Posted it below, but I’ll repeat it here: My new favorite police officer.
And for all the shit he’s gotten, Gov. Nixon seems to have played this well.
Edit: “played” may be a little too light a word for this, but it does seem like Nixon called this right by putting MHP in charge.
5 | Targetpractice Aug 14, 2014 7:35:02pm |
Amazing what change can happen in 24 hours when a governor gets off his ass and takes a hand in calming things down. A day ago, we had an asshole police chief telling the press that his officers were showing “restraint” while reports came in of people being gassed and reporters being roughed up and arrested. Now we have a captain who is walking amongst the protestors, talking with them and listening to them, and even showing solidarity with them.
I shudder to think of where things would be right now had Nixon not stepped in and made a very necessary change in command.

Fully expect that this will put the RWNJ’s in to full-hate-spew mode. Not sure exactly WHAT they will find objectionable, but I’m sure it will be something. Funny thing is, over at Freeper Land you couldn’t tell if they hated the cops or the protesters more. I think they ended up hating the protesters more, cuz of the melanin thing.

And that’s even as there’s no violence tonight in Ferguson, and other demonstrations have essentially been peaceful (even in NYC as far as I can tell). That’s a far cry from just 24 hours ago when the heavy handed police tactics included arrests of reporters doing their jobs reporting on events from inside a McDonalds and gassing a tv crew.

They’ve spent days with the “rioting and looting” bit, but now that that’s coming to an end, it’s time to get back to the “Brown was a thug!” business. After all, we can’t jump to conclusions and must wait until we have all the facts…

Lawrence O’Donnell has an eyewitness on right now. She says she pulled up as the altercation was in progress, Brown was outside the cop car trying to pull away as the cop tried to pull him in through the window. One shot was fired inside the car, then Brown got free and started to run away. The cop exited and ran after Brown, firing while running. Reportedly he missed Brown with the first shots, then she saw Michael jerk and stop running, turn around and put his hands up. Witness then says the cop advanced and fired several more shots, only stopping after Brown dropped to the ground.

New witness echoes what earlier witness said of Brown shooting. No fight for gun. First shot fired from inside car. Others as back turned.— Trymaine Lee (@trymainelee) August 15, 2014
But still the right wing echo chamber thinks that Brown must have been up to no good, had a rap sheet (that includes pre-birth (pre-conception at that), and that the community from which he came from is also full of no one but looters and Black Panthers.
It’s madness. And it has to stop.

Guaranteed that all of the hard forensics evidence (aside from the body, of course, but who knows if the Ferguson cops, with the help of the coroner, have tried to cover their tracks there too) have been disappeared by now.

#tbt My letter to the Rocky Mountain News editor published when I was in high school. I think I made a difference. pic.twitter.com/FYBU2i7dPJ— Charlie Vogel (@teleskiguy) August 15, 2014
I started reading the Rocky Mountain News when I was a boy. It was the first newspaper I started reading daily. When I was a teenager, I knew that the Rocky was superior to that stupid broadsheet The Denver Post (Rocky published tabloid style) which still publishes today (and took some of Rocky’s talent after the Rocky folded).
I really miss the Rocky Mountain News. I wept the day I found out that it went out of business, the first newspaper in Colorado, founded in 1859, before Colorado even became a state.
At least I got to contribute to the Rocky. And now? Cannabis is 100% legal in the state of Colorado.

I’m so amazed and impressed by Capt. Johnson.
He gets handed the biggest pile of shit assignment from people who actively tried to make it worse or ignore it (See the Governor). An assignment he knows is being watched by the world and if it turn out bad it makes history.
Well, I think he did make history tonight, well done.
Quit giving Nixon shit. How do you know he was “ignoring” the situation? For someone who was “ignoring” it, he sure came up with an excellent solution pretty damn fast. Maybe because the wheels were turning where you couldn’t see them. Sorry you didn’t get the instant gratification you wanted. Nixon is a decent man and a credit to Missouri. Sometimes it seems like he’s the only thing preventing our crazy Republican legislature from turning us into another Kansas. Give the man a damn break.

