Here’s an open thread for Thursday afternoon, as I make some changes to the LGF Blog’s main template.

Changelog: the banner ad that was between the top bar and the main content has been moved up into the top masthead area, to the right of the bouncing football. The search forms that were previously in that top right corner of the page have been moved to the left sidebar, immediately beneath the login section.

I saw that evolving, so to speak, because I had to reload to refresh comments a few times. At one refreshing, I had two search forms. Then I had a clear header, with only the logo on the left. That was nice. But even with a big ad there, it's still an improvement over having the ad in the center column.

Roeder takes the stand and promptly admits to shooting and killing Dr. Tiller.

Scott Roeder, who has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated assault, was sworn in and made no effort to deny prosecutors' claims that he killed Tiller in the foyer of Tiller's Wichita church on May 31. He previously confessed publicly to shooting Tiller.

Asked later by his own attorney about his views on abortion, the 51-year-old Roeder said he believes it amounts to murder.

"From conception forward it is murder. ... It is not a man's job to take life. It is our heavenly father's. He is our creator," said Roeder, who is from Kansas City, Mo.

Roeder replied "yes" or "no" to many of the questions he was asked, and his attempts to elaborate drew frequent objections from prosecutors, who say Roeder lacks the medical expertise to describe Tiller's practice.

When asked to detail the types of abortion procedures he was familiar with, Roeder answered "four or five" and then listed them. In one instance, he described a procedure as the fetus being "torn limb from limb" — a characterization that prompted a quick objection from the prosecution.

Before Roeder took the stand, District Judge Warren Wilbert barred Kansas' anti-abortion crusading former attorney general Phill Kline from testifying after listening to a preview of Kline's testimony without the jury present.

Not at all surprising; Roeder and his attorney are going to do everything the can to turn this into a podium from which to shout their message, and Roeder is happy to martyr himself doing it.

Sounds like the judge is more interested in seeing justice done than in allowing such bullshit. Good for him. I hope he sticks to his guns.

An appeal, of course, is inevitable. The whole point is to try to keep the cameras and microphones pointed in Roeder's direction for as long as possible.

Laser fusion test results raise energy hopes

The controlled fusion of atoms - creating conditions like those in our Sun - has long been touted as a possible revolutionary energy source.

However, there have been doubts about the use of powerful lasers for fusion energy because the "plasma" they create could interrupt the fusion.

An article in Science showed the plasma is far less a problem than expected.

The report is based on the first experiments from the National Ignition Facility (Nif) in the US that used all 192 of its laser beams.

Along the way, the experiments smashed the record for the highest energy from a laser - by a factor of 20.

It looks like the Tea Baggers 15 minutes are grinding to a brutal-nails on the chalkboard halt.

Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips likely assumed that scoring a dinner speech by the former Alaska governor and GOP vice presidential candidate would guarantee a huge turnout for his National Tea Party Convention, scheduled to start Feb. 4 at Nashville's Gaylord Opryland Hotel. But according to Tea Party insiders, the tickets for the Palin banquet aren't selling—and some conservative activists who have already paid to attend are now demanding refunds. With the controversial event shaping up to be a potential flop, some Tea Partiers are urging Palin to cancel her speech to avoid a humiliating public relations disaster.

re: #41 SixDegrees

Personally I feel we should be very concerned. The US market is only fractional part of the entire world market.

The SP evaluation of the UK’s under pinning’s … tanked the US market in the last hour.

The sooner we’re aware of this synchronicity the better…!

Huh...?

It looks like the Tea Baggers 15 minutes are grinding to a brutal-nails on the chalkboard halt.

I posted this in the new thread.

Yes, but it's staggeringly mathematically improbable.

I think bit.ly is pretty much the same as tinyurl, though I use tinyurl as they were first on the block. As far as Major Garrett is concerned, I find his outrage at getting mocked to be hilarious...obviously, he has some kind of issue with being associated with professionals...past experience maybe?

hehe Embarrassment can cause a person to do or say silly things I imagine.

"Stop laughing at me!!!!"

Like I say most of us have done it, and it's usually funny. Maybe he'll laugh about it later on :p

98 ohiogirl  Thu, Jan 28, 2010 2:10:02pm

something odd happened last night. On the fracktals thread I was quick enough to be the 1st and 2nd poster on the new thread. Never that quick so feeling kind of proud of myself. Nothing offensive in the least, my posts were 1 - hey hope I'm fist, and 2 - hey I'm first but hope I'm not the only one, and then it turned out to be a good thread discussing art, music, and cats besides the usual topics. Now can anyone explain why my posts were deleted? If I didn't know what had been there I would think it had been something offensive.

"First" posts without content are an etiquette breach. Subject to deletion without comment. I believe Charles has that posted as part of the rules.

define content - lots of first posts are off topic or in-jokes

re: #98 ohiogirl

The list is at the top:

Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"

102 ohiogirl  Thu, Jan 28, 2010 2:16:00pm

But mine didn't, in fact I made a joke that got updings.

It's because if it's actually the first post and you jump on it and say "First!" or any variation of that sentiment, it's a breach.

Yeah, but this is an open thread without content. How, please explain, can that be a breach of etiquette to open with a comment with out any either? I don't get it... Put it down to my NOOB status.

iPad, anyone?

107 oldegeezr  Thu, Jan 28, 2010 2:37:01pm

Would anyone please explain this "dinghy" thing to me...?
re: #103 Silvergirl

Is it a small boat?
Is it a romance situation?
Do we have to do it every time we agree with the previous poster?

Thanks and best regards...!

Yes. Threads have been jumped. Puns on testicles are now in vogue in the next thread. Get over there and get on the ball.

One man´s income is another man´s pollution. Can you afford to turn off adverting upon login?

Or find any other way for yourself to fence off the slippery slope into becoming another Beck, Limbaugh or the like who trapped themselves into political dependencies from the industries they advertise most.
