We need a term that encompasses obstinate and aggressive ignorance. Because I don’t think a good chunk of the respondents are answering honestly, they know the correct answer but they reject it. It’s what I previously called the lie as a shibboleth. These GOP primary votes know their answers are full of shit, but they feel they can identify themselves from the other by repeating it with a straight face. And the sad thing is they repeat it so often that they start to believe it reflexively via some surface, mimetic portion of their brain though deeper down they know what they’re saying is complete horse shit.
It’s a kind of consensual mass brainwashing, a sociological pathology of weak minds who for whatever reason find themselves unwilling or unable to publicly reject this totally fantastical Party zeitgeist.
“It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever,” until it turns the clock back as much as it can.

The Hawaiian government knew someone would take it over and curried favor with the UK, hoping for the best deal. That’s why the Union Jack is part of the state flag.

Fairly typical of the era. In 1939, the Chinese had been locked in a very viscous war with the Japanese since (officially) 1937 but years before that as well. All were liable for conscription and the C96 pistol with shoulder stock was a very popular carbine. If it is unfamiliar, well, that’s because western propaganda, er, “movies” tended to ignore them and their very desperate fights (by BOTH the Nationalists and Communists) against the fascists of Japan unless we could wrap our good white folks around the fight.
The The 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force in 1941-1942, (aka The Flying Tigers) for the most famous example of us not caring unless white lives were at stake. Note: Claire Chennault was not guilty of this.
The John Birch scum would later parlay that same disinterest into their later assault on power.

So I’m running out for another museum crawl, but I have a conundrum for you all before I go…
Since Saturday evening, every time I try to access the LGF main page on my Android phone, I get taken to a site called “three” in the UK that says I’ve exhausted my credit and need to top up. That I should have exhausted my credit with them is no surprise, since I’ve never had dealings with them — they seem to be dealers in SIM cards for travelers.
It’s only a problem with the main page, not the articles, and only on my phone.
The only thing I can think of to do is clear out my history, but I’m loath to do that if it won’t solve the problem. Does anyone have any idea whether that will do it? Or WTF is going on here?

re: #32 Decatur Deb
Phishing malware?
Could be, but the site seems reputable — and anyway, what I really want to know is why typing “littlegreenfootballs.com” now takes me to that site, and so does clicking on “front page” from any article page. Or rather, how to stop it — I don’t much care why it’s happening if I can make it not happen.
re: #32 Decatur Deb
Phishing malware?
That sounds fishy (phishy?) but it might just be a redirecting advertisement. I myself have had clicking on things redirect to an odd advertisement page (Google Chrome on Win 10). The page still loads in a new window, but the original tab is redirected to a blank ad page.
It’s been my experience that a lot of redirecting ads, an absolute ton of them, are targeting Android and iOS because the average webdesigner doesn’t test on mobile so they can get away with doing it for significantly longer.
If a bad person apparently exposes a wrongdoing by a person you think is good, the worst thing to do is circle the wagons.
This happened over the weekend in my area:
Vintage WWII ship passes by Maysville en route to Pittsburgh
According to lstmemorial.org, a website dedicated to the LST 325, the 73-year-old ship set sail on the Ohio River, from Evansville, Ind., Thursday en route to Pittsburgh, Pa., with an estimated arrival date in Pittsburgh of Sept. 1.
snip
The ship will dock at the North Shore Riverfront Park adjacent to Heinz Field, and be open for tours from Sept. 2-8. It will set sail for Cincinnati on Sept. 9 with an arrival date of Sept. 11. The ship will be open for tours in Cincinnati from Sept. 12-16. On Sept. 17, the ship will depart Cincinnati to return to Evansville.
The ship is an amphibious vessel that was designed to land battle ready tanks, troops and supplies on enemy shores, according to lstmemorial.org.
According to the website, The USS LST 325 participated in several operations during World War II, including D-Day in Normandy, Operation HUSKY, and the invasion of Sicily and is now the last fully-operational World War II LST.
“This particular LST was originally known as LST-325 during the Second World War, USNS LST-325 during its arctic operations in the 1950’s, and later L-144 (A/G Syros) while it was in the service of the Greek Navy,” the website says.

If she goes to jail, a temporary appointment can be made (most likely one of the deputy clerks—one of which is her son).