Amnesty International Sends Human Rights Delegation to Ferguson, Missouri
(FERGUSON, MO) - Today, Amnesty International USA announced that it has sent human rights delegation to Ferguson, MO to observe police and protester activity, gather testimony, seek meetings with officials and offer support to the community. The 12-person delegation also includes organizers who will train local activists on methods of non-violent protest.
“Law enforcement, from the FBI to state and local police, are obligated to respect and uphold the human rights of our communities. The U.S. cannot continue to allow those obligated and duty-bound to protect to become those who their community fears most,” said Amnesty International USA’s executive director, Steven W. Hawkins.

So is there a place to get a good summary of this Michael Brown situation?
As far as I can tell, it was some blatantly racist cops basically gunning down an unarmed teenager in front of multiple witnesses, the cops going into circle-the-wagons coverup mode, and it turning out that they are so far out of touch they felt they could react to the resultant protest + the media coverage like they were literally going to war?

Also the local officials are still stonewalling on releasing basic information, like the name of the officer who shot him and the autopsy results.
Kind of hard to check on the officers past history, service record and character when you don’t have the name. No one has any idea whether or not to put any faith in the officers version of events as they have been relayed so far.
They say they wont release the autopsy results until the toxicology panels are completed weeks from now. Possibly they just don’t want to admit how many times he was shot and where he was struck (back?). I don’t understand how the toxicology report is even relevant really. Will it suddenly make the (multiple) shooting justified if it turns out he has THC or cocaine or alcohol in his system?
Although I suppose that probably would help them with rightwing opinion since a lot of them are already trying to paint him as a “thug” who deserved whatever happened. :(
167 | Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light) Aug 15, 2014 3:16:22am |
I assume the police in Ferguson were hoping that it would just blow over like all the other incidences of excessive force, and when it didn’t they over-reacted with - you guessed it - excessive force against the protesters.
When it degenerated into looting, the RW view was that the police shooting was an isolated incident but rioting and looting are all endemic to the black community.

One of the good things about this Michael Brown situation, and I hate to even use that phrase, is that the majority of the country is waking up to the fact that we have basically let Halliburton and the Military Industrial complex militarize our country’s police forces in the name of wingnut welfare. Maybe now it’ll stop — but I doubt it.
That is, of course, presuming that any Mainstream Media coverage of that fact continues after next week. Lots, LOTS of money being spent on this kit, and I can’t imagine they like the idea of losing their gravy train to a bunch of mere “civilians.”

Fallon to CNN: Fear Not, Ferguson Police Only Arrest Real Journalists
In light of Ferguson police infamously arresting two journalists on Wednesday evening during ongoing protests, Jimmy Fallon took the opportunity to jab at CNN.
“So everyone’s talking about what’s going on in Ferguson, Missouri,” he began. “It’s a pretty tense situation that just keeps getting worse. The police have actually just started arresting journalists. This is true.”
And the punchline: “But when the cops saw the crew from CNN, they were like, ‘No, you guys are fine.’”

