Greenwald’s Partner David Miranda Profiled at Buzzfeed, With a Radically Different Story

Everything they said about the Heathrow detention was a lie
World • Views: 31,188

This new Buzzfeed article on Glenn Greenwald’s partner David Miranda is obviously intended to be supportive, but it could end up sabotaging Miranda’s own case with the British government — because in the course of trying to prove that Miranda was not a “mule,” author Natasha Vargas-Cooper actually ends up exposing another blatant series of lies by Greenwald and Miranda about Miranda’s detention at Heathrow Airport: David Miranda Is Nobody’s Errand Boy.

After I spent several weeks with Miranda and Greenwald in and around their home in the upscale, artist-friendly Rio neighborhood of Gavea over the last month, one thing has become very clear: David Miranda knew exactly what he was doing. To believe he was played as some type of dupe or mule by Greenwald not only ignores the real nature of their relationship but also assumes that there’s some safer way to transport sensitive documents across the globe. Is there any device more fail-safe and secure than the person you love the most? Does Apple make that sort of product?

Miranda knew very well that he was traveling from Rio to Berlin to see Greenwald’s reporting partner, documentarian Laura Poitras, and that he would be returning through the U.K., all the time carrying a heavily encrypted flash drive directly related to the trove of documents that former and now notorious CIA employee Edward Snowden had vacuumed from the National Security Agency and had given to Greenwald earlier in the year.

The sections I’ve set in bold text are very interesting, given these statements by Miranda and Greenwald when they were interviewed by CNN’s Anderson Cooper shortly after the incident (the relevant section begins at 4:53):

YouTube

COOPER: David, I know you — you had said that they took a laptop, memory sticks, an external hard drive, your cell phone and more. Do you know what were stored on those devices? What — were there — was there classified material?

MIRANDA: I don’t know that. I mean I was just taking the file — those materials back to Glenn. I mean, you know, Glenn, being working with a lot of stories along the years, I didn’t quite follow everything that he writes every day. I can’t follow him because I have to have a life. And I mean I can’t know everything that he’s been working with.

So back in August, Miranda and Greenwald were playing it as if Miranda were completely ignorant of what he was carrying. He “didn’t follow” everything Greenwald writes, because he had his own life. Documents? What documents?

Both of them seem to be slightly smirking in this video, like they were sharing some kind of secret joke at Anderson Cooper’s expense — and they were. Because today, Miranda’s story is radically different:

“I have been involved in every aspect of Glenn’s life, why wouldn’t I be a part of this?” Miranda asserts over lunch at a fashion mall in Rio’s São Conrado neighborhood the next afternoon. “I think what Snowden did was heroic. Glenn and Laura’s reporting is so important. It caused a serious debate about privacy and internet freedom in my country and around the world. I’m so proud to be able to play any role at all in that. I’d go to jail for that.”

[…]

“Glenn and I have talked all the time about what doing these stories would do to our lives. Since we met, I’ve pushed him and supported him,” Miranda says. He starts counting on his fingers: “I’ve helped him negotiate contracts; I make sure he gets paid what he deserves — Glenn just wants to work and sometimes will do it for cheap.” Miranda’s list continues with ascending urgency. “When Glenn publishes NSA stories in foreign countries, I help reach out to press so the stories get the most exposure. For a while we considered starting our own website to publish the NSA documents; when Glenn thought The Guardian was taking too long to publish the first NSA story, I told him he had to make them know he would go somewhere else to publish if they delayed too much.”

For someone who “doesn’t follow everything Greenwald does,” he certainly seems to follow and be actively involved in everything Greenwald does. In fact, it sounds like Miranda is Greenwald’s de facto manager.

And one more point; showing that Miranda was fully complicit in the document-smuggling scheme does nothing to refute the statement that he was a “mule.” In fact, it fully confirms that this was his role in the illicit operation.

As for the assertion that there’s no “safer way to transport sensitive documents across the globe,” well, that’s just a foolish statement. There are many ways to securely transfer encrypted files across the Internet that are much safer than sending Glenn Greenwald’s partner on a round-the-world excursion with thousands of stolen classified documents.

From the sounds of it, Miranda couldn’t have been more blatant if he’d been walking through Heathrow holding a sign saying “I’m Glenn Greenwald’s main squeeze and I’m carrying classified British documents to give to him.”

Loved the opening paragraph.

David Miranda and I are debating whether or not to take off our shirts in the middle of a throbbing dance floor inside the heart of gay Rio de Janeiro. Silvery blue lights and men the size of sparrows swirl around us as we gauge the euphoria of the crowd. “It’s not that kind of party, honey!” Miranda shouts hoarsely over the Brazilian dance mix of Ke$ha’s “Die Young.”

This is from the Poitras hagiography written by one of her associates and printed by the New York Times.

