James O’Keefe Pleads Guilty

Politics • Views: 3,597

ACORN sting filmmaker James O’Keefe and friends pleaded guilty today to illegally entering the office of Sen. Mary Landrieu in New Orleans.

The four defendants who were arrested in January in Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office in the Hale Boggs federal complex in New Orleans pleaded guilty Wednesday morning in federal court to entering real property belonging to the United States under false pretenses.

Magistrate Judge Daniel Knowles III sentenced Stan Dai, Joseph Basel and Robert Flanagan each to two years probation, a fine of $1,500 and 75 hours of community service during their first year of probation. James O’Keefe, as leader of the group and famous for posing as a pimp in ACORN office videos, received three years of probation, a fine of $1,500 and 100 hours of community service. …

The judge repeatedly told the defendants that, as journalists, they needed to learn “where to draw a line” in their investigative methods.

Ya think?

Surprise, surprise, surprise!
Not.

Maybe for their community service, they'll be required to volunteer at ACORN (or what has become of ACORN after reorganization).

I'd pay good money to see video of that.

That penalty sounds about right, considering the charge and the fact that they pleaded guilty.

I would have liked more, since I think O'Keefe is a slimy creep, but that's just my feeling on it.

Speaking of, Bertha Lewis was arrested yesterday in NYC. No more ACORN, so she threw down with the SEIU.

Louisiana ACORN seemed to be active mostly in the New Orleans area, and even then, they were not particularly active or effective. They mostly organized protests, letter-writing campaigns, etc.

42 RadicalModerate  Wed, May 26, 2010 12:42:54pm

From the "It's about damned time" department:

Federal ban on gay men's blood donation to be reconsidered

Under Food and Drug Administration rules, men who have had sex -- even once -- with another man since 1977 are not permitted to give blood. The rule was implemented in 1983, sparked by concerns that HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, was tainting the blood supply. Screening tests to identify HIV-positive blood had not been developed. The policy was seen as a safety measure.

But today, with the availability of more accurate testing, activists, blood organizations and several U.S. senators say the lifetime ban is "medically and scientifically unwarranted" and are calling for change.

[...]

About three months ago, Sen. John Kerry and 17 other senators signed a letter to the FDA blasting its "outdated" policy.

Gay men, including those who are in monogamous relationships, are forbidden from contributing blood for the rest of their lives, while "a heterosexual who has had sex with a prostitute need only wait a year [before giving blood]. That does not strike me as a sound scientific conclusion," Kerry wrote in a March 9 letter.

re: #30 soap_man
There may be a retrial one one of the counts. The jury deadlocked on the identity theft count. He was charged with multiple felonies.... could have gotten 70 years in jail total, although no one ever thought that was even a possibility, nor should it have been. But the damage he did went far beyond Palin. Hundreds of people in her email list had their privacy breached, had to redo account, had privileged communications made public, etc. People lost business, clients, all kinds of fallout far beyond just Palin.
Kernell was convicted by a federal jury in Knoxville for intentionally accessing without authorization Palin's email account, and obstruction of justice.
After a week-long trial, a jury found Kernell guilty of one count of misdemeanor unauthorized access to obtain information from a computer and one count of obstruction of justice. The jury found Kernell not guilty of wire fraud. The jury could not reach a verdict on the identity theft charge and the judge declared a mistrial as to that charge. No decision yet as to a retrial.

I don't think it's over just yet, but...

We have to wait and see what happens with this latest "top kill" attempt. Having the USCG or the US Army Corps of Engineers in the Gulf to attempt this would make no sense whatsoever.

I doubt they'll make his do drug tests of even assign a probation officer. I think that stuff is decided by the judge. They'll just keep his name on file in case he shows up in court again.

I don't know about there, but in Texas you would. If you're on probation, you have a probation officer, and you don't do drugs or drink. You can get tested at random. And you pay for your own drug test, whether it's administered or not.

132 Locker  Wed, May 26, 2010 1:22:33pm

Who’s Afraid of ACORN, and Why

It’s important to understand the deep roots of the right’s fear and loathing of ACORN and the lengths they’ve gone to to stifle the group’s efforts to broaden Americans’ electoral participation.

