I'm not worried about paying $8 a gallon. Hell, I'd welcome it as it would encourage people to buy more economical cars and get those fuckin' gigantic SUVs off the road. And maybe, just maybe, we'd get some infrastructure funding to put quality rail transit in all of the major population corridors around the country (Except the flyover states...someone has to suffer).

re: #32 Charles

It should have increased pressure because of the mud injection. Also, the mud will erode the metal and increase the leaks. It won't much matter because if the mud kill fails they will cut off the bit we see leaking.

The dispersants were injected at the broken riser, what we are seeing is right above the BOP.

That's almost what we pay in Europe, although a bit less now that the euro has taken a dip - only around $6.50 at today's rate.
In any case - as for the thread topic: we are cealing with people who cannot tell the difference between a science textbook and a collection of myths and folk tales from the Middle East - how can they tell a scientist from an ideologue?

This site was developed by House Republicans as part of an official effort to increase the dialogue between Americans and their Congress. Here, Americans are provided a new platform to share their priorities and ideas for a national policy agenda.
A few examples:
Thank God that the Rent-a-Boy website works better than this one.
Skin-tone paint-swatch style color cards at gun shops. Must be "taupe" or lighter to purchase firearms.
It's ironic that Muslims get all upset about cartoons depicting Mohammed, but we have to put up with millions of illegals named "Jesus." Just because they pronounce it differently doesn't make it any less disrespectful. There was only one Jesus, and you can be sure that he wouldn't illegally sneak into a country and drain its resources and commit crimes and take away jobs. I think we should deport every illegal claiming to be named after our Lord, or at least make them change their names.
constitutional amendment to make women not speak out on church topics like it says in leviticus
In the 20th Century as women's roles in the work place increased so has the suffrage of women. It is time to end this vicious cycle and outlaw women's suffrage forever.
I think someone should investigate why Republicans aren't posting on this website.

... the Wall Street Journal noted this morning, the stimulus is the reason that Texas currently has a balanced budget:[T]he economic downturn is catching up with Texas. Sales-tax revenue started falling in February 2009 compared with the previous year, and only started to recover a bit in April of this year. Although Mr. Perry has railed against the federal economic-stimulus program, billions of dollars from that initiative helped Texas legislators balance the current budget.

Gee, imagine that, pumping thousands of gallons an hour of heavy synthetic drilling fluid in might make the outflow stronger, gee, color me shocked.
You honestly have no idea how this process is supposed to work do you? It very likely will not work but determining that will take at least 48 hours or so from when they began pumping.

They're just lucky there's enough movement in the current to keep a clear view of the leak...if there was no current there, then the oil would have clouded the area around the drill head and they wouldn't be able to see the damn thing...then it would just be a permanent feature in the gulf.

The mud can cut steel at this pressure, no question that it is eroding the holes at the top of the BOP. It is likely eroding the hole/pathway inside the BOP as well. I'm not sure about any effect all this is having down-hole. But it certainly could create a rupture near the surface.
Should this fail, there will definitely be a worse leak at the risers, but this doesn't matter as the next step is to cut them off right above the stack but below the leaks.
The water is cloudy from all the mud, which is about twice the weight of the water. The oil/gas on the other hand rises. First they need to overcome the well pressure, with only mud leaking out. Then they try to force the mud down the well.

I have basically no faith in BP left, but I'm willing to wait the 24 hours to see if it worked. There's been too many "cataclysmic" false alarms from feed-watchers for me to try and follow its success minute by minute.
The last was someone screaming the well head had "entirely blown open," because the view seemed to be nothing but black gushing fluid. Turned out it was just oil-coated sediment kicked up by the motors on the ROV as it moved upwards to get a better view, and cleared out within half an hour or so.

The oil rises, helped along by the gas and heat. So the plume goes up.

Throughout the extended top kill procedure – which may take up to two days to complete - very significant changes in the appearance of the flows at the seabed may be expected. These will not provide a reliable indicator of the overall progress, or success or failure, of the top kill operation as a whole. BP will report on the progress of the operation as appropriate and on its outcome when complete.
So don't panic.

Some people need big cars. I hate the notion that every car should be the size of a 1970s VW Rabbit.

Am I crazy for thinking that government regulators should be contractually restricted from taking jobs with the companies they're actually regulating?
I can't believe they're not.

What's coming out of there right now is light colored, not the heavy dark stuff that was coming out earlier. I take this as a good sign?

Absolutely. The mud is grey, the crude is dark black and brown. If we get to the point where only mud is flowing out, then that is major progress. It means they have overcome the well pressure. Likely they can then start pumping more mud down hole.

