Exactly. I was called on to fetch an adult male African lion from a Pasadena (TX) park once that had wandered off from a "collector." I have big problems with people keeping such animals but, that said, I didn't hesitate to take care of the beastie. Windmills to shut at night following demise of rare bat
LILLY — Night operation of the windmills in the North Allegheny Windpower Project has been halted following discovery of a dead Indiana bat under one of the turbines, an official with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Monday.
The finding marks only the second location where an Indiana bat has been found dead under a wind turbine. Two Indiana bats were found under turbines in the Mid-west, said Clint Riley, supervisor for Fish and Wildlife’s Pennsylvania field office.
“While finding the dead bat is not good news for any of us, it does show the monitoring works,” Riley said from his State College office.
The find is significant because the Indiana bat is an endangered species and is protected by the federal Endangered Species Act.
I wonder if they would halt operation of the windmill during the daytime if an endangered bird was killed?

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Humane Society of the United States applauds Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland for issuing an executive order that prohibits keeping dangerous wild animals as pets. The rule bans new private ownership of big cats, bears, primates, alligators, crocodiles, and particularly large and dangerous constricting snakes and venomous snakes. Individuals who currently possess these animals and who have never had their licenses revoked may keep them, but they must register with the state and microchip the animals. They cannot replace them once they die or are relinquished.

You would have a point, but the US has one of the oldest surviving governments on earth right now. The Ottomans were in the same boat at the time. The best way to describe this is that things move quicker in some ways now than the days of the Ottoman Empire.
Alot of old governments were ended in revolutionary waves. The first being in the 1780's-1800's Time Frame. The Second was in the 1848-1870 era, and the third one after World War I.
By my memory, the US Government is the 3rd Oldest Functioning without interruption (Only the UK and Swedish Governments are older).

The only funny part in this sad situation is that one of the escaped lions ate one of the escaped monkeys, or so i read. How great is that? We have ten million excess deer (not a precise figure, mind you) and the lion finds a monkey.

No question. It just doesn't generate as much revenue as you'd think (which Oregon recently discovered) and certainly not enough to impact the deficit in a meaningful sense. But still, now's not a good time to feel sorry for the poor millionaires.
The high polling figures are on the millionaire tax rates - but there is broad support for a generalised higher rate.
An increase on those higher earners will yield far more than rinsing the poor - which seems to be the only thing the GOP pols can come up with as a policy.

Frankly, it's hard to raise more than 20% of GDP no matter what you do. We're better off getting more from higher earners, flattening corporate taxes while crushing loopholes, and learning to live within 20%.

I figure it's the only animal he recognized. You know, you're a lion wandering around in Muskingum County, OH and you're thinking "where the fuck am I" when all of a sudden, boom - you smell a monkey. And you think..."hell, i don't know where I am, but i know what dinner smells like".

We also need to regulate so that enormous damage isn't being done, so that we can stick within that 20%.
Hard to stick within 20% when you need to come up with a solution to AGW and clean up other pollution and deal with fiscal meltdown and ENRON style fraud etc.
The only thing better than solving a problem is not having the problem in the first place.

Part of a larger problem. Conspiracies are a great business model. Much better than the truth.
Take a documentary debunking UFOs, Big Foot, etc. -Time filled: 2 hours at most.
Shows about what maybe could-be might-be un-answered-questions possible-connections is-it-true-?, etc. - Time filled: Infinite.

Really this stuff happened about 10 years ago. I remember an article in Variety about how cable channels felt hemmed in by the theoretical topic they were named for. Around the time that sleepy little for-profit-PBS-type channel The Learning Channel found monster ratings with shows like "Trading Spaces", changed its names to TLC and said goodbye to "learning" and hello to ratings (and Jon And Kate Plus 8, etc). When's the last time you saw music on MTV? 1997?

GOP candidate uses Gay and Lesbian sponsored event to preach against homosexuality
The Arlington Gay & Lesbian Alliance held a candidate forum last night for Virginia Delegate Adam Ebbin (D) and Tim McGhee (R), who are vying for a seat in the Virginia Senate. McGhee decided to use the opportunity to reach out to the audience with a short Bible-based anti-gay sermon, suggesting God created homosexuals as sinners so that He could forgive them:
MCGHEE: For some of you here this evening, your frustrations go way beyond a state senate candidate. Some of you are beyond frustrated with God right now. Some of you refuse to believe in Him altogether. You’ve asked the question or perhaps given up asking a long time ago, “Why? Why would God make me who I am and then tell me that it’ wrong?” May I put a question before you tonight? What if that’s exactly what God did? What if that’s exactly what God had to do to fully demonstrate who he is?