I also remember one prof assigning us a packet of a dozen case studies in an envelope. That envelope would have cost almost $200 on its own. Simple research showed that most of those cases were available online for free or for just a few bucks. There were only a few that we’d have to buy. Fancy that. After a change in police command structure yesterday by Gov. Nixon, who put the Highway Patrol in charge, there was no violence in Ferguson relating to the protests, it was civil, and there were no arrests made.
Ferguson so far: Officer name release expected shortly http://t.co/I74XzadjTw Nixon: 0 arrests overnight http://t.co/fL2Tdr4CNR— Jedd Rosche (@jeddrosche) August 15, 2014
How’d that happen? Simple. The police deescalated by removing the group of officers that initiated the heavy handed tactics - the STL county police. With that one simple act, the situation calmed down significantly. The MO Highway Patrol chief, Capt. Johnson marched with protesters. Officers under his command marched with protesters. Ferguson cops marched and mingled with protesters.
It is more than a night and day change. It shows just how the county police escalated the situation to a violent degree. The changes don’t eliminate the problems for the town or law enforcement. There are still people aggrieved and angered by the death of Michael Brown, and there’s a need for Ferguson police to be more forthcoming with details about his death at the hands of a Ferguson cop.
This situation highlights the need for police departments to review all of their procedures regarding officer-involved shootings and excessive force cases. Departments should be more forthcoming about the details to the public. Identify the officers involved, etc.
It’s a more difficult question as who should investigate the cops who are involved in these situations. Not every department is large enough to have an internal affairs division or there’s not enough transparency to allow that self-investigation to occur. So, states and localities have to figure out a consistent method to handle these cases. It may mean that any case involving an officer-involved death automatically gets handled by the State Police (or if the state police is the agency involved, another designated agency within the jurisdiction). Prosecutors would come from the state AG office to handle.
But the process must be transparent. It’s the least we should expect and demand of law enforcement. They do a tremendously difficult job and the methodology of treating these cases shouldn’t be done on an ad hoc basis either. They deserve to know exactly how every single case will be handled.
It also minimizes the politicization of the cases by prosecutors, law enforcement, and politicians (and in some cases, there’s overlap since some law enforcement and legal positions are elected like county sheriffs, some prosecutors, attorneys general, etc.)
These are sensible measures, and states and localities should work to do this as soon as possible. It shouldn’t take deaths, protests, and riots, to focus attention on this longstanding problem. And we don’t even know the true scope of the problem since there’s no uniform statistics to count on. We need states and localities to require reporting all excessive force cases, along with statistics about officer-involved shootings and deaths while in police custody. The statistics can include details about those deaths occurring where the deceased had weapons in possession, were in the midst of committing crimes, etc., to separate those that are legitimate use of force incidents from those that appear to be excessive force instances (as appears to be the case in Ferguson).
But I get the sense that as the situation settles down in Ferguson, everyone will lose attention on this and the status quo will persist.

More on the underlying problems with the Ferguson PD.
#Ferguson police charged a man with bleeding on their uniforms after beating him. Turns out he was the wrong guy. http://t.co/LTaozUawxS— Andrew Becker (@ABeckerCIR) August 15, 2014
Police in Ferguson, Missouri, once charged a man with destruction of property for bleeding on their uniforms while four of them allegedly beat him.
“On and/or about the 20th day of Sept. 20, 2009 at or near 222 S. Florissant within the corporate limits of Ferguson, Missouri, the above named defendant did then and there unlawfully commit the offense of ‘property damage’ to wit did transfer blood to the uniform,” reads the charge sheet.
The address is the headquarters of the Ferguson Police Department, where a 52-year-old welder named Henry Davis was taken in the predawn hours on that date. He had been arrested for an outstanding warrant that proved to actually be for another man of the same surname, but a different middle name and Social Security number.
“I said, ‘I told you guys it wasn’t me,’” Davis later testified.
He recalled the booking officer saying, “We have a problem.”
The booking officer had no other reason to hold Davis, who ended up in Ferguson only because he missed the exit for St. Charles and then pulled off the highway because the rain was so heavy he could not see to drive. The cop who had pulled up behind him must have run his license plate and assumed he was that other Henry Davis. Davis said the cop approached his vehicle, grabbed his cellphone from his hand, cuffed him and placed him in the back seat of the patrol car, without a word of explanation.
But the booking officer was not ready just to let Davis go, and proceeded to escort him to a one-man cell that already had a man in it asleep on the lone bunk. Davis says that he asked the officer if he could at least have one of the sleeping mats that were stacked nearby.
“He said I wasn’t getting one,” Davis said.
Davis balked at being a second man in a one-man cell.
It went downhill from there, and multiple officers were called in to move Davis to a cell. He was bloodied up in the incident, and was then charged with dirtying the police officers’ uniforms with his blood spilled over refusing to be in a cell meant for one person.
The civil suit went into the bizarre - as the officer who wrote up the report claimed that no blood was spilled, other officers testified that their uniforms weren’t dirty.
The bottom line? The Department was dirty, and they have serious operational issues at all levels.

