What Right Wing Racism?

Weird • Views: 2,728

After bloggers began pointing them out, Minnesota Republican State Senate candidate Mike Parry deleted more than 40 racist and anti-gay comments from his Twitter feed: Senate candidate scrubs racist comments from Twitter.

Among the tweets erased by Parry was a May 27 comment about President Obama:

“read the exclusive on Mr O in Newsweek. He is a Power Hungry Arrogant Black Man.”

Another tweet read, “What’s with the Dems and Pedophiles?”

And another erroneously interpreted voting laws: “Only those serving overseas can vote absentee!”

At the Republican endorsement convention in Faribault, Parry said he wants “a senator that is not worried about being politically correct. Welfare is meant to be a safety net, not a hammock.”

More details here: It takes a worried man: SD 26 GOP Endorsee Mike Parry scrubs potentially offensive twitter posts - Bluestem Prairie.

I was just watching the New Years Bloggingheads edition and the supposed “trend of the decade” for the last 10 years was the increase in transparency that is happening to all people, especially those in the public.

The “electronic footprint” an individual now has is becoming important to that person’s life, in all spheres.

5 webevintage  Fri, Jan 1, 2010 1:18:24pm

Why, oh why do pols think that you can just say anything on facebook and twitter and not have anyone notice?
Or that if you delete things that they actually go away?

(even though it is teh awesome that the inter-tubes have helped show how mean and nasty some of these folks actually are)

It’s probably something in the water of some of the lakes. Ugh, I just realized how close that sounds to the plot of some fifth-rate SyeFye Channel movie.

Well, at least he took them down. In an earlier thread, the criticism was made that such comments are all too frequently left untouched, so I guess this is an improvement over that sort of neglect, if nothing else.

Better would have been had they not appeared in the first place. Which shouldn’t even have to be mentioned, but such mention is apparently necessary for some readers.

He took them down after he got caught.

And because he’s running for office.

There’s really not much to praise about the fact that he deleted his comments, when it’s pretty clear his motivation was not because he understood they were wrong, but because he wanted to hide them.

Exactly.

This isn’t someone feeling contrite for posting something he shouldn’t have and deleting his comments due to a sincere change of heart. It’s someone trying to cover his own ass and salvage his campaign after he revealed himself to be a bigot. That’s hardly praiseworthy.

Of course, with the snow we get around here, it would only be a matter of time before one of them went into cardiac vapor lock on the job, and the state had a wrongful death claim on it’s hands.

There are three possibilities. I’ve already voted for the one I would have liked to see: such comments not appearing in the first place. Of the remaining two: the comments were made, but were subsequently removed, or were left up, I think the latter would be even worse than removing them, though.

I’m trying to overcome my normal curmudgeonly nature and look for the positive side of things. Today, anyway. It may not be a sustainable effort.

These tweets came from Mike Parry — they were posted with his account. The only way they would come from someone else is if Parry had let someone else use his Twitter account, which is highly unlikely.

Not to hijack this topic, but during the Iranian protests there was a lot of talk about twitter “feeds” that I took to be sort of like open accounts anyone could post to, but provided a single account for subscribers to sign on to for reading. People tweeting about a particular topic will use tags - for instance, the most recent Iran tags worth watching were #ashura and/or #iranelection.

Anyhow - you can get onto something like tweetdeck or tweetgrid, and enter those tags so that you get ONLY tweets on that topic.

Hoft thinks the American media are deliberately ignoring the story, to cover for President Obama. Just saying.

And here I thought getting the obligatory deflection post in at #3 would mean that it would be at least 100 comments before someone tried to turn the topic into “Hey, look over there at what some lefties are doing! Can we? Please?”

Just sayin.

You can search topics on twitter without having an account.
[Link: twitter.com…]

You can keep an eye on whatever hashtag you’re interested in that way.

BTW, anyone watching the spread of racism on the right should keep an eye on the #tcot tag. It stands for Top Conservatives on Twitter, and the amount of racist garbage pouring through it is something to behold. (anyone at all can use the tcot tag, but these aren’t lefties infiltrating the list).

How does one distinguish between a leftie infiltrator and a rightie true believer? Is there a tag for that or something?

I sort of remember, during the first round of Iranian protests last year, that government forces turned to posting false tweets when they were unable to shut down the cell networks. Is there some mechanism that allowed protesters to detect these as bogus?

