I just love the historical and cultural layers of the holiday. It's a wonderful piece of syncretism in action, especially out my way where the Aztec customs combined with Catholic ones.

My dad and the neighbor's dad would grab a couple of beers each, and walk with us around the neighborhood. We got to figure out a costume, dress up funny, and we'd get more candy in one night than we had access to for the entire rest of the year. Everybody would be out. Weather would be great. Halloween is a blast.. Loved taking the kids around dressed up..
And it just keeps getting better.. First you are a kid scoring candy
Then you advance to 16 yr old causing mayhem.. Soaping windows..Playing Black ops on creative Toilette paper art work..
And then for the next ten years you go to the most awesome parties of all time...Half of which you'll never remember..except with a faint smile...
Then you have kids and you get to dress them up and take them out and see the smiles on their faces...A circle of life and halloween

Halloween was great as a kid, we didn't have all the rules they have now. Like having to be inside by the time it get's dark. We waited until dark to start!
As an adult I hate it. The kids have to be in by dark, which means you have to entertain them.

You could wait 'til after Christmas and do what my brothers and the kids across the street did.
They collected all the trees that were put out for trash pick-up.
And brought them to this one house where lived a Person They Did Not Like.
And they stacked all the trees up against the front door of the house.
Spreading Christmas cheer, yep.

Hi Reine!
We used to live across from the beach parking lot. They had two dumpsters there for everyone to dump their Christmas tree. And every year the kids would set the things on fire. Huge fire, fire station was 1 block away. Routine.
60 | Kragar Fri, Oct 21, 2011 11:00:24pm |
When I was growing up, they would put giant plastic Christmas statues, like 20-30ft tall deals down the middle of the main shopping street down town. For about 10 years, it was a tradition that sometime between Christmas and New Years, Santa would get stolen and end up somewhere else in town. My neighbors woke up one morning with a 30' ft Santa staring in their front window.

From the same pamphlet (1935):
Capitalism, as we know it, must depart! No better than com-
munism, it seeks to identify all wealth in the hands of a few.
The communist claims all for the State and none for the indi-
vidual. The capitalist claims all for his class and none for the
laborer or the farmer as he gains control over the State.Social justice seeks and demands a just distribution of the
nation’s wealth and a just distribution of the proñts for the
laborer as well as for the industrialist.Capîtalism and communism both destroy private ownership.
Social justice seeks to multiply it.It is yours to choose! It is yours to struggle for!

I'm saying that the usage of "third way" for the panoply of different political positions that are synthesis of right-wing economics and left-wing social policies has become less common, possibly because it gets confused so easily with the 'third position' types.
Or, to put it another way, while political scientists may still use "third way" for people like Clinton, in random web forums someone saying they're a "third way" fan are usually actually a "third position" fan.

Well, of course it is, since 'third way' can be applied to Bill Clinton. I'm not saying that they're the same term. I'm saying that a lot of people who are 'third position' identify as 'third way', to the extent that the meanings are mostly confused now.
It's a little like empathy and sympathy, which have distinct (and useful) meanings but have been so corrupted by mutual use that they almost mean the same thing now.

This county almost died after GM went down in flames the first time (late 70's early 80's). To make up for the loss of tax money they really clamped down on minor alcohol crimes. Arrest a guy, put him on probation where he has to pay fee's, and then arrest him again when he does something minor that violates his probation and start the cycle all over again. What it has managed to do is take a bunch of guys that have alcohol problems and put them on the street where they can't get a drivers license or a job. Before the folks retired we always had a group of guys working there from the Christian Center and work-release.

Text faux-pas leads to meth charges
[Link: www.wishtv.com...]
MITCHELL, Ind. (WISH) - A random text message asking if someone wanted to buy methamphetamine landed in a retired police officer’s inbox and landed a man in jail on several felonies.
Wednesday afternoon, the retired officer received the text asking if he’d like to buy meth or heroin, Indiana State Police officials say. An ISP trooper began using the retired officer’s phone to set up a meeting with the person trying to sell the drugs.
When police arrived at the arranged location, officers smelled an odor that indicated a meth lab was in use, ISP officials say.
Inside the garage of the home, police say they found Carlis James Vincent, 34, and a 16-year-old making meth. Seven other children — ages 2 to 15 — were in the home.
Officers found meth, heroin, marijuana and other drug-related items at the home.