Case in point — law classes. For our business law class in grad school we were assigned this book. At that point, the 11th Edition was the most current, so the first syllabus we got asked for it. Then over the summer they released the 12th Edition, so the syllabus changed.
The only substantive difference between the 11th and 12th Editions were some of the cases used as examples. All the relevant information was the same. Most people just bought or rented used versions of the 11th since it was cheaper. Only a handful rented or bought new copies of the 12th. The prof ended up using the cases in the book as jumping off points into other discussions rather than talking about them specifically to ease the confusion.

I was told they’re expecting by the middle of September, it’ll probably be even lower, perhaps down to 9 Kč/liter. That puts it at about $2.00/gallon.

re: #251 Timothy Watson
One of my favorite professors when working on my undergrad assign us four books that available as mass-market paperbacks plus he had a gallery of one he posted on Blackboard.
When I was working in a university’s business school library back in the mid 1980s they had photocopies of papers or articles and books needed for classes put on the reserved books shelves behind the front desk. In order to get access to one you had to turn over your ID to get the book or photocopy - and it couldn’t leave the library.
So one summer day I’m working the front desk while one of the full-time librarians is on her lunch break. A professor turns up and wants one of the reserved books. Not to check it out temporarily, she wants to take it for some undisclosed purpose.
And I wouldn’t give it to her.
About 2-3 minutes into a professor getting heated up over some dorky undergraduate clerk not bowing to her whim the librarian on lunch break turns up and just tells me to go shelf books. (She had been eating lunch sitting at a table back behind the book shelves and had heard the entire exchange.)
I never found out how things worked out. I do know that the book was still there later that afternoon and there were no repercussions regarding my employment there.
I knew from working on weekends that the book in question was checked out a lot by grad students doing class work. And I was also aware that books being “checked out” by professors often meant that they disappeared down a black hole never to be seen again. We had a file of those books, and some had been gone for over six years. And when I got tasked later that summer with sorting out some boxes put in storage by professors a few turned up.

Like much else that has come out of the Department, take any claims they make about Brown with a grain of salt. They have an institutional need to protect their own, and that includes denigrating Brown by linking him to a crime, even though there’s no support for that statement.
Also, it would appear that by doing so, they’re policing based on skin color. The strong arm robbers were black, and here are two black guys, so they must be the same two. Racial profiling, which goes back to earlier statistics showing that blacks are disproportionately stopped by Ferguson PD, even though whites have a higher contraband hit rate.

I’m watching St.Louis Fox live stream and the reporter just pointed out what I was thinking. The original report was the officer asked Brown to get out of the street and it escalated to Brown trying to get the officers gun. Now the report is that Brown was part of a store robbery and the officer was looking for a suspect that was dressed as Brown was. Interesting to listen to reporters hashing out the inconsistencies and complaining about the Police chief babbling and leaving without clarifying anything.

And all of them are missing the goddamn point.
If the police story is that a robbery took place nearby and the cop thought Brown was the suspect, that still doesn’t justify the cop emptying his gun into Brown. Ever. It basically brings up all the issues of racial profiling that lawhawk mentioned, and it turns this tragedy into a case of mistaken identity and a cop using lethal force when he had no reason to do so.
This cop shot first and asked questions later, and a kid died for it. Here’s a kid who was, by all accounts a good kid that was working hard to get out and make something positive out of his life and he was murdered by a trigger happy cop who thought he’d broken the law.

