And thus I shall coin the term "Methort" (if it hasn't already been done).
Methort: The insane amount of energy put into a pointless, nonsensical project while under the influence of methamphetamines.

Funny you should say that...... that pic is from El Cajon.
EAST COUNTY UNITES AGAINST METHAMPHETAMINE
EL CAJON - Despite shedding its dubious distinction as the "Methamphetamine Capitol of the World," East County continues to grapple with many meth-related community problems. A recent report issued by the San Diego Association of Governments(SANDAG), revealed that adults who use meth tend to live in the Central and East suburban areas of San Diego County, while juvenile users live in the North County Inland and East suburban areas.

I bet Kragar could weaponize a yarn bomb, though. You've got sixty seconds as of this post Kragar. Go!
WHat would Varek do with it?

If you need to work 72-hour weeks to make a living holding down three part-time jobs at minimum wage without benefits in America, then meth makes it possible.
And since we treat our work force like another business expense to be optimized, we get emptied like a toner cartridge and tossed out once the pages start to fade.
That is an excellent way to increase short-term profits, but a lousy way to run an economy over the long term.

Heh. When my grandma gets bored, she tries to take me out to eat. Even if she just finished eating. On the odd occasion that I take that offer under such circumstances, she just eats a few bites and takes the rest home.
All she really wants is the company, and to get out of her apartment for a little while. The sad thing is, due to the dementia, she quickly forgets that I hang out with her for a time nearly every day, and that I more often than not drag her along to run errands with me.

WORD! My grandma got to be a rather dangerous driver. Poor reaction time, poor judgment, the whole lot. My aunt finally had enough, and had the DMV pull her license.
My grandma fought for over two years to get it back. Several failed written tests, and several failed driver's tests. One in which she drove with her wipers on in the dead heat of summer, and another that ended before she even pulled out of her parking stall at the DMV (she damn near ran two people over just backing out of the stall).
But after two years of this, the DMV decided to EPIC FAIL and give her back her DL. A decision that could have killed people, had my grandma not decided a couple of months later that she was no longer competent enough to drive.
57 | Gretchen G.Tiger Fri, Jun 17, 2011 12:09:33am |
Mom decided to stop driving when I moved her up to the Chicago area last year. She said there was too much traffic. AND she gave me her van. So, now I drive her around in her van. And she tries to pay for the gas too!
She is in a Senior Independent Living facility with her own apartment, meals provided, medical on-site, activites . . . . There is also a assisted-living wing.
So far, so good.

I'll pass that recommendation along, and see if anything sticks. One of the problems has been that my grandma is aware of her situation and sometimes expresses an understanding that she should be in an elder care type of apartment, but whenever my aunt takes her to look such a place, she recoils like you're throwing cobras in her face. Such is the disease.
Fortunately I live next door to her, I have no wife or kids, and I can keep an eye on her.

My aunt got her one, and SHE IS AWESOME! She's only there 'bout twelve hours a week, but she cares about my grandma above and beyond the call of duty. She does get paid, but she's a friend to my grandma, and she's always calling me to make sure I know about this or that, frequently on her own time.
Call it blessed, fortunate, or lucky, but none of us could have hand picked a better caretaker.
And prior to this one, there was another one who would be on payroll, and leave my grandma sitting in their car while it was taking classes at the local city college. My family was right to keep that from me until well after the fact.

Holy crap, they voted down corn subsidies.
Corn ethanol: Senate votes to end credits
The Senate cracked Republican orthodoxy on taxes and undermined the once-impregnable political support for corn subsidies in an overwhelming vote Thursday to kill tax credits and tariffs for corn ethanol for the first time in more than three decades.
A combination of record corn prices, which are damaging poultry, dairy, cattle and hog farmers, and rising alarm over the chronic $1.5 trillion deficit forced lawmakers to take a second look at how the nation spends its money.

The real question is not whether machines think but whether men do.
Depends on what "think" means. Personally, I think it's a guy just trying to be funny/smartass. Of course men think. So do many animals. So do a few computer programs. If you stretch the point, anthills think. If you stretch it further, some plants think. If you push the matter to its limit, some bacterial colonies think.
If you tighten the standards, you can strip things down to where you hold that few men think. Push it a bit more, and nothing and nobody anywhere truly "thinks".
I wonder if Skinner thought that was what he was thinking when he put his question.

I think you're over thinking this.

Think or react to changes in their environment based on instinct? And as for men, or humankind is intended, it seems that not enough truly think, or maybe, even know how to. Critical thinking and logic often need to be taught. Instead we ply our youth with testing skills which teach neither.

