do [Associated Press reporter] Rachel D’Oro or Bill White answer some rather critical questions that their readers might have, such as “Who is this Royal guy?” and “What are his motivations?”
So Lindell does the legwork himself, turning up a number of interesting points, including this:
Royal first appeared in the public eye in relation to Palin through the graces of Toronto-based blogger Charley James.
Charley James! The fake-named bogus blogger whose Palin-hating fantasies ended up on front pages in Australia! Nice to see that his mainstream influence hasn’t diminished.
Off to read the links.........

Oh, christ - look what this guy was saying about Palin
Royal admits he was hitting on her and, he claims, she knew it. Picking up women is a regular activity for most musicians, especially when on the road.
[...]
Royal felt he was making progress with Sarah Heath and when a couple of his musician friends approached, he waved them off. “But she saw them and got weird.”
“Sarah asked me if they were with me. I asked her what was up because she was obviously a little weird after seeing them,” states Royal, who has Native American blood in his ancestry is a fairly light skinned while his buddies were much darker.
“I don’t mean any harm,” Royal says Sarah told him, which is exactly what she meant but he recalls her saying that she doesn’t do black guys.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Aren't we all glad that when President Obama can't get out and apologize for something, he can send Hillary along to do it for him? She is in India busy apologizing for our carbon emissions, even though it was our industrial base and technological might that helped the US defeat Nazism and Communism and end the cold war. It also gave the US the high standard of living that many of us take for granted, and which most of the rest of the world wishes they had.
Instead, Clinton and Obama are apologizing for this, all while hoping that the Chinese and Indians both cut their carbon emissions, even though both have lower per capita rates than the US. It is their overall emissions that are higher as a result of the size of their population, and their emissions continue growing as their standard of living increases.
This is all about controlling the standard of living of people, not anything remotely related to sound science.

re: #26 talon_262
Speaking of Teddy Boy, Jeff Jacoby, the only writer for the Boston Globe, had quite a smack down of Ted today:
Chappaquiddick's unanswered questions
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO TOMORROW, on July 22, 1969, Mary Jo Kopechne was buried at St. Vincent's Cemetery in Plymouth, Penn. She had died three days earlier, pinned underwater when Sen. Kennedy's car swerved off Dike Bridge on Chappaquiddick Island.
Within hours of Kopechne's death, a Kennedy aide named Dun Gifford flew a chartered plane into Edgartown (the Martha's Vineyard town of which Chappaquiddick is a part), with orders to get the body off the island. Before Massachusetts officials had even decided whether to perform an autopsy to settle the cause of death, Kopechne's remains were in Pennsylvania -- beyond the state's jurisdiction.
-- Did Kennedy order Gifford to remove the body?
That's one question the senator has never answered.
In fact, quite a few questions have never been answered.
At least, not by Kennedy.
At least, not truthfully.
Kennedy and Kopechne were part of a group of 12 that had come to Chappaquiddick for the Edgartown Regatta and a private barbecue afterward. Half the guests were married men, half were single women in their 20s. Kennedy and Kopechne left the party at some point that evening and ended up driving off the bridge.
Though Kennedy managed to extricate himself from the car and get back to his motel that night, Kopechne remained in the car until her body was recovered by a Fire Department diver at 8:45 the next morning. To the diver, Capt. John Farrar, it was clear that she had neither drowned nor died quickly. Kopechne survived for some time by breathing a pocket of trapped air, finally suffocating to death when the oxygen ran out. When Kennedy reported the accident to the Edgartown police, it was 9:45 a.m. -- some nine or 10 hours after he left Kopechne in his car.Questions:
-- Why did Kennedy and Kopechne leave the barbecue?
Kennedy said they wanted to return to their respective motels and left to catch the ferry (which only operated until midnight) back to Edgartown center. But Kennedy's chauffeur, who was on hand, didn't drive them; Kopechne didn't take her purse or her room key; and they didn't go to the ferry. Kennedy headed in the opposite direction -- to Dike Bridge and the secluded beach beyond.-- What time did they leave?Kennedy claimed he left at 11:15 p.m., and the accident happened a few minutes later. Yet Deputy Sheriff Huck Look reported seeing Kennedy's black Oldsmobile at 12:45 a.m., heading down Dike Road toward the bridge. After the accident, the senator said he hadn't been able to rescue Kopechne because of the "strong and murky current" in which he kept getting "swept away." In truth there was no current at 11:15. The water was absolutely slack, at low tide. At 12:45, however, the current was fast-moving and strong.
Please read it all!