True. We were talking about that on Wednesday. The main difference between the responsible sites and the irresponsible sites is that the responsible ones delete comments like that and ban people who post them repeatedly. Some sites decline to do that because they want to maximize their traffic and banning crazies causes them to go elsewhere to get their freak on. Shortsighted, but true.

No mechanism that I know of - but the protestors were very quickly able to figure out which twitter accounts were gov’t accounts, and they sent out warnings not to trust things sent out by this or that account.

You can take a look at the person’s actual twitter account and see what else they are tweeting, who they are following and who is following them.
It’s possible for someone to set up a dummy account and use it solely for impersonation purposes, but it would require a lot of work and effort (you’d have to ‘stay in character’ and use it several times a day)— it’s not like the old trolling strategy of leaving a single blog comment (or even several).

Depends on what your goals are, I guess. If all you want to do is churn a lot of page refreshes, encouraging or just allowing the most rabid OCD kooks to run rampant will get you there in a hurry, and might even marginally boost your ad revenues.

Ultimately, though, even the most braindead ad placement software is going to notice that all of your 5000 hits per day are coming from 5 IP addresses, though.

re: #87 reine.de.tout

No mechanism that I know of - but the protestors were very quickly able to figure out which twitter accounts were gov’t accounts, and they sent out warnings not to trust things sent out by this or that account.

The way they did it was by examining the rest of the social network that the twitter account was linked to, as I explained above. If you’re part of the network, it’s progressively more difficult for people to fool you (or those also connected to you).

The analogy would be with setting up a really convincing fake Facebook account. You’d check into all the people they’re connected with if you thought something was fishy. Eventually you’d be able to tell, but only because of where you yourself are in the social network.

A real-world analogy would be meeting someone who pretends to work in your industry. They might have enough superficial knowledge to ‘pass’ in casual conversation, but given enough time you’d be able to know something was up.

[Link: gatewaypundit.firstthings.com…]

Hoft thinks the American media are deliberately ignoring the story, to cover for President Obama. It apparently doesn’t even enter his consciousness that the reason US media are ignoring him is because his source for everything he’s been posting is a vicious anti-gay hate group, Mass Resistance, with absolutely no credibility.

So instead he praises the “courageous” Bulgarian media.

Some sites are lazy and don’t moderate for that reason. And some are actively encouraging and fostering what’s happening in their comments— Malkin and Breitbart, for example.

That’s teh real reason they never retract their errors. They know their audience isn’t actually interested in facts or reality. They want the red meat of raw emotions (hateful and prejudicial emotions, mostly). And breitbart and malkin are delighted to provide it.

That’s a fair story, as well. Except that:

1. None of these people gave a damn when the Bush administration was appointing czars.

2. The ‘czars’ thing was blown up into a giant, hysterical talking point, and people were led to believe that the post was unique to the Obama administration.

Yeah, I knew that was coming. That’s why I said the story was not so much the czars, it’s the way this administration has used them. …mainly to get buddies into government offices who would never pass a confirmation of any kind, and in many cases, not even a security check.

And if someone can demonstrate sensibly that this is either a specific problem to the Obama administration, or an ongoing multi-administration problem that should be addressed, I would be interested in reading their work.

Malkin has demonstrated to my satisfaction during this last year that she’s not interested in truth, good government, or anything except partisan sniping and twisting. She doesn’t give a damn, she just hates Obama.

No, reine, you are the one not only trying, but actually saying, that you found it in poor taste.

Oddly, not when it was posted. Most likely for the same reason the lone downdinger waited and snuck back to downding it later— because downdinging it at the time, or criticising it as in poor taste at the time, would have seemed petty, vindictive, and begrudging of other people’s happiness.

That’s what I find to be in poor taste. YMMV.

But not in good taste.

There’s a world of difference between something that is perhaps a little ‘risque’ and something that is in poor taste.

I know. I don’t use it in the regular way, I guess… I do protect my tweets, ( since there are hardly ever any, no biggie), and I don’t use it so much to tweet as to read/scan sites quickly that I otherwise would not have time to keep up with. I just do not get the ’ what are you doing? ’ feature… do I care that Joe Blow had pasta with clam sauce for dinner? Even a famous Joe Blow? Er, nope.