I can't watch it. It outrages me too bad knowing how easily most of those animals could be safely collected without killing them.
I'm glad to be a long-time pesca-vegetarian, but I still feel terrible about the unnecessary killing of these exotic animals.
To make a political point, it seems that if we're ever going to make a better world, we'll have to greatly reduce or eliminate the meat-production industry. Compared with that, today's 50 or so exotic animals are really a drop in a very large bucket.

They couldn't be safely collected. They should never have been allowed to be kept under such conditions in the first place, but there was no way to safely collect them last night.

[Captain Obvious speaks. *cough* *cough*]:
Wingnuts like to point out that science is not done by consensus. True enough. Science is done through experimentation and observation (dumbed down; much more than that, of course). It's not a matter of how many people agree on a point.
However, what is the interface between the public (laymen, including elected politicians who make policy) and scientists? Laymen can't have direct access to scientific findings. Well, some are bright enough to understand papers, but that's an exception. The answer then is: the scientific consensus.
This consensus is not prescriptive - it doesn't decide what the science is. It is descriptive - it describes the learned opinions of the majority of researchers in the relevant fields. Can a consensus be wrong, in principle? Sure. However, there is no other equally or more accurate way to establish the science that should be used to make policy.

Quite true. I think it's because most boxers aren't M. Ali, and end up on the ropes shortly before they take a sharp hook to the chin region. I think it's regarded as a losing position for most boxers/candidates...Clinton being a notable exception.

Yeah, but Ali - Foreman isn't a good example. Given how the ropes were specifically made more elastic to allow Ali to absorb Foreman's blows. That fight was stacked against Foreman.

I went to see the President of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, speak today at the University of Ann Arbor. My fellow compatriots from Occupy Ann Arbor staged a walkout of the event to protest the man himself, who is as crooked as they come. I told him he had "a most excellent mustache" and asked him a question about wealth inequality in the US and how its continuing to get worse and worse. He squirmed around in his chair and threw a lot of jargon and buzzwords at me, said its worse in Latin America, and didn't really answer my question in any substantial way.
He also kept on proposing a flat tax during the symposium, saying that we needed to "flatten the rates and broaden the base". Flat tax systems are only supported by far right Republicans because of their extremely regressive nature.

Americans Blame Gov't More Than Wall Street for Economy
Republicans largely blame government, Democrats split blame between the two
by Frank Newport
PRINCETON, NJ -- Americans are more than twice as likely to blame the federal government in Washington (64%) for the economic problems facing the United States as they are the financial institutions on Wall Street (30%).
Now, technically it's not all Wall Street of course. But the morons are obviously ignoring the effect of the global economic collapse not the least of which being the Eurozone crisis.

re: #213 Aceofwhat?
During a normal fight between boxers, each of them will be on the ropes at one point or another. It's actual importance in a boxing fight is that it's a tactically important moment, something that the aggressor needs to exploit and the defender needs to get out of-- unless they're a genius like Nicolino Locche, who didn't have to worry about things like 'getting punched' that the rest of us did. But the defender can use the situation to their advantage, and it's not the defining moment of the match, usually.
The common-language meaning of it is "about to be finished off", which isn't really any more true when a boxer is on the ropes than any time else. It's dangerous, but it's dangerous for the attacker too, since the defender can push off of the ropes on his punches.
It's just one of those many occasions where the public perception of something is out of whack with the technicalities.

A few more links on 9-9-9:
Herman Cain’s 999 plan: a misleading pitch
There have been several interesting analyses done on the “9-9-9” plan. Edward D. Kleinbard of the University of Southern California School of Law identifies several unusual quirks, including a “disguised one-time 9 percent tax on existing wealth — no doubt much to the surprise of Mr. Cain and his followers.” Kleinbard, former chief of staff of the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation, says that “contrary to casual impressions, the Plan could be expected to raise substantial amounts of revenue, but does so largely by skewing downwards the distribution of tax burdens when compared to current law.”
Bruce Bartlett, a former Reagan administration official who now calls himself an independent, also offered a critical examination this week on the New York Times Economix blog. He (as did Kleinbard) noted that the business tax allows for no deduction for wages, which he said “is likely to raise the cost of employing workers, even with abolition of the employers’ share of the payroll tax.”

The former would look ridiculous on me and somewhere around here I think I actually have a copy of that piece of shit as well as another piece called Mein Kampf. Both are a disgusting read.
Why do I still have them? Once I obtain a book, no matter how much it sucks, I can't throw it away. Why did I obtain them in the first place? Well, you can't refute the writings if you haven't read them as well as a morbid curiosity for shunned books.
My Dad's got a copy of the Turner Diaries around somewhere.
Some kids in my class sourced a library copy of Mein Kampf when we read The Book Thief--carefully assuring the librarian that they were reading it only for the historical interest value. I doubt they would have been mistaken for skinheads.

