I'm concerned when we start labeling this as "armed to the teeth" it is creating a mindset to make it ok to remove these types of weapons from conservatives who answer they may have, on occasion, listened to Glen Beck. I even sat through the Glenn Beck videos she posted and read her ramblings. The lady is just insane and potentially pretty dangerous. Luckily these loons aren't coordinating with each other to launch attacks. It would only take 3-4 loons to start working together and something really bad could happen.
Even one loon, acting alone, can cause some serious tragedy. We have plenty of Sudden Jihad stories to prove that.

Well I just screwed around with the dKos nirther poll numbers and a spreadsheet and came up with a distribution of responses if we assume that party affiliations conform to what the Washington Post posted here, and the US Census figures by region summarized here for the most recent common year between the two datasets (2006).
The response distribution to a hypothetical 1500 person sample is:
Was Obama born in the U S of A?
Yes No Unk
DN 146.31 6.29 4.72
DS 133.23 5.73 4.30
DM 126.06 5.42 4.07
DW 127.14 5.47 4.10
RN 38.75 25.83 27.68
RS 71.05 47.37 50.75
RM 58.47 38.98 41.76
RW 53.28 35.52 38.06
IN 87.38 8.42 9.47
IS 80.40 7.75 8.72
IM 76.02 7.33 8.24
IW 87.92 8.47 9.53
Where D is Democrat, R is Republican, I is Independent, N is Northeast, S is South, M is Midwest, and W is West.
This "datafit" takes into account party affiliations and population distributions. It assumes that the response rates among a particular party don't vary among regions.
Data crunchers should take a look and check my work. I haven't pored over the results yet - just posting them as I got them.

Yeah, that's another fascinating thing about the internet. As far as I can tell, the life of an unmedicated or undermedicated paranoid schizophrenic used to be a very solitary one, and they'd sometimes accumulate great stashes of books and newspaper clippings which they thought confirmed their suspicions of great evil conspiracies. Even though they had nobody to share them with.
Now that there are people like Alex Jones who aggregate paranoid delusions and post them on web sites, I suspect that schizophrenics don't need to spend nearly as much time tracking down "leads." And I wonder if their lives have somehow become more social, with the advent of online forums where there are lots of others who share their feelings.

‘Cash for Clunkers’ Becomes a Republican Target
In this case, however, year-over-year sales gains are illusory; at this time last year, auto sales were already firmly in the tank. We can look forward to similar "gains" over the next two or three quarters as comparisons with previous figures make results that are firmly awful to mediocre look "better."
I'm glad to see Ford doing well; of the Big Three, they were the only company that had their shit together, and they are continuing to benefit from solid leadership. Unlike Chrysler, which has been forced to "twofer" their own sales, adding an additional $4500 discount on top of the government's in order to attract buyers. The article notes that overall car sales will come in around 16% lower even than last year's dismal showings; apparently, government control of the auto companies is failing in comparison with well-managed private enterprise, although even there the return to profitability and growth is still in the future.

It is really scary. And he has something like the second-highest ratings of any TV host, right?
However, now and then I think it's worthwhile to remember what was happening during the Bush administration. In my blue-state neck of the woods, it was very commonplace for educated, highly functioning people to go around publicly saying things like "the Patriot act literally takes away every one of your constitutional rights. Bush is literally a fascist dictator. He is every bit as bad as the Nazis. He should not only be impeached, but executed."
Alex Jones' people are much scarier to me, but they're only a few points less rational.

It's a good question. CFC has certainly drained the used car market of cheap vehicles, and the poor will be the ones bearing the brunt of this effect for the reasons you cite.
The program also only entices those in the market for new cars in the first place, or those who would have been in the near future. There will be a corresponding slump in demand once the program expires, possibly driving a fragile auto sector recovery back into the tank. Congress, in it's abysmal wisdom, may decide to keep extending the program indefinitely, which will effectively wind up adding $4500 to the price of every car sold if allowed to continue, just as rebates demanded by consumers essentially added the rebate cost to the price of a new car.