That’s probably why I never thought it would be useful in any way. All these people using it to update us on what they’re having for dinner or what their dog just did. I loathed it when it came out and thought it was completely worthless.
I still think it’s pretty worthless unless you’re a blogger, in the media, politics or following a specific industry topic. These are more like professional uses of it, I guess, rather than personal.

Well, the first czars were appointed in the 1st Bush’s term with drug and education czars (both titles held be the same guy at different time, cause, you know, he did such a great job.) But they proliferated over the next 4 presidential terms. The problem as I see it, and saw it then, is that once someone introduces such a concept, it gains a life of its own. There will be more. You can’t turn back the clock. More’s the pity.

2009 - A Race Odyssey

This is a cross post by Edmund Standing

For much of 2009, we have been honoured to have regular contributions in the Harry’s Place comments section from BNP Legal Director comedian Lee John Barnes. So, for all his numerous fans, I bring you the best of Lee Barnes, 2009:

January:

LJB brings us his first poetic masterpiece of the year, in which he writes of ‘the resistance’ and their struggle against the ‘Zionist entity’. An anonymous commenter, sadly lacking the depth of understanding necessary to appreciate the genius of LJB, states: ‘I’m surprsied [sic] and saddened to read this poem Lee’. For shame!

LJB confirms that he does indeed visit the neo-Nazi Stormfront forum.

‘NASA shits bricks over Gary McKinnon Case’, writes LJB, returning to a favourite topic of his: the truth about the UFO cover-up!

February:

LJB explains the significance of the Wicker Man and how ‘its image is firmly rooted in the collective unconscious of our folk’:

The lulz at the expense of BNP buffoon John Lee Barnes continues…

The Iranian protestors seemed to find good use for it. Everything else just seems pointless. Then again, I can barely stand Facebook, which I am now on. I joined because it was the only way to stay in touch with a number of friends, but it really does not interest me.

166 SixDegrees  Fri, Jan 1, 2010 2:48:23pm

So, the wife bought me the Les Halles Cookbook by Anthony Bourdain for Christmas, and I am enjoying the hell out of it. I doubt that I’ll ever make many of the recipes - they’re developed from the perspective of a professional chef, someone who spends three days making a veal demi-glace for use as a sauce, but they’re enjoyable reading sheerly for their value as food porn. My favorite so far is Tournedos Rossini, which consists of filet mignon, sauteed in butter and served with a thick slice of foie gras, also sauteed in butter, with the aforementioned veal demi-glace and Madeira mixed, reduced by half with truffles and poured over all.

I need a bypass just thinking about it.

That Steve Benen article I linked over at American prospect about the Bush czars does a good job IMO of pointing out potential issues with the czar system. But no one on the right wants to talk about the real potential problems, because they all involve waiting— waiting to see if adding this extra administrative layer turns out to increase efficiency or decrease it.

But that’s something that requires waiting and then genuine reasoned analysis, and gets in the way of the ‘just add water’ BLARG OBAMA HATE OBAMA MY GAWD ITS FULL OF CZARS instant freakout recipe.

Very hard to say, really. Peppers are extremely variable, both in appearance and heat. As a rough rule, small == hot. Could also be a Thai pepper, maybe.

Um, the real story is that the proliferation of czars began under Bush, not this administration.

I don’t now whether there is any value at this point to mentioning that the idea of “czars” (presidential aides with primary responsibility for a particular policy area) goes back much further than even the GW Bush administration. I particularly remember the “energy czars” of the ’70s, though, as you point out, the idea really took off in the ’00s.

I wonder whether the issue would have been much less useful for demagoguery had the term “czar,” with its Russian (albeit not Soviet) connotations, not been the word involved.

Absolutely, excellent points. I’ve gotten burned out on the czar issue after posting the history of it several times over the summer— now I just cut to the chase, relink that Benen article and point out that under Bush we saw a massive expansion of czars— 1 or 2 more than Obama has IIRC — including a ‘domestic policy czar’ a Katrina czar, and a birdflu czar. None of the usual wingnut suspects (Malkin, Rush) complained then, naturally.

And I bet you’re correct about the term being useful to the demogogues because of its vague Russian connotations. It isn’t coincidental that most of the people promoting the czar mythology insist that all these people aren’t subject to confirmation, when a quick review of the facts would show them otherwise. The facts would get in their way of insisting that Holdren the science czar wants to sterilize us through the drinking water, etc.