I read that report as claiming he took several packages of cigars (Swishers) without paying.
But this is a second report, written after the original report and after the death of Brown.
What does the original report state?
It is possible that Brown was involved in this robbery, but the footage is inconclusive as to what happened. It does appear to be Brown. We don’t know what was or wasn’t paid for because part of the events was obstructed from the camera angles provided.
But none of this detracts from the excessive force used by the cop in killing Brown.

No, the shooting happened at 12:01 pm., according to what Chief Jackson said at the presser this morning.
Then there’s a discrepancy.
A witness to the police killing of 18-year-old Mike Brown over the weekend in Ferguson, Missouri, will meet shortly with the FBI, his lawyer says. Dorian Johnson’s lawyer told MSNBC that he was initially refused an interview by police even though he was walking with Brown when the fatal shooting occurred. Johnson was walking with Brown on Saturday afternoon when the fatal shooting occurred in the mostly black St. Louis suburb of Ferguson. In an interview with St. Louis’ KSDK, Johnson said police shot his friend “like an animal” as he held his hands in the air. He also told the station that Brown never attempted to take the officer’s weapon.
“It was around 1:40, two o’clock. We were walking down the street, empty street. We were just walking down, minding our business. We’re both headed home, and the officer’s approaching us, and as he pulled up on the side of us, he didn’t say ‘freeze,’ ‘halt,’ or nothing like we were committing a crime. He said, ‘Get the f—- on the sidewalk!’ I told the officer we were not but a minute away from the destination,” Johnson said.

Then there’s a discrepancy.
From Washington Post article of this morning’s presser:
Jackson provided few other details about Wilson at the news conference and did not take any questions. He said that Wilson had been responding to a call shortly before noon on Saturday when there was a 911 call regarding a “strong-arm robbery” at a convenience store.
A description of a possible suspect was given over the radio, saying this person was walking toward the QuickTrip convenience store in Ferguson. An incident report handed out by police on Friday labeled Brown as a suspect in the convenience store robbery, which involved the theft of some Swisher Sweets cigars.
Wilson left the call he had been responding to and encountered Brown on Canfield Drive at 12:01 p.m., Jackson said.
So, yes, there is a discrepancy.

There are lots of discrepancies in the time line and facts proffered by the Ferguson PD. Where are the packages of Swishers that were allegedly stolen. If they weren’t on Brown, were they in Johnson’s possession (the friend who witnessed events).
And if two people indeed stole the Swishers from the store, why wasn’t Johnson put into custody on suspicion of robbery.
Why did the cop not initiate the stop on suspicion of robbery and instead questioned the duo over walking in the street.
Why would Brown reach into the vehicle to grab a gun?
Why did the officer fire after Brown was already down and bleeding out?
And why did the Ferguson PD not signal that there was a convenience store robbery and that Brown was a suspect before today? That would have bolstered their claim that this was a justifiable stop (not the excessive force, but we’ve got multiple issues on proper law enforcement here).
Instead, we’ve got a questionable timeline, a police report that appears to have been a second version of events at the convenience store, and still omits key details from the day of the shooting.
Oh, and why should we trust the police reports coming out of Ferguson when they’ve previously been implicated in trumping up nonsensical charges and/or engaging in perjury over arrests in the past.

This isn’t about truth, this is Ferguson PD poisoning the well by producing “facts” to get them into the right wing echo chamber. When (technically “if” but let’s be honest: if the FPD’s story was truthful it would have already emerged) the “facts” are debunked they will already be in the echo chamber and beyond correction where they will live forever, shutting down this issue.
EDIT: I suspect this is being done, ultimately, because there has been some small reaction in the portion of the right-glibertarian movement not wholly given over to propertarianism. This “lets” the right-glibs forget about it.

And even on those facts, there’s plenty to dispute and question - because much of the events is obscured from view of the camera.