He mentioned this while we were in a taxi heading back to his house. It was dark outside, the end of a long day. Greenwald asked Poitras, “Since it all began, have you had a non-N.S.A. day?”

“What’s that?” she replied.

“I think we need one,” Greenwald said. “Not that we’re going to take one.”

Poitras talked about getting back to yoga again. Greenwald said he was going to resume playing tennis regularly. “I’m willing to get old for this thing,” he said, “but I’m not willing to get fat.”

Yep. Just like MLK.

“Have you had a non-black day since we started this Martin?”

“No, John, but I think we need one. I’m willing to get arrested 40 times, but this being black stuff is getting old.”

Mr Johnson’s argument seems to depend on believing that encrypted documents are automatically classified documents.

It’s quite plausible that a courier could know a set of files are related to a topic, and to know the files are encrypted, without having to know any specifics of the contents, much less how those contents might be viewed by third parties.

Seems to be complaining about something, but not to clear as to what.

Snowden has reportedly spent all his savings, and is living under constant surveillance by the Russian FSB, probably in a dismal housing development somewhere around Moscow.

It’s obvious who came out with the best deal from this story.

103 Dark_Falcon  Fri, Nov 15, 2013 1:56:02pm

This post should actually worry us all:

Security researcher creates frag grenade with items purchased past security in airport (VIDEO)

Evan Booth with Terminal Cornucopia posted a YouTube video showing how to build a “FRAGGuccino” frag grenade out of common items that can be found in airport gift shops located past security checkpoints.

Booth began his project with one clear question in mind: “Can common items sold in airports after the security screening be used to build lethal weapons?”

The independent security researcher created a set of rules to abide by while conducting his experiment. The first was that all items must “be sourced inside the terminal after security” checkpoints. Second, only cash and a “small, travel-approved multitool can be carried into the terminal.” Finally, anything that would raise suspicion is off limits.

Booth has already considered the possibility that terrorists may see his tutorial, and has reported his findings to the Department of Homeland Security so they may be better equipped to deal with these types of potential threats, he said.

It’s also quite clear by now that there was never any attempt to screen these documents, or expose wrongdoing, despite Greenwald’s claim that Snowden had personally “vetted” the documents.

Snowden took the job with the specific intent of stealing as many classified documents as he could access, and he didn’t give a shit about exposing wrongdoing or screening anything. He burned his co-workers by conning them out of their passwords, then grabbed as much as he could get and fled, just like a bank robber.

This is not a hero.

Nope, not gonna finish this one either.

Glenn Greenwald scrunches over his laptop, the fizzing, glinty look in his eyes settling into something more staid and intense. It’s twilight in Gavea, the upscale enclave of Rio de Janeiro built alongside a hand-planted rainforest in the Zona Sul. The monkeys who routinely raise hell from the rubber trees that adorn Greenwald’s backyard have fled for the evening. A knot of ten dogs, mostly strays scooped off Rio’s traffic-gnarled streets, snore and grumble on the cream tiled floor. Without warning, Greenwald, who has the rat-tat-tat chattiness of Midnight Cowboy’s Ratso Rizzo crossing a Manhattan street corner, falls into a chilly silence. His small, fleshy hands flutter over the keyboard. Who knows what business is afoot inside his browser.

I need to forward this to Leo LaPorte and the gang at the TWiT podcast network, as well as Ars Technica.

I was thinking about this last night, actually. Part of me really wants to try to buy into the whole “Snowden has started a conversation” meme. But I keep circling back to the facts that:

1) Snowden basically did a spray-and-pray with all the docs he grabbed, as Charles points out.

2) Said documents are now property of China and Russia. I don’t consider them enemies as much as intense rivals, but they’d still love to fuck our shit up without hesitation.

3) Every fucking article Greenwald writes about this stuff mentions that the data is useless without warrants (another hat tip to Charles.) This is something Greenwald never mentions in spoken interviews, I’d wager.

Some woman do “swoon” for and cultivate intense friendships with gay men almost exclusively. They are non-threatening as far as pressuring the woman for physical intimacy but still provide male friendship/companionship.

The NSA is a spy agency. Spy agencies spy on other countries. Glenn Greenwald claimed this was about domestic spying and he turned up nothing. NOTHING. That is what’s called “lying”; the “overhyping” is because he made it look like this big breaking news story and throws a hissy fit every time someone refuses to take him seriously.

We don’t have serious political riots here, we have high-end sit-ins near the Starbucks, and occasionally 20 motorcycles will attack a minivan.

Sounds more likely that we’ve, you and I that is, have decided to belief in different lines of crap. In the long run, hubris will prove to have been the NSA’s Achilles heel. Thanks in part to documents released by way of Snowden and Greenwald, it is plainly obvious that the NSA has exceeded their mandate, and the boundaries of US law, in every conceivable fashion, apparently on the, popular among school children, theory that if you don’t get caught then you’ve done nothing wrong. Trouble with that theory is they got caught.

re: #144 Snertly

Lying about what? NSA’s unparalleled hubris in surveilling the world or their idiotic belief that they’d never be found out?