It has been proven that 99.44% of what we do is out of instinct or hard-wired into our psyche, we spend a lot of time rationalizing that we had somehow thought of it ourselves.
But i am not going to give up my right to dispose of that 0.66% of free thought and action that I am capable of and will not deny it to anyone else.
It is just a mtter of keeping the remaining 99.44% from harming us...

While I question your numbers, I think the proportions might not be far off. But that is why I wrote above that teaching our youth how to think is something that is of paramount importance. Instead we have people of dubious agendas preaching blind faith instead of the scientific method.

Nervous about his declining ratings at his terrible radio show, mouthy maggot sack Rush Limbaugh will not lose the chance to squeeze a few dollars from the shrinking Social Security checks of the tea party patriots out there who will buy anything with an American flag and a fat white man on the label. So here is Real America’s disgusting new Rush Limbaugh iced tea product, “Two If By Tea,” a clever name that took the same -1.6 seconds of thought that Rush puts into all his words. For the last $23.76 you have in the world (and only that), Rush will send you a case of iced tea maimed with the image of his outsized ego. These bottles that he encourages you not to recycle will cost you actual money, unlike those government-issued lattes the socialists are drinking.

I love anything with Curry. I did a months long job in Syracuse a few years ago. The apartment complex manager (Mr. Patel) had his parents living in an apartment just down the hall from where we were staying. I'd eat dinner with them once a week. I've spent thousands of nights in hotels over the past fifteen years. By far the most miserable nights were spent in those. It is to the point where; if I smell curry when I walk into the lobby? I walk out.

I've made a lot of money doing remodels. Most of the owners bought older places that were in desperate need. New stairs, handrails, and balcony rails cost money. Last year was the first new hotel, Candlewood Suites, that I did the steel work on for an Indian owner.

Okay, it's time for me to blaspheme.
I think Will Ferrell ruined John C. Reilly.
John C. Reilly, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti.
Three absolutely great actors. The best of the past couple of generations of "un-handsome" actors. JCR began playing in dumb Will Ferrell movies. Keeps getting dumber.
I watch all of his movies. But I love his more serious stuff. Boogie Nights; Chicago; The Perfect Storm; Gangs of New York; The Aviator.
I love his stuff with Ferrell... but... well... gosh....

Was just reading in Time about our national obsession with that trial. Apparently three news organisations are live streaming it and there's tons of twitter updates, etc. They're calling it the social media trial of the century.
I'm pretty fascinated by it myself, but haven't had time to get obsessed with it or follow the live coverage. There are limits!

This sounds like a douchebag who was inspired by terrorists, not someone who was sent by AQ or the Taliban.
The man remains in custody of Park Place, but his identity or any pending charges against him have not been revealed. Sgt. David Schlosser of the Park Police said the man was not cooperative with police officers, and that he could not address several news reports that an explosive device was found in the man's vehicle or that one or two other suspects fled the scene, a Politico report said.
Later in the morning, an unidentified source of ABC News suggests that the man had a backpage that contained what officials believe is ammonium nitrate and spent 9mm shells and written material with statements such as: "al qaeda taliban rules." ABC reported that the man seemed to be a U.S. citizen of Ethiopian ethnicity.

Technically the USA can't afford another military action and that include Libya. But, affordability and actions never went hand in hand with this activity regardless of party. Secondly, it's perfectly natural, in a democracy, to not have everyone on the same page. And that also includes Libya. We are not a nation of drones last time I checked.

Nutjob or terrorist supporter, doesn't matter. These people are still dangerous. I'm glad they are getting caught.
Here is some news coming from the real terrorists...
Al Qaeda posts ‘hit list’ of American targets
The US Homeland Security Department has sent out a warning after jihadist websites posted a ‘hit list’ of top American targets and vowed more attacks.
The list includes the names of 40 prominent figures from the government, U.S. military and media which it claims should be attacked.
The names on the hit list, which includes photographs and biographical information of the targets, are members of the Congress, Pentagon, executives of an American company involved in the production of drone aircrafts, and two prominent French executives.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has said the hit list appeared on the website, Ansar al-Mujahideen, after one poster highlighted Al Qaeda’s America born leader Adam Gadahn’s call to wage lone wolf attacks.
“While we have no information of any imminent terrorist threat to the United States or any U.S. persons, as always, we urge federal, state and local law enforcement, as well as the general public, to maintain increased vigilance for indications of preoperational or suspicious activity,” Department of Homeland Security spokesman, Chris Ortman was quoted as saying by Fox News.
The web posts also include suggestions to collect photographs as well as home and work addresses of the people on the possible target list.
Yikes!

Hey gus, how's it going?