The CARS program is about stimulating sales for the auto industry. Mileage ratings are a sidelight.
IMHO, the facts that (1) the trade-ins are being destroyed and (2) there's a less-than-25-year-old cap are the tip-offs.
Detroit gets more sales if the number of cars on the road is reduced.
The over-25-year crop of autos are the ones which are the real polluters.

tax the people to reward the UAW? please, the consequences were never unintended.
Here's the kicker though...I think the CARS program is actually going to mostly benefit the "foreign" marques (Nissan, Toyota, etc.) that are not beholden to the UAW, simply because they have more eligible models to choose from, from the top to the bottom of the spectrum.

re: #157 karmic_inquisitor
Computing the regional distributon of party membership that this model yields, we get:
Democrats:
Northeast 27%
South 25%
Midwest 24%
West 24%
Republicans:
Northeast 17%
South 32%
Midwest 26%
West 24%
Independents:
Northeast 26%
South 24%
Midwest 23%
West 27%
Just as a heads up - the South has 2 times the population that the Northeast have. Together they make up roughly 50% of the population and the West and Midwest split (more or less) the other half.

Cars for Clunkers - what a freaking joke.
U.S. carmakers are struggling (along with the rest of the economy) so the government hands them tons of cash. When that does little to help, the car makers they then come up with a program to get "clunkers" (which implies old polluters) off the road by giving up to $4500 for a trade in.
Consumers aren't stupid and see a way to take advantage of a government program (think free cheese) so they line up in droves. Obama touts this as "success!".
Yep. It's success alright. We succeeded in throwing $4 Billion dollars away on a short term fix for the Automotive industry.

re: #184 SixDegrees
There are millions of used cars that will not be traded in for CFC, especially cheap economical cars that did not qualify because they aren't gas guzzlers. Check ebay, the cheap used car market is alive and well.

It may make people feel good, but how useful can DNA data be without a medical history of the donor, as well as follow-up data to see whether the person develops any of the diseases he's supposedly at risk for? Looking at these numbers, I think the dKos model undercounts the number of Democrats in the South and overcounts the Republicans. That is my suspicion.
The hypothesis that Republicans in the South are freaking crazier than all others is watered down by the fact that the South has 2X the number of people than the Northeast.
The party membership distribution that comes out of the model is surprising in that it has more Democrats in the Northeast than in the South even though the South is 2X larger. If the South is 35% Democrat and 41% Republican based on the Washington Post data, and if the Northeast is 44% Democrat, the the dKos model is way off - it has far fewer Dems in the South than it should because the South should still hold more Democrats in aggregate than the Northeast based on the Census/Wapo data.
By under counting Dems and (thereby over counting Republicans) in the South, the poll can be used as a blunt object with which to reinforce biases about Southerners and Evangelicals. If over representation were filtered out, you'd have a less alarming poll and less with which to accuse Southerners of being bigoted.
So I am pretty sure the numbers have been goosed but welcome others to take a fresh look and disprove my suspicion.

The market for old cars that get less than 18 MPG is pretty limited, used car lots typically will not even mess with cars under 5K, at least in Maryland. Ebay is a prime source for the really cheap cars, that have no book value. i.e. when I wanted a 500 Cu in Caddy engine for a swap in a Studebaker, I bought a $800 Caddy, drove it home and pulled the drive line and scrapped the rest..

Thanks for proving my point. Thats EXACTLY the type of car/ deal poorer people look for, and it's also EXACTLY the type of car that is getting crushed
How many cars like that do you want, they are still out there and cheap. It's silly to think 200,000 cars off the roads will effect the used car market when we've been selling 10-15 million cars a year. Most cars from the 90's are still on the road, so we have a few 100 million left after CARS crushes the 200,000 gas guzzlers.
It will effect used car dealers however, since many will buy a new car with a rebate over a late model trade.

"The United States is home to the largest passenger vehicle market of any country in the world.[1]. Overall, there were an estimated 250,851,833 registered passenger vehicles in the United States according to a 2006 DOT study.[2] This number, along with the average age of vehicles, has increased steadily since 1960, indicating a growing number of vehicles per capita. "
Assume even 250,000 crushed, and see what percentage that is of over 250,000,000. Hint, it's one tenth of one percent. IMHO, .1% won't kill the used car market.

We have given the GM and Chrysler how many billions already? Most of it down the drain. The legitimate investors and bond holders are told to go to hell and the government takes over along with the UAW. We (the people) should have told GM and Chrysler to seek bankruptcy protection last year or at the start of this year.
I am all in favor of a robust domestic auto industry, but it sure seems the politicians, the unions and some of the workers are still stuck in a fantasy world where losing billions is no big deal. The sooner they ween themselves off the government teet and start running like a real company the better. If they cannot make without the government propping them up, then they should go out of business.