One of the machine shops I have dealt with for years had a similar issue with one of the family members that runs the shop. He was already on probation for meth production (he used their equipment to fabricate an elaborate setup. It took the cops a week to get it apart.) when a couple of kids broke in his house looking for drugs. He called the cops who wanted to know what he had in a big safe in the living room. Their headquarters is in the next little town over from my shop. They're the second biggest employer in town. I don't think Tom still travels with them. He and his brother started their own church and I think he's doing that full-time now.
For a guy who some believe might be a candidate for the anti-christ I know an awful lot of ministers and church types. I went to a private christian university my first year of college. I was told every day that I was "going to hell but we're praying for you anyway". That is not an exaggeration. Every. Day.

When I was 18 I heard her sing in a church. During the song she hit a note so hard it set off the hearing aid in the old guy in front of me. He was trying like mad to get it out of his ear. I burst out laughing right in the middle of her song.

Really! Wow, lol I've actually been a FB fan for a few years. Friends would think I'm nuts, and not like I give damn, but they've no idea who that is, anyway.
Funny thing about her - she has a massive gay male following in the south. Divas, etc. Is she a diva? My mother used to sing soprano - not with a range like that, of course, but she could definitely hit the high notes. Guess who was her accompanist, and guess who had all the SP songbooks. She made a frickin' mint off of us lol

I like Amy Grant in small doses. She's about six feet tall too. Rawr.
Grant expressed an opinion that those most opposed to premarital sex and rock music often base their views in part on having experienced emotional distress. "'It seems to me,' she says as an after-thought, 'that people who are most adamantly against premarital sex have experienced some kind of pain in their own lives. Like the people who say absolutely no to rock 'n' roll. Chances are it has something to do with a past sadness
She don't like Christian Puritanism.

The Daily Caller has this splashed across their homepage:
'Reset The Economy'
Congressman: Obama should unilaterally ‘refinance every home mortgage’ [VIDEO]
[Link: dailycaller.com...]
Virginia Democratic Rep. Jim Moran told The Daily Caller on Thursday evening that President Obama should “refinance every home mortgage” without congressional approval in order to “reset the economy.”
Moran told TheDC that he would “like to see” the Obama administration “refinance every home mortgage at three-and-a-half to four percent” interest, which he said can be accomplished without approval from Congress.
“The banks aren’t doing it, but the federal government can borrow money at three-and-a-half percent today. They should use that money to refinance every home mortgage, and that would put $750 billion into homeowners pockets,” he said. “It would reset the economy, and I think it’s the one thing that would most quickly get this economy back on its feet.”
Moran said that the plan “doesn’t cost any federal money. The people who are opposed to it are the Wall Street investment banks, the ones that we bailed out for hundreds of billions of dollars,” he added. “The federal government could do that because most of these loans are now owned by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.”
This might come as a shock but I could have been talked into supporting something like this 3 years ago because I think Moran has a point. I think he's crazy about it not costing any federal money but we spent $3T in bailouts (more than $1.5T in TARP and the stimulus package alone), $750B sounds like a steal.

Ha! We had a service every day, no open toed shoes (toes were the devils work I guess) or shorts were allowed, a family meal 3x a week we all had to dress up for and attend, but there were girls. You had to keep 6" apart and they weren't allowed to be in an opposite sex dorm. OTOH, to be crude, the line "I want to be a minister and I think I love you" worked like a charm for the first 3 weeks.
Nobody told me a thing about any of that until the day I showed up on campus. I remember being met at the car by a group of smiling too wide white kids using the world "glorious" too often and way too excited to meet me and thinking right away that it wasn't going to end well...

Occupy Wall Street Protester Scales Statue, Says He Won't Come Down Until Bloomberg Quits
NEW YORK – An "Occupy Wall Street" protester who scaled a 40-foot-high steel art exhibit in Lower Manhattan early Saturday said he will not come down until Mayor Michael Bloomberg has resigned, Fox News Channel reported.
Hostage negotiators were talking to the man, whose said his name is Dylan, more than two hours after he climbed the orange exhibit at the entrance to the group's Zuccotti Park base.
Police and emergency medical service units were also on standby while the street was shut down, WABC reported.