She IS looking rather Westboro Baptist today.
It seems that the anti-gay right wing extremists take on the 1A is completely divorced from reality. They think that it gives them the right to impose their religious views on everyone else as Davis is doing here.
That’s precisely the way that the 1A is not supposed to work. It’s supposed to prevent a person from using government to impose their religious views on everyone else.
You are entitled to your own religious views, but you cannot impose them on anyone else as part of a government policy - the law is supposed to be neutral on its face.
The religious objections to Davis doing her damned job in marrying couples who are of the same sex reeks of the same kind of logic that right wingers were pushing decades ago when couples sought to marry someone of a different color (intermarriage - miscegenation). The logic failed then, and it fails now.
These people are using religion to further their hate. And it’s leading only to suffering.

The local authorities of the Catholic Church had refused him a public funeral, citing a rule of canon law that, unless they gave some signs of repentance before death, a public funeral must be refused to manifest sinners to whom it cannot be granted without public scandal of the faithful.[61][62] The society issued a statement on its website saying, “A Christian who was baptized and received the sacraments of confession and the Eucharist, no matter what his faults and sins were, to the extent that he dies reconciled with God and the church, has a right to the celebration of the holy Mass and a funeral.”
re: #124 Nyet
Gotta love the spin. The Pope doesn’t want to forgive these women. He only gave the power to the priests for mere one year to forgive them. At the same time he gave the absolution power to the SSPX priests, thus continuing his predecessor’s policy of coddling that nest of antisemites.
Agreed, But it still is a major thing just to mention absolve and abortion in any statement from a Catholic Pope.
I think we’ll be able to judge how big it is by the backlash or lack thereof.

Hi all, back from vacation to see something so idiotic from the right that my brain is hurting (must be a day that ends in “y”) about that great mountain in Alaska. Well, the only thing I remember from Palin’s incoherent resignation speech as AK governor was her reference to the mountain as Denali.
But to placate the right, I offer to name another mountain after a white man from Ohio. Stone Mountain in Georgia should be renamed “Mount Sherman”. I’d also add a statue of Billy Tecumseh on top, flipping off the traitors carved into the rock below him.
On a more serious note, it’s well past time to stop calling Mt Everest that name, and restore its local names (Sagarmatha in Nepalese or Chomolungma in Tibetan).
From a Catholic freeper:
Moreover, earlier in his pontificate, this Pope was pretty hard on priests. He seemed to be bashing them on a daily basis. This move to grant all priests in the world the faculty to lift the censure which results from procuring an abortion is a sign of his confidence in priests… for a change.
I take heart from this bold move

I love how it a Priest (a man) has the discretion to forgive what only (according to the Church) only God can forgive.
[Embedded content]
There’s a whole lot of breathless reporting on this. The trend to take that discretion from priests is a relatively recent side effect of the anti-abortion mania in the church. Killing, prenatal or otherwise, was not a matter for excommunication. Using the Holy Year “for now” is probably a way to tiptoe out of the corner the hierarchy has painted itself into.
(The church has always (i.e. from earliest doctrinal standardization) held that priests can bind or loosen via the sacrament formerly known as Penance.)

County Circuit Court clerk, according to the best of my skill and judgment, making the due entries and records of all orders, judgments, decrees, opinions and proceedings of the court, and carefully filing and preserving in my office all books and papers which come to my possession by virtue of my office; and that I will not knowingly or willingly commit any malfeasance of office, and will faithfully execute the duties of my office without favor, affection or partiality, so help me God.” The fact that the oath has been administered shall be entered on the record of the Circuit Court.

BULLSHIT! He can fish all he wants, but this fish ain’t bitin’!
Let me ask it this way.
Do you think he needed to say anything at all about abortion and being able to forgive if nothing has or is changing?
If he didn’t , then why did he?
I understand your’s and other’s position on Catholics and birth control and abortion. I agree. It is one of the many reasons I am not a practicing Catholic even after years of being steeped in it.
All I am saying is it is a big thing for the Pope to even come out and make the statement. To me that indicates he may well be putting a little crack in some long held thinking. If he is not, there was no reason to make the statement.
Anyway, primary sources are the best.
One of the serious problems of our time is clearly the changed relationship with respect to life. A widespread and insensitive mentality has led to the loss of the proper personal and social sensitivity to welcome new life. The tragedy of abortion is experienced by some with a superficial awareness, as if not realizing the extreme harm that such an act entails. Many others, on the other hand, although experiencing this moment as a defeat, believe that they have no other option. I think in particular of all the women who have resorted to abortion. I am well aware of the pressure that has led them to this decision. I know that it is an existential and moral ordeal. I have met so many women who bear in their heart the scar of this agonizing and painful decision. What has happened is profoundly unjust; yet only understanding the truth of it can enable one not to lose hope. The forgiveness of God cannot be denied to one who has repented, especially when that person approaches the Sacrament of Confession with a sincere heart in order to obtain reconciliation with the Father. For this reason too, I have decided, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, to concede to all priests for the Jubilee Year the discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it. May priests fulfil this great task by expressing words of genuine welcome combined with a reflection that explains the gravity of the sin committed, besides indicating a path of authentic conversion by which to obtain the true and generous forgiveness of the Father who renews all with his presence.
A final consideration concerns those faithful who for various reasons choose to attend churches officiated by priests of the Fraternity of St Pius X. This Jubilee Year of Mercy excludes no one. From various quarters, several Brother Bishops have told me of their good faith and sacramental practice, combined however with an uneasy situation from the pastoral standpoint. I trust that in the near future solutions may be found to recover full communion with the priests and superiors of the Fraternity. In the meantime, motivated by the need to respond to the good of these faithful, through my own disposition, I establish that those who during the Holy Year of Mercy approach these priests of the Fraternity of St Pius X to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation shall validly and licitly receive the absolution of their sins.