Last summer, I reported in Shelterforce magazine on the Republican-directed vendetta against voter registration, orchestrated from the White House against those, like the grass-roots anti-poverty group ACORN, who have a history of working to register poor and minority voters. The vendetta backfired and helped lead to the firing of New Mexico’s U.S. attorney David C. Iglesias, who infuriated state GOP operatives for failing to go after voter-fraud allegations with sufficient zeal.

ACORN came under White House fire after registering more than 1.6 million voters in the past two national elections: mostly poor and minority people who tend to vote Democratic, and mostly in swing states. Republican operatives went after ACORN hard, with a media smear campaign, trumped-up lawsuits in Florida, New Mexico, and Ohio, and pressure on state law-enforcement officials to file criminal charges against the group. Days before the 2006 election, a U.S. attorney in Kansas City brought a voter-fraud indictment against four people registering voters for ACORN, spurring a congressional investigation led by Iowa’s Republican Sen. Charles Grassley.

The GOP voter-fraud vendetta might have remained exactly where Bush loyalists wanted it—below the radar of the press—had it not been for the scandal surrounding the firing of eight U. S. attorneys, including David C. Iglesias of New Mexico. Iglesias lost his job in December 2005 after he declined to prosecute a voter-fraud case against ACORN, which had been registering large numbers of voters in the state’s low-income and largely minority neighborhoods in 2004. Prominent New Mexico Republicans, including U.S. Senator Pete Domenici, had repeatedly complained to chief White House political strategist Karl Rove about Iglesias’ failure to bring voter-fraud indictments. Once Iglesias said he couldn’t prove a case against ACORN, his days were numbered.

ACORN became a target because of its successful voter-registration work. As the 2004 election approached, then-Attorney-General John Ashcroft launched a broad initiative to crack down on supposed voter fraud in battleground states, including Florida, Missouri, Ohio, and New Mexico, where ACORN was making headway registering voters. In all of those states, Republicans filed suits against ACORN for voter fraud, and, in every case, ACORN was exonerated.

Nevertheless, conservative media continued to smear the group. In October of 2004, right-wing news outlets pounced on a story about the organization mishandling voter forms and, according to Rush Limbaugh, “trying to register voters two and three times.” Two years later, after the 2006 election, the Wall Street Journal promoted claims that ACORN was under scrutiny for election irregularities with one headline blaring, “A union-backed outfit faces charges of election fraud.” An editorial included an allegation—that ACORN gave cocaine to a worker in exchange for fraudulent registrations—that was a complete fabrication.

Key Questions Arising from Inquiry into the Deepwater Horizon Gulf of Mexico
Oil Spill

In addition, the method of displacing the drilling mud with seawater may have interfered with the monitoring of the flow levels from the well because the mud was transferred to another boat instead of measured in the mud pits. Moreover, mudloggers were not informed when the offloading of drilling mud to the other boat was stopped.

That bolded part above is one point the Roi had questions about - he told me that transferring the mud to a boat at this point during this process is never done (or should never be done). For one thing, if there is a problem (like this one), you don't want there to be a possibility of it spreading to the boat that would be rescuing you.

The BP investigation has also raised concerns about the maintenance history, modification, inspection, and testing of the BOP.

Modification of the BOP - the Roi believes there were modifications done 2 years ago, at the request of BP, and then never reversed.

ACORN rage is all the rage? This comment from Balloon Juice (though originally meant to describe something else) sums it up perfectly:

The right-wing resentment he’s trying to stir up will probably work pretty well among a certain part of the population, ironically those who have been most hurt by the conmen and tricksters of Wall Street.

When Santelli says "those people" are getting a free handout from the government, we all know who he’s talking about. He’s not talking about YOU, white blue collar Joe, he’s talking about the shiftless lazy n***ers who got more government welfare in the form of subprime loans from Freddie and Fannie. It’s them lowlife blacks who are causing our problems, white middle class America! Get the rope!

Same as it always was. Turn the angry mob against the poorest and the least able to defend themselves, while you pick the mob’s pockets.

Has it ever NOT worked in this country?

OT (unless we broaden the topic to public ignorance in general).

