I was gonna make it an early night. Finished my day about 10, little snack and bed. Did one last check on the computer and saw the thread about the guy with the grenade launcher. Could barely eat, didn't make it to bed until 11:30.

Ow. That's gonna hurt in the morning.
On the plus side, it provides the Dems with a handy excuse for jettisoning the current health care bill - they simply can't afford it. Look for them to blame the GOP for the deficit (I know, it's BS, but this is politics) and put forward a much smaller, more bi-partisan-friendly bill with limited scope, like insurance reform.
Meanwhile: rock, meet hard place. Consensus seems to be growing that Brown's victory was a backlash against Democrat incompetence, including massive overspending, so increasing the debt limit by such a dramatic amount is not going to be popular. But doing nothing, and going into default, would be much worse, and would plunge the world economy into chaos.
Should be an interesting couple of weeks.

Don't know who you are including in "the left", but Brown certainly has said several things to make certain people uncomfortable. For instance, his comment about marriage.

Odd, however, that no one has addressed that, or anything else said during the campaign.

I tend to agree. Brown comes nowhere even close to being my ideal candidate for anything. But often, voters are presented with a choice between two lousy candidates, and the decision isn't so much who they should vote for as who they should vote against. If I were a Massacussetts voter, Brown would definitely have been the lesser of the two not altogether pleasant choices.

Kwame Kilpatrick lost his job as Detroit's mayor and his freedom, in part, for telling lies.
A judge on Wednesday called Kilpatrick deceitful and self-serving while ordering him to come up with more than $300,000 for restitution to the city within 90 days or possibly face a return to jail.
"We are here because you committed perjury," Wayne County Circuit Court Judge David Groner told Kilpatrick. "You pled guilty and you agreed to pay $1 million in restitution, but you have not been responsible in paying it. You have not been credible in this courtroom and you, again, have not been honest to the city of Detroit."
SNIP
Perjury charges related to a text-messaging sex scandal and 2007 whistle-blowers' trial led to his 2008 guilty plea to obstruction of justice and no contest plea to assault.
SNIP
After his Feb. 3, 2009 release, Kilpatrick was hired as an account executive for Covisint, a Texas subsidiary of Detroit-based Compuware. Groner then set monthly restitution payments at $6,000.
It was Kilpatrick's desire to pay smaller amounts that prompted prosecutors to delve into his finances. They accused Kilpatrick of hiding assets by moving large sums from bank accounts bearing his name to those under his wife's name, and wanted Groner to order him to pay a $225,000 lump sum.
"The court finds the defendant's conduct in this matter reprehensible," the judge said. "The defendant had not only continued to flout the orders of this court, but has continued his disregard and contempt for the people of the city of Detroit."
SNIP
Within 30 days, Kilpatrick has to pay $19,500, which represents 30 percent of two gifts paid to his wife and their three sons; $36,142 in moving expenses paid by the Kilpatrick Civic Fund; and $23,369 from his tax refund.
He has 90 days to fork over $240,000 in loans from four business executives. Groner also ordered him to continue making monthly payments totaling 30 percent of his income.
SNIP
But prosecutors also detailed lavish spending after Kilpatrick's time as mayor. They say he and his wife, Carlita, moved into a mansion in an affluent Dallas suburb and drive luxury sport utility vehicles. Bank records show big money was spent at restaurants and golf courses. One $595 payment was made at a Gucci store.

About 4,000 marines and sailors from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Camp Lejeune, N.C., who were scheduled to leave for Afghanistan this week, will instead steam to Haiti to support humanitarian relief operations. The unit will still continue on to the Arabian Sea for its scheduled deployment in the coming weeks.
But the decision to re-route the Marines points up the depth of the need for humanitarian assistance in Haiti, which experienced a severe aftershock Wednesday. It also presents the Pentagon with a delicate balancing act, since the already-overstretched US military can ill afford to get mired in a security-and-stabilization mission.
The US must do as much as it can while taking care not to create a false expectation, says Tony Cordesman, an analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank in Washington.
“There are strong reasons not to deploy US forces to Haiti because if you do, you get a mission of dependency,” says Mr. Cordesman. “We have to be very, very careful about our rhetoric; amidst a crisis, you want to assure people we will do what we can, but we cannot do what we can’t.”

That was Adams, with the couch stuck in the stairwell-- Dirk Gentley's Holistic Detective Agency.
Pratchett is similar, but markedly different. More romping good times, and more agonizing personal choices, too.

Couch stuck in a stairwell sounds like a bit in one of Douglas Adam's Dirk Gently detective novels. Always remember it since I saw a very similar situation trying to move a sofa into an apartment helping a friend move.
Not sure what to recommend as a starter for Pratchett. The early Discworld books introduce most of the characters, but aren't quite as good as I'm finding the later ones (they just don't finish well.) Of the "sequences" I think the Night Watch and Death groups are the most entertaining. The former starts with _Guards! Guards!_ and has some cute bits.
I find Pratchett "amusing". Clever stuff and I chuckle now and then. Occasionally an outright guffaw. But there is a bit of depth in it as he deals with issues under a layer of humor. For instance, _Feet of Clay_ centers around the use of golems, which are arguably simply magical mechanisms that obey programming and orders. If some of them act like they have will/wants beyond their programming, how should it be dealt with? (Could be taken as a analogy for the development of true AI.)
I'm hoping to find the Fraser book amusing. I have enjoyed his "Flashman" books a great deal.