re: #233 De Kolta Chair
If you think that the American “Empire” is going to collapse because of gay marriage, or because we’re not on the gold standard, or some other BS, then we’re not much of an empire in the first place.
And I don’t think that we’re an empire so much as a hegemony. We’ve got a huge sphere of influence, either direct or indirect, and it goes beyond mere military force, though that plays into things as well.
But the GOP appears hellbent on undermining the hegemony by diverting resources to building walls on both borders, which would cost billions and then billions more to staff them. They want to cut taxes even further, destroy the safety net, and spend on military gear, while not paying those in our service a proper wage (and certainly not providing sufficient care to those who have separated from service either with decent wages, health care, etc.).
The CNN person presses Casey Davis and he was deliberately obtuse.

Still, because of how fundraising will likely result in Davis not paying anything out of pocket, jail would be the proper outcome here.

I wouldn’t say that the Isaac sacrifice story shows this. Quite the contrary, it praised the readiness to sacrifice one’s child merely on God’s command. That Isaac was not sacrificed was not the point of the story. And Jephthah’s daughter was.

I would assume it would be a daily fine that would continue as long as she refuses to do her job. If set high enough (I would like to see $10k per day), the fund raising may not be able to keep up with the fines after a couple of weeks, then Davis would be facing financial ruin.

Well, the key word here is “we” as used in your second sentence in the last paragraph.
I am not part of we. I am not a practicing member, therefore I have already determined there would be no change and walked away due to that and more.
It is a private club and if you are a member, you give up rights they do not grant. That to me is the church’s biggest issue and one that confused me. They have members that do not buy what they are selling. It is full up with all kinds of hypocrisy. How can that be good for anyone?
If anything I think the new Pope has a feel that is his biggest issue too.
Maybe you saw my comments as telling you what to do because you are interested in change in the church.
And interestingly, it is also the biggest issue with the politics of this country. We have a bunch of people that are hypocrites of our Constitution. And one of the big things driving this mess is…religion!

WALKER: Our system’s purely about freedom. It’s about giving people the freedom…We give patients as consumers the freedom to choose where they want to go or — frankly, part of our plan says if you want to pool together your resources as consumers, and pick your own plan, you can do that on your own
So all of us lizards could “pool together” our “resources” and pick our own plan. We aren’t related, don’t live in the same community, different ages, etc. Sounds like fun. And Freedom.

Pool together resources in a marketplace. Wait. That’s exactly what the ACA did - by creating a market that didn’t exist, relying on private/publicly owned insurers that offer their own products that comply with uniform national baseline rules.
Oh, he wants a return to the individual market, where rates were incredibly high and deterred people from seeking/obtaining insurance.
They also incentivize the wrong groups - by focusing on age, and not income level. By giving young no incentive to get insurance, your pool of insureds will skew to the old/infirm, and those more likely to use medical care. That would create the very death spiral that the right wing claimed would happen with the ACA - but hasn’t.
She should receive a huge fine. Not necessarily anything that ruins her, but something that stings.
She should fucking do her job and not waste anyone’s time and other resources.

re: #317 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse
The insurance across state lines sounds great, until you realize that it would be a race to the bottom. State with least amount of coverage protections would be idolized, while actual care and coverage would suffer - leaving people to carry ever greater health care costs.
It shifts the health care burden entirely on to the person.

That point makes it clear that Walker knows exactly zed point fuck about health insurance. The insurers establish provider networks, that’s part of what you’re paying for. The size and geographical extent of those networks is governed by the size of the insurer. Selling health insurance to consumers in areas where the insurer has no network would necessitate the insurer developing a new reimbursement model. Billing and reimbursement is already a nightmare, few reputable companies will go for out-of-area sales.