You can also look at renting books, instead of buying them. The whole textbook industry is a mess, where they’ll frequently issue new editions even though the information is the substantially the same as prior editions. It’s one thing to have new editions of organic chem or biology to address new information, but this happens across all disciplines.
Yup. I sold college textbooks in another life and calling the industry a “mess” is being kind, Lawhawk. I call it a racket. The reason new editions are issued is so that students will be forced to buy the new editions (in the past publishers included a “bundle” of online access card or study guide to force the purchase of the new book). I could see the industry was in trouble in 2002.

Wow, I’m genuinely impressed that Erickson actually admitted what we all know to be true that the chances of a white kid being shot by the police in the same situation as Brown’s aren’t nearly as high for a black kid. I’m relieved that Limbaugh hasn’t entered his contribution to the conversation yesterday given his nasty comments about Robin Williams.

From that police report, the Exceptionally Cleared bit should be of great interest.
Snagged this from answers.com… and other links seem to all say something similar:
James Dawe
Police and Law Enforcement Supervisor
A police report that is “exceptionally cleared” means that the reported offense was ‘solved’ by means which did not include an arrest and prosecution of the perpetrator. In other words, the crime was solved - we know who did it - but no arrest was able to have been made. A perfect example of this would be the solution of one (or more) crimes by means of a “deathbed confession.” Another, probably more common example, is the clearance of a string of offenses committed by an individual, by an admission of their culpability, in exchange for a plea bargain offered by the prosecution.

St.Louis Fox2now reporter said the DVD was still warm and there was a shortage of press packets despite knowing how many were in the press. I assume they started looking at footage late Saturday and this morning found something they could reuse as Brown and a friend causing problems. They would have had more packets ready and wouldn’t have contradicted themselves if it were simply a robbery. When Fox2now was live/raw feed earlier the reporters and crew were trying to read the copies of the reports and commenting on how much of it was redacted. They were also talking about reports of 3 people involved in the altercation/robbery at the redacted store and why haven’t they looked for the other two involved. And was a package of swishers or a box of packages were taken as it wasn’t clear or contradicted in the report. A state trooper actually came up and asked if he could see what was in the press packet and did a brief interview. Blue uniform I assume is MO State Trouper.

I also sold college textbooks in a previous lifetime and I’m so glad I got out. I should note that the issue with these non-reusable textbooks goes back into the 1980s. Publishers keep coming up with new and different ways to make the books one use only. Back in the day, it was the “special supplement only for Spring 198X semester at the University of Texas” that was shrink-wrapped with the books.

Dallas researchers out to scientifically prove biblical version of creation
Young-earth creationists like those at ICR argue that everything in the known universe began 6,000 to 10,000 years ago, a numeric range they calculate using the genealogy of the Bible — Adam lived 930 years and begat a son named Seth, who lived 105 years and begat Enos, and so on.
“Our attempt is to demonstrate that the Bible is accurate, not just religiously authoritative,” said Henry Morris III, CEO of the nonprofit with a 49-person payroll and an annual budget in the $7 million range.
“The rationale behind it is this: If God really does exist, he shouldn’t be lying to us,” he said. “And if he’s lying to us right off the bat in the book of Genesis, we’ve got some real problems.”

I’ve not had a chance to read the report yet. Is there any indication of violence involved in this petty theft? Because that seems to be the only excuse I can think of to throw this out there, that Brown had proven violent enough to attack a cop.
Which appears to be working since at least one co-worker in the lunch room (where CNN is on) believes that the cop was in fear for his life and thus justified in gunning Michael Brown down.

So you’ve just committed petty theft and are walking home. A cop car shows up and the cop inside orders you to get off the street and onto the sidewalk.
Do you:
A) Obey and do so, hoping that will make the cop go away.
B) Run for it in the hope that the time it takes the cop to get out of his vehicle to give chase will allow you to give him the slip.
C) March up to his vehicle and try to steal his gun.

Important takeaway from that article, for folks who don’t want to read the whole thing: for the officer’s first two years on the force, the procedure for any non-fatal use-of-force reports did not involve making a copy to put with the officer’s personnel file - and the officer himself got to write up the report.