So, unfortunately, there is no easy out. Perhaps the best chance would be to find a way to get ahead of the mortgage defaults—that is, to have restructurings and debt forgiveness, albeit with some kind of quid pro quo. That is very hard to do. But if there were a way to write down and forgive some of the mortgage debt, that would be money well spent.

Senate rejects Webb's prison reform plan
[Link: hamptonroads.com...]
Webb has argued that changes are long overdue - the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, the bill notes, and half of prisoners will return to prison within three years of release. A disproportionately large share of minorities are behind bars.
"It is time for us to move forward to get the comprehensive advice of the best minds in America in terms of how to fix our broken criminal justice system," Webb said in a floor speech before the vote. He noted that more than 70 organizations, including law enforcement groups and civil liberty organizations, have endorsed the project.
.....
A majority of senators supported Webb's amendment, 57-43, but it fell three votes short of the 60 needed to be added to a spending bill.Webb blamed Republicans for blocking the legislation and vowed after the vote to keep pressing for the commission.
"Their inflammatory arguments defy reasonable explanation and were contradicted by the plain language of our legislation," Webb said in a prepared statement. "To suggest, for example, that the nonbinding recommendations of a bipartisan commission threaten the Constitution is absurd."
All the Senate Democrats, including Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, and four Republicans supported the bill.

It should cost you to incarcerate people. If a county is losing a ton of money in their judicial system because they're locking too many people up maybe that should be a clue there's something wrong.

From Iranian state news agency....
Iranian Students Renew Support for Occupy Wall Street Movement
The students voiced support for anti-capitalism protests throughout the US, and condemned the brutal clampdown on peaceful demonstrations by the US police.
The students chanted slogans like "Down with America", "Down with Israel" and carried placards in support of the movement.
Sure doesn't sound like the usual student protest in Iran, more like a state sponsored rally. Most pics have captions like this...

Guns aren't all they're cracked up to be though target shooting can be fun. For protection, I feel a lot more safe and confident having had martial arts training than I do carrying a gun.

It takes a lot of practice and lots of money spent on ammo to become proficient in handling a firearm. It is a serious sport.
Still, basic safety training and education, IMHO, should be taught in High School. Ignorance of guns is not a good thing.

Yeah, I know.
I have another friend (who I recently regained) who seems to do that. It's like she can't be single and wait around for the right one. Nice evangelical girl, but she's going to be hurt alot if she keeps doing this.
I already have a vague idea what someone will have to be like in my case.
-Patient (to deal with Autism)
-Able to deal with massive amounts of affection
Everyone knows that, while I am chilly with guys (bad experiences in High School and College) I am much more relaxed with women. The only threat this Muslim poses is an Ambush Hug.
-Able to guide me socially
-Willing to deal with me being a hopeless romantic who likes being chivalrous
I've gotten some people griping to me about holding open doors for them.
-Very Tolerant
The Muslim Women I know at college are astoundingly average in cultural tastes. One example is Music. They like guys like Lupe Fiasco. The only thing I share in common is Taylor Swift. I do follow a mainstream, The Northern European Mainstream. So there's that too.

I agree that training is essential IF you want to have and shoot guns. There are many people who have no such interest and never touch a gun in their lives so that training would be moot. The only reason I was ever trained was for professional reasons. My hubby bought me a handgun for protection but I've never had a lot of interest in it.

I don't agree. I've introducted a few women to shooting thru the Safety Courses at our club and it helped them with their fear of guns.
Even if there is no fear -- they are no longer susceptible to blatant anti-gun propaganda that is "subliminally" put in to movies and popular media. They can recognize when an "actor" is not using the firearm correctly, etc. . . . .
If they should ever be the victim of a crime, the'll be less likely to be frozen in fear if the criminal has a firearm. I always ask, "if someone pointed a starter pistol at you would you submit to a rape?" After basic training, they most likely wouldn't.
Criminals prey on ignorance and fear.

This is a valid point and why I encourage women to train in martial arts. If someone points a gun at me within range of my hands, I don't care if it's a real gun or a starter pistol, the person holding it will be disarmed quickly and will have a well broken trigger finger in the process.

Ahmadinejad slams NATO, denounces U.S. pressure in Middle East
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday slammed NATO's role in Libya and said the United States -- and all other countries -- should stay out of the conflict in Syria.
"We think it is the will of the people that should work and prevail everywhere. Justice, freedom and respect to people -- this is the right of all nations," he said in an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria.
Ahmadinejad said his views on Libya were "not different" following the death Thursday of ousted Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi. He said NATO's military campaign exacerbated the conflict and undermined the sovereignty of the nation.