Twitter’s acting up for me or I would link the conversation I had with this person (I’m assuming) so you can see what you’re up against, but it went something like this:
“Trump is a businessman, like a lot of our Founding Fathers.”
“Most Founding Fathers also had extensive political experience.”
“I would stack Trump’s experience in business negotiations up against them anytime.”
“Against Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, et al?”
“Yep.”
*checks profile* “So you’re a ‘Constitutional originalist’, but the originators of the Constitution are less worthy than Trump?”
“Hey I get it, you don’t like Trump, that’s fine. Maybe you like Cruz, I’m OK with that.”
That last line almost has me convinced that it’s a parody account. Almost.
Kim Davis and her defenders say “just go to another county to get married”.
Except for this little detail:
KRS § 402.080 provides:
No marriage shall be solemnized without a license therefor. The license shall be issued by the clerk of the county in which the female resides at the time, unless the female is eighteen (18) years of age or over or a widow, and the license is issued on her application in person or by writing signed by her, in which case it may be issued by any county clerk.

Instead, they’re focused on repeal and eliminate the very protections that most people actually want (expanded coverage to age 26 for dependents, eliminate lifetime caps, and eliminate preexisting condition limits).
a.) If you love the credit card industry operating under South Dakota’s rather lax laws, you’ll love having all your health insurance choices operating under the laws of some state that lowers the bar to attract the insurers to their state.
b.) Even if all these companies are competing in that national market, why would any one of them suddenly want to offer insurance to someone with a personal or even family history of cancer? The laws of economics for the companies won’t magically change just because they can sell their product in another state.

It’ll be a race for catastrophic care coverage only - and even then, if some SD insurer isn’t covering hospitals in your state, you’ll be out of luck.
Heck, even now with doctors and hospitals in network, you can find that you’re getting billed for out of network services that you had no choice over. For instance, you’re going to the ER for an injury and need surgery. You chose the hospital b/c it is in network, and your personal surgeon at the hospital is also in-network.
However, the ER dept is out of network b/c they’ve outsourced that work, and the anesthesiologist is also out of network. They hit you for higher costs as a result - even though you tried to do everything in-network.

That’s some nice earth logic.
Which means it will be roundly ignored.

On that particular ballot election in 2004, voter turnout was very low. The vote total in favor of the amendment was 1,222,125, which was 74.6% of the vote, NOT of all Kentuckians. (“no” votes were 417,097, one of those were mine.)

My best friend went to Notre Dame Paris on a trip and felt in such a place, confession was in order. She walked over to the booth and began to speak to the priest.
“Forgive me Father, for I have sinned. I am living with a man and we are not married.”
The priest responded, “Do you plan to marry him?”
Startled, she responded, “Well, I’m not sure, I mean we’ve talked about it, but you know, it’s just not something I want to do right now. I have doubts. He can be a real asshole.”
“You must consider this. As for the living together, it’s alright.”
She told me she walked out of the booth and just laughed.
She broke up with him a couple of months later and always tells people it was a French priest that caused the breakup.

Citing data that are 2+ years old on this particular topic is obtuse. As gender and sexual identity data are now being collected more often in state and national databases and registries, better estimates of the LGBTQ community will be known.
It’s also completely irrelevant, how many interracial marriages/couples were there compared to noninterracial when Loving v. Virginia was decided?

Trace O’Connell acquitted of disorderly conduct in racially-charged case
Trace O’Connell, the Philip man accused of spilling beer on Native American children at a local hockey game in January, has been acquitted of the disorderly conduct charge against him.
The verdict, issued in the racially charged trial, was filed Tuesday morning by Magistrate Judge Eric Strawn.
In July, Strawn estimated it would take three to four weeks to make his decision, as he wanted to “leave no stone unturned.”
O’Connell, 41, was charged with violating Rapid City’s municipal disorderly conduct ordinance. The incident occurred Jan. 24 during a Rapid City Rush hockey game in the ice arena at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. During the January game, O’Connell, who is white, was among about 20 people in an arena suite. Seated directly below the suite was a group of about 50 students and seven adult chaperons from American Horse School, which is in Allen on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
The criminal complaint against O’Connell alleged that he “caused beer to be spilled upon another person or persons, and uttered racially charged and confrontational words within the hearing of minor(s) and adult(s).”