On Friday, police finally identified the officer as Darren Wilson, who is said to have no disciplinary record, as such records are kept in Ferguson. We already know that he started out at a time when it was accepted for a Ferguson cop to charge somebody with property damage for bleeding on his uniform and later saying there was no blood on him at all.

Death penalty for shoplifting? Such things have been tried before. This is a story I have heard several times during visits to Guatemala.
In the 1930s, Guatemala was run by the eccentric General Jorge Ubico, who was obsessed with Napoleon Bonaparte and thought he resembled his idol, even though Ubico himself was 6’2” and quite fat. He was a radio engineer and ran his own lavishly equipped ham operation with a worldwide following, and also had a fleet of motorcycles.
In 1936, a visiting American reporter called Guatemala City a pigsty and the dirtiest town he had ever been in. Ubico was incensed, but had to admit there was substance to the allegation. He resolved to clean the place up. By 1941, when John Gunther arrived to gather material for his classic Inside Latin America, there had been an amazing transformation. Gunther said Guatemala City was one the cleanest cities he had seen anywhere in the world, spotless and well organized. He soon discovered the reason: Ubico had stationed a soldier or policeman at every intersection, with a rifle and orders to shoot anyone who threw trash on the road or failed to clean up after their animals. When asked about this, Ubico (who spoke fluent English and liked American slang) boasted, “Yeah, we only had to shoot 3 or 4 litterbugs before the rest got the message.” Ubico was eventually removed in a coup led by junior officers and intellectuals who were fed up with his heavy handed rule and general craziness. He died in exile in New Orleans in 1946.

They’ve been in CYA mode since the shooting and everything they’ve done has been towards the goal of avoiding any liability in a future lawsuit. On the same day they released the cop’s name (but no photo), they also throw out more chaff by releasing a heavily redacted report on a “robbery” that Brown allegedly engaged in to again shift the focus of discussion from their pathetically dishonest tactics to the circumstances of that “robbery.”

Okay, the Post Dispatch identified the store involved, and I included it in my post, in part because of clarity when referring to various convenience stores in the area.
The reporting also indicates that the police aren’t charging Dorian Johnson with a crime, even though he’s with Brown at the time of the alleged crime and even though he appears to have received items from Brown. That strikes me as odd, if not inconsistent.
The police department has been more interested in smearing Brown’s actions than they are in revealing their own. That’s quite telling. This is a Department that is under a microscope, and each time they stall and delay, the microscope becomes a scanning electron microscope, and then a tunneling x-ray microscope, where every bit of malfeasance will come to light.
What we know so far is that the department engages in racial profiling as per AG statistics. We know that they’ve lied and possibly commited perjury in at least one major false arrest case. Excessive force cases were improperly handled for years.
But the police response is to try and spin this to blame the victim of their own excessive violence.

Still no autopsy, but since body has been released to family they should know how many shots he took and where on his body.
If shot in the back they could argue he was fleeing. But if they argue Michael Brown was trying to wrestle the gun from the cop then that makes that argument pretty difficult.

579 | First As Tragedy, Then As Farce Aug 15, 2014 11:03:20am |
Capt. Donnie Lang of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office said a security alarm sounded at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Winchester home of Easton McDonald, a sergeant with the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office. He said McDonald, responding to the alarm, saw the dark shape of a person advancing through the garage door and fired.
“He figured someone had broken into the garage, and his family was upstairs asleep,” Lang said.
Armed with his privately owned gun — not his service weapon — McDonald fired, Lang said.
“Then he hears her voice and recognizes that it’s his daughter,” he said.
As a wee lad growing up around guns, I was taught four non-negotiable rules:
1) All guns are always loaded.
2) Never allow the gun to point at anything you don’t wish to shoot.
3) Know your target and what lies beyond it.
4) Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
I guess those aren’t fashionable these days. Of course, back then it was generally considered silly to even think about openly carrying a gun around in public like a huge piece of stupid bling jewelry.