What you're seeing now is lighter than what was flowing out of there this morning, and moving faster. This is a good sign - I'm not sure that what you're seeing there right now is oil. Much of it may be the drilling mud they're pumping down. They're putting a lot of pressure on that thing - I would think it would be normal for additional leaks to occur.

This report has a time stamp of 6:33 pm (central time, I guess, since it's a local site and that's where I am)
COVINGTON, LA (AP) - BP CEO Tony Hayward says the process of pumping heavy mud into the leaking Gulf of Mexico well is going according to plan and it will be at least a day before the company knows if it has been successful.
This is company's boldest attempt yet to plug the gusher that has spewed millions of gallons of oil over the last five weeks.
Hayward says the plume of gushing oil that is being shown live online and on TV isn't an indictor of whether the process is working. He says if it increases or decreases, it doesn't indicate what's going on.
BP hoped the mud being pumped in Wednesday could overpower the steady stream of oil. The company wants to eventually inject cement into the well to permanently seal it.

The good part about them was the couldn't rust and never needed painting, because the color was molded right into the fiberglass.
The downside was that like all crappy fiberglass of that era, it would eventually deteriorate with exposure to UV rays.

Top kill works or it doesn't. We'll know by and by. This isn't a sports show where we can enjoy sitting on the edges of our seats.
Long run, the ocean and its life does indeed metabolize a lot of the oil and the compounds it breaks down into under the influence of sunlight, and some of it gets sequestered deep. It's almost certainly doing less ecological damage, all in all, than the damage caused by a routine year of world CO2 production.
The failure to get another nuclear power plant up and running doesn't make the news, because it's the same old same old failure, day after day, year after year. Our quiet, undramatic failures to act in time are what will hurt us the most in the long run. Our quiet, steady technical progress toward economical wind and solar are our best grounds for hope. If and when we get to where we can produce electric energy at a cost that undercuts coal, coal fired plants will no longer be built. Coal will be used
for blast furnaces still, and it will be used in what we will smugly call the Third World, forgetting that we too were 'third world' way back in the 2010s.

Louisiana's coastline is indeed a fragile ecosystem.
Louisiana's coastal wetlands and islands are disappearing at an alarming rate:
Since 1930 water has consumed more than 1,900 square miles (4,900 km²) of the state’s land. This loss equates to the disappearance of 25 square miles (65 km²) of wetlands each year or a football field sized area every 30 minutes.

Perhaps he might wish to wait to crow about failure until it has gone on long enough for the people who know what they are talking about to mention it. Then again he can just keep claiming failure every hour based on nothing but the expected side effects of the operation and then doubly crow out loud if and when it does fail about how he knew it wasn't going to work first, right?

Heh. Heh heh heh.
They used a top secret special forces "airgun" to shoot those bullets! That is why the casings are still attached with the powder still in them.
And, and they hit a giant...err...pile of wool...yeah, that explains why the bullets aren't deformed either.

Then how about he post as if he is aware of the ongoing process rather than claiming non-sensical seeming setbacks after only a couple of hours. Yes I know and can tell that he is absolutely rooting for this to fail from the tone of his posts, he can't wait to crow that B.P. has failed apparently.
Thanks but no thanks, negativity just for the sake of possibly being right just isn't my thing. :(

What you're seeing now is most likely drilling mud, not oil, although they cannot confirm that because they can't test it to see what it is.
Just observing though;
What we saw earlier was sluggish and very very dark.
What we see now is lighter colored and moving faster.

We hear a lot about patriotism, but what about matriotism? Whatever happened to Mom and Apple Pie? People talk about how much they like pie all the time, but do they ever call their mothers? Not often enough, that's for sure.
Every time I try to do something on this site a box comes up that says "Something Happened." That is very unclear and we should be told what happened.
Aramaic as the Official Language of the US. We do this to respect two facts: this is a Christian Nation and Jesus spoke Aramaic, therefore, that should be our language as well. Anyone who refuses to speak the language of our Lord should be deported back to where they came from. This includes the Native Americans.
5 Total VotesCapital Punishment should be made cheaper by removing the process to authenticate whether or not someone is actually guilty. It's absolutely ridiculous how Capital Punishment costs more than life in prison because of this. Let God sort his own out from the rest.
They should close down bodegas that don't sell American pie, and deport all the workers.

Well, except they seem to be having a problem deciding that the environmental impact of sand berms is a better risk for Louisiana's coast than oil washing on shore. I still haven't seen that they've issued those permits. But Jindal's ordered the berms to be built anyhow.