She’s also in Wikipedia:
Shannyn Moore (born June 12, 1970) is an American political blogger based in Alaska. Moore is a writer for The Huffington Post and has been a prominent critic of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin. She has appeared on such television shows as The Rachel Maddow Show and Countdown with Keith Olbermann.[1][2] Moore also launched her own political talk show, Moore Up North, in November 2009.[3]
After Sarah Palin announced her resignation as Governor of Alaska, Palin and her attorneys released a statement threatening legal action to those who “propagate defamatory material” about her. The statement added “To the extent several websites, most notably liberal Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore, are now claiming as ‘fact’ that Governor Palin resigned because she is ‘under federal investigation’ for embezzlement or other criminal wrongdoing, we will be exploring legal options this week to address such defamation”, her attorney said. “This is to provide notice to Ms. Moore, and those who re-publish the defamation, such as Huffington Post, MSNBC, the New York Times and The Washington Post, that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law.”[4]
Moore responded in a press conference that Palin is “a coward and a bully” and that she never claimed the rumors were fact but only pointed out they existed.[4]
Shame on me for not knowing of her sooner!

James O'Keefe Targets Clinton Campaign For Legally Selling A T-Shirt http://t.co/CyHmfh6tvD
— Kragar (@Kragar_LGF) September 1, 2015
O’Keefe’s Project Veritas Action accused the Clinton campaign on September 1 of allowing a Canadian tourist to launder money, in the form of allowing a t-shirt to be purchased.
In the video representatives of the Clinton campaign at a campaign event point out to a woman from Montreal that that the campaign can’t take contributions from anyone who isn’t American. An undercover activist from Project Veritas then makes the purchase on behalf of the Canadian.
As The Washington Post’s Dave Weigel points out: “There are just two catches. One: No one’s ever thrown the book at an American for purchasing merchandise from a campaign, then giving it to a foreigner as a gift. Two: The person who takes the Canadian’s money and gives it to the Clinton campaign is the Project Veritas Action journalist.”
Weigel further notes, “Daniel Pollack, the director of communications at Project Veritas, argued that the on-camera swag exchange was part of a Clinton scandal continuum, comparable to the stories about foreign businessmen donating to Bill Clinton’s foundation and expecting something from Hillary Clinton’s state department.”
O’Keefe held a press conference September 1 to promote the video, where journalists reportedly asked him “Is this a joke?”

Slime mold using the murders of police to boost his campaign.

And it’s not any kind of “news” that Kim Davis is a democrat. That’s been reported since day one.
Actually, I wasn’t aware, and I thought I had been paying close attention to this story.
Goes to show how unimportant party affiliation is when all your job entails is paperwork.

Unlike more southern states, many of Kentucky’s conservative Democrats haven’t switched their registration to the GOP. Yet.

She’s a “Democrat”. My guess is that a bunch of Republicans all lined up to run for office so she ran as a Democrat to have an easier chance of winning.’
Happens all over the south, especially here in Texas.
She got elected because her mom was county clerk before her. That elected office has been in the family for decades.

So, kind of like a local Bush.

And her son is set to take it over after her. Right?

The results of an outside audit would likely be interesting even to non-accountants.

The police, or police actions, can never be criticized by anyone ever and to do so is worse than the holocaust.
Also, why are Democrats so politically correct all the time, telling people what they can and cannot say, who we can or cannot criticize?

re: #614 Backwoods_Sleuth
no doubt.
Is the son married or is a marriage being arranged for him to bear an heir or heirs?
Cthulhu doesn't give a rat's ass what Kim Davis' God tells her to do.

I’d never even heard of that; I had to look it up. Apparently, the case went to a grand jury early last year.
and warning, the description is somewhat graphic as to Ms. Argentino’s injuries.
Wow.
And with that, goodnight, Lizards.

I stand foursquare for the right to bear heirs as long as you don’t put on airs about it.

The same way that Democrats switch over to the R line in the NYC metro area.

I know! Considering how young so many wrestlers die from the injuries sustained, or the drugs, or the wear and tear of a very hard life, he’s one of the few real survivors.
And it turns out that he may have killed a women in the course of a domestic disturbance. Just sad - and even sadder that it took this long to consider bringing him to justice.
This is my SHOCKED face…
Wait. The Rowan County clerk who refuses to recognize same-sex marriages despite SCOTUS decision has been married FOUR times?! Man, listen.

We have many here in local elections that run as both rep/dem.

re: #223 I Stand With Planned Parenthood
You can split hairs all you want. 3/5 of a person is 3/5 human.
I’m late to this party, but this kind of analysis can’t be applied to the 3/5 compromise.
It falls apart instantaneously once it is noted that the north wanted slaves to count for nothing in terms of representation and the south wanted 100%. 60% was the eventual compromise.
The fact that the south wanted the number to be higher hardly means that the south thought the black slaves were more human. They just wanted as much power in the House of Representatives and in the electoral college as possible.