My son is a manager at guitar center, and his only advice is to spend as much as you can afford. He said the difference between say a $150 budget guitar and a $300 one is pretty massive. Of course, this comes from a kid with PRS guitars.

I'm baking a ham and will have that along with potato salad and sauteed tomatoes with basil for dinner. Gotta' go dice my eggs.
I am soooo hungry! I would add some mozzarella to the tomatoes! Sauteed Caprese Salad a la Mandy Manners. New dish.

Worldwide, second warmest June on record:

Indeed.
Conclusion? Nate Silver shows that Hindrocket will lie even about the weather.

Not true.
Soros and Gore have little remote controls they carry with them at all times, which override the NOAA sensors. I have this on good authority.

Charles, any thoughts regarding reports that some people, having purchased books on Kindle have suddenly found them deleted?
As I understand it, they did receive a refund, but still, its creepy.

Climate change skeptic Steve McIntyre cautions:
...In my opinion, as I've observed many times, the pure time series properties of the various temperature series do not permit elaborate conclusions one way or the other on the future course of temperatures - either on the part of Rahmstorf and similar data torturers or on the part of people deriving a morale from relatively little temperature increase over the past decade.

In practical terms, the worst outcome would be for the climate to whipsaw us: "trend" long enough for the warmers or coolers to claim "victory", and then decisively reverse.

Climate change skeptic Steve McIntyre cautions:
jvic: Ummmm. Could you, or anybody, suggest a translation of McIntyre's comment? It's way over my head. I'm especially intrigued by people who "derive their morale" from temperature readings. :)

Ed, I wouldn't presume to translate but will try an interpretation.
...the pure time series properties of the various temperature series do not permit elaborate conclusions one way or the other on the future course of temperatures - either on the part of Rahmstorf and similar data torturers or on the part of people deriving a morale from relatively little temperature increase over the past decade.
1. "pure time series properties of the various temperature series": I think he means taking the day-by-day or month-by-month temperature histories at face value. Ignore whether mistakes were made in obtaining those values from e.g. satellite telemetry or thermometers located near air conditioners or the like.
To oversimplify, suppose you were testing whether a coin is fair by repeatedly flipping it. The closer the coin is to being fair, the more times you'd have to flip it to draw a reasonably confident conclusion. McIntyre is saying that the coin has not been flipped temperature has not been measured enough times to support prediction of how future flips will behave future temperatures.
2. Apparently Rahmstorf is predicting a catastrophic warming-induced rise in sea levels. McIntyre says that R's prediction is illegitimate if based on no other evidence than the temperature record.
3. "...deriving a morale from relatively little temperature increase over the past decade..." Just because we haven't seen the big warming that some people predicted 10 years ago, we shouldn't rule out serious future (A)GW.
"deriving a morale" could be a typo for "deriving a moral" or it could be a deliberate play on words: some people watch the weather and cheer every time it matches their expectations for longer-term climate.
********************
I hope the above is plausible and helpful. Keep in mind I'm not knowledgeable, let alone expert. When I looked into this stuff a little bit, I was surprised how much more complex and subtle it was than my preconceptions.

jvic: Very helpful, yes. I get in over my head pretty quickly.
Case in point: I thought Rahmstorf was an Air Force base. :)