Ahmadinejad slams NATO, denounces U.S. pressure in Middle EastIranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday slammed NATO's role in Libya and said the United States -- and all other countries -- should stay out of the conflict in Syria.

Iran warns dictators of humiliating, dishonorable fate

Iran greeted the news of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's demise with a warning for other dictators. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said that "a humiliating and dishonorable fate awaits oppressors that trample upon the rights of their nations," PressTV reported.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman also said Iran hopes that the end of the Gaddafi regime signals a new chapter in Libya's politics, preparing for the formation of a democratic government, according to the report.

It seems their playing both side of the fence...
The official stated that in view of the new developments in Libya and materialization of one of the main wishes of the Libyan people there will be no other pretext for continuation of intervention by foreign forces in Libya.
“It is necessary that with immediate exit of foreign troops from Libya, the Libyan people will find the opportunity to decide about their own fate in an atmosphere free from any foreign intervention,” he said.
It makes sense from a strategic/diplomatic standpoint. The new Libyan government is going to be at least somewhat friendly with the West for a while. It makes sense that Iran would want to make nice with the new government.

Occupy Wall Street protesters nearly stabbed in Albuquerque
...No one was hurt.
Aguirre talked with KOB Eyewitness News as he sat handcuffed in the back of a police car.
He said he was angry at the (Un)Occupy Albuquerque protesters, a faction of the national Occupy Wall Street movement.
“They have no business being here man,” Aguirre said. “I told them to leave and get out.”
Protesters reported that Aguirre appeared intoxicated, confrontational and at one point exposed a blade.
"He was just yelling at us saying go home saying get a job and just acting against us in a violent way,” Nick Uccan said.
[...]
He told police he was recruited to play basketball for UNM in the 1980s and confronted the protesters as a service to the university.
He admitted that he was on a drinking binge, police said.
A lone, drunken nut. I don't think they should allow the media to interview a suspect while he's drunk and cuffed and laying on the seat in the back of a police car, but the video is at the link.

Strictly speaking, atheism states no such thing. Atheism doesn't even make a claim beyond declaring lack of belief in gods (and in some cases stating positively that gods do not exist). It is perfectly coherent for a person to be an atheist and to believe in existence of a soul, and an afterlife for that soul elsewhere.

Well yes and no. I was resisting the MSM message as I percieve the routine level of BS that was being applied. Sure I figured this to be an angry lefty response to the failures in the economy and the Tea Party. I expected left leaning partisans. So I was skeptical. And largely wrong.
What I did find was a far more diverse bunch, far less partisan, which I happen to really appreciate as a partisan atheist. So at this point I am comfortable saying I support many of the principles espoused over there.
Next chapter I'll bring some hard questions as the next natural step in the progression of my documentary. First was see whats up and introduce some personalities and their hopes. Next, a more critical look at the flaws and how they may be addressed. And resolve some audio hardware issues, like static on my wireless lavalier mic. :-) Hey elevating ordinary voices to the halls of government and corporate boards I can really support. At the same time I certainly disagree with plenty of those voices. But still, better them than an unfettered corporate influence.

The Iranian regime has a couple reasons for wanting to shill for OWS. Probably the most important is the antiwar aspect of the protests. Especially after the Iranian plot to kill the Saudi ambassador got busted last week. Obama might be feeling frisky.
Like I said, unclear about how good their understanding of the situation is--but if they're counting on the OWS to make Obama less frisky, they're betting on the wrong horse.

ADL Calls On 'Occupy Wall Street' Organizers To Condemn Anti-Semitic Remarks Made At Rallies
New York, NY, October 17, 2011 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today called on organizers, participants and supporters of the worldwide "Occupy Wall Street" movement to condemn anti-Semitic signs and comments that have appeared at some of the protest rallies across the country and around the world.
Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:
We are seeing some individuals holding anti-Semitic signs at the "Occupy Wall Street" rallies, and some videos posted on YouTube from the rallies have shown individuals expressing classic anti-Semitic beliefs such as "Jews control the banks" and "Jews control Wall Street." While we believe that these expressions are not representative of the larger views of the OWS movement, it is still critical for organizers, participants and supporters of these rallies to condemn such bigoted statements clearly and forcefully.
There is no evidence that these anti-Semitic conspiracy theories are representative of the larger movement or that they are gaining traction with other participants. However, history demonstrates time and again how economic downturns can embolden anti-Semites to spread malicious conspiracy theories and promote stereotypes about Jews and money. As a consequence, these statements must not be left unchallenged.
The League continues to monitor the tenor and messages at the demonstrations to ensure that they do not get hijacked by extremists or anti-Semitic elements.