The correct statement is median, but it doesn't sound right as a quip as compared to using "average" since that is the commonly used term that is so heavily abused.
Thus the humor when crossing common use with their technical "true" meaning in the scientific fields, be it statistics, engineering, etc.

'Marine Reservist' Arrested In Pentagon Alert
He has been named as Lance Corporal Yonathan Melaku, who was detained in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia with a backpack, it was reported.
The backpack contained 5lbs of a substance labelled ammonium nitrate but tests showed it to be an "inert" substance, it was believed.
A notebook was reportedly also found in his bag with words such as Taliban and al Qaeda.
The 22-year-old suspect is a Muslim who joined the Marine Corps in August 2007 as a reservist, according to Fox News.
Authorities believe the individual was trying to cause disruption but not injure anyone.

Peace process news coming out of Gaza...
Palestinians caught smuggling Israeli weapons into Egypt
CAIRO — Egypt has determined that Israeli weapons were being smuggled from the Gaza Strip to the neighboring Sinai Peninsula.
Egyptian security sources said Palestinian smugglers were transporting Israeli weapons and military equipment to and from the Gaza Strip. They said the equipment also included U.S.-origin body armor and night-vision devices.
On June 15, Egyptian police reported the capture of three Palestinian weapons smugglers in northern Sinai. A senior police official, Saleh Al Masri, said the three arms dealers were working with an Egyptian middle man.
The Egyptian police were said to have seized 10 Israeli-origin Uzi submachine guns, five M-16 assault rifles as well as ammunition, night-vision goggles and body armor. The sources said the Palestinian arms ring operated around the northern Sinai capital of El Arish.

How Palestinians became the baby seals of the Western human rights lobby
This new interview with American author Alice Walker gives a brilliant insight into what motivates trendy pro-Palestinian sentiment in the West today. Notice how effortlessly she flits between talking about Palestinians in Gaza and chickens in factory farms. In one breath she talks about the “cruel and inhuman” treatment meted out to Palestinians, who are “frazzled and suffering everyday”. And in the next she talks about chickens that are “raised under horrible, torturous conditions”, and the fact that people who tuck into chicken dinners don’t realise that they are eating “something precious, beautiful, rare”.
Palestinians and chickens – these seem to be the two big moral concerns haunting Ms Walker’s head. She sees their predicament as comparable: just as Palestinians are caged in Gaza, so chickens are caged in factory farms. And just as we “must help those suffering in Gaza”, so we must “change the way chickens are thought about and raised”. Ms Walker is certainly doing her bit. Next week she will be on the latest Gaza-bound flotilla, named “The Audacity of Hope”, which will deliver letters from concerned American citizens to Palestinians, which is of course just what Palestinians need. And she spends the rest of her time meditating with animals, in particular chickens, as a way of rediscovering “the peace we once shared with the other animals on the planet”.

It's easier to kill vacationing Jews at resorts in Sinai.
They might also be trying to provoke unrest or even civil war in Egypt. It's kinda vulnerable right now, I think.

I'm still very critical of the Islamic community's role in fostering terrorism. Glorification of Palestinian terrorism is a big problem. If I had to guess he was more of a "Four Lions" type who saw the Mujahadeen as an antidote to his own feelings of inadequacy.

I've made a lot of money doing remodels. Most of the owners bought older places that were in desperate need. New stairs, handrails, and balcony rails cost money. Last year was the first new hotel, Candlewood Suites, that I did the steel work on for an Indian owner.
Stayed at the Candlewood in Montreal. Was not impressed.

I'm still old school lgf on this stuff. There's a problem. Even though this guy didn't have any actual explosives he easily could have. There's a very fine line between the Fort Hood shooter and this idiot. We've been very lucky with some of the incompetent and stupid terrorist attempts but the motivation is still there.
I can't fathom why these wannabee jihadis do this shit. I really can't. In about 6 weeks I'll have been Muslim for 20 YEARS, and never once did the idea of going out hating on and/or terrorizing and/or killing innocent people ever cross my mind.
I mean, I learned the difference between right & wrong by like effing KINDERGARTEN. Becoming Muslim changed how I thought in many ways, but it didn't render me suddenly suddenly unable to distinguish between good & bad, just & unjust. If the problem was inherent in Islam, then I and everyone I know would be running around causing mayhem. But we're not. Most of us are actually pretty boring.