You do realize that if the same DHS security grabs your crotch on 3 occasions, that's a common-law marriage in Florida.
I wish the person who operates the body-scan thingy didn't need to be sequestered. It'd be a lot more fun if i could give them a wink and a nod while they were scanning. You know, that "yeah, go ahead and look, baby" thing (the one that Jerseyites seem to find appropriate for most of daily life)...

'Most real'? I am trying to decide if that's a complement or a damning indictment. ESPN, meanwhile, is wondering who is the most 'Now'.

Which is something to bear in mind when people cluck about what a young nation we are.

He wouldn't be a bad choice. He's a good "ideas man" and pretty likable. I also think that in a debate he'd kick Joe Biden's ass up one side of the stage then back down the other.
Typically, people demonstrate at least one 'good idea' before being labeled a 'good ideas' man. Can you name a good idea of his?
Being a Republican doesn't count.

Can't beat Cain in the polls = on the ropes. I thought it was a fairly accurate characterization.
But he's beating everybody else in the current polls and Cain certainly won't be the gop nominee. So where's the relevance?

You think Mitt wants to spend his time cleaning up after a loose cannon like Cain? Having to apologize for his latest controversial over-the-top tirade? Cain's a sideshow, like Trump and Bachmann; he won't be around next Nov. in any important capacity.
279 | goddamnedfrank Wed, Oct 19, 2011 6:12:16pm |
Cain's 999 tax calculator is blatantly dishonest. He assumes that there is a 22% invisible tax built into the cost of goods currently as a result of the current 35% corporate tax, and therefore assumes that this hidden price increase will be reduced to 6% because 35-22 is roughly close to 9/6.
That's bad enough, but here's where it gets even more dishonest, with bad math. In the calculator he takes the 22% from the current price of the good but tacks on the 6% from the new reduced price. So if you input a price of $10 he reduces it by $2.20 (22%) to get $7.80 for the true cost of the good. Except there's a problem, if the true cost of the good is increased by a 22% hidden tax as he claims the equation he should use is $10/1.22 = $8.20. The reason for this is because under the plan he assumes that this reduced "true" cost of the good will be raised by 6% to reflect the new change in corporate tax rate. If 35 is to 22 as 9 is to 6 as he claims, then both the 22% and the 6% need to be applied to the same number, the purported true, original cost of the good. Instead Cain deceptively subtracts the 22% from the current price. In other words his equations actually assume the markup is 28.2%
So where his calculator assumes, with zero state tax, that the final cost of that now $10 good is $9.01 under his plan, it would actually be $9.47 if his math was honest, and we're talking here about someone who was a math major. This of course all goes along with his wild ass assumption that retailers are going to magically reduce the price of consumer goods out of the goodness of their hearts. When has that ever happened?

re: #252 makeitstop
No, seriously.
Cain can't make a public announcement without qualifying it in some way within hours of saying it. That indicates that his ideas aren't that great to start with.
He couldn't beat fricken Rick Perry in a debate, and he's gonna whup Obama?
Ohhh-kay, then...
When you look up gravitas in the dictionary, Cain's picture is under the antonyms.
Then again, that's true for most of the slate, if not all. Oddly, Ron Paul has more of it than most of them. He's batshit crazy, but he does have a smidge of gravitas.

The page claims not to be affiliated, so I stand corrected. Yet Cain is going around saying that prices will go down under his plan because of the so-called invisible taxes. So you're right in this case his followers are being dishonest, but it's hard to argue that they're not learning it from him.

Maybe Romney will have to pick a loon like Cain, in order to fire up the gop base (which has never been that into Romney, and after 4 years of trying, probably never will be.) Then again, we all remember how well that strategy worked for McCain-Palin in 08. So Romney might stick with a more traditional pol.
Every pundit and commentator thinks he's Nostradamus with his/her "Obama is on the ropes" prediction. But the simple fact is that Presidents rarely win re-election when the economy sucks, so making a forecast of generic Republican in 2012 is not especially perceptive or daring. This all makes Republicans excited and hard, but it's not the result of anything compelling they've actually done themselves. It's the result of the worst global depression in 80 years, one that no one really has any answers for. (I guess the gop can take a little credit for rat fucking Obama every chance they got, but that's neither a sustainable governing philosophy nor a solution to our economic problems.)