I've mentioned the young Moon hoax believer who didn't know that countries other than the US had military forces.
I ran across another one the other day. This one had never heard of inflation.
I had taken my Rolls-Royce out, since it was a nice day, and happened to stop by a favorite local book store. A young chap who pulled in at the same time I did complimented the car but had to add that he didn't think any car was worth $600,000.
I told him that it didn't cost anything like that, since it was 40 years old when I got it.
He said he meant new. I responded that it had in fact cost 21,200 dollars new. He was incredulous and said you couldn't get a Toyota for that. I said you could in 1968. He asked why that was different and I said, "Er, things cost a lot less back then. A new Camaro was like $3000 back then and minimum wage was a dollar an hour."
HE SAID I WAS PULLING HIS LEG, NOBODY WOULD WORK FOR A DOLLAR AN HOUR, and that a dollar then was still a dollar. He did promise to check it out though. I asked him what he did for a living. He said he was an IT student at the local junior college, and about to graduate.

...ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, I have one final thing I want you to consider. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense!

Cochran
Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests.

Reine, what do you think of your Governor's response to the oil spill crises?

Like Obama, he is doing as much as he's able to do.

I'm not a big fan of Jindal, I've been disappointed in him.

HOWEVER, the Corps of Engineers is so busy studying the "environmental impact" of building sand berms using the sand already on the coast to keep the oil from coming ashore, that they haven't managed to issue the permits yet. LOL. As if the oil coming ashore won't have an environmental impact.

At any rate - Jindal has ordered the work to begin anyhow, to hell with the permits. Lots of folks happy that he's taking some sort of action instead of playing the waiting game. But honestly, there is simply a limited amount of stuff the state or the feds can do. As someone pointed out earlier, BP has the technical expertise and access to equipment needed to stop this thing - not the government.

Nevermind the three seperate legal investigations one of them by the United States Congress's investigators which found absolutely no evidence of fraudulent registrations making it through processing by the county clerks or of even a single vote having been cast by any of the false "Acorn" registrations. The fact that Acorn flagged the suspected fraudulent registrations and reported them when turning them in, the fact that it would have been a felony to not turn them in even if suspected of being false, those are ignored.

It is a fixed Republican meme that many believe even when all the evidence says that it is completely false. Acorn stole the election from the God fearing conservative White People!

So you are accusing me of denying that the pack is on a feeding frenzy? How silly.

BTW, for me it has always been more a case of Obama's propensity for ababandoning his supporters that has been the more interesting phenomenon. Remember how Obama similarly expedited Van Jones' pathway to the undercarriage of the bus?
Acorn was a Dem tool, which Obama used and then spit out the window.
Van Jones was a dedicated supporter who laid down his political career for BHO, whereas the Prez just sat on his ass and let him go down.
Fascinating, no?

You talk about Obama's "propensity for ababandoning his supporters..." you're not being truthful... see... well... what about... let's see... yea... what about Sestak and the job that was offered to him?

Does that sound like being abandoned by the Obama administration?

Perhaps he knew my mother's family. Her mother, my dearest Ma, was famous for her pre-emptive punishments. Matron of a large and quarrelsome family, she would, on occasion, reach across the table and backhand one of her children without warning or provocation, following it up with a "You know g*ddamned well what you did, and so do I." That's their story and there sticking to it, don't you know that acorn registered millions of false voters all of whom combined to elect Obama over the votes of the actual and legal voters? /

/

I think there's no doubt that ACORN's oversight procedures left a LOT to be desired, and denying this or minimizing it is just silly.

Some chapters operated ethically; others did not, a reflection on local operations more so than the national ACORN.

Now, has ACORN been overrated in terms of their influence? Yes, I think that's been greatly overrated.

Yes, I've heard that story!
And was glad to hear it.

Again I think oversight from the national org was seriously lacking, and some ACORN chapters did a better job than others. I mentioned earlier that the chapter that was here seemed to be based in New Orleans, mostly operated there, and honestly, when I would look at their webpage, they didn't do very much at all, apart from helping organize letter-writing campaigns, etc.

Other chapters, of course, were very active in their communities.

It think ACORN has been disbanded now, and recreated in various localities under different names. Communities need to keep watch on their local organizations and hold them accountable, ACORN-related or otherwise. Just makes sense.

Concur. Good post Reine!

How are the cookbook #'s going?

Time for another sale! Who hasn't bought yet?

They went on sale, um, mid-April, I believe, and we are up to 39 sold.
A mere 39.

