Calculus is fun! And it ties in with so many other things…the derivative of a function representing an object’s position in time, in the physical world, can be thought of as velocity…and the second derivative is the object’s acceleration! How cool is that?!

Earlier in the semester, she was complaining about a particular problem, that it took so long to work it out, and she said she could have gotten the same information quicker by just graphing an equation (or something like that).
So my question was: You can graph an equation?
She slapped her forehead; and said geez, it’s no wonder we can’t have a conversation. LOL.

Calculus, more than many other math classes IMHO, is highly dependent on the ability of the teacher to break through. For many students (including me), it’s a very different conceptual framework from the math that they’re used to. There are a few teachers, though they’re rare, who are able to express the concepts first and THEN teach the math, and everyone gets it.
(i met such a person later in life, so i muddled through calc the old-fashioned way…although when she gets to Physics or probability theory, she’ll love her Calculus foundation)

Heehee. Years of calc and I haven’t touched it in programming since (And, at least if I stay in my current field, probably never will). Let me say I was disappointed with the rest of my AP class. There was me, a junior, and the rest were seniors. There was a 5, I got a 4, and the rest were lower. I don’t know if the teacher just did a bad job or if it was simply a case of the students lacking the math skills, but that really shouldn’t happen. Then again, I also need to remind myself that I’m just a bit weird. rambleramblestupidkidsramble

It’s funny. The year before, the AP teacher had signed off on me taking the course without Pre-calc. Then, when I showed up in class, he was basically “What the heck are you doing here?”
Math is something I used to have something of a passion for. I lost a bit of it, though, since crappy public elementary schools basically taught me nothing after 2nd grade. Oh boy, another ditto sheet of long division, just like the last 50 times. x_x

Hey!
Couldn’t you find a college or university nearby and enroll for one class?

I never even heard of it in HS.
Or college.
And I don’t particularly want to hear about it now.
My mind just goes blank.
Calculus…is not for everyone, for sure. Nor is it something most people need to know (Although a basic understanding can be helpful). If you’re going to learn a branch of numbers for general use, statistics is way more useful in everyday life.

I know I’ve predicted this before but I think the wingnuts are hitting bottom. I’m not sure where they’re going next but Glenn Beck, Tea Party, Palin, et al have been played out. I have no clue what’s next.
Have absolutely no clue. Birtherism is pretty low, but I’m sure they’ll think up something between now and next November. They been beating this particular drum for over two years now and it’s getting a might worn.

He’s like me, he’s weary unto death of this lame birther meme. Can’t they just be honest with themselves and burn a cross? Because most of them clearly want to.
But it’s so much more interesting for them to focus on Barack Obama’s peen and on whether or not he’s baptized or circumcised. Burning crosses is so last year. They’re going for the respectable CCC suit and tie look, don’tcha know.

For a classical Newtonian physics worldview, yes. For quantum mechanics, one has to set aside some of those ideas, and embrace other ways of thinking, reasoning, and problem solving.
In a bar over beers, I’d argue that’s a “Yes & No” question. Tonight, I’ll just upding it and give you an internet rain check.

I was sure the Tea Party and bitherism would never take off to start with, so I’m wary of predicting the fall of either at this point. Been surprised by them too many times already, much to my dismay.

Can’t happen soon enough for me. They hit the wall this year and in 2012 the GOP can run a decent candidate.

I’m awful at predicting anything, given that before 9/11, I was sure Dubya would be a one-term president and I was convinced that McCain would never get the GOP nomination. That said, about the only thing they haven’t done yet is burn a cross or lynch Obama in effigy on the National Mall. They’ve said and done damn near everything else.

There aren’t any decent candidates for 2012. The only good one they’ve got would have to spend the entire primary explaining why he resigned to go serve as Obama’s ambassador to China. He’s better off waiting for the crazy to play itself out then run in 2016.

That’s why he should wait until 2016. Let the wingnuts nominate one of their own and get crushed in 2012, and let the adults come back in and take over again before 2016.

To be fair, it’s also gonna be hard to run against a guy upon which you were recently heaping praise. “I think Barack Obama is a great leader for our country, which is why I’m running to replace him in office.”

Well, that too. I think he should sit this one out, let the crazies nominate their favorite candidate, and should Obama win a second term, Huntsman could spend that four years building up his media profile as a reasonable, sane statesman.

Yeah, in 2012.
I’m actually hoping that the GOP nominate a teabagger or a crazy birther like Trump. Let them go as far to the right as possible, then when they get their inevitable curbstomp at the polls, the adults in the GOP might be able to start baling water out of that sinking ship.