Bloomburg Business Week had a puff piece on Mormons in general, with a focus on Romney, called "God's MBAs" [sic]
In the article I learned:
- Romney killed someone while he was at the wheel of a car.
- He served his mission in Bordeaux, France.
- He boasted of breaking the Missionary Handbook rules to see movies and eat coq au vin. (See! He eats coq!)
- He tried proselytizing at bars.
And also, a source quoted in the article said that she knows "executives at top companies who express enthusiasm about hiring Mormon employees, in part because they are often faithfully married, which tends to make them 'more mature and better at managing their time, establishing priorities, working hard.'"
Of course, they become "more faithfully married" by spending tens of millions of dollars making sure other people aren't.

The problem is not exclusive to Islam, abortion related terrorism comes pretty exclusively from American Christians. However, Islam does have a serious problem. Not all Muslims are potential terrorists but there is an endemic problem. 9-11, Madrid, 7/7, Fort Hood, underwear bomber, Richard Reid, etc. It's a very long list and each of these cases has its own unique motivation but there's a pretty clear pattern. There's a lot of room to debate the cause, motivation and possible solutions but I think it's clear there's a problem.

It seems to me that the problem is political as the whole terrorism thing (as we know it today) hasn't always been part of Islam. And I don't mean political in the sense of the I-P situation becuase the wahhabi stuff started long before the existence of modern Israel. The I-P situation is just a way to keep people fired up. I think the culture of victim mentality has a lot to do with it. These people see Mujahadeen fighters as bad ass role models fighting oppression instead of backwards terrorists ruining their own countries. It's appealing to young males emulate them to feel empowered.

I have long felt there is this subset of humans that wander looking for something/anything to latch onto, in a very unbalanced, unhealthy and perhaps violent way. When they do find their umm, "place" it can be anything, any kind of fundamentalist or obsessive crap. From the Unabomber to the guy that did the IRS light plane crash. From the crazed angry Baptist fundie/supremacists in Idaho to the ME young man who goes to the wrong Madrasa and gets sucked into terror.

You may be right. I don't know if you were here when I told the story previously, but years ago there was this young American Muslim guy that proposed to me—he was much younger than me (in his 20's, I was in my 30's) and I was a single mom, so I think he was probably trying to do something "good".
Anyway, he had a strong salafi bent and was sitting there talking about the X-Men. I was like, WTF? This guy is like a little kid. Then all of a sudden he starts relating the X-Men to Islamic concepts of heroism and talking about self-defense, yada, yada, yada.
Anyway, a few minutes later his eyes get this beatific sort of glow (if you ever seen it in a believer, you know what I'm talking about), and he starts telling me how he wants to "see angels". I'm sitting in my living room just looking at him like, "Wut?" He proceeds to talk about becoming a shahid so he can get to seeing angels. The whole thing was beyond surreal & creepy. I never saw him again (I made damned sure of that).
Anyway, I see everyone has moved upstairs and I have to get back to work. BBL

It's a much clearer line if you refer to the Catholic community's role in fostering child abuse than to refer to the Islamic community's role in fostering terrorism, because there is a very (very) clear Catholic hierarchy, whereas the "Islamic community" is more fractured, and I think it is safe to say, very fractured. There are different sects, and as far as I know, no clear hierarchy in any of them.
That said, I wouldn't say the Catholic community is responsible for fostering child abuse, I would say the clergy and the hierarchy are. I wouldn't say the Islamic community is responsible for fostering terrorism, but certain imams and mosques are. Because it's not one organization, it's more difficult to draw lines of responsibility to stop it.
If you look at fundamentalist Christian violence, I think it's similar to fundamentalist Islamic violence in that certain preachers and churches are culpable, but not the "Christian community".
I think all of us have a little responsibility to push back against fundamentalism and violence of all stripes. It's not always clear where and how to push, though.

I usually avoid the comparison of Vatican child abuse and Islamic Terrorism. Islamic terrorism does have a scriptural justification aspect to it. The Vatican never really tried to establish a religious justification of child abuse. I do, however. hold the Catholic community partially responsible for not pressing their church and law enforcement enough. They turned a blind eye while the church abused their children. It should have never been allowed to happen.

Yeah, comparisons like that are a bit dicey to make. I thought it would be useful in this case.
All Catholics should push back against abuse by clergy and impunity from the hierarchy. Way before the abuse scandals were public, I thought about seeing what it would take to get excommunicated as a way of making a statement about the Church's stance on women's issues. I haven't considered myself Catholic for so long, I've lost that need to proclaim that I am not one of them, and threatening to leave if they don't do such and such would be futile at this point. I'm not going back no matter what they do. Still, there is a sense of responsibility.
I've always hated the quotation from whoever (Burke?) that says, "The only thing needed for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing," because if he's doing nothing, he is not a good man. So what am I doing? Today I'm fixing bikes....