Brown did get into office the same way Mandy, but, what the president does not get, is that it was a vote AGAINST his policies. Not to mention the need to clean up the absolute filth in this states government.
Here is an article by Marjorie Eagan, a Boston Herald columnist, a staunch democrat, who was a rabid Coakley supporter, although her support was solely because Martha was female. Explosives found at home of alleged Virginia gunman
Appomattox, Va. - A bomb squad discovered a multitude of explosives Wednesday at the home of a man accused of slaying eight people, and crews were detonating the devices as details about the suspected gunman came to light.
...
By Wednesday afternoon, bomb squads had detonated seven explosives. The blasting was expected to continue today.
...
Authorities remained tight-lipped on most details, including any possible motive. Investigators would say only that he knew his victims. Late Wednesday, authorities said the dead were four adults, three teenagers and a 4-year-old.
...
Police were alerted to the blood bath when they found the wounded man, who died on the way to the hospital. Sheriff's deputies discovered seven more bodies -- three inside the house and four just outside.
...
"This is a horrific tragedy," state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said. "It's definitely one of the worst mass killings in Virginia."

When a man tells me who he is, I believe him.
I didn't say his far-left tendencies went away altogether. I said they were tempered. He may want to do a whole lot of radical things, but the reality of the job has brought the realization that there's some things he shouldn't do - at least, not immediately. I mean, he did push the whole universal health care thing, so he's obviously a bit left of center.

OK, I’m looking for an upside.
Maybe I’m reaching, but here’s one: I heard from dozens of people yesterday who said they couldn’t vote for Martha Coakley because they’re disgusted with Democrats on Beacon Hill. Me, too.
I heard complaints about everything from the higher sales tax to three disgraced speakers and three disgraced state senators in a row while legislators dilly-dallied about ousting them (a judge finally put Anthony Galluccio in jail).
Some cited legislators who took a 5-percent pay raise while their constituents lost jobs and homes. Others complained about union abuses and double-dipping abuses.
Particularly enraging: Lawrence Mayor William Lantigua, who’s raking in $100,000 as mayor and $61,440 as a state rep, and socking away two government pensions.
Are his fellow Democrats ever going to broom this guy, these voters wondered, or will he just keep stealing forever?
“I was very impressed with Martha Coakley, but I had a real hard time voting for a Democrat,” said John Soldano of Medford, a food services manager. “Things don’t change or improve, everything from senior driving (the Legislature refuses to test dangerous elderly drivers) to allowing the UMass president to get a big raise.”
He was referring to a Herald story about University of Massachusetts President Jack Wilson’s recent 15 percent pay hike, bringing his salary to a staggering $546,000, even as the school raises student fees amid hard times.
Said Soldano: “How can they not stand up when things have gotten worse and worse?”
“Voters are unhappy with the way Massachusetts Democrats treat them. The blatant disregard, the corruption,” said Shelley Hachman of Billerica, a mother of three who works in retail. “The heads of unions are as bad as politicians,” she said, going on about no-show jobs, early retirements, sweetheart deals and state workers holding signs for Coakley.
“My husband and I met in the military. I’ve lived all over. Texas, Michigan, Ohio. . . . I’ve never seen a state so shoddily run.”
Does Deval Patrick get credit for cracking down on pension abuses and police details? Not much, she said, especially since flaggers make almost as much as police.
“Beacon Hill has to understand they contributed to Brown’s victory by creating this anti-government atmosphere,” said Democratic strategist Dan Payne.
No kidding. Symbols matter. Stealing from taxpayers matters. As for the conventional wisdom that few voters pay attention - a lot of them did on Tuesday.
And look what happened.

As I noted in No. 98, I heard him say this morning, "We were so busy getting stuff done that we didn't speak to the American people about what their core values were."
I don't think that he's gonna' boot the moonbats. I think he's still gonna' try to force his agenda down our throats.
You actually believe him to be more principled than I do.
I really believe that his sole agenda is to promote his own image and power.
I still believe, as I did during the campaign, that by the time he's finished he could easily be somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun if that's what he thinks it will take for him to be politically popular.

I think I'd draw the line at Communist, although the thuggish practices of the Chicago Machine would probably be a good comparison. I think he's equal parts heavy-hitting liberal and political opportunist; he has ideas for what he wants to accomplish, but he's also balancing that against the political numbers game, pushing the envelope as far as he can without breaking something.