I don't know. Catholic church politics aren't something I'm well-versed in, but the Catholic church has been making signs of alliance with the right-wing, whereas they previously were much more aligned with the social aspects of the left. It may be something as stupid and ignoble as the anti-gay and anti-woman stuff the Catholic Church can't seem to leave behind.
American Catholics differ quite a lot from the positions of the Roman Catholic Church, so my understanding is limited.

Not familiar with the case, but there's no such thing as "not accepting back', if the theological problem has been fixed.

Well, at least they're consistent in their racist idiocy:
Birthers say Marco Rubio is not eligible to be president
Unable to prevent Barack Obama from becoming president, rigid followers of the Constitution have turned their attention to another young, charismatic politician many think could one day occupy the White House.
The birthers are calling for U.S. Sen Marco Rubio, the budding Republican star from Florida.
"It's nothing to do with him personally. But you can't change the rules because you like a certain person. Then you have no rules," said New Jersey lawyer Mario Apuzzo.
Forget about Photoshopped birth certificates; the activists are not challenging whether Rubio was born in Miami. Rather, they say Rubio is ineligible under Article 2 of the Constitution which says "no person except a natural born citizen ... shall be eligible to the Office of President."
The rub is that "natural born citizen" was never defined.
The birthers rely on writings at the time of the formation of the republic and references in court cases since then to contend that "natural born" means a person born to U.S. citizens. Rubio was born in 1971 at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital, his office said, but his parents did not become citizens until 1975.

Benedict has been doing a lot to re-admit and accept the very traditionalist and hardcore anti-Vatican II set of priests. It's a steep change from John Paul II, and frankly baffles me as to how it's going to help the Catholic Church survive. There are so many things I find wrong with what the church has become...Raping Children, Siding with Nazi's during the war, I mean really the list goes on and on.. Afternoon, Lizards,
It's been a rough week. My wife's grandmother passed away on Monday, and her funeral was yesterday morning. While we were getting ready to leave for the funeral, we got a text message telling us that a bandleader here on LI that I often played pedal steel with had also passed away sometime during the week.
My wife and I left the funeral, went home and changed clothes and loaded guitars into the truck, then went out to my friend's home base club and performed at a musical tribute for him last night.
It was a sad time but very uplifting. My friend was beloved by many, many people here on the island, and the show last night had a distinct 'jazz funeral' feel to it. We played for nearly six hours and the crowd really let go.

I feel worst for regular Catholics like my parents who, while they're social conservatives, don't want their social conservatism made into law. They feel abandoned by the Church in a lot of ways, especially after having been dunned for contributes to a charity fund that they later discovered was used to pay for legal defense and settlements for abusive priests.

Big hug.
Thanks, SFZ.
I tried to append my last post up above, but pencil time ran out and I wanted to mention something further about the situation.
My wife's grandmother has been suffering from creeping dementia over the last few years, and it had become somewhat of a burden for the family to care for her. My mother-in-law and her sister had assumed the bulk of caring for her, and they've been running themselves ragged looking ater their mother.
The silver lining in the cloud was that in her last couple of days she got to spend a lot of time with her children, and by their measure these were 'good' days - she mostly remembered who her children were and recognized her surroundings. They took her out to the harbor on Monday and enjoyed a nice lunch and the beautiful surroundings.
At the end of the day, she said goodnight to her kids and went to bed and passed away gently in her sleep. It gives the family a lot of solace that at the end, she was aware that she was surrounded with people who loved her.
My wife and I spoke a lot this week about her mixed emotions - sad that her grandmother (a big role model for my wife) was gone while being relieved that the family no longer had to witness their mother slipping away from them. It's a difficult thing to reconcile.

Sounds very familiar.
Sex-segregated dorms in homo-hating environments can make for much cognitive dissonance.