One thing that gets missed in "Cars for Clunkers"
There is an environmental cost to actually building a car. Quite a bit of energy gets consumed melting steel and synthesizing the plastics and whatnot, not to mention the pollutants as certain chemicals are used to give some things shiny finishes and other things matte finishes.
Those costs aren't incurred when an existing car passes from one owner to another. That I why i wonder how so many have bought into "Cars for Clunkers" somehow being "green".
The turned in car gets destroyed.
I thought Greens were big on "reuse". Maybe those values are more fungible when a "D" signs off on legislation.

Nope. I think a lot of the problem comes from people whose knowledge of the South derives mainly from "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "Deliverance." It's changed dramatically as Yankees have moved down here. That's good in some ways and not so good in others. As the bumper sticker says, "I don't care how you did it up North."

OH MY F*CKING WORD
On the one hand, you're saying that 200,000 cars will NOT make a dent in available used cars
In the next breath you're telling us that 200,000 new cars (out of 10-15 million sold per yera ) will KICK START the new car industry!
It already has, read the news, dealers are selling out of inventory, some sold more cars in a day then they had in a month. I agree that if it only adds say 200,000 or less sales in the end that's a drop in the bucket. We'll see when the July sales figures are released, but Ford had the first sales increase in a few years.

OK - what have I missed on this list?
Obama accomplishments:
Offended the Queen of England.
Bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia.
Praised the Marxist Daniel Ortega.
Kissed Hugo Chavez on the cheek.
Endorsed the Socialist Evo Morales of Bolivia .
Announced we would meet with Iranians with no pre-conditions.
Gave away billions to AIG also without pre-conditions.
Expanded the bailouts.
Insulted everyone who has ever loved a Special Olympian.
Insulted Gordon Brown by giving him a cheap set of DVDs he could not use in his player.
Doubled our national debt.
Announced a termination of the space defense system the day after the North Koreans launched an ICBM.
Despite the urgings of his own CIA director and the prior 4 CIA directors, released information on intelligence gathering.
Accepted without public comment the fact that five of his cabinet members cheated on their taxes and two others withdrew after they couldn't take the heat.
Told Mexicans the violence in their country was because of us.
Politicized the census by moving it into the White House from its Department of Commerce origins..
Salutes as heroes three Navy SEALS who took down three terrorists who threatened one American life and the next day announces members of the Bush administration will likely stand trial for "torturing" a terrorist, who had played a part in killing 3000 Americans, by pouring water up their nose.
Flew Air Force One over New York City causing panic at a cost of $400,000 to get a photo you can make with Photo Shop for less than a dollar.
Sent his National Defense Advisor to Europe to assure Europe that the US will no longer treat Israel in a special manner and they might be on their own with the Muslims
Began the process of nationalizing the Auto Industry and the Insurance industry.
Announced that for intent and purposes the Health Insurance Industry will be nationalized.
Sided with Hugo Chavez instead of the Rule of Law as Honduras legally deposed Zelaya and installed Roberto Micheletti as President. It must be noted that the army did so following a lawful order of the Honduras Supreme Court.
Called an entire police department "stupid" before bothering to gather the facts.
And finally...

Funny you mentioned the 12's, my friend just got his bone stock Studebaker in the 12's on street tires. Here's the poop.
"Muncie Dragway had a special 2-day meet this weekend. Ted Harbit participated with The Stude Tomato, his original-engine 1963 R2/4-speed Lark Custom 2-door. He said traction was unusually good. He was thrilled with the excellent 60' and quarter-mile times he was able to post, and terminal speeds he was able to achieve
Check out the following runs today. Remember, this is running in Pure Stock configuration: street tires and closed exhaust through mufflers and tail pipes! This is consistent performance, not a single-run fluke among slower runs. (Expressed, in order, are 60' times, 1/4-mile elapsed times, and 1/4-mile terminal speeds.)
Run #1: 1.950, 12.809 seconds, 108.39 MPH
Run #2: 1.984, 12.811 seconds, 109.03 MPH
Run #3: 1.913, 12.628 seconds, 109.94 MPH
Run #4: 1.919, 12.938 seconds, 099.06 MPH (backed off on this run to avoid beaking out...but still posted an ET under 13 seconds!) "