Where were you during the debates about the Patriot Act or the FISA courts, during the previous revelations that some telecommunications companies were cooperating with government surveillance programs without warrants under President Bush? Were you sleeping under a rock?

These are not “revelations” to anyone who isn’t living inside some personal dreamworld bubble. Anyone who has been paying attention for the last 12 years not only suspected that this kind of monitoring was going on, they knew it was for a fact because of the governmental debates about the constitutional limits and rules of the FISA courts!

Maybe you didn’t know that this was happening, maybe many people still didn’t, but that would be because you and those others never attempted to educate yourself on the issue. It also means that you ignored the hundreds of articles regarding it that were published since 2007 when the FISA court’s constitutionality became an issue.

Don’t accuse all of us for being ignorant about an issue simply because you were not aware of it. :p

Overhyping is a peculiar charge in that it accuses someone of gather too much attention. Could be bad I supposed, depending on where one thinks a surfeit of attention in one place is causing a deficit in another, but not a capital offense.

It is “over-hyping” because as stated above anyone who has been paying attention has known since at least 2007 (if not well before) that the surveillance rules post 9-11 had been greatly expanded.

Your like Captain Renault walking into “Ricks” and pronouncing himself to be shocked, shocked, to find out that there was gambling going on in there. Your announcement and feigned outrage simply cause the people who have known about this all along to yawn and scratch their heads in bewilderment about your clueless attitude.

Having the technical capability to intercept communications involving US citizens.

You know what would have been an absolutely amazing story? If the NSA had managed to develop the capability to collect information on non-citizens that absolutely could not be applied in any way at all to citizens. That it was technically impossible to do so.

This whole thing started as “THE NSA IS SPYING ON US CITIZENS” and it turned out that no, it was that the capability of doing so exists - because either you can spy on everyone or you spy on no one. That’s why there are restrictions on it as it applies to US citizens.

Solution May Be Near for Iran Nuclear Deal, U.S. Official Says

A senior Obama administration official said on Friday that a solution could be found for one of the major stumbling blocks to an agreement that would freeze Iran’s nuclear program, and that the accord might be achieved next week.

“For the first time in nearly a decade,” the official said, “we are getting close to a first step that would stop the Iranian nuclear program from advancing and roll it back in key areas.”

Talks between six world powers and Iran are scheduled to resume in Geneva on Wednesday. Western diplomats hope to complete an accord then that would halt Iran’s nuclear efforts for six months while negotiators pursue a more comprehensive agreement that would ensure that Tehran’s program is solely for civilian purposes.

I’ll skip on the linking it back to Greenwald specifically because footnoting comments is a lotta work, and I don’t see anyone else here at that level. I think it’s undeniable that Snowden’s disclosures have fueled an important and much needed examination of the topic.

Further, by admission of Clapper and Alexander, the NSA has repeatedly exceeding specified mission boundaries, (which could be called a mandate and the NSA probably has more than one) as well as US law. You can’t call data collection accidental when you have a plan for storing the data.

Also, it’s a pretty good indicator when the fellow who wrote the FISA law has said that the NSA violated what he considered to be the boundaries set in the FISA law to limit the scope of such surveillance.

As for crickets, they often have better things to do than checking how firmly you’ve knotted your blindfold.

Money quote from Babylon 5, security chief Garibaldi:

The translator says this is either a floor wax or an aphrodisiac. [To alien seller] If this leaves a waxy yellow buildup on anything, I’m coming back!

“Snowden is where we start
Four thousand miles and poles apart
Where derps collide and gays are dark

You have my thumb drive
You can have my name
And you’ll always have my GIFs….”

Let the Snowden fall
When he crumbles
I will stand tall, and face it all, whatever
On Snowden
On Snowden

Where he goes, I go,
What he leaks, I leak,
I know I’ll never be me,
Without the insanity,
of his dudebro heart,
Keeping my drive from harm
Put his drive in my drive and and we’ll stand…

Let the Snowden fall … [etc.]

I guess “Nobody Puts Baby in a Corner”? In wanting be known as something other than just Glenn Greenwald’s plucky and unwitting life partner, Miranda decides to spill all the dirt. So he goes from clueless
to a criminal.

I just finished reading through the whole interview. Man, that cat is lucky he’s not rotting in jail, he just admitted to committing an act of espionage and aiding and abetting in theft. Whatever you feel about the ‘vast and pernicious security state within the US and Britian’, smuggling stolen, classified documents across the globe is a crime. So, you shouldn’t be shocked that British law enforcement might detain you.

But, having this cat admit to being a willing mule for Team WikiLeaks will not make the true believers question the integrity of Greenwald. If anything, it only reinforces the ‘Three Days of the Condor’ plotline that only exists in their heads.