Disagree
Unlike Clinton, who COULD see the shifting tides in American attitudes towards policy and bent with them, I beleive Obama really Really REALLY beleives he "knows" whats best for "us" and the country and will stay the course. He ignored the results in Virginia and New Jersey, and even though he's saying the right things about Massachusetts he couched it by blaming the result on the anger from the past 8 years

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The number of newly-laid off workers seeking jobless benefits unexpectedly rose last week, as the economy recovers at a slow and uneven pace.
Layoffs have slowed and the economy began to grow in last year's third quarter, but companies are reluctant to hire new workers. The unemployment rate is 10 percent and many economists expect it to increase in the coming months.
The Labor Department said Thursday that initial claims for unemployment insurance rose by 36,000 to a seasonally adjusted 482,000. Wall Street economists expected a small drop, according to Thomson Reuters.
Since when has down, down, down been called slow and uneven. Is that sort of like a plane crashing and the pilot comes on the intercom... "Well folks, we are going to hit the ground, but it will be a slow and uneven descent."

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday struck down key provisions of some of the central laws governing how the nation's political campaigns are financed just ahead of the pivotal 2010 midterm congressional primaries and election season.
By a 5-4 vote, the court ruled that corporations may spend freely to support or oppose candidates for president and Congress, overturning a 20-year-old decision that barred such contributions.

Gen. Honoré: Evacuate most vulnerable Haitians
CNN: Previously, you've mentioned "adapt and overcome." How difficult is it to achieve this in Haiti?
Honoré: You need the U.S. military. One airfield? Let's build two more. We adapt and overcome. USAID said, we have one airfield, how are we going to use it? They don't look at possibilities of building another one.
Building another airfield is something that should have been considered the first day. You can take a road and create another airfield. We have a capability to airdrop teams in with equipment to create airfields.
USAID said airdrops are unsafe, and it's disorderly to do airdrops. They were concerned that some would get food and others wouldn't. They started to drop five days after event -- the first drop of MREs (meals ready to eat).
CNN: So why did the U.S. wait before starting to drop supplies?
Honoré: If you don't have enough trucks, the optimal system is to use helicopters. But we don't have enough on the ground to get the job done. Ospreys, Marine planes, we have not seen them in use. There are some in Afghanistan, but not many there.
They fly like a plane, land like a helicopter and can also carry a lot of cargo. They can lift things and set them down. We spent 20 years developing that aircraft.
We don't have enough helicopters -- between the Coast Guard and the military, there are 60 helicopters in use now. Four days after Katrina, there were 200 helicopters flying in.
I don't know if the flow of supplies can keep up with demand, unless we evacuate the injured, elderly, pregnant women, babies, and the disabled. Hospitals will be overflowing with people who have injuries, there will be infections that will need treatment.
It is wishful thinking to add more hospitals. We need to think how these airplanes can leave with patients to the U.S. and other countries to be distributed to hospitals to stabilize them.
I am hoping that the State Department and the White House will start pushing for a U.N. resolution to start an evacuation plan for Haiti. It will need billions of dollars to sustain its people and to start its recovery.
CNN: How did the Israelis immediately set up a working hospital?
Honoré: Our military is fully deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The president didn't sign mobilization of reserves until Sunday. We are making right decisions, but making them too slowly to have an immediate impact on the ground. We decided [Tuesday] to open another airfield, they should have done that days ago.
Uh-oh.

Can they play football? Ever since Katrina, a couple of high schools in central Texas became powerhouses.
On a more serious note, I'm assuming that once they taste the good life compared to the hell from whence they came, repatriation is out of the question?

re: #409 MandyManners

Honestly... the bias in the media is so fucking evident that I wonder if these reporters even realize how transparent they are...
In a word: Nope.

Ok, these cheap shots on Obama are worthless. Fist off, he's not George Bush, if he was, then this article could have some validity. Second, Obama is not a conservative if he was, then this article could have some validity. And thirdly, Obama is doing everthing he can, in the most transparent possible way, if he had a "R" after his name then this article could have some validity.
Straw man.

During that same period of time, murders in the District fell by an astounding 25 percent, dropping from 186 to 140. The city only started allowing its citizens to own handguns for defense again in late 2008.

A day after their embarrassing loss in Massachusetts, splintered Democrats pledged to refocus their attention on jobs and the economy, and to draw sharper contrasts with Republicans, as they scramble to find a strategy to quell the populist anger that threatens the party's standing in the November elections.

Morning all! I have to admit I get a kick out of General Honore. I loved his comment to a reporter in New Orleans who asked an inane question and didn't want to let it go. The general finally said, "Son, you're stuck on stupid."
And when he and his guys showed up, there seemed to be some concern on the part of the gangs and looters for some reason.
General, can you tell us what you did to quell the looting?
Hell, son, I don't know. All I did was show up, light a cigar, and say "Hi fellas, wanna play?"

Gen. Honore is behind the facts on the ground. The US has already opened a second runway just outside the city to expand relief, and they're working with the DR to expand their capabilities as well. And the US keeps sending more ships to provide relief.
That's not to say that there haven't been problems, but in a country where infrastructure is lacking to begin with, and what little infrastructure was there was damaged, the obstacles to overcome are tremendous.