With all the great features here at LGF, it seems to me that $16.35 for the cookbook (containing Jaunte's art inside and out, a lot of great recipes, Killgore's Very Own Gardening SEction, and Cato's poem on the back cover!) would be a really good deal! The 'profit" per book (split between LGF and Soldier's Angels) is a mere $5 per book; we kept it down deliberately to encourage greater sales.

Plus, folks, you know - these will be genuine collector's items in a few years!

Get yours here.
And while you're at it, check out Volume 1, as well.
Buy both and you'll only have one shipping charge!

re: #325 Bagua

Not necessarily, if they overcome the oil/gas flow and mud is starting to flow down the well, then it could be over in a couple of hours. I don't think this has happened yet.

This based upon this live feed from NPR mostly oil, gas and dispersant still. But what is confusing me is the time stamp, is it live or from this morning?

We need to see only mud ejecting, meaning the well pressure has been overcome.

Ah.
That's a much better feed than the one I've been watching, which is the same nothing over and over and over again.
thanks.

If four SEIU members did the same thing that got O'Keefe and his buddies fined today, there are a score of people here whose knees would jerk while their mouths spat out the word "thugs".

So that works for me in this case, too.

There were hundreds protesting on that guy's lawn and folks on LGF got mad we referred to them as thugs.

It is 5000 feet below the surface, there is no light at all that deep. Anything you see is lit by the lights on the R.O.V.s themselves. Last I knew they were pretty much all using xenon lights (highest lumen output for the wattage used) which has a slight blue shift but shouldn't deeply effect visible colors other than light blues looking darker, etc.

Here's how the Family Research Council envisions things going if Don't Ask, Don't Tell is repealed: first, more straight soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines will be fellated in their sleep against their will. Then, commanders afraid of being labeled homophobic will refuse to do anything about it. Eventually, the straight service members will quit out of fear.

Someone should tell these people that there are gay men serving now.

That's the question. The small white stream is the dispersant being injected into the riser. The reddish-brown is the oil/dispersant/gas mix, and the black stuff is heavier crude that has started flowing. This is not good.

The mud should be a lighter grey, IINM, also the mud should sink as it's heavier than the sea-water. My guess is that they have stopped injecting mud.

The mud should be a lighter grey, IINM, also the mud should sink as it's heavier than the sea-water. My guess is that they have stopped injecting mud.

The mud is supposed to sink and fill the 13,000 deep well, something they said would take about two days to complete at the rate of injection (it is a 21" wide cased well almost three miles long). I have no idea if it will work or not, but saying they have failed after only a couple of hours of injection just shows that you don't understand the concept of what they are trying to do or have not been listening.

They have to get enough HEAVY synthetic mud (almost 14 lbs per gallon) down into the well to counteract the pressure forces that are pushing the oil and gas up out of it. Some mud is going to be blown out of the leaks the entire time, but hopefully the majority of it will go down the well casing and eventually create enough pressure to stop the flow. At least that is the theory behind this attempt.

The FRC pukes, like most homophobes, are probably worried they might enjoy it.

Anyway, I think the interesting part will be the housing logistics. I say that assuming that male and female soldiers have separate sleeping quarters and shower separately. And if that is the case, wouldn't the same reasons for that apply to having gay soldiers sharing the same sleeping quarters with each other? How will that work? I find it humorous to think of the possibilities, but I hope they seriously work it out. If a gay person wants to serve their country in the military, they damn well should be allowed to as long as they meet the qualifications required of all others.

Ah yes. Now we fall into passive mode. Typical of the alcoholic brain. "Challenging beliefs" he says after calling us "pathetic followers of The One." It must be a challenge operating on ones own brainstem 24 x 7 not realizing what he or she last said.

Actually, it's pretty worrying. These people have a serious problem with moving on with their lives. I was just discussing this with Jason the other day.

I used to think it was worthy of my concern. Later I came to realize that it's just your typical internet derangement. They confuse reality with the internet along their own visions of grandeur. Some of it stems from feeling of abandonment which may be traced to their early childhood experiences. Or rejection and low self esteem. The internet gives them an ability to speak since they're typically very isolated personalities.

You have talent. You could probably make a living doing drunk Yoda impressions.

Yet another brain-damaged psycho pops up. It must suck to have such a pathetic life that you have nothing better to do than stalk blogs and be an asshole.
